FROM THE PRINCIPAL
The 2024 Community Report highlights the diverse achievements, vibrant activities, and the personal growth of our students throughout another dynamic and inspiring year at Ivanhoe Grammar School.
We take immense pride in every student’s development — academically, in sport, through theatre and music, and in the many co-curricular opportunities available across the School. This growth is where character and grit are forged, and it reflects the core of an Ivanhoe education: Developing Young People of Character.
PURPOSE: DEVELOPING YOUNG PEOPLE OF CHARACTER
At the heart of Ivanhoe Grammar School’s mission is our unwavering commitment to nurturing wellrounded individuals. We focus on three essential dimensions of character:
Moral Character Civic Character Performance Character
Being a good person Contributing to the common good Giving one’s best effort
These attributes are foundational to our educational approach for the following reasons:
1. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Moral, civic, and performance character are vital to a student’s holistic growth.
» Moral Character fosters empathy, ethical behaviour, and responsibility.
» Civic Character promotes community engagement, active citizenship, and social awareness.
» Performance Character cultivates resilience, perseverance, and self-discipline—key traits for academic and personal success.
2. SOCIAL INTERACTION
In an increasingly digital world, schools serve as essential spaces for human connection.
» Moral character helps build positive relationships and navigate complex social dynamics.
» Civic character nurtures respect for diversity and fosters a commitment to social justice.
» Performance character equips students with goal-setting abilities, collaborative skills, and a drive for excellence across academic and cocurricular domains.
3. ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT
Students who develop strong character tend to thrive academically.
» Moral integrity encourages focus and discipline.
» Civic engagement broadens learning through service initiatives such as the Cambodia Service Trip, 300 Blankets, and partnerships with Big Group Hug.
» Performance character enhances learning through perseverance and motivation.
4. PREPARATION FOR FUTURE ROLES
We prepare students to become ethical leaders and engaged citizens of the future.
» Through a focus on character, students are equipped with the integrity, teamwork, and strong work ethic that employers and universities value.
» Our graduates emerge as entrepreneurial leaders, carers, and creators in a rapidly changing world.
5. COMMUNITY AND GLOBAL IMPACT
» Ivanhoe Grammar School proudly shapes students to understand their place in the wider world.
» Our innovative Year 7 and 8 Global Education subject exemplifies this vision, nurturing students’ sense of social responsibility and global citizenship—preparing them for lifelong contribution as both students and alumni.
STRATEGIC INITIATIVES

AN IVANHOE
LEARNER
An Ivanhoe Learner is the embodiment of a young person of character.
It is our priority to integrate the attributes of an Ivanhoe Learner into every aspect of the learning experience. We do this so that whatever students set out to accomplish, both in school and in life, they will do so in accordance with the traits of a young person of character.
From the Early Learning Centre, through to our longest-serving staff, our community of Ivanhoe Learners extends beyond the classroom. Staff, students and families alike are committed to a life of enquiry and learning; from each other and the world around us.
Throughout all experiences at Ivanhoe Grammar School – curricular, co-curricular and community –we strive to embody these characteristics, nurture them in our students and lead by example.
COMMITMENT
Ivanhoe Grammar School is committed to the principles of Australian Democracy which includes the process of elected government, adhering to the rules of law and equal rights for all before the law. In addition, the School believes in freedom of religion, freedom of speech and association and promotes the values of openness and tolerance.
ATTRIBUTES OF AN IVANHOE LEARNER
We have the confidence and tenacity to take responsible risks to extend our capacity, persevere when presented with a challenge, and learn from our mistakes.
We value being original and creative in our thinking; being curious and seeking opportunities to introduce new ideas or ways of doing things.
We develop intellectually, physically and emotionally in a balanced way, enhancing wellbeing.
We value the input of others and seek opportunities for shared effort across a range of methodologies and environments.
We value acquiring and building moral judgement in order to be autonomous and responsible.
We use our own ideas and experiences and those of others to support our own learning and development.
