Florida vs. Georgia Rivalry Game Everbank Field Oct. 28 The Florida vs. Georgia game has brought Florida Gator and Georgia Bulldog fans together year after year since 1904. This game does not end on a happy note for one of the two teams, but it always causes spirited football fans to chomp or woof together in one stadium. Often referred to as one of college football’s most unpredictable rivalries, this game is (usually) a nail-biter.

The teams alternate who is the home team and who is the visiting team at every matchup. This year, the Florida Gators are the home team, so Gator fans will be on the west side of the stadium. The Georgia Bulldogs are the visiting team and will be located on the east side of the stadium. Find tickets at Ticketmaster and many other ticket-selling sites!

Describing Kickback’s Gastropub is as difficult as it is to pick out your favorite beer from their beer list. The original section of the restaurant has a sports pub theme. Additionally the Goozlepipe & Guttyworks addition has its own bar and restaurant seating, a downstairs “Belgian” Room, and downstairs “Catacombs” which houses over 100,000 beers and a private beer locker room (at a comfy 56°). If you haven’t been to Kickbacks, be sure to look at all of the artifacts, and you’ll be amazed. If you have been there, it’s likely that you’ll find something you didn’t know was there. Their food menu is enormous with so many choices and lots to love. It’s one bar that gets photographed over and over, and it has garnered its share of recognition. Still, the place is low-profile so you can really kick back. Oh, by the way, there are around 200 beers on tap. Good luck deciding!

“We provide a space for children who have experienced traumatic life events. There is very little opportunity in our community for residential programming for children who are in crisis,” Sirdevan said. “I`m just proud to be a part of continuing a program that’s been in existence for 43 years.”

While promoting cancer awareness throughout the community with an emphasis placed in demographics where the mortality rates are highest, their intent is to increase early detection with screenings and follow ups. What brought you to Jacksonville?

I was born and raised in Avondale. My father retired as a neurologist for St. Vincent’s. I went to Riverside Presbyterian Day School and the IB program at Stanton College Preparatory before leaving the state to attend Davidson College.

Then I returned to go to law school at UF. Why did you choose law?

I was always interested in the art of persuasion and standing up for the little guy.

My college professors encouraged me to pursue it. After law school I learned this was a nice way to make a difference in a very personal way.

How do you set yourself apart from other firms?

Ever wonder who is behind all of the beautiful murals at Taco Lu? Jessica Becker is an artist from Atlantic Beach who specializes in 3D paintings. Her style is bold and upfront.

She uses wigs, articles of clothing and other mediums to give her work texture. She decided to make being an artist her full time gig in 2010. She is self-taught and her knack for making connections with others has lead her to many opportunities in and around Jacksonville. Don and Debbie Nicol, owners of Jacksonville Beach TacoLu enlisted her to paint the three-story side of the restaurant when the store moved locations. Ever since then, Jessica has been able to concentrate on art full-time with various gallery showings and projects in and outside of Jacksonville. She is even making her way to Atlanta, Georgia in October.

“I love to paint portraits and usually use musicians, artists or movie characters as my muses. The people I paint are a representation of myself in some way. For instance, my painting of Frida Kahlo is a projection of what I want to become and what I’ve gone through in life. This painting is a piece that expressed what I’d gone through after my mother’s death. All the different elements have meanings.

Get lost in what Aaron calls a Spontaneous Realism, or “sponta-real” for short. His style of artwork has transformed over the years into being an unrealistic, yet very realistic way of creating pieces that allow the mind to see what it wants. By using colors that aren’t the actual color of the object, Aaron creates amazing works of art.

Aaron Shelton became inspired to create art in the most organic way – by a second grade art tutorial. He knew from that point on that he wanted to be an artist. Aaron’s paintings and sculptures will have you completely engulfed in his world. All of Aaron’s artwork is original and available to purchase.

