The 2016-2017 Ultimate Go-To-Guide

FOR THE HOME

Welcome to We are excited to celebrate our 18th year of CharlottesvilleFamily, an adventure that started when Robin, a soon-to-be first-time mom in 1998, imagined a way to collect and share the many wonderful resources and experiences she was finding in the Charlottesville community. She envisioned a hub to connect us all. As mentioned in the front section, she created the website and within a year was joined by Jen as co-publisher and the rest, as they say, is history. With the inclusion of several other publications today alongside the Ultimate Go-To Guide (in your hands)—CharlottesvilleFamily’s Bloom magazine, Charlottesville Welcome Book, Charlottesville Wine & Country Weddings and Charlottesville Wine & Country Living—we bring you a new flip cover edition with a special section "For the Home." We wanted to bring you everything from builders, movers, insurance and real estate professionals to outdoor products and landscaping, waste & recycling, furnishings, electricians and so much more. And don't forget about everything for your pets. The Ultimate Go-To Guide you have here first began as our annual Family Directory in 2001 and today has been blended with the popular daytrip book we published first in 2008 and again in 2009 called the Let’s Go Guide to become an even more exciting product for parents to have an invaluable resource that would cover everything you could need from doulas to daytrips. Our goal in CharlottesvilleFamily is to be a parent’s ultimate resource, whether you are looking for great activities, parenting tips, local school news, daytrip ideas or guides to local family services. We do the research, leaving more time for you to enjoy the important stuff! At CharlottesvilleFamily, we are dedicated to “making parenting easier and growing up fun,” and it is our pleasure to serve you.

New to Charlottesville? Welcome! Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, your new community is known for year-round natural beauty and small-city sophistication. Charlottesville's countless accolades range from a variety of successes—from its delicious, locally sourced restaurants to its active, sports-centric community. Here, “green” is a way of life for our eco-conscious residents, businesses and local government. See below on how to get settled in your new home. Get on the Grid. Where you get your electricity depends on where you live, with one option per area. Power providers include AEP-Virginia, (800) 277-2177, aep.com; Central Virginia Electric Cooperative, (800) 367-2832, forcvec.com; Dominion Virginia Power, (888) 667-3000, dom.com; and Rappahannock Electric Cooperative, (800) 552-3904, myrec.coop. Fuel Up. Natural gas service is available from the city of Charlottesville for city residents and some parts of the county: Charlottesville Gas, 970-3211. Got Water? If you’re not in one of the county homes on well water, you’ll need to connect up with Charlottesville Water at 970-3800 or Albemarle County Service Authority at 977-4511.

Bee Green! Ultimate Go-To Guide is available at hundreds of locations throughout your area, but you can be green and read us on your phone, iPad or laptop by downloading your digital edition. No app necessary, and it’s free!

Take Out the Trash. County residents may use the Ivy Landfill or hire a private collection firm, many of which use our single-stream recycling center—so no sorting is necessary, and the majority of your waste gets recycled. The city provides weekly trash take-away; residents purchase stickers for 13-gallon or 32-gallon trash bags at grocery stores or an annual sticker available at City Hall, 970-3146. Keep in Touch. Landline phone service and Internet connections are available through CenturyLink, centurylink.com; Comcast, comcast.com; and Sprint, sprint.com. On the Road. Within 30 days of moving to the area, contact the DMV for a new driver’s license and to title and register your vehicle locally: Charlottesville DMV, (804) 497-7100. Rock the Vote. The easiest way to register to vote is to fill out a form while you’re at the DMV. Otherwise, call up the local registration office to get the necessary form: Albemarle County Voter Registration, 972-4173; City of Charlottesville Voter Registration, 970-3250. Make New Friends. Are you new to Charlottesville or newly retired? The Newcomers Club offers a variety of activities: 980-2725, cvillenewcomers. com. Make a Difference. There are lots of opportunities to help out those in need within our community. Check out volunteer opportunities on the United Way’s website: unitedwaytja.org.

A PLACE FOR

EVERYTHING & EVERYTHING

IN ITS PLACE

Organizing the Clutter Zones

H-14

The 2016-2017 Ultimate Go-To-Guide

Here are some great tips to get you started organizing the top clutter magnets: living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, closets and garages.

Living rooms often serve a variety of interests—a gathering space for the entire family, entertaining guests and so much more. Define what you need. What do you want when you look around your living room or family room? What are the activities and functions currently performed in this room? Are there any activities or functions that should be moved elsewhere? Create special areas. Use a closet or cabinet to store games in one place. Put the kids’ art center at a table in the corner. Consider having one large basket just for toys, so that the room isn’t overrun. Maximize storage space. Built-in storage units/areas are perfect for storing and organizing throughout your house. You can find a variety of ottomans that double as storage (remove the top to access the box inside). Sort it out. Shoes, clothes, hats, dishes — none of these items belong in the living room. Move them to their appropriate places. Take your meals elsewhere. If you take your meals in the living room, consider making a change. Sitting down at the table and eating can be far healthier for you. (Studies have shown that adults are likely to consume an average of 15 percent more calories while sitting in front of a TV.)