We take on the feelings and perspectives of others and act intuitively to support them.
ENGAGED COMMUNITY
Ivanhoe Grammar School continues to enjoy strong enrolment numbers in excess of 2,500 students across all four campuses. All enrolment places have now been allocated in our key point of entry, Year 7 2026, at both campuses, with a highlight again this year being the interest from siblings of current students and children of Old Ivanhoe Grammarians who are accepting places, thus indicating a high degree of parent satisfaction with the School.
Our bespoke Year 9 University Campus continues to attract significant attention and once again proved to be a popular point of entry for some students looking to complete their final years of study at Ivanhoe Grammar School. Although our main points of entry in the senior school are Year 7 and Year 10, Year 9 is fast becoming an entry point of choice.
It is also pleasing to note that all Open Mornings conducted at Ridgeway Campus and Buckley House in 2024 were fully subscribed, with significant waitlists of families wanting to attend. Likewise, Plenty Campus registered record numbers for Open Mornings, which is a reflection of the reputation that the School enjoys both within our local community and our wider feeder area.
Data continued to play a key role in engaging with our community. Follow-up surveys conducted after Open Mornings and events provided valuable insights into enrolment trends.
We also continued our Year 12 Parent Survey in 2024, whereby all parents of Year 12 students were asked several key questions about their child’s final year at school and their eventual ATAR score and tertiary placement (if applicable). Again, every question on the survey received unprecedented endorsement from the parents, including ‘How satisfied are you with your child’s tertiary placement?’ This attracted a weighted score of 9.04 out of 10, for ‘Extremely Satisfied’.
Community engagement through events remains highly popular, with our parent group actively creating opportunities for families to connect socially. Annual events such as the Christmas Lunch, Mother's Day Lunch, Spring Lunch, International Women’s Day Breakfast and the Father's Day Breakfast continue to grow in popularity.

HIGH QUALITY LEARNING
ACADEMIC LEARNING
The 2024 academic year at Ivanhoe Grammar School was exceptionally busy and productive, marked by a wide array of learning activities both within and beyond the classroom. Our commitment to nurturing academic excellence within a holistic education is evident in the diverse range of experiences provided to students.
In 2024, we saw further advancement in our One School curriculum. There have been many inspiring adventures across Arts, Humanities, Literature, Languages, Health, and STEM. These subjects were enriched by innovative teaching strategies and new units of study designed to expand students’ global perspectives and critical thinking. Notable new areas of study included Politics, Financial Literacy, and Global Education. A major review of the University Campus Program resulted in a suite of exciting, Future-focused recommendations that will embed the best of the current program and open further opportunities for immersive and out-of-class learning. Our Academic Extension programming has flourished, offering students greater opportunities for deeper learning and challenge. The substantial growth in this program reflects our commitment to catering to the diverse learning needs of our student body.
DIGITAL LEARNING AND TEACHING
Digital learning and teaching have become more central to our practices, with teachers exploring new ways to use technology to enhance learning. Digital tools improve outcomes and develop futureready skills, including the use of AI. Their integration continues to transform:
» Access to broader learning resources
» Customised learning pathways
» Variety in learning modes and products
» Insights via analytics
» Greater efficiency in teaching and learning.
A highlight was the August Professional Learning Day, where our talented teachers led dozens of workshops showcasing new digital tools that expand and enrich learning. This collaboration empowered educators to further integrate technology, driving innovation and student growth.
GROWTH COACHING AND PEDAGOGICAL LEADERSHIP
Growth Coaching is an important mechanism for the professional development of teachers. It supports teachers in reflecting on practice, setting goals, and enhancing teaching. We aspire to a culture of continuous growth as teachers, energising our classroom practices towards the goal of improving student outcomes.
A major structural change in 2024 was consolidating pedagogical leadership under cross-campus Heads of Pedagogy, now engaged in coaching teachers across Ridgeway, University, and Plenty Campuses. This structure supports our One School vision. Curriculum Leaders and Instructional Coaches now collaborate under unified leadership, using data from student achievement, curriculum priorities, and observations to drive improvement.
