EHA celebrates 4th Annual Toy Drive

Children from the Edinburg Housing Authori ty’s developments lined up on Dec. 21, waiting for Blue Santa to arrive with toys. Ap proximately 500 toys were collected in collaboration with the Edinburg Police De partment and distributed at EHA’s 4th Annual Toy Drive.

EHA staff, Edin burg PD, Edinburg Parks and Recreation, Whiskey D. Band, Southern Justice, rep resentatives from Edinburg Sekula Library and RGV JR. Vipers Academy participated in the event by traveling to every development to deliver toys. The caravan was led by Blue Santa and began at La Posada. The journey contin ued through Lantana, El Jar din, Albores Courts and end ed at Ramirez Apartments.

Six members of the Southern Justice mo torcycle club participated in the event by handing out toys to the children. Vice president for the Southern Justice, Freddy Ramos, commented on the impor tance of community partners in events like the toy drive.

The H.A.V.E. S.T.R. is a membership organization consisting of agencies and individuals who administer housing and community de velopment, and it is currently one of the leading advocates for the provision of ade quate ad affordable housing in the South Texas Region.

As a part of Ed inburg Housing Authority’s (EHA) commitment to raise awareness for Breast Cancer, EHA organized its 3rd Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk and fair on Oct. 19 at La Posa da Apartments in Edinburg, TX.

As of Novem ber, all five EHA develop ments had free little librar ies. The little libraries are equipped with grade-level reading books. Parents and children are encour aged to bring a book and trade it in for another. It’s

recommended for children to read 30 minutes before bedtime every day. Stop by your nearest little library and pick up a book TODAY!

A total of 47 turkeys were donated to the Edinburg Housing Authority for the Thanksgiving holiday. Forty-seven fam ilies were fortunate to receive a turkey and complimentary sides. EHA would like to thank all the community mem bers and partners for their generous donations. EHA & UTRGV Collaborations

The UTRGV College of Education classes as sisted with homework help every week at all five de velopments on Mondays and Tuesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Our young residents really enjoyed having college students as their mentors, and will certainly miss hav ing the future teachers at the homework help sessions. Additionally, UTRGV students received train ing and became certified to teach the RedRover Readers program, a unique community-based learning program that helps develop awareness and empathy as children explore the bond between people and animals through stories and discussion. RedRover Readers classes were held every Wednesday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. where resi dents got a visit Bob, a certified therapy dog for children. The UTRGV Bilingual Department had students from Ear ly Childhood classes visit our developments on Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m. University students held a Playing and Learning Camp where they prepared different math, sci ence and reading activities for our young residents. Their activities culminated in a celebration where the organiza tion UT CARES sent their Giving Elves to celebrate with the children while they read “The Polar Express,” ate hol iday food, worked on crafts and played Christmas Bingo.

Applebee’s hosted Edinburg Housing Authority’s “Short Stacks for a Tall Cause” pancake fundraiser on Dec. 3, 2016. The fundraiser was carried out to raise money to buy books for the recently established free little libraries at the EHA developments. The EHA Youth Leadership Association and UTRGV BESO volunteered by serving pancakes to all guests and mak ing sure they had a great breakfast, while participating in the educational initiative.

3ª Caminata anual de la prevención del cáncer de seno

Como parte del compromiso de Edinburg Housing Authority (EHA) para aumentar la concientización sobre el cáncer de mama, EHA orga nizó su 3ra cami nata y feria anual de conciencia so bre el cáncer de mama el 19 de oc tubre en La Posa da apartamentos en Edinburg, TX.

El evento comenzó a la 8:30 a.m. y termino a las 10:30 a.m. con una asistencia de más de 50 personas. La caminata que tomo parte en La Posada fue llenada por residentes, los empleados, repre sentantes de las agencias y miem bros de la comuni dad utilizaron play eras rosadas para ensenar el apoyo que le tienen a el cáncer de mama.

Distribución de pavos de EHA

Colaboraciones de EHA y UTRGV

El colegio de educación de UTRGV asistió con la ayuda de tarea cada semana en todas las cinco propiedades cada lunes y jueves de 5 a 7 p.m. Nuestros residentes dis frutaron la ayuda de estudiantes de colegio, y van a extrañar teniendo a los futuros maestros ayudándolos con sus tareas. Adicionalmente, estudiantes de UTRGV recibi eron entrenamiento y se certificaron para ensenar el pro grama de RedRover Readers, un programa comunitario basado en aprendizaje que ayuda desarrollar conciencia y empatía mientras que los niños exploran el enlace en tre personas y animales por medio de historias y discu siones. Clases de RedRover Readers tomaron acabo cada miércoles de 5 a 6:30 p.m. donde los residentes re cibieron una visita de Bob, un perro de terapia certificado.

El departamento bilingüe de UTRGV organizo que estudiantes de las clases de primera infancia visitaran las propiedades cada jueves de 5 a 6 p.m. estudiantes de la universidad organizaron un campamento de juegos y apren dizaje donde prepararon diferentes actividades de matemáti cas, ciencia y lectura para los jóvenes residentes. Las activi dades culminaron en una celebración donde la organización UT CARES mando a sus Giving Elves para celebrar con los niños mientras que leían “The Polar Express,” comían comida festiva, trabajaban en artesanías y jugaban bingo navideño.

Applebee’s organizo “Short Stacks for a Tall Cause,” una recaudación de fondos por medio de Edinburg Housing Authority el 3 de dic iembre. El evento fue organizado para recaudar fondos para comprar libros para las pequeñas bibliotecas que fueron establecidas hace poco. La renta se sigue debiendo el primer dia de cada mes pero EHA les da hasta el 5 para completar sus pagos. Una multa de $15 se le agregara a la renta.

Residentes mayores de 18 años que no esten ex entos de el requisito horas comuniatarias tienen que cumplir 8 horas mínimas de servicio al mes para cumplir con los requisitos de HUD.