Greg Birdsong was inspired to create Little Props of Horror in 2014 after a special Halloween of scaring trick-or-treaters, young and old in 1989. On a whim, founder Greg Birdsong created his first scary outfit - the classic haunted scarecrow. He sat still like a scarecrow one Halloween right next to the candy bowl, and as people went for the candy, he would growl “Only one, please,” thus starting his newfound love of frightening people on Halloween. This progressed year after year, from homemade coffins to turning his childhood home into a haunted house. This home haunting went on for 25 years and the team called it quits in 2015. Following that, the dream was always to develop that one prop every Halloweenlover wants or find some service to provide to buyers in the industry of haunting.

When country music lovers talk about the greatest groups in the genre, Shenandoah is always at the forefront of any discussion. Fueled by Marty Raybon’s distinctive vocals and the band’s skilled musicianship, Shenandoah became well known for delivering such hits as “Two Dozen Roses,” “Church on Cumberland Road” and “Next to You, Next to Me” as well as such achingly beautiful classics as “I Want to be Loved Like That” and the Grammy winning “Somewhere in the Vicinity of the Heart” duet with Alison Krauss.

Today that legacy continues as original members Raybon and Mike McGuire reunite to launch a new chapter in Shenandoah’s storied career. It all began when the guys got back together to perform a benefit concert for a friend battling cancer. “We saw how folks reacted,” Raybon says of the response to their reunion.

“And then Jerry Phillips, son of legendary Sun Records producer Sam Phillips, said ‘You guys need to make a run at this. People still love what you do. You can tell by the reaction. There’s a lot of excitement in the air.’”

“We are really proud of the quality of the material that we have in our catalog and how it’s touched so many people’s lives,” McGuire says. “As far as the future goes, I’m expecting more of the same.”

It Has Nothing To Do With Willpower

The idea that makes my heart sink the most when it comes to individuals with AD/HD, is that these people could overcome problems with motivation if they just mustered up enough “willpower.” With all of our knowledge, I continuously hear reports from parents, teachers, spouses, even my clients themselves, saying, “I have seen them do it before so I know they can if they really want to.”

If only it were that simple. Remember the commercial for the depression meds where the little rock is being followed around by the gloomy rain cloud? Well, picture that rock as a brain, and that cloud as the disorder. That is what it is like for people suffering. Just like a cloud, some areas are denser than others, and there are even parts where you can almost see the sun shining through. These are the moments when the affected person can motivate him or herself enough to attend to their responsibilities. There are good days and bad days, and the bad days have nothing to do with laziness or lack of willpower.

One thing that I think makes it hard for people to really get this is that individuals with mental health disorders don’t have the benefit of others seeing their cloud. When we see someone approaching an entrance on crutches, we hold the door for them. On the other hand, if we smile politely at someone who is depressed and they frown and avert their eyes, we assume they are rude and maybe mumble something under our breath.

So please, try and take a step back now and then when you feel yourself getting impatient with a loved one or stranger who appears to be rude, defiant or angry. They may be suffering more than you will ever know.

One of the biggest misconceptions about cavities is that they are directly caused by sugar consumption. The truth is bacteria in the mouth is the real issue, specifically a type called Streptococcus mutans. When these bacteria “eat” sugar, they release acid. If it happens over a long period of time, it can cause cavities to form.

Bad bacteria in the mouth varies from person to person. So, a child that brushes well and does not eat much candy could develop more cavities than another child who eats tons of sugar and doesn’t brush well. It all depends on the amount of Strep mutans in the mouth.

Consistent visits to the dentist, brushing/flossing, removal of decay and sometimes prescription-grade antibacterial rinses can help. EVERY child is different, and only a dental professional can determine the right path to health.

Enjoying a healthy and nutritious breakfast is the key to starting every day on the right foot. Proper morning fuel can set the tone for the hours to come by increasing energy, decreasing cravings and the desire for unwanted snacking.

