The Brown and White is a quarterly newsletter for alumni and supporters of Ivanhoe Grammar School.
Cover photo: 110 years after humble beginnings as St James’ Grammar School (centre) in 1915, Ivanhoe Grammar School now comprises (clockwise from top left) Ridgeway Campus, Plenty Campus, University Campus and Buckley House.
This year has been one of progress, strengthened engagement and growing momentum across the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association.
Importantly, every initiative we have undertaken this year has been closely aligned with our core purpose: to reach, connect and support our alumni community. This focus has guided our decisions and ensured that our efforts continue to enrich the lives of both current students and alumni alike.
A major milestone this year was the launch of our podcast, The EgoYah. This initiative has quickly become a dynamic platform for sharing alumni stories and insights. Across eight episodes, I have had the privilege of interviewing alumni in varying career and life stages, uncovering learnings and insights from their journey since school. The response has been outstanding, with over 1,000 downloads and a growing list of suggested guests.
We also expanded the podcast by incorporating previous interview content originally produced through the Old Ivanhoe Law Society (OILS). These legacy conversations now sit proudly within the EgoYah platform, enriching our catalogue of alumni voices and making their perspectives accessible to the broader community. All episodes can be found by searching ‘EgoYah’ on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, and we encourage listeners to like and subscribe.
Our partnership with the School was further strengthened through the formalisation of a tutoring program at both the Ridgeway and Plenty Campuses. These weekly sessions provide current students with high-quality academic support from high-achieving recent graduates. The program also offers meaningful part-time employment to younger
alumni, reinforcing our commitment to supporting them as they take their first steps beyond school.
Financially, the OIGA reached a major milestone. The Buckley Fund Scholarship has now grown to a level where it is fully self-sustaining and able to independently support a half scholarship annually. This achievement reflects years of careful stewardship and stands as an enduring legacy for future generations.
In addition, thanks to a very generous bequest from Hux Carver (’47), the Buckley Fund can now support a second student. Our focus now shifts to building the Centenary Fund to a similar level of long-term sustainability.
Supporting alumni in their personal and professional journeys has remained central to our work. Throughout the year, we facilitated numerous mentoring connections, career discussions, and opportunities for younger alumni to engage with experienced professionals across several industries. We also supported Elly McInerney (‘19) in securing sponsorship for international representation, with contributions from alumni, past parents and a direct OIGA sponsorship.
A highlight of the year was the return of alumni, spanning more than three decades and a wide range of professions, to speak with Year 9 students about careers, study pathways, and personal development. Their generosity in sharing their experiences is deeply appreciated.
Finally, our reunions and engagement events have enjoyed some of the strongest attendance in recent memory, demonstrating the enduring strength and warmth of our community.
Thank you to all who contributed to a terrific year. I look forward to building on this momentum in the year ahead.

Buckley Boys/Brown Era Lunch
Tuesday 25 November, Buckley Hall
Development Manager Geoff Brown (’62), OIGA President Michael Bacskos (‘09) and Principal Gerard Foley hosted a passionate group of 92 alumni and partners for the final reunion of the year. For the first time, students who attended the School under the Headmastership of Charles Sligo from 1974-1980 were also invited to the event.
Following the traditional service at the School Chapel, guests were entertained by songs from the School’s very talented music team, after which Michael Bacskos reviewed the OIGA’s major activities and initiatives for the year. Principal Foley then brought the guests up to date on school capital projects, alumni news, enrolment levels and sporting achievements.
A Living Treasure plaque (90 years) was presented to John Withers (‘53) while unfortunately Charles Hider (’53) was unable to attend to collect his award. Life Memberships (80 years) were presented to Bob Batrouney (’63), John Taig (‘62) and Hugh Wilkinson (’63).

Donor Impact Statement 2024 – 2025
On behalf of the Principal, Gerard Foley, and the Chair of the Board of Governors, Daniel Proietto (’96), we express our thanks to the generous donors from our Ivanhoe family who have contributed to the Scholarship, Library and Building Funds. We have also established a new prize being the de Boos Family Prize for ‘Theory of Knowledge’, while Randal Marsh (’77) has continued his patronage of the arts as well as honouring his mother Norma with the Norma Marsh Scholarship. We have had two students attend the School for their senior education as a result of this scholarship who would otherwise not have had the opportunity.
The last two years of philanthropic support is highlighted by two incredible bequests to the School from the late Edward ‘Hux’ Carver (’47) and the late Peter Rule (’65). Their generosity has added them to our existing Life Benefactors, reminding us of the gratitude, deep respect and love they had for their School. It also highlights the importance of celebrating an Ivanhoe education and supporting the ongoing future of the School. We also received bequests from the late Frances Stenfors (honorary alumni) and the late Wayne Smith (’75)
Of note, we also have an amazing group of staff members who have exemplified Sydney Buckley’s culture of giving by donating to the Staff Supported Scholarship. In ten years, we have assisted three students in completing their Ivanhoe education.
Finally, to the parents, alumni and volunteers who give their time, supporting the students in many endeavours, we acknowledge your tireless contribution.