As we reflect on 2024, our community has made significant strides in enriching education. Developments in our One School curriculum, digital pedagogy, leadership, and Growth Coaching underscore our deep commitment to teaching and learning excellence.
Congratulations and thank you to our dedicated teachers and staff. The partnership between school and home remains pivotal to student success, and we are grateful to our families for their steadfast support.

HIGH QUALITY LEARNING
CO-CURRICULAR LEARNING
At Ivanhoe Grammar School, we believe that a truly well-rounded education is not confined to the classroom. Our co-curricular programs exist to help students discover who they are, what they value, and how they can lead with purpose.
We engage students in co-curricular programs not just to build specific skills, but to challenge and shape their character. These are the programs where students learn to persist, to lead, to serve others, and to grow into compassionate contributors to their communities. Co-curricular involvement is also one of the most powerful ways students build a sense of belonging to each other and the wider Ivanhoe community, both during their time at school and long after they graduate.
Beyond the students themselves, these programs serve a broader purpose: connecting students, staff, families, and alumni. They form the fabric of our vibrant school community, creating the friendships, shared experiences and touchpoints that define a connected and caring school culture.
GROWTH THROUGH CHALLENGE AND CONNECTION
Ivanhoe offers a wide and inclusive range of cocurricular opportunities, as befits an open-entry school of more than 2,500 students. Each program is designed to challenge students in meaningful ways, fostering the values of the Ivanhoe Learner while also connecting them with peers and mentors who share their interests.
Sport, with nearly 30 options on offer, is a cornerstone of this approach. Our compulsory AGSV/APS summer and winter seasons emphasise resilience, teamwork, and commitment. Crucially, we believe in participation for all, regardless of skill level, because we know the lessons learned on the field go well beyond the scoreboard. Representing the school each week gives students a sense of pride, purpose, and community.
In theatre, students build character through performance. Productions such as Me and My Girl (Ridgeway Campus) and The Addams Family
(Plenty Campus) demand dedication, courage, and cooperation. These moments of performance are the product of rigorous rehearsal and collective ambition, and they also forge deep bonds among cast, crew, and audience. The farewell to Mr Shaun Murphy, our long-serving Director of Performance, was a testament to the lasting impact these programs can have on both students and staff.
Our Music Program is similarly powerful. Whether rehearsing in ensembles or performing in events like More Than Words and the Piano and Instrumentalists Competition, students develop not only technical skill but also discipline and the joy of shared artistry.
The Cadet Unit, supported by the Australian Defence Force, is one of the largest in the country. Involving nearly 600 students, the unit offers unmatched opportunities to grow as a leader under real challenge. Through field exercises, ceremonial responsibilities, and up to 11 nights of camp, cadets learn discipline, teamwork, and resilience. In a time when many schools have stepped away from cadets, Ivanhoe proudly continues to invest in it as a premier leadership development pathway.
Our IDEALS Program, which runs in parallel with cadets, has grown rapidly. Now involving around 250 students across both campuses, it gives like-minded young people a space to collaborate, take initiative, and serve their communities. Whether working with Big Group Hug, 300 Blankets, or through events like Dinner for the World, these students experience the impact they can have on others and the joy of service-driven leadership.
In 2024, our global and cultural immersion programs continued to offer students new perspectives and challenges. The Cambodia Service Project — though now focused on Year 11 — involved nearly 100 students, while 2025 will see the launch of our new Dampier Peninsula cultural exchange. These experiences ask students to step beyond their comfort zones and see the world through different eyes experiences that often leave lasting impressions on how they choose to lead their lives.
Debating also provides a compelling stage for personal growth. Our inaugural Inter-Campus Championship in 2024 brought our top debaters together in spirited competition, while our continued involvement in the Debaters Association of Victoria and annual Greenway Cup show the consistent excellence of our students. Through debating, students learn to articulate ideas, listen actively, and respectfully challenge the views of others — all essential tools for ethical leadership.
