It doesn’t feel long ago I was writing in the Term 2 edition of the Brown and White. How quickly the year progresses! In 2023, the OIGA hosted 14 reunions spanning all eras, including both interstate and international (London) gatherings. Our last official reunion was the cherished Buckley Boys/Brown Era luncheon where many of our most senior members of the School returned to Buckley Hall in late November.

Reunions serve as an important backbone to the OIGA calendar. I would like to thank Mirella BussoLee (Alumni Coordinator) for her enormous efforts in driving these events, Brianna Ablett (Alumni Assistant), and the extended OIGA committee for their contributions over the year. Pleasingly, a number of these events have been hosted at alumni businesses which has ensured further support to them.

Sporting Success

Many alumni will have seen and heard of the outstanding successes at our sporting clubs. Following on from the OIGA 2nd XI Cricket Team premiership in March, the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians Football Club had unprecedented success in 2023 with all three teams (Seniors, Reserves and U19’s) winning premierships. When combined with the school’s first XVIII premiership, the first since 1963, it capped off an incredibly successful year of football. Congratulations to the significant number of alumni involved in a variety of roles at these sporting clubs.

Congratulations are also extended to our OlGA Women’s Water Polo Team which won the 2023 Autumn State League WSL3 Championship held at MSAC. The water polo teams are always looking for new members if you are interested in joining.

The Ivanhoe Harriers concluded its most successful winter season for over 20 years. The men’s team finished in 4th place in Division 3 to conclude an excellent year with great representation from both past and present students.

Social Media Engagement

We have also seen record levels of engagement and involvement via our social media platforms including the OIGA website (with the growing alumni business directory), Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn. These platforms are leveraged to connect and support alumni and I would encourage readers to ’like’ and follow these sites for support, to capitalise on any relevant opportunities and to stay informed.

In addition, numerous interstate and international alumni have reconnected with the School through informal visits or tours, many of whom had not returned to Melbourne for several years.

Finally, I would like to congratulate all Year 12 students on completing their final year of studies and welcome them all into the alumni association. As they embark on their first step after graduating, the OIGA is here for support with career advice and mentorship, involvement in one of our many sporting groups or assistance with seeking employment.

During Term 4, several senior staff appointments were announced at both Ridgeway Campus and Plenty Campus.

Tom Rickards After seven years of significant service, Tom Rickards decided to pursue new career opportunities. Tom commenced at the School in 2017 as Head of Senior School/Deputy Head of Campus after 13 years at Carey Grammar. In 2019, he was promoted to his last role and has contributed positively to the direction of the School as a member of the Principal’s Executive. The School thanks Tom for his significant contribution and passes on its best wishes to him, his wife Lauren and daughters Gemma and Selby.

Russell Feben Russell Feben has retired after 27 years of outstanding service to the School.

He worked as a primary school teacher in the public sector for over 18 years before joining the School in 1996 as a Year 5 and Year 6 teacher. He undertook various leadership roles including Curriculum Coordinator and Deputy Head, before being appointed as Head of Buckley House in 2012. The School will miss this innovative and progressive educational leader and wishes Russell and wife Christine well in retirement.

Renata Rowe After 20 years of service, Renata Rowe retired at the end of 2023. Renata commenced in 2003 as Head of Secondary Years and became the Deputy Head of Campus in 2012. A significant and valued member of the Executive Team, Renata has stepped in several times as Acting Head of Plenty Campus. She was a much-valued pastoral support to countless families and a wonderful mentor to many staff. The School acknowledges Renata’s outstanding contribution, and wishes her and husband John many years of enjoyable retirement, together with daughters Scarlett (’09) and Shreya (’19).

Ty Hoggins Ty Hoggins has been appointed to replace Russell Feben and will commence in January 2024. Ty has strong primary educational leadership experience, together with a naturally collaborative and innovative style from his previous role as the Principal at Whittlesea Primary School. We very much look forward to welcoming Ty to the Ivanhoe Grammar School community.

Carolyn Mansour Carolyn Mansour has been appointed to replace Renata and comes to the School from Haileybury where she was the Head of Middle School (Girls). Carolyn has a wealth of leadership experience in student wellbeing and understands the complexities and challenges of working in a multi-campus environment. We look forward to welcoming Carolyn to the Ivanhoe community in 2024.

Amber Sowden Amber Sowden has been appointed to replace Tom Rickards and will commence in January 2024. Amber is an experienced senior leader with senior roles at Strathcona Girls Grammar School and Yarra Valley Grammar, with a passion for student and staff wellbeing.