Choose foods that are high in protein and healthy fats like eggs cooked with lots of veggies, avocado toast on whole grain bread or Greek yogurt with fruit and oats. Carbohydrate laden foods like bagels, pancakes and cereal can fill you up at the moment, but may not keep you full throughout the morning.

You can even skip traditional morning foods altogether and get creative.

Quinoa, sweet potatoes, and ground turkey or chicken are all great options for the day’s first meal.

Anxiety, anger, depression, guilt – emotions started building before Hurricane Irma and gained strength as quickly as the storm. The anticipatory anxiety of preparing for the storm, and in some cases evacuating, was augmented by hours of relentless howling winds and pounding rain. It intensified as power was lost and hours of uncertainty dragged on.

After the storm passed, mixed emotions of shock, relief and despair flooded people, just as raging flood waters inundated downtown and communities throughout the First Coast.

For some, hours without power turned into days or a week. People returned to the area, left shelters and emerged from their homes to survey the damage.

As clean up, repair, and rebuilding commence, it is obvious the storm left its mark on minds and hearts as well as buildings and parks.

Everyone has their own unique story to tell. Whether one never lost power, or sadly lost everything, no one is left unphased by Hurricane Irma and its aftermath.

Comments on social media and from conversations reveal common themes – depression, fatigue, anxiety about the future (and future storms), anger, disrupted sleep and appetite, and impaired concentration. Some report a “zombie-like” feeling and numbness.

None of it feels good – yet it is important to recognize all of this as a normal response to an abnormal and traumatic event.

It is possible to recover emotionally from the storm and its aftermath. There are things we can do individually and collectively to begin to restore a sense of normalcy to our lives, and in some cases, create a new normal. It will take time, and will be different for everyone, depending on their circumstances.

If you’re reading this, it’s probably because you’re wondering what’s going on in the photo next to this article.

That’s me: Tom Croom with the claw mark shreds in my red Starfleet jersey at the center of the pic. It was late 1980-something and I was attending my first ever pop culture convention. That weekend served as my introduction into the world of cosplay, fandom and overall geek culture. My friend John (to my left) and I won the costume contest. Our prize? $20 cash and a Dick Tracy movie poster which was presented to us on stage by legendary actor George Takei.

Flash forward to 2012. My team at Green Mustard Entertainment and I created WasabiCon in Jacksonville, Florida as an opportunity for local fans to share that same experience. This year, our sixth, will take place at the Lexington Hotel & Conference Center near downtown. On Saturday and Sunday, October 21st and 22nd, local fans and families will have a chance to celebrate being geek in Jacksonville, Florida.

WasabiCon 2017 boasts over 30,000 square feet of space and will showcase artists, vendors, four different themed video game rooms, a tabletop game room, cosplay events, fan groups, panels and much more. Attendees will have the chance to meet popular anime voice actor Todd Haberkorn (Fairy Tail) and actress/singer/songwriter AJ Michalka (Steven Universe; The Goldbergs; pop duo Aly & AJ). There have been some fun topics in the food world this week. Several restaurants have updated and added new seasonal menu items that will have limited availability, Brio Tuscan Grille at Town Center is on that list. I was happy to get a sneak peek of the menu that will be offered, starting August 8; a lineup of fun dishes to take you into the fall season in style.

We started off with lovely Bruschetta appetizer of smokey onion jam with a grilled asparagus spear and topped with pancetta. it only got better from there, a generous plate of chicken, mozzarella ravioli arrived at our table much to our delight. It was every bit as delightful as it looked.

Our next two dishes were perhaps our favorites, the grilled balsamic pork chop and the steak saltimbocca. The chop served with sweet potatoes, mushrooms, pancetta, brussels sprouts, caramelized onion

and maple balsamic vinaigrette, was one of the best pork chops I have tasted in awhile. Then there was the steak, stuffed with prosciutto and provolone, crispy fingerlings, chile flake, fried sage, broccolini and Marsala sauce. The marsala blend here was quite a palate-pleasing item. It also served as a nice dipping sauce for the fingerlings.