Law Moot Winner
Congratulations to Oscar Hales (’20) and his team, the Langites, on winning the 2025 Geoff Giudice Memorial Employment Law Moot!
The competition is named in honour of Geoff Giudice AO, a titan of industrial relations, who served as a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia from 1997 to 2012 and as President of Fair Work Australia from 2009 to 2012.
Oscar acted as Senior Counsel for a team of first-year law students with no prior experience in employment law or mooting, guiding them through a challenging and highly competitive field.
ICF 2025 World Championships
At the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships 2025 in September, three of the six male Australian paddlers were alumni! Kaylen Bassett (’15), Ben Ross (’21) and Tristan Carter (’17) competed at this global showpiece event, joining 232 paddlers from 41 nations taking part. Competing both individually and in the team event, the boys did not take home medals but qualified for the finals of the C1 event. This is a fitting reflection of their dedication to the sport and the strong opportunities provided through the School’s sporting program.

Oxford Dreaming
Following completion of his Bachelor and later Master of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Melbourne, Mathew Huang (’17) has started his PhD in Engineering Science at Oxford University.
Mathew’s research will focus on measuring early indicators of Alzheimer’s, dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases. Current diagnostic methods are costly and not well suited to screening large populations efficiently, and his work aims to help overcome these limitations and improve early detection.
Triple B&F Winner
Gun OIGFC onballer Billy Murphy (’14) has won his third consecutive VAFA Best & Fairest award. This season, he won a second Premier B Section B&F (the G T Moore Medal), while teammate Alex Mirkov (’17) finished third in the voting, and Tom Kellock (‘13) won the goal kicking award with 68 goals.
In 2023, Billy won the Premier C award, the same year the Old Boys were premiers. Billy has already recommitted to the club for 2026 and has high hopes of the club going a step further and earning promotion to A Section.
Touch Footy
The 2025 UniSport Nationals championships on the Gold Coast in October saw three alumni competing in the touch footy competition. Jess Hooker (’23) and Chloe Nightingale (‘22) represented University of Melbourne and were coached by Avena Henriksen (’24) and finished in 8th place.
Caitlin Malara (’24) played for Monash University, coached by Joshua Hogan who is the School’s Head Sport Coach, and finished third. This festival brings together over 6,500 athletes and staff from 40 universities across the country.
After a long journey Andrew Prideaux (’90) saw his commentary on the book Job: Enduring Hope successfully published in 2024.
Job became the topic for his Master’s thesis at Ridley Theological College. It was officially launched at Merri Creek Anglican Church in Fairfield, where Peter Carolane (’93) is the vicar. A number of Andrew’s friends from the School were in attendance.
Andrew is pictured with his father Richard, a staff member at Ridgeway Campus for over 20 years.