H-15

Our kitchens should rejuvenate us. So if you are needing more space, re-envision the space available to you. By grouping like items together, clearing the counters of clutter, re-working how you store supplies and equipment, and categorizing your food storage, you can whip your kitchen into shape.

Group like items together. Grouping like items and then designating specific zones for them will make cooking even easier. For example, designate one drawer for preparation utensils and another for serving utensils, or keep baking supplies in one cabinet. Remove all unnecessary items from your counters. How many items on your counters are used infrequently at best or perhaps never? Ask yourself these questions: How often do I use this? Do I use it at all? Do I have more than one of this item? Is this in the place that works best for my needs? Store items safely. No one needs to get a head injury from a heavy dutch oven, so remember to keep the heavy items down low and the lighter items up high, and don’t stack cans more than two high. Maximize your storage. Consider installing pull-out shelves to make it easier to reach things in the very back of cabinets. Or group like items, like bakery goods, in shallow plastic bins that slide out easily and that you can carry over to your countertop. Add hooks for coffee mugs or cooking utensils to the bottoms of your cabinets. Clear the kitchen table. Often the table becomes a catch-all as we arrive home from work, or it’s a staging area for various tasks. Take the time to find somewhere else to drop your keys, the mail, your purse and backpacks.

H-16

The 2016-2017 Ultimate Go-To-Guide

To properly organize your bathroom, clear your surfaces, sort your items into categories and maximize your available storage space. Start with the following: Make a stack of items you use daily. Ensure that all medications are out of the reach of children. Remove multiples or unused items into a “donate or sell” pile. Discard. Toss make-up, hair products and lotions you haven’t used in six months. Gather medications that have expired and ask your pharmacy about disposing of them. Clear surfaces. Just like in the kitchen, bathroom counters should only hold what you use regularly. Sort it out. Purchase buckets or caddies at the dollar store and separate your toiletries into categories such as: cough and cold, hair products, first aid, skin care and pain meds.

H-17

Are you guilty of having every closet jam-packed full of clothing, shoes and accessories. Get rid of those stacks of shoes. Divest yourself of those multiple pairs of black pants, shirts in every color and matching handbags in every shade. Apply the 80/20 rule. Most of us wear 20 percent of our clothes 80 percent of the time. So why keep so many extra clothes? It’s time to figure out what you wear and how often you wear it.

Eradicate. Go through your closets once every six months. Get rid of it if any of these are true: You can’t remember the last time you wore it. That button or zipper busted, or the hem or seam came loose more than six months ago and you still haven’t fixed it. You have had it for more than a year and it still has its price tags. It doesn’t fit you right now and is more than one size off. It is outdated, not your style or just the wrong color. There’s dust on the hanger or the item itself. Make it easier to purge next time. Reverse all your hangers (hook from the back of the pole forward) on the pole. After you wear an item, replace it on a hanger facing the right way. At the end of six months or a year, remove all the clothing from hangers still facing the wrong way. If they haven’t been worn in over a year, why keep them? H-18

The 2016-2017 Ultimate Go-To-Guide

Our garages typically become the “junk drawer” of the home. From Christmas decorations and large tools to the kids’ sporting equipment, it may seem like you’re drowning in clutter. Organizing the space is easier than it seems. Group items by category and don’t be afraid to get creative with your storage containers. Remember: your walls store just as much as your floor space. Recycle. Save those empty coffee cans, gum containers and jam jars—they’re more useful than you may think. Tackle the nuts and bolts of the garage (literally) by storing nails, washers, screws and other hardware in these containers. Label and shelf or stack them. You’ll instantly have more surface space. Draw the line. If you’re always tripping over a forgotten bicycle beside your car, create a designated space for your kids to park their wheels, whether those are bikes, scooters, wagons or large play trucks. Buy some colored tape and create a miniparking lot for your kids. Place the tape in rectangles big enough for each item to be parked inside. This will not only create a concise space for bulky items, but will also teach the kids how to put things away. Make the space more palletable. Grab some old pallets and either screw or fasten them to the wall. Place the long handles of your rake, shovel, weed-eater and other lawn equipment between the boards to hold them upright. These are also useful for storing your kids’ sporting gear during the offseason—lacrosse sticks, baseball bats or tennis racquets.

Home Maintenance

Checklist

Home maintenance is sometimes bumped off of our radar when it involves tasks that only need to be done on a biannual or annual basis.