Her leadership is focused on investing in positive relationships with staff, students and families and she is a strong advocate for proactive partnerships between school and parents.

Buckley Boys/Brown Era Lunch Wednesday 29 November – Buckley Hall President of the OIGA Michael Bacskos (‘09) and Principal Gerard Foley hosted a passionate group of 95 alumni and partners for the final reunion of the year.

Donor Impact Statement 2022 – 2023 A rich tradition of giving at Ivanhoe Grammar School can be traced back to 1919 when Reverend Sydney Buckley’s vision of expanding the School from one of 37 students, created in 1915, led to the purchase of Ridgeway Campus.

This would not have been possible without the generosity of friends of the School. Since that time, a strong tradition of generosity for the benefit of future generations of students has been an important part of the culture at Ivanhoe Grammar School.

The generous philanthropic support of our alumni, Ivanhoe families, staff and friends has never been more important. Our students are involved in many programs that help build a culture of giving, and we can support our young people of character by considering a gift to the School.

In the following pages we acknowledge all our donors who have contributed to our Scholarship, Building and Library Funds over the past two years. NOT ONE, NOT TWO, BUT THREE PREMIERSHIPS!!!

In an unprecedented Saturday in September at Trevor Barker Oval, the three Old Ivanhoe Grammarians football teams won their respective Grand Finals in an exhilarating day.

In warm and sunny conditions and in front of a large crowd of past players, alumni and supporters, the Ivanhoe teams adapted far better to the persistent sea breeze than their collective opponents.

Following a year marked by resilience, consistency and competitiveness, Old Ivanhoe undeniably emerged as deserving victors in each competition.

The final scores were: Under 19s OIG 13.10.88 defeated Marcellin OC 3.8.26 Reserves: OIG 4.11.35 defeated Mazenod OC 2.6.18 (Premiers C Section) Seniors: OIG 14.20.103 defeated Old Camberwell 9.8.62 (Premier C Section)

This means that the Firsts and Reserves will now be in B Section, while the Under 19s will move up to the Holmesglen Under 19 Division 2.

Needless to say, celebrations were long and hard, and thanks to the Terminus Hotel in Fitzroy North for accommodating a raucous re-watching of the three games.

Given the success of the School’s First XVIII winning their first AGSV Championship in 60 years, the future is incredibly bright for the long-term success of the club.

From their first game in 1964, this is a massive achievement for the club, and one of the few times in the history of the VAFA that this has been achieved.

Following on from the School First XVIII winning the AGSV Premiership for the first time in 60 years in 2023, we eagerly await the 2024 season, which already promises to be another extraordinary chapter in OIGFC history.

Well Done Ump! Congratulations to Andre Gianfagna (’05) who officiated his 100th AFL match in the last Home and Away match of the 2023 season. Formerly an AFL-listed player with Melbourne and later Captain of the Northern Blues, he joined the AFL rookie umpiring list in 2016. He was upgraded to the senior list for the 2018 season and made his umpiring debut that year. The entire alumni community and OIGA toast Andre (pictured second from right) on this magnificent achievement.

Keeping the community warm After completing his undergraduate degree in Project Management at RMIT and a Masters in Construction Law at the University of Melbourne, Peter Royce (’06) is now working as a Senior Project Manager at Gallagher Jeffs, an independent property advisory and project management practice.

However, in his spare time, Peter is President of 300 Blankets, a charity that provides friendship, material and food support to homeless people in Victoria.

A Round Square Service Trip by the School to Cambodia in 2005 sparked Peters passion for creating community networks. After first volunteering with St Vincent de Paul Society in their Soup Van program, he started walking through the Melbourne CBD with blankets for people living on the streets.

Initially, 300 Blankets focused on raising money to purchase blankets.

It now operates a twice-weekly Outreach Program, a weekly Soul Kitchen community dinner program and a fortnightly Care Package grocery delivery program. 300 Blankets also presents to schools and other organisations with a view to challenging stereotypes and deepening community understanding of the causes and impacts of homelessness.

Peter says he has been hugely encouraged by the interactions he has with the School. Students, teachers, and alumni have had a longstanding relationship with 300 Blankets and been volunteering with the Outreach Program since 2015.

HAVE YOU HEARD? While studying, Cheuk started practicing Taekwondo at the University of Melbourne and currently holds a 7th Dan black belt. He is also an international referee and recently qualified to become an international master and examiner in Taekwondo.

