Sanja Pilić



Sanja Pilic, poet and writer, was born in 1954 in Split. She graduated from the School of Applied Arts, Department of Photography. She worked as a photographer. She has worked with the Autonomous Women's Home in Zagreb and worked with abused children. She is an independent artist and lives and works in Zagreb.

The Crumbs from the Living Room In 1995, author Sanja Pilic received the coveted Ivana Brlić Mazuranic Award for her novel "The Crumbs from the Living Room". The story revolves around a Zagreb family who is preoccupied with financial problems. The whole story is told from the point of view of the boy Janko who is also the main character of the novel. A 10-year-old boy brings us everyday situations that he and his family are occupied with.


The novel is written humorously from a boy's perspective. The author wanted to convey the stories of many families and their difficult lives, but in a humorous way, from the perspective of a boy whose adult problems sometimes seem ridiculous. Still, Janko empathizes with his parents and wants to help them as much as he can by writing.


Summary: The book is about an unusual family with big money problems. • Janko is a smart boy who wants to become a journalist and knows everything in school but hates learning rhymes by heart. He is in love with Moran. Morana is a student who is very strange to him. • Janko's father is an unemployed philosopher who is trying to make money by making jewelry at home. His mother is a cartoonist in a Zagreb movie, and sister Marina is a crazy high school girl who constantly cares about her appearance, hairstyle and nails. • She wants to solve her own family problems. Janko decides to make a robot. He gave the name Robotko, he knows how to walk, talk and think and is able to find answers to all questions. • At the end of the school year, Janko and his friends show what they know on the school play, but Janko is most famous for his Robotics. Jank's dad got money for jewelry making and they didn't have a problem with the money back then and they were very, very happy.

Janko - a 10 year old boy who in a charming way thinks he is very intelligent. Although he tries hard to understand his parents, he sometimes fails. He can't understand their financial problems and credits, but more than anything, he wants to help them. So he decides to hire himself and earn you money by writing, though he doesn't like writing. His imagination is lush and he decides to create a Robot who will talk and walk. No one believed he could do it, and when Robotko was done, everyone admired him. He is very sensitive. Sister Marina sometimes gets on his nerves, but he still helps her with everything. Janko would like to achieve something in life by doing what he loves best. He has fallen in love with Morana, and since he has been in love his life seems to be more beautiful.


Jaca - Janko's mother. She graduated from high school and works in a Zagreb film where she deals with coloring, that is, drawing cartoon figures. Since the crisis, there is less and less work to do. He also attends a foreign language school and loves to practice yoga. DĹžozef - Janko's father. He completed his philosophy and is engaged in the sale of jewelry and beads. She listens to her wife and does whatever she wants around the house. Although it seemed that the crisis and the sale of jewelry stopped, a large order arrived, so he made money and took his family on vacation. Marina - Janko's sister. Janko thinks she is very boring and only takes up space in the house. She is focused on her love problems all the time, and often talks about them, which gets Janka on her nerves. She teaches art and loves to experiment with hairstyles. She dresses ridiculously and is constantly in love with another boyfriend, which makes Janka very nervous.


Robotko - The robot Janko made. He could talk and walk, he was very smart and he could understand different languages. Although everyone initially laughed at Janko about the robot, he eventually made it successful.