Just when we were ready to tap out, a beautiful dessert arrived; snickerdoodle peach cobbler served warm with vanilla bean gelato and powdered sugar. We knew we needed to make room for this dessert and we did, finishing it off in record time. Sweet and warm atop the gelato was a nicer addition than whipped cream or ice cream.

There is also a lineup of combo plates available until October 20.

Is a wrap a sandwich? That’s one of those eternal questions that will always depend on who you ask. When it comes to the Wrap it Up food truck, however, that question is entirely irrelevant. The only question that matters to them is: what’ll you have? Will you go classic with their interpretation of a beef gyro or a bit adventurous with their jerk chicken? The gyro features fresh grilled beef gyro meat with spinach, cucumber, tomatoes, onions and a cool and creamy tzatziki, while the jerk chicken heats things up with romaine lettuce, tomatoes, onions, bell peppers and a mango habañero aioli.

Today though, we tried the Black & Blue: blackened grilled chicken topped with gorgonzola blue cheese, tomato, bacon, some crispy romaine lettuce and a creamy, yet tangy, blue cheese vinaigrette.

The chicken was nice and juicy and thankfully, the blackening seasoning wasn’t too overpowering. The cheese and bacon, when combined with the blue cheese vinaigrette, bring the whole thing together nicely, creating a delicious option for a midweek lunch.

Alas, one cannot always eat super healthy, and today the rosemary parmesan fries were calling our name. First off, they’re beer battered which multiplies the deliciousness by a factor of 10 and creates a uniquely crispy exterior. The fries are then tossed in grated parmesan cheese and chopped fresh rosemary to create a cheesy herbal explosion of flavor in your mouth. While some may reach for the ketchup to dip these in out of sheer habit, Wrap it Up pairs their fries with a creamy garlic aioli that brings the flavor profile up a notch.

So if you’re looking for a great handheld treat at lunchtime, look no further than the lime green truck that wraps tastier treats than Santa himself.

Executive Chef Jeanne Koenigsberg is in charge at The Wine Cellar, perhaps one of Jacksonville’s best-known fine dining destination.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I was born and raised in Tallahassee, Florida. I more or less got thrown into the food industry by my family.

My uncles ran several restaurants in South Florida, and my cousin was the private chef for the governor.

At a very young age, I entered food competitions and attended private cooking classes; during the same time, many of the colleges in the area began offering culinary programs.

So that is where my roots spawned.

I took a job through a high school training program for a catering company and just ran with it. After that experience, I could not imagine doing anything else for a career.

What brought you to Jacksonville?

I was looking for a culinary school to attend. Miami was too expensive for me, so I researched Florida State Schools and found one in Jacksonville. I came here, did the tour, the program was just taking off, plus the instructors seemed very knowledgeable. It was the perfect fit.

How long have you been cooking professionally?

It has been about 12 years now. I started at Café NOLA, stayed five years, feeling I had perhaps reached my peak there I began looking for other ventures and took a job at Roy’s Restaurant at the beach.

While there, I worked with another very talented chef who pushed me to do the best I could each day. I also worked at Moxie Kitchen and was offered an opportunity to work as a seasonal job for CSX on one of the executive trains. After I had rekindled a relationship with a former partner, we decided it was perhaps better for me not to be traveling as much, and I found my way here to the Wine Cellar, and have been here for about two and a half years now.

They work with a lot of local artisans and farms who provide the raw ingredients for the finished product at Moxie.

How would you explain your style of cooking?

I would say classical style with a seasonal Florida spin; I am very passionate about Florida ingredients and what the state has to offer. We source as much as possible from local farms, plus I do much of the sourcing from small companies.

How do you come up with ideas for the dishes in your restaurant?

The owner pushes me quite a bit.