New Snapchat boss Tony Keusgen (’89) is the new Managing Director, Australia and New Zealand of Snapchat and says the multimedia messaging platform is more than just an app for kids! Tony joined the 12-year-old multimedia messaging app in May after a 20-month stint as Chief Customer Officer at data and tech company Quantium.

Tony is based in Sydney and leads Snap’s business across ANZ with responsibility for setting and executing the local strategy, while overseeing Snap’s business operations across both markets.

Cheuk was selected for the Australian Taekwondo Team which competed at the world championships in Korea in November and received 3rd placing in the Individual Male Under 65 event. His wife Sylvia won gold in the women’s Under 65 event and not surprisingly, their daughter Tiffany is also heavily involved with the sport.

Cheuk also remembers the late Peter Davies, who taught at the School for 33 years, as an inspirational teacher, and taught Cheuk that nothing is impossible to achieve. For Cheuk, those words have contributed considerably to his success in life.

Researching new frontiers

The recent sad passing of former staff member Nigel Kendall prompted Cheuk Chiang (’79) to contact the Development Office and pay his respects. Cheuk recalled how Nigel was a wonderful support to him, particularly when he failed his HSC exams which shattered his dreams of studying medicine. Nigel’s words inspired him to seek an alternative path and Cheuk eventually became a veterinary surgeon, establishing his own practice in Coburg in 1988 from where he continues to practice.

Jack Pead – out of his comfort zone After more than a decade working around the world, from Riyadh to Perth and from Geneva to New York, Jack Pead (’06) recently returned to Melbourne to work with ENGIE, a global leader in energy transition.

While working at Google and YouTube before Snap, Tony’s teenage kids thought he was ’super cool’. Now, having taken up his new role, that perception has gone to a whole other level!

Undertaking the demanding International Baccalaureate diploma at Ivanhoe Grammar School in 2005 has taken Dr Arnab Dasgupta (’05) to Lockheed Martin, one of the world’s leading aerospace and advanced technology systems.

Arnab was enrolled at the School in 2000. Choosing the IB path enabled him to complete an internationally recognised curriculum with a strong focus on mathematics and science.

School was followed by a double degree (Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering and Bachelor of Science) at Monash University followed by his PhD in Aerospace Engineering at the University of NSW in 2018.

Along the way, Jack completed an Arts/Commerce degree at the University of Melbourne, and a Masters in Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School. His working experience ranged from the Red Cross to the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, and the Trade and Mining sectors. Whilst studying in Boston, he met his now wife Daniela who is from Mexico and was working on her PhD in Gender, Peace and Security.

Jack was School Captain in his final year and deeply influenced by the Round Square program which the School embraced in 1996. The Round Square philosophy has helped inform his view in terms of adventure, the environment, and particularly international and intercultural learning.

In turn, this has considerably helped shape his personal and professional life.

While overseas, Jack remained in contact with the School and former classmates. He attended the New York reunion in 2020 and now that he is back in Melbourne, looks forward to attending the School Captains Assembly in February.

For six years, Hamish Goonetilleke (‘00) has dreamt of opening an aperitivo bar in the heart of Melbourne. So, when the space next to his blues bar, Beneath Driver Lane, became available earlier this year, he pounced.

Before long, he embarked across Italy on a three-week research trip, gathering ideas for Torino Aperitivo, which taps into the Italian ritual of eating small bites with a drink in the early evening.

With an impeccable Ivanhoe Grammar School pedigree – Past Chairman of the Board, the late Fred Watts CBE was his great grandfather – Hamish spent his entire schooling at Ridgeway Campus.

He completed a Bachelor of Business at Swinburne University in 2004 which provided him with a solid foundation to pursue his career in marketing and entrepreneurship.

After a successful foundational career in advertising, Hamish’s entrepreneurial activity has centred on the hospitality and liquor industry.

Award Winner Wood Marsh Architecture, founded by Roger Wood and Randal Marsh (’77) has been awarded the prestigious Jørn Utzon Award for International Architecture at the 2023 National Architecture Awards for their project Paris Apartment.

The award, named after the Danish architect best known for his design of the iconic Sydney Opera House, gave Wood Marsh the opportunity to showcase their appreciation of history, contemporary art and modern architecture.

Visual Art Exhibitions The Visual Art Exhibitions held in Term 4 were hugely successful and enabled the School community to celebrate and acknowledge the creative talents of students from both Ridgeway and Plenty Campuses. Works from the subject disciplines of IB Visual Arts, Art Making and Exhibiting, Media Studies, Product Design and Technology, and Visual Communication Design filled the studios.