Outdoor Education remains one of the most transformative experiences we offer. Each year level’s program is scaffolded to gradually push students out of their comfort zone, culminating in the Overnight Solo on the Year 10 Camp — a profound opportunity for self-reflection and resilience. There is no better metaphor for character development than meeting challenges in the natural world with courage and confidence.
MORE THAN ACTIVITIES: A FOUNDATION FOR BELONGING
At the heart of each of these programs lies a deeper aim: to help students feel seen, valued, and connected. Whether it’s the thrill of performing on stage, the camaraderie of a hard-fought match, the quiet satisfaction of service, or the stillness of the overnight solo, these experiences shape young people in ways academic achievement alone cannot.
Through co-curricular life, our students learn who they are. They become leaders not just in title, but in action and empathy. They forge friendships that transcend year levels and backgrounds. They connect with staff as mentors and role models. Families and alumni find themselves drawn into a community united by shared pride and purpose. This is why we do what we do. Our co-curricular programs are not extras — they are essentials. They are where an Ivanhoe education comes alive.

EXCEPTIONAL STAFF
Our purpose is to build young people of character and one of the ways in which we do this is to immerse our students in an environment where character is modelled for them. Our staff are the key role models for our students in this regard and work to do exactly this across our School. We also continued to see many examples of our people living out our Ivanhoe Learner Attributes of Courageous, Innovative, Balanced, Collaborative, Ethical, Reflective and Compassionate.
The work ethic of our staff across all campuses gave testimony to their resilience and commitment to our students’ learning and saw the School thrive in 2024. The journey of ensuring Ivanhoe attracts, retains and develops exceptional staff continued through a highly demanding and difficult time across the education sector. Our school continued to experience success in recruitment and was able to build on our existing exceptional staff cohort in a manner reflective of our strategic purpose and our considered approach to workforce planning.
Staff engaged in professional learning across a range of disciplines, with Professional Development Days focusing on learning for Academic staff and the continuation of our coaching and mentoring model. Included in this was the ongoing training of all staff in the area of Child Safety, which remains our highest priority in all facets of School operations and planning.
A key pillar of our Strategic Plan for 2024 was the embedding of the Ivanhoe Charter for Leadership. The charter was written to highlight the key characteristics and observable behaviours that we, as a community, expect to see in the way in which our leaders conduct themselves. It was used as a central element in the recruitment process for our new leaders and was shared with both internal and external candidates. This charter provides clarity around our community’s expectations of leaders and will form the basis of all professional learning and growth in leadership practices across the School.
GREAT PEOPLE MAKE GREAT SCHOOLS
We again acknowledge the importance and committed work of our Professional Services Staff who work in support of our academic staff. This staff cohort provides a vast array of outstanding professional services across all of our campuses. Included in these services are Finance, IT, Grounds and Maintenance, Advancement, Marketing and Communications, Registrar, Alumni, Reception, Nursing, Personal Assistants, Office Administration across Middle and Senior Years, in Co-curricular, VCE & IB, Sport and Music programs, People and Culture, Library Services and a vast array of technicians working in a range of academic subject areas such as Science, Food Technology and the Arts.
Our People and Culture team partnered with key stakeholders in developing and enabling the staffing structures and resourcing to best support student learning, particularly in the area of Individual Needs learning and also in our extensive Performing Arts, Sport and broader
co-curricular program. On a practical level, the team continued the consolidation and review of its employment lifecycle processes and workflows, benefiting from the efficiencies of evolved and embedded practices. Our practices have enabled efficient and timely engagement with potential candidates for employment and have streamlined our induction processes, allowing for a great deal of automation in supporting staff as they begin or continue their professional journeys at Ivanhoe. Of course, the personal touch and connection remain a high priority and key element of the successful transition into our School that our new staff experience.