We offer multiple menus here: Prefix once a month, lunch changes monthly, and the dinner menu changes every other month.

Back in early August, the Jacksonville Icemen signed defenseman Mike Ratchuk, making him the first defenseman in franchise history. The 29-year-old was the second round draft pick by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2006 and will returning to play in the United States this season.

VERSATILE Ratchuk has played in five different leagues after his two seasons at Michigan State University. This South Buffalo, New York native went straight to the AHL and played four seasons with four different teams. He also brings international experience to the Icemen, as he played one season in Austria and spent last season in the United Kingdom with the Sheffield Steelers (EIHL).

VERY DISCIPLINED DEFENSEMAN One thing that stands out most about Ratchuk is his reliability. In 45 games with the Sheffield Steelers, he only tallied 16 penalty infraction minutes (PIM). During the postseason, Ratchuk averaged 4.4 PIM during five Kelly Cup Playoffs runs in the ECHL. With Ratchuk staying out of the box, the Icemen can spend more time on the attack.

POTENT PLAYER It’s rare to find a quality two-way defenseman in hockey, but the Icemen landed one in Ratchuk. In the 2013-14 season with the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL), Ratchuk registered 44 points in 69 games. During that season, he also scored a career-high 15 goals. In his entire ECHL career, the left-shot defenseman has scored 35 times and is nearing the century mark in assists with 92. His size and speed will pose a threat to opponents across the league.

ONE-EYED DOLL STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Austin, Texas often features Kimberly Freeman and Junior Sewall rounding one of the most eclectic duos of the last five years. Their debut record “Hole” was released in 2007. On October 20th they will perform at Jack Rabbits for their Something Wicked Tour.

Specializing in a high-energy live show, the goth punk duo has been touring the country for many years in support of their various albums. The band has been awarded many honors including Top 20 Most Extraordinary Guitarists for band leader Kimberly Freeman.

The band has toured in the past with Otep, Mushroomhead and the Butcher Babies.

Dressed in sexy goth gear and zombie-like makeup, the band’s theatrical element does not get lost in the audience. Freeman often jumps into the crowd, all whilst still playing her guitar. She often changes costume; she will be in a cowboy hat during part of the set and end it in a pope hat. The band’s influences seem to range from acts like the Dresdon Dolls to the White Stripes. Catch the band here in Jacksonville before they embark on their European tour that take them to Ireland, Germany and Austria.

JACKSONVILLE 90’S BLOCK PARTY STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Are you longing for the soulful hits of your youth? Look no further than Jacksonville’s 90’s Block Party on October 13th at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. 90’s R&B sensation Guy will be supported by wunderkind producer Teddy Riley, Monica, Jagged Edge, Ginuwine, and Dru Hill.

Founded in Baltimore, Maryland, Dru Hill had a string of memorable hits throughout the 90’s. The group had one if it’s first performances at Showtime at the Apollo. Their most famous member is Sisqo who released his album Unleash the Dragon in 1999.

Teddy Riley has made a name for himself producing the biggest names in R&B such as Doug E. Fresh, Bobby Brown and the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson. He was also a member of Blackstreet.

One of the princesses of 90’s R&B, the incomparable Monica returns to Jacksonville. Her hit “Don’t Take It Personal” was every high school’s anthem.

She’s had some bumps in the road during her career, but she has established herself as one of the most successful urban singers of the 90’s.

All of these artists will come together and take you back in time to the days when you had a boombox and high tops.

KSICK

Lane Pittman formed the popular rock band KSICK with his brother, Christian Pittman, after years of playing music together. Growing up in an atmosphere of music surrounded by family members and friends who were also musically-inclined helped encourage the two brothers to write their own lyrics, strum their own chords and become the musicians they are today.

