For nearly 20 years, the name IPS Empress has been associated with the highest level of esthetics in the reproduction of natural tooth characteristics. With more than 37 million restorations fabricated with IPS Empress to date, the system has gained a reputation for producing long-lasting, natural-looking results and maintaining high quality standards.

Over the years, the IPS Empress System has been further developed keeping pace with the latest trends in cosmetic dentistry. As a result enhancements have been made to the material’s esthetics, function and processing properties.

IPS Empress Direct is a universal nano-hybrid filling material for direct esthetic restorative procedures. IPS Empress Direct offers a high gloss polish and the lifelike opacity, fluorescence and opalescence necessary to create beautiful and naturally esthetic restorations with remarkable efficiency.

In 2004, the system was further expanded and optimized with the introduction of IPS Empress Esthetic pressable ceramic. This was followed by the release of IPS Empress CAD in 2006, creating an opportunity for esthetic restorations to be milled chairside using CAD/CAM technology, and placed immediately.

Collaboration among dental professionals, researchers and color specialists led to the development of IPS Empress Direct, a new resin formulation maximizing handling characteristics, physical properties and uncompromised shade match. The high level esthetics and natural beauty of this new material makes IPS Empress Direct the ideal composite for use in combination with IPS Empress ceramics.

With dentin being more opaque than enamel, it is virtually impossible to restore the original optical properties of natural teeth using just one shade of composite.

IPS Empress Direct Dentin and Enamel shades feature calibrated translucencies that work together creating exceptional esthetics with accurate color match every time.

Two autoclavable shade guides depict the various shades and translucency levels of IPS Empress Direct. As with the IPS Empress all-ceramic shade guides, the shade tabs are made of high quality ceramic providing long term stability and consistent shade match over time.

Opalescence is evident in the incisal area of natural teeth.

In simple terms, this optical effect is based on the different ways in which long waves (red) and short waves (blue) of light are scattered. If a tooth is examined in ambient light it appears to have a bluish tinge, while in transmitted light this color changes to reddish-orange.

This effect can be imitated using the new Opalescent shade of IPS Empress Direct.

IPS Empress Direct features an even distribution of filler particles facilitating a quick and easy polish for a long-lasting lustrous shine, similar to both IPS Empress Esthetic and IPS Empress CAD.

Fluorescence is produced by special pigments found in dentin which absorb energy from UV light and immediately emit it as visible light. The shades of IPS Empress Direct have been calibrated to produce the effect of natural fluorescence.

The Dentin shades feature more opacious (7.4 – 7.9%) saturated chroma generating the basic color of the tooth from within, while the translucency of the Enamel shades has been adjusted to provide a natural depth to the restoration, diffusing the color of the dentin, similar to natural tooth structure. Further gradations in translucency can be achieved using the Translucent and Opalescent shades.

Astropol® and Astrobrush® It is recommended that all IPS Empress Direct restorations be polished with Astropol and Astrobrush. Astropol finishers and polishers feature fine diamond particles producing a smoother surface on nano-hybrid composites, while the specially formulated

polishing medium within Astrobrush polishing brushes generate high gloss results.

Exceptional handling and simple, stress-free application - layer by layer Radiopacity [%Al] Achieving natural esthetics with IPS Empress Direct is a simple task. The true-to-nature shades and calibrated translucencies eliminate the need for complicated “recipes.” Determine the

dentin and enamel shades using the IPS Empress Direct ceramic shade guide and simply replace the missing tooth structure with the appropriate material; replace dentin with the corresponding

dentin shade, and enamel with the corresponding enamel shade.