At Ridgeway Campus, the Randal Marsh Awards were judged by Robert Buckingham (‘77) and Georgie and Alex Cleary of Alpha60. In addition, Tim Sligo, the Executive Director of Heide Museum of Modern Art and son of former school principal Reverend Charles Sligo attended the opening night, and was greatly impressed with the diversity and quality of work. The Plenty Campus exhibition was opened by artist Carmel Ritchie who acknowledged the wonderful presentations on display.

The Old Ivanhoe Grammarians Media Award, which recognises a media student’s level of innovation and technical competence was awarded to Ashley Syers (Ridgeway Campus, above left) for her film project title ‘My Rhapsodised Infatuation‘ and to Sophie Flower (Plenty Campus, above right) for her film ‘Monotonous.’ Congratulations to all students for their hard work and commitment.

A Notable Night!

The Night of the Notables was conceived by former teacher Greg Smith in the 1980s. This year, the event was held on the 1st November at both Ridgeway Campus and Plenty Campus.

Students investigate a notable person which culminates in a presentation for parents and friends at the event. This year the title of the event was updated to Notables - Catalysts for Change. In honour of Greg, the Greg Smith Prize for Notables -Catalysts for Change was established in 2021 by an anonymous donor. It is an academic award for the student with an exceptional presentation from both campuses. This year the prizes were awarded to James Fairbank (RC) and Tom Cilauro (PC).

STEM Enrichment Program

Quality School Food The Ridge Café at Ridgeway Campus was nominated as a finalist in the 2023 Restaurant and Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence (Site/ Industrial Caterer category). Every week, the Ridge Café services 3,500 students and staff members and is much-loved by the Ivanhoe community. Congratulations to Sam Nash at Chartwells and his six staff who make up the Ridge Café team.

In 2023, the inaugural STEM Enrichment Program at University Campus in partnership with La Trobe University commenced. The program is designed to provide enrichment opportunities to students in Mathematics and Sciences to develop skills and capabilities around Radioactive Decay, Enhanced Problem Solving and Cryptography at levels beyond secondary education. During the year, a group of Year 9 students competed against a team of La Trobe University postgraduate students in advanced problem solving – and won!

Paddling to Victory With over 40 Ivanhoe Grammar School paddlers back on the water after a four year wait, the team is celebrating a ‘Best School Team’ win at the Victorian Schools’ Championships. A great mix of Senior and Junior paddlers will now continue to improve as the team heads to the Australian Schools Kayaking Championships to be held in Eildon in January 2024.

Karate Sisters NEAS 25 Year Quality Commitment The School is proud to announce it has completed 25 years of continuous Quality Endorsement with NEAS, a global leader in Quality Assurance for English Language Teaching. The School’s own NEAS Accredited program offers intensive English Language teaching at Ridgeway Campus. This internationally recognised endorsement is testament to the quality of teaching staff and the tailored, onsite, intensive English program that overseas students experience in the Ivanhoe International Academy.

During the Term 3 holidays, Buckley House sisters Ella and Emily Truong represented Australia in the 10th Shitoryu Karatedo International Championships in Jakarta. More than 1,200 athletes from 60 countries competed at the event. Unfortunately, Emily lost in the first round (to a girl who eventually came second in the event), while Ella, who carried the flag for the Australian team in the opening ceremony, was placed equal 3rd in her 10-11 year-old age group!

Ivanhoe Edge Ivanhoe Edge, an innovative initiative for students to enhance their skills and pursue personal goals in performing arts and sports, commenced in October.

The program aims to nurture the undiscovered potential of students from Years 5-12 and is available for all students, not just elite performers. Tailored coaching in basketball, football, swimming, tennis and water polo is currently offered, and in 2024 cricket, dance, drama, netball, personalised fitness, soccer and volleyball will also be available. While the immediate beneficiaries are those participating in the program, it is hoped that Ivanhoe Edge will cast its beneficial influence on the broader academic and co-curricular initiatives.

Aquatic and Wellness Centre Under Way! A special groundbreaking ceremony was held in September to mark the beginning of the construction of the new Aquatic and Wellness Centre at Plenty Campus.

This state-of-the-art complex will feature two pools, change facilities, multipurpose rooms, and a gymnasium. It will also include outdoor sports facilities comprising nine tennis courts, an artificial hockey pitch and a new turf soccer pitch.

Attended by students and staff, Principal Gerard Foley, Deputy Principal/Head of Plenty Campus Fiona Devlin and Deputy Principal/Head of Ridgeway Campus Tom Rickards turned the first sod. The grand opening of this complex is scheduled to take place in April 2025.

