Edinburg Housing Authority (EHA) Executive Director Mr. Rudy Ramirez re cently had the privilege to meet with Lourdes Castro Ramirez, Principal Deputy Assistant of the U.S. Department of Housing and Ur ban Development (HUD) at EHA’s admin istrative building board room on Sept. 6.

As a result of the visit there was a round table discussion primarily focusing on educational initiatives, community col laborations and future projects EHA plans to establish. The round table discussion in cluded San Antonio’s Public Housing Direc tor David Pohler, Rio Grande Valley com munity leaders, staff from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), County delegates, Hidalgo County District Attorney, EHA’s Board of Commissioners, and City & Housing Authority representatives from Edinburg, Pharr, Hidalgo, and McAllen.

Castro Ramirez was born in Juchit lan, Jalisco, Mexico; she was 4 years old when she moved to the states. She attend ed the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where she earned a Bachelor’s de gree in political science and Chicano stud ies and later a Master’s in urban planning. Castro Ramirez resume exemplifies her dedication to the community and people. Some of her professional experience and service to the community include commu

nity development planner for the Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation, proj ect manager for Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles, chief executive officer for San Antonio Housing Authority and co ordinator of Kick Cancer Soccer Camp., Today Castro Ramirez serves as the Prin cipal Deputy Assistant of the U.S. Depart ment of Housing and Urban Development. Mr. Ramirez had the opportunity to share some of the recent initiatives es tablished at the agency. He mentioned the demographics and statistics, which cur rently make up the EHA population and emphasized the importance of education. Ramirez also mentioned the partnerships established with different UTRGV colleges, departments and community organizations. The current executive director of the EHA, Mr. Rudy Ramirez is empowering the residents by providing them with ed

ucational resources and implementing many programs to help and further lead EHA residents to a more successful life.

She shared with us a wealth of valuable information that will immensely help our housing agency.” said Mr. Ramirez when asked about the visit of Castro Ramirez. EHA offers many opportunities for the residents they accommodate. New initiatives and project are on their way. Mr. Ramirez along with all the staff at EHA is beyond excited for the future of the agency. Edinburg Housing Authority (EHA) held their First Annual 5K on Aug. 6 in Edin burg, TX. Over 250 runners, 50 volunteers, 45 sponsors and donors, ten organizations, four drum lines and two cheerleading groups all made the EHA First Annual 5K Fun Run/ Walk a huge success. In collaboration with the University Recreational Center (UREC) from The University of Texas of Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) and the City of Edinburg EHA was able to have a safe and well laid out route for their First Annual EHA 5K Fun Run/Walk.

As part of our efforts to empha size learning and education year-round, our agency is excited to announce the comple tion and success of our third annual Sum mer Activities Program. The program gave students in our developments the oppor tunity to take part in fun robotics, arts and fine arts classes held throughout the week.

These educational activities were held from July 6 to August 12 at the Ciro Tre viño Administration Building. Thanks to our partnership with the Edinburg Consolidat ed Independent School District, instruction during the classes was provided by certified teachers. This year, Victor Cantu taught the

As a result, to celebrate the end of the program, students held a special musical performance and a robotics presentation on July. 26. Parents attended the event along with EHA staff and Board Members. During the event, students who attended the fine arts class performed a musical inspired by the 1950’s era, which featured some popular songs like Rock and Roll Is Here To Stay by Danny and The Ju niors. Following the musical, kids in the ro botics class did a presentation of their work. Additionally, an Art Exhibit fea turing the students’ artwork was displayed in the Ciro Trevino Administration Build

“It was definitely a journey and things fluctuated quite a bit, but once we got a hold of things we made sure our first annual 5K would be a success.” said Mr. Ramirez when asked about putting together a 5K. Fernando Sanchez from Texas A&M, to complete the EHA College Ring Challenge

Edinburg Housing Authority (EHA) Executive Director Rudy Ramirez, residents Consuelo Sanchez (Mom) and Gladys Sanchez (Daughter) went up to College Station Texas A&M University this weekend for the Aggie Ring Day Ceremony to cele brate with Fernando Sanchez (Son) for receiving his A&M College Ring. Mr. Sanchez is the first EHA resident to complete our College Ring Chal lenge, which encourages our young adults to pursue higher education and complete a university level edu cation. Upon completion the student is rewarded with a college ring paid

in full by the EHA Scholarship Fund. EHA staff, residents, friends and family are extremely proud of Mr. Sanchez for his great accomplish ment! We hope his story encour ages others to challenge them selves to pursue higher education and strive for better opportunities.