KSICK was formed in the jam room of their childhood home. They bounced ideas off one another and started making music. Lane shared with me that Christian became an “animal” on the drums, and the musical chemistry just thrived between them. Thanks to Garrett Wadford and Bird Attack Records, the boys behind KSICK are on their way to living the dream. Find KSICK’s music on SoundCloud, Spotify and YouTube.

CHRISTIAN PITTMAN & IAN POLAND

South Point Album

Christian Pittman and his cousin Ian Poland created their first original album South Point after years of playing music together. Up until their senior year of high school, the two participated in a separate band with other friends. When that band ended, it sparked the idea to make this project of their own original music. They wrote, recorded, sang and played everything themselves. Christian was on vocals, guitar and drums. Ian played bass, guitar and keyboard. They released their first single, “Great Escape,” and then their second single”City Lights” shortly after. City Lights was added onto a popular playlist on Spotify and got them thousands of plays!

Now at 15,000 plays and 6,000 regular monthly listeners, South Point is becoming more and more popular. Christian shared that he loves; writing music because of the poetry behind it. He likes writing songs that people listen to after having a rough day or when they want some feel-good music. The two felt they needed to create South Point because they have always played music and needed a solid project to work on. Zombie Paintball The ZET (Zombie Eradication Team) is on high alert due to an outbreak of zombies on the Northside of Jacksonville. Exact location is unknown but the zombies have been heard moaning “beer, beer” instead of “brains, brains.”Your help is needed in this eradication.

On Friday and Saturday nights between Sept. 29 and Oct. 28, you will have the chance to sit down at one of our mounted guns, take aim and fire away at our zombie horde eliminating as many as you can. Attraction cost is seven tickets ($7) per 50 tracer rounds and can be purchased on site. These rounds have been designed in a lab at the Center for Disease Control and are filled with an experimental liquid neurotoxin designed to infect the zombies and eradicate the horde.

Haunted Putt N’ Crawl

live action zombie hunt The zombies have taken over the brewery! Get your squadron together to clear the infestation! Up to 10 people in a group will be sent through the brewery every three minutes with four different zones and multiple zombie attacks!

Each squadron (18+) will be guided by a commander that will lead the volunteer mercenaries into an brewery’s infected zone swarming with up to 60 zombies per night. The mission: save the brewery by eliminating the infestation of zombies.

Make sure the zombies are truly dead, because several can re-spawn. Once your team enlists, Our Zombie Strike Force will equip you with new weapons where you will prepare to storm the brewery and eliminate the infestation throughout the brewery. You must show up at least 10 minutes prior to your scheduled time if you make a prior reservation to ensure a proper start time. Your entire team must be assembled or your squadron will move to the back on the reservation line or you can choose to leave a team member behind. If you do not make a reservation by purchasing a time slot on the ticket page, you can purchase admission for 10 tickets on site and wait in line to fill in with other teams of less than 10. Confirmed time slots, season pass holders and VIPs take preference and we have limited slots available each night. We can not guarantee the entire line will get to participate as it is first come first served.

When hurricane Irma was threatening all of Florida, finding supplies was a challenge for everyone in the hurricane’s radar. One hot commodity was bottled drinking water. Store shelves were empty and people were becoming desperate. Several local breweries and craft beer businesses offered to fill water containers or offer cans of water to those in need. We wanted to highlight a few of those helping breweries who kept our residents hydrated.

Wicked Barley Brewing Company filled containers with water (up to a total of 20 gallons) for everyone in need of water.

Green Room Brewing, also filled bottles or other containers with water.

Veterans United Craft Brewery, offered 50 free quart cans (“Crowlers”) of water.

Beer:30 (San Marco), a craft beer retail shop and tap room, offered 50 free quart cans (“Crowlers”) of water to local residents!

Hurricane Irma also affected several beer events scheduled for that weekend. The 4th Anniversary Party at Aardwolf Brewing has been postponed until further notice. The Bruval Craft Beer and Music Fest at the Seawalk Pavilion in Jax Beach was rescheduled to Saturday, November 18.