Our Youngest Ever Student
The School Archives recently received some marvellous memorabilia from the estate of Graeme Smith (’53) who passed away earlier this year. This included a set of school cufflinks from the 1940s, a wooden napkin ring etched with the School badge, and an almost impossibly small pair of leather gloves with a remarkable story behind them.
Graeme’s family lived in Rose Street, Ivanhoe. As a toddler, he would follow his older brother Alonzo Smith (’38) to the School each day. This led Sydney Buckley to suggest that Graeme stay and enrolled him in the Preps class before he had turned three years old! This makes him our youngest enrolled student while his 15 years at the School from 19391953 is one of the longest on record. Considering their age, the gloves are in remarkable condition. The photo shows Graeme holding his father’s hand in school uniform, proudly wearing his gloves.
EgoYah Podcasts –Uncovering Stories from Alumni
The Egoyah Podcast continues to thrive within our alumni community, surpassing 1,000 downloads and recording a 41% increase in engagement over the past month. We have now released eight episodes, with the most recent featuring Lauren Chan (’07) and Jess McCarthy (’12) from the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians Water Polo Club. All episodes are available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Additionally, all past podcast episodes from the Old Ivanhoe Law Society have now been uploaded to our platforms.
Mindset Expert
From primary school teaching to becoming a sleep coach, Jordan Stanton (‘13) has totally transformed his life. After graduating with a Bachelor of Education at La Trobe University in 2017, Jordan taught in Melbourne before moving to London in 2022.
However, in 2024, he suffered a serious brain injury doing Muay Thai boxing. His gradual recovery led him to focus heavily on yoga, exercise and sleep, an experience which inspired him to train as a sleep therapist and establish his own business as Sleep and Mindset Coach. He now helps people to sleep better, recover better and perform better in all aspects of their lives.
In August, Jordan (above right) and his friend Nick Foster ran the length of the UK (1,380kms) in 21 days to raise money for the Rays of Sunshine, a UK charity for seriously ill children.
Re-building the School
It is always great to see alumni back at the School. Eren Gover (’19), a former Plenty Campus student, completed a Bachelor of Engineering at RMIT University in 2024 and is working at Building Engineering, which is one of the main contractors building the Fraser Centre at Ridgeway Campus.
Eren has been at the School regularly since October as part of the construction team and recently shared his career journey with Year 12 students. A group of fortunate students even enjoyed an exclusive site visit with Eren as their guide!
Leading the Band
As has been well publicised, Melbourne set a world record for a bagpipe ensemble in Federation Square in November as a tribute to AC/DC and the band’s iconic music video for ‘It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)’.
Leading the 374 pipers in unison was Campbell Wilson (’97) who was asked to lead the ensemble in his role as Senior Pipe Major at the City of Melbourne Highland Pipe Band. Year 9 student Charli Millar is also a member of this band and was one of the youngest pipers to take part. Just to complete our alumni’s involvement in the day, Brett ‘Wolfie’ Wolfenden (’95) is the drummer of The Casanovas, who was the support act for AC/DC at their MCG concert!
The photo above shows Campbell at far right with Lord Mayor Nick Reece, and the two of the original pipers who appeared with AC/DC in 1976.
Aussie Diamond
After 12 years as a professional basketballer, Alice Teague-Neeld (’14) was selected for Australia in the series against South Africa in October.
As the 194th basketballer to be selected for the Aussie Diamonds, Alice made the most of her opportunities, winning Player of the Series despite not starting until Game Three. The Diamonds went on to win the series 3–0.
Visual Art Exhibitions
The art and design exhibitions held across both Ridgeway and Plenty Campuses in Term 4 celebrated the talent of our secondary students at all year levels. Family, friends and staff gathered to admire the creative accomplishments of the Class of 2025 in disciplines including Art Making and Exhibiting, Media, Product Design and Technology, Visual Communication Design and IB Visual Arts.
The presentations showcased a diverse array of innovative and captivating works developed throughout the year, reflecting their technical skill, conceptual depth and personal expression.
The prestigious Randal Marsh and OIGA awards went to the following students.
Plenty Campus
Randal Marsh Art and Design Award 1st Prize: Parin Techapan
Randal Marsh Art and Design Award 2nd Prize: Allegra Kalona
Randal Marsh Acquisition: Thomas Furlong
Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association Media Award: Miria Teh (above left)