On Aug. 11 more than 500 Edinburg Hous ing Authority (EHA) residents grade kinder to 12 received backpacks filled with school supplies at the Annual Back to School Give away. This event would not have been pos sible without the partnership and contribution of the sponsors: State Representative Terry Canales, A Vision for You, Rio Grande Valley Vipers, RGV FC Toros, and Superior Health Plan, some who donated school supplies, and/or backpacks. Other community school supplies contributors included the City of Ed inburg Fire Department and RGV Food Bank.

youth residents from 11:00 a.m. to noon. Later in the day EHA held their First Annual Fun Day at La Posada for all the residents to come out and enjoy. Waterslides, badminton, soccer, bounce houses, and a variety of other activities were displayed for the families to enjoy.

Service for their participation and exhibits at the First Annual Fun Day, which provid ed services, information and giveaways. EHA also invited United Blood Services to the EHA administrative building where staff, residents, volunteers, agency participants and community members who qualified stopped by to donate blood for a good cause in order to help give back to the community.

Staff, volunteers, and representatives from A Vision for You, Juniors Vipers Acade my and Terry Canales were stationed at different community centers from the de velopments in order to help give away backpacks with school supplies to the

The events for the day were possible thanks to the efforts of three Social Work interns from the University of Texas Rio Grande Val ley. EHA will continue to partner up with community stakeholders and other enti ties to bring more services and events that will inform, provide and present our residents to greater opportunities.

The Edinburg Consolidated Inde pendent School District (ECISD) summer food program served over 8,000 meals to students from the Edinburg Housing Au thority (EHA) developments and commu nity from June 6 through August 12. Edin burg CISD summer food program provides healthy meals to children of the city of Ed inburg, in an effort to continue proper nutri tion to students even when not at school. Due to the program’s past success, this year all five EHA developments were dis tribution sites for the community. Students 18 years old or younger were encouraged to pick up their breakfast and lunch meals at the community center at their development. Rent deadline

This year the school district pro vided its food services to all 5 developments with 2 meals a day. A total of 8,574 meals were distributed to our children that live in our housing developments. The Edinburg Housing Authority looks forward to working with the school district in continuing to help its community.” said Mr. Ramirez when asked about this year’s summer food program. The EHA executive director feels it is import ant for children to be educated about nu trition and for them to practice good eating habits year round. EHA staff and Mr. Ramirez are extremely grateful for the help that the ECISD summer food program provided.

Homework Help Sessions:

At this moment homework help sessions dates and times for all EHA properties have not been set. Tentatively El Jardin, Lantana and La Posada have a 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. session on Mondays. Visit our social media profiles for more dates and times to be announced soon.

El Director Ejecutivo del Departa mento de Viviendas de Edinburg Sr. Rodolfo Ramirez recientemente, tuvo el privilegio de reunirse con Lourdes Castro Ramirez, asis tente diputada principal del departamento de alojamiento y desarrollo urbano en el edificio administrativo de EHA el 6 de septiembre. El resultado de la visita fue una discusión de mesa primeramente enfocada en ini ciativas educativas, colaboraciones con la comunidad y futuros proyectos que EHA planea empezar. La discusión fué dirigida en el edificio administrativo dentro del salón de juntas con la compañia de el director de Viviendas Públicas de San Antonio Sr. Da vid Pohler, Lideres del Valle de Rio Grande (UTRGV), personal de la Universidad de Te jas del Valle de Rio Grande, Delegados del condado, el abogado del distrito de Hidalgo, Comisionaros de la mesa directiva de EHA y representantes de las agencias públicas de Edinburg, Pharr, Hidalgo y McAllen. Castro Ramirez nació en Juchitlan, Jalis co, Mexico; cuando tenía 4 años su familia se mudó a los Estados Unidos. Sr. Ramirez tuvo la oportunidad de com partir iniciativas recientes establecidas en la agencia. Menciono la demografía y estadísticas que en el momento repre sentan la población de EHA y enfatizan la importancia de la educación. Ramirez también menciono la unión estabilizada con diferentes colegios, departamentos y organizaciones comunitarios de UTRGV. Terminan las actividades de verano

Parte de nuestros esfuerzos es en fatizar la importancia de la educación al trans curso del año, nuestra agencia está emociona da de anunciar la terminación y el éxito de los programas de verano tres años consecutivos.