Reconciliation Resolution The School’s commitment to reconciliation continues and discussions with a distinguished First Nations artist to incorporate their work into campus signage is ongoing. The School is also collaborating with Aunty Zeta Thomson to establish a First Nations naming scheme for the new Aquatics and Wellness Centre at Plenty Campus.

Two new First Nations students are to be welcomed in 2024 to Year 7 as part of the First Nations Scholarship program, and will reside at the Lady Gladys Nicholls Hostel alongside our other students, fostering a sense of community and unity.

International Graduate Students Luncheon During their last week of schooling In October, the OIGA hosted the School’s international students, together with their families and staff, at the Graduate and Family Luncheon. It takes great character to relocate to another country in one’s teenage years without knowing anyone, to learn a new language and stay with host families, all while studying at a totally new school. We are very proud of the Class of 2023 international students and their contribution to the School.

DEVELOPMENT Development 2023 What is Development? The School’s Development Office has the purpose of acting as a conduit to our wider school family of parents, past parents, alumni and friends.

It is the central point for our alumni programs and the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association, as well as being the fundraising arm of the School, conducting an Annual Appeal and other philanthropic activities.

Appeals and Bequests

Our Annual Appeal this year, ’Time to Dream,’ commenced with a dinner for known benefactors who have pledged a considerable sum to underwrite our First Nations Scholarship program. This will assist in enabling up to six indigenous students to attend Ivanhoe Grammar School. Our thanks go to Andrew and Cara Taylor who, together with staff member Paul Briggs, contributed to a successful evening of knowledge sharing and fundraising.

The appeal itself attracted new donors and support was well received for our Scholarship, Building and Library funds.

Our named scholarships such as the Evelyn and Sydney Buckley Memorial Scholarship, the OIGA Centenary Scholarship and Slater/Graham Memorial Scholarship, were also generously supported.

Our bequest program was enriched with two new members joining The Fidelis Society this year. Bequests have contributed immensely to the welfare of students over the years, most recently towards the scholarship fund.

Proposed Developments 2024

With new projects to come including the Aquatic and Wellness Centre at Plenty Campus, new and improved facilities at Chelsworth Park and the proposed Fraser Senior Years Centre at the Ivanhoe Campus, many philanthropic ways of supporting the School will be available. Naming rights will be offered in a variety of areas including buildings, rooms and recreational areas creating

opportunities to recognise someone or an entity that has made a significant contribution to the life of the School.

Archives

Archives are essential in preserving and maintaining the heritage of the School.

Our archivist, Tim Swain (’72) is currently working on removing unwanted material in preparation for the digitising of our most important documents and artifacts.

As can be imagined, this is an enormous task and great support from many sections of the School will be required if this is to be achieved.

Ridgeway Club Luncheon In Remembrance – Syd Simpson

Former student, Choir Master and Director of Music, Syd Simpson (’59) passed away in September, just two weeks before his 82nd birthday. His funeral service was held at St John’s Anglican Church in Heidelberg where he had been the organist for 36 years, from 1987 up to the time of his passing.

Syd attended Ivanhoe Grammar School from 1954-59. After school, he studied accountancy part-time and worked with Vacuum Oil. However, music was the soundtrack of his life and when the opportunity came to return to the School, Syd took it with both hands.

Syd was appointed the School’s first Director of Music in 1966. When he left in 1978 after 13 years, Syd had almost single handedly laid the foundations for a strong music school. He guided the first musical steps of hundreds of pupils who sought inspiration in and from music including Nick Aitken (’72) (Wilbur Wilde) who delivered one of the eulogies at Syd’s funeral. Nick reminisced about the influence and direction that Syd offered which in turn motivated Nick to follow his musical dream.

The quality of the orchestras and choirs that Syd developed over his years stand as a true testimonial of his expertise, organisation and dedication. Musician, teacher and mentor, Syd was held in the highest esteem by his colleaques and students.

Syd was also Choir Master at St James, Ivanhoe 1963-67 – the original home of Ivanhoe Grammar School. His surviving siblings include sister Jill and brother Robert Simpson (’66).

Ridgeway Club has provided great support to the School for over 30 years. In October, John Ellis (’64), wife Ann and daughter Ruth hosted a lunch for members at their magnificent Hanging Rock Winery in the Macedon Ranges.

John released a new Pinot Gris to celebrate the occasion and guests enjoyed the sculpture exhibition from local artists.