Congratulations to all students for their wonderful contributions to this year’s exhibitions.
Prefect History
School history was made in November when the School announced that three members of the Hopper family will be office bearers in 2026.
Triplets Maya, Kate and Will Hopper have attended Plenty Campus since Year 7. In 2026, Maya is School Captain with both Kate and Will as prefects, and all will be CUOs in the School’s cadet unit. Outstanding individuals and collectively a credit to the School. They are the children of Stephen Hopper (’81) and his wife Jodie (nee Poulter, IGGS class of 1983), who married in the School Chapel in 1991.
FUSE Awards
At the 2025 FUSE Australian School Esports Awards, Jason Coleman, Pedagogical & Curriculum Leader and Esports Coordinator, was a finalist in two categories: Outstanding Mentor in Esports and Esports Coach of the Year. These national awards celebrate educators and schools that are leading in integrating Esports as meaningful educational and extracurricular pursuits.
Jason’s recognition reflects his exceptional leadership and dedication to building a safe, inclusive, and innovative Esports program at the School.
The Spring Ensembles Concert
The Spring Ensembles Concert in September was a resounding success and showcased the extraordinary commitment and talent of the School’s musicians, orchestras and choirs. The standard of performance across all ensembles was exceptionally high, while the final contribution of Year 12 students to the program was a fitting demonstration of their excellence and dedication.
The evening’s success also reflected the guidance of the music staff, particularly Andrew Short, Head of Music Performance and Paul Smith, Director of Music, whose meticulous coordination ensured the seamless execution of this significant event. The concert was a credit to all involved and offered a superb conclusion to the performance calendar.
(L-R) Jodie, Kate, Will, Maya, Stephen
In the July holidays, a group of the School’s IB students travelled to the west Kimberley region to spend time on-Country with the Bardi-Jawa people. As part of their course, the students study Indigenous languages and language revitalisation initiatives, and the trip provided valuable lessons and brought Bardi culture to life. This inaugural cultural immersion trip has been a transformative experience for these students and will hopefully be the first of regular trips in future years.
Chess Competitions
The centuries old game of chess continues to grow in popularity, and the School has a strong history of success in competitions at both senior and junior levels. In October, the School’s Chess Team competed at the Northern Star Chess State Finals held at Xavier College. The event drew top players from across the state and Ivanhoe students rose to the challenge. Year 10 student Tedric Li emerged as the top player in his division, Year 11 student Young Zhang secured a bronze medal, while Year 7 student Heidi McMillan (pictured) earned a silver medal in the Secondary Girls State Finals, and was placed equal fourth in the State.
Fly Boy
Ridgeway Campus maths teacher Peter Hodge released his second book ‘Fly Boy’, in September. ‘Fly Boy’ chronicles the life of Peter’s great-uncle, Parker ‘Joe’ Hodge, a RAAF pilot who lost his life in the Netherlands East Indies during World War II. Peter spent more than three years researching Joe’s life, tracing journey from his birth in Beechworth through joining Australia’s elite air force. In addition to teaching, Peter is a freelance writer and previously spent three years as an Australian Volunteer Abroad at a rural Zimbabwean mission school.
Greenway Cup 2025
The Greenway Cup is a prestigious perpetual trophy awarded to the winning team in the annual debate between Ivanhoe Grammar School and Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School. First contested in 1932, this treasured tradition remains a highlight on the School calendar.
In the 2025 debate (‘That all Professional Sporting Competitions Should Be Separated By Age Groups’), the School’s team, arguing the affirmative, unfortunately fell just short, leaving the overall tally tied at 44 wins each for both schools. Despite the result, congratulations go to Year 12 student Tom Blackmore, who was deservedly named Best Speaker on the night.
Solving Future Problems
The School’s future problem-solving students continued their excellent result from the international conference 2025 when they competed in the Australian National Finals in October. The team of 11 students excelled with each member earning a medal, and both the Year 9 and Year 10 teams qualified for the 2026 International Conference in Indiana. The Year 10 Global Issues team comprising Hugo Lethbridge-Ford, Michael Reeves, Jai Sharma and James Short came first, and Magic Members won medals with Maddie Lim in first place and Tilda Jukes placed third.
Film Festival Winner
It could be the start of a career in film making for Year 11 student Ranjiv Bhar Ranjiv won the Best Year 11 Film and the coveted People’s Choice Award at the 2025 Student Film Festival for his film
‘The 3 Sides of Michael.’ Ranjiv’s film was shortlisted from over 100 entries, and comments from the judging panel highlighted the editing, creativity and storytelling resulting in a super piece of film.
Held at the ACMI in October as part of the Independent Schools Victoria Arts Learning Festival, this is a great achievement for Ranjiv and his talented support team, and also the Year 11 Media class at Ridgeway Campus.

AROUND THE SCHOOL
The Suitcase Series
Year 10 Plenty Campus drama students recently stepped into the spotlight at The Malthouse Theatre in Southbank for an unforgettable experience as part of The Suitcase Series. This educational program empowers students to explore the theme of Climate Change through a commissioned script and creative resources.
Students also had the opportunity to watch professional actors perform the commissioned piece, gaining insight into the craft and impact of live theatre.
The experience fostered critical thinking, resilience and social awareness, highlighting the power of drama as a tool for creative expression and social change.
Round Square International Conference 2025
In September, seven Ivanhoe Grammar School students and staff embarked on a transformative journey to the Round Square International Conference in Dubai, titled ‘Beyond The Dunes’. The event welcomed nearly 1,400 students from around the world.
International Students Luncheon
Hosted by the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association, this annual function for the School’s international students, and their parents and host families, celebrates and recognises their contribution to the School.
The difficulties of young students undertaking their secondary level studies in a foreign culture and environment cannot be underestimated, and this luncheon was an opportunity to wish them well in their upcoming exams and welcome them to the alumni community.
Attending this function with the students (pictured above) were Leisl Bruhn (Dean of International Students), Gerard Foley and Amber Sowden (Deputy Principal/ Head of Ridgeway Campus.)
Round Square is a global network of schools that emphasizes character and experiential education through its six guiding principles, or IDEALS. These are International Understanding, Democracy, Environmental Stewardship, Adventure, Leadership and Service.
The School has been involved with the Round Square organisation since 1996 largely through the work of Rod Fraser, Headmaster 1996-2015.
The conference fostered lasting international friendships and broadened perspectives on leadership, sustainability and global citizenship. Students returned with unforgettable memories and a renewed sense of gratitude and purpose.
SCHOOL SPORTING NEWS
Taekwondo
Congratulations to Year 5 student Beata Pajarillo for winning the Silver Medal in the Poomsae Division at the Australian Taekwondo National Championships in Adelaide in October. Poomsae is the practice of pre-choreographed techniques executed with clinical precision, power and poise. This marks Beata’s third consecutive year representing Team Victoria, which is an outstanding achievement.
Triathlon
The development of Year 11 student Bentley Crisp as an elite athlete continues to grow following his outstanding performance at the 2025 Triathlon Age Group World Championship in October. Held in Wollongong, Bentley finished 20th in the world in the Individual 16-19 age group and ninth in the Mixed 16-19 Relay, a remarkable result in this highly competitive event at world level. Bentley is also a member of the Australian Age Group Triathlon Team, further highlighting his talent and dedication.