Los programas les dieron a los es tudiantes de nuestras residencias la opor tunidad de participar en clases de robóti ca, arte y bellas artes toda la semana. Éstas actividades educativas duraron des de el 6 de junio hasta el 12 de agosto en el edificio administrativo de Ciro Treviño. Gracias a nuestra colaboración con el Dis trito Escolar de Edinburg, instrucciones du rante las clases fueron proporcionadas por maestros certificados. Este ano, Sr. Victor

Cantu enseno robótica y clases de arte y Ro salinda Cantu enseno clases de bellas artes. Para celebrar la terminación de los pro gramas, estudiantes ejecutaron un musical especial y una presentación de robótica el 26 de julio, padres, personal de EHA y miem bros de la mesa directiva asistieron al evento. Durante el evento, estudiantes que asist ieron a las clases de bellas artes expus ieron un musical inspirado por los años 1950 cual fue compuesta de la canción popular Rock and Roll Is Here To Stay por Danny and the Juniors. Después del musical, los niños en la clase de robótica hicieron una presentación de su trabajo. Adicionalmente, las artes hechas por los estudiantes fueron enmarcados y exhibidos en las paredes

de el edificio administrativo Ciro Treviño. Nuestra agencia esta agrade cida por el éxito de los programas este año y quisiera darle gracias a los pa dres y estudiantes por participar. Esper amos ver a más estudiantes aprovechar éstas oportunidades el próximo verano.

Residente, Fernando Sanchez de Texas A&M, cumple el reto del anillo universitario de EHA

Rudy Ramirez, Director Ejecutivo del Departmaneto de Vivendas de Edin burg, residentes Consuelo Sanchez (madre) y Gladys Sanchez (Hija) via jaron a Texas A&M en College Station este fin de semana para celebrar la ceremonia de anillo Aggie donde se le otorgó a Fernando Sanchez (Hijo) su anillo universitario de A&M. El joven Sanchez es el primer res idente de EHA que ha completa do el reto del anillo universitario, el cual impulsa a los jóvenes a continuar una educación universi taria. Al completar la meta los es tudiantes son recompensados con

un anillo pagado completamente por los fondos para becas de EHA.

¡El personal de EHA, residentes y familia estan extremadamente orgullosos del joven por sus lo gros! Esperamos que esta his toria impulse a otros a tomar el reto y luchar por una mejor edu cación para mejores oportunidades.

El 11 de agosto más de 500 residentes de Edinburg Housing Author ity (EHA) de grados kínder a 12 recibi eron mochilas llenas de útiles escolares en el evento anual de Regreso a Clases.

En la tarde del mismo día EHA tuvo su primer evento anual Fun Day en La Posa da para todos los residentes que quis ieran salir y entretenerse. Resbaladilla, bádminton, soccer, casas de rebote y una variedad de actividades fueron ex puestas para entretener a toda la familia.

Service por su participacion y exposition en el primer evento anual dia de diversion cual propuso servicios, informacion y rifas. EHA igualmente tuvo la presencia de United Blood Services en el edificio administrativo Ciro Trevino de EHA donde el personal, res identes, voluntarios, agencias participantes y miembros de la comunidad que calific aron pudieron donar sangre para ayudar a alguien en la comunidad que lo necesite.

Desde las 11:00 a.m. hasta me dio dia personal, voluntarios y represen tantes de A Vision for You, Junios Vipers Academy y Terry Canales fueron coloca dos en los cinco sitios comunitarios de las residencias para ayudar a entregar mochi las con útiles a los estudiantes residentes.

El Distrito Independiente Esco lar de Edinburg proporciono 8,000 comi das a los estudiantes del Departamento de Viviendas de Edinburg y la comunidad a trevés de su programa de comidas alimen ticias del verano el cual duró del 6 de ju nio hasta el 12 de agosto. El programa de comidas del verano otorgó comidas salud ables a niños de la ciudad de Edinburg en un esfuerzo a continuar con la nutrición de los estudiantes al terminar el ciclo escolar. Debido al exito del programa en años an teriores, éste ano las 5 residencias de EHA fueron sitios de repartición de comida. Es tudiantes de 18 años o menos estaban an imados a recoger su desayuno de los cen tros comunitarios de cualquier residencia. Conscientes de la pobreza en el Val le del Rio Grande, EHA Director Ejec

Edinburg Housing Authori ty está emocionado de continuar trabajan do con el distrito escolar para ayudar a la comunidad.” Dice Mr. Ramirez cuando le preguntaron sobre el programa de verano El Director Ejecutivo siente que es impor tante para los niños que se eduquen sobre la nutrición y que ellos mismos practiquen buenos hábitos alimenticios todo el año. El personal de EHA y el señor Ramirez están extremadamente agradecidos por la ayu da que ECISD les proporciono este verano.

Renta

La renta se sigue debiendo el primer dia de cada mes pero EHA les da hasta el 5 para com pletar sus pagos. Una multa de $15 se le agrega a Servicio comunitario

Residentes mayores de 18 años que no esten exentos de el requisito de voluntar tienen que cumplir 8 horas mínimas de servicio comunitario al mes para complir con los requisitos de HUD.