Volleyball
Year 10 student
Ruby Longmuir recently returned from Doha, Qatar, where she represented Australia at the U18 Beach Volleyball World Championships in Doha. Daughter of Mark Longmuir (’84), Ruby, just 15 years old and her partner Ella, held their own against older, more experienced competitors delivering a wonderful performance at such a young age.

DEVELOPMENT
Development Roundup 2025
This year’s Annual Appeal celebrated the 110th Anniversary of Ivanhoe Grammar School’s foundation. The response from our community was very positive, with generous support directed towards our Scholarship, Building and Library Funds. In particular, named scholarships such as the Evelyn and Sydney Buckley Scholarship, the OIGA Centenary Scholarship and the Slater/Graham Scholarship received considerable backing.
The importance of bequests continues to be deeply valued and the stewardship of potential donors remains a priority. We are honoured to acknowledge a magnificent bequest from the Estate of Peter Rule, Class of 1965.
Staff Living Treasures
Congratulations to two former staff members who are now officially nonagenarians!
Neil Watt celebrated his 90th birthday in September. Neil joined the staff at the Memorial Junior School in 1961, and over the next 35 years, the School remained a central part of his life. Beyond the classroom, Neil was a leader of the School’s Cubs, Scouts and Venturers, with a plaque in the grounds honouring his services.
In 1993, Neil was appointed Senior Education Officer at Plenty Campus where the rural atmosphere of the Whittlesea area suited him perfectly. He became coordinator of career and course information and was involved in the Project Maths Program for keen maths primary students.
Neil retired from the School in 1995 and pursued his love of the outdoors, including volunteering as a guide at
Alumni Enrolment Reminders
Future enrolments at the School are now at record levels with strong demand for places from alumni families. However, it is important to remind those intending to lodge applications for their children that to receive preferential consideration, they must be a Life Member of the OIGA, and secondly, that the application must be made
This represents the largest gift ever received from an Old Ivanhoe Grammarian. Peter’s generosity will enable two students to attend Ivanhoe Grammar School on scholarship commencing in 2026. In keeping with Peter’s wishes, these scholarships will specifically support aspiring athletes. Despite the current economic challenges, it is heartening to witness the unwavering commitment of members of our School community who generously support the quality, global education that Ivanhoe Grammar School provides. We extend our sincere gratitude to all parent groups, the OIGA, Ridgeway Club members, and donors. Their financial contributions, along with countless hours of volunteer service, are essential to the wellbeing of our students and the future success of the School.
Healesville Sanctuary. While leading a quieter life these days, Neil remains devoted to his wife Claire, daughters and grandchildren.
The Very Reverend Dr Stuart Blackler turned 90 in October. Stuart was a valued and popular member of the academic staff from 1958-1966, teaching English and History, and serving as Housemaster for the boarders. In this role, he oversaw the considerable task of relocating the boarding house from Sherwood to the newly converted Locksley in 1964.
Stuart left the School in 1967 to become curate of Christ Church, South Yarra and part-time chaplain at Melbourne Girls Grammar School. In 1993, he was appointed as the Anglican Dean of Hobart at St David’s Cathedral where he remained until 2005. He remains close to former school colleagues and lives a quiet but fulfilling life with his wife, Dr Deane Blackler, in inner city Melbourne.

It is interesting to note that around 10% of our current students are children of alumni, some even grandchildren or great grandchildren, highlighting the enduring connection many families have with the School.
