TERM 4 2022

FROM

• Organising the Welcome Pack to Year 12 students as their introduction to the OIGA.

• Funding for two Cambodian students to attend University in Phnom Penh. The OIGA has also recently announced Round Square bursaries in the name of former Principal Rod Fraser to assist four students to travel to Cambodia in 2023.

How grateful we are that our programs are back and running after two years of relative inactivity, particularly with regard to our reunions. For those who missed their get-togethers in 2020 and 2021, a combined celebration was held in October and turned out to be one of the highlight events of the year!

The Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association has supported and been involved in numerous activities throughout the year. This has included:

• Two scholarships; The Evelyn and Sydney Buckley Memorial Scholarship and the OIGA Centenary Scholarship. Both assist students who could not otherwise enjoy an Ivanhoe education.

• The Brown and White quarterly newsletter which is an important means to keep alumni and supporters in touch with people and events related to the School.

• The Old Ivanhoe Law Society which continues to be a great resource for those students wishing to pursue a legal career.

• Maintaining a presence on Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram. This has proven to be a major tool in staying connected with alumni and continues to grow month by month.

• The OIGA website (oldivanhoe.com) which all alumni are encouraged to use as an opportunity to connect and support fellow alumni through the Business Directory and Careers pages.

I am stepping down at the end of this year as President of the OIGA but can state wholeheartedly that it has been a most rewarding experience. I decided some time ago to give something back to Ivanhoe Grammar School, a place that gave so much to me and to my girls, Tayla (‘19) and Zali (‘21). I have loved working alongside my OIGA Council members and school staff, and will remain on the committee.

I am excited to announce the next President of the OIGA is Michael Bacskos (‘09). Michael, who has been Treasurer for four years, is the first Plenty Campus student to be President of the OIGA and will become one of our youngest Presidents. Michael was School Captain in 2009 and joined the council the year after he left school. He has also been involved with the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians Football Club for many years as a player and committee member. I wish Michael every success in the role and look forward to working alongside him in the years to come.

On behalf of the OIGA, we wish the Class of 2022 every success and welcome you all to the Association as our newest Life Members. The past few years have been a real diversion from our normal way of life, but I know you will take the attributes of a true Ivanhoe Learner with you and forge your own way with confidence into the future. Our Christmas and New Year wishes to you all.

Steph Louey - from classroom to boardroom

Despite a demanding career, Ivanhoe Grammar School was delighted when earlier this year, Stephanie Louey (’08) accepted an invitation to join the Board of Governors.

Although she is the youngest board member, Steph brings a unique insight to the group both from her appointment as the first female School Captain and her subsequent national and international working experience. With her global communications expertise, we thought it appropriate to highlight her journey from The Ridgeway Campus to the Boardroom.

Steph commenced at Ivanhoe Grammar School in 2003 (Year 7). Her first year at The Ridgeway Campus also happened to coincide with the first intake of girls. Steph felt the School was extremely accommodating as it made the transition from an all-boys institution to a co-ed school.

Despite not considering herself a natural leader, clearly the School thought otherwise. Steph was the first female School Captain in the 93 years of the Ridgeway Campus. Not surprisingly, this brought considerable expectations from staff, parents and students, and of course from herself. However, Steph acknowledged the tremendous support from the entire Ivanhoe Grammar School community, saying that it was a great honour to be part of the School’s history.

Despite her additional responsibilities, Steph achieved a Triple Blue in Sport (eventually a member of the School’s Athletic Team of the Century), received colours in Music, Cadets and Round Square, and still managed to obtain outstanding VCE results.

She completed Communications (PR) and Media Studies at Monash University, and later her Master’s Degree in Communications at RMIT. This provided the opportunity to do a 6-week study program on Business Globalisation at the University of Maryland (USA), which helped confirm her interest in focussing on Communications, just one of the core skills she brings to the Board.

After university, Steph kicked off her Communications career at NAB where she spent the next six years in various roles within the Corporate Communications division. Steph always had a desire to live and work overseas, so she and partner (now husband) Ryan Buckley (’06), elected to take a career break from NAB and move to New York.

In such a hugely competitive market, finding sponsors, obtaining work visas and proving to be a better option than a local candidate was extremely difficult. However, both Steph and Ryan achieved all that, and Steph’s drive to succeed, clearly evident at Ivanhoe Grammar School, stood her in good stead.

While living in The Big Apple, Steph honed her communications skills with Deloitte Global and later WeWork during their highly anticipated IPO and

subsequent battle to remain solvent. Steph described her time there as both enormously challenging but an incredible learning experience.

Her last year in New York coincided with the start of COVID, and from April 2020, Steph and Ryan were unable to leave their studio apartment for nearly three months. They moved back home to Melbourne at the end of that year and remarkably Steph was offered her current role at ANZ just as she was about to board her flight back to Australia. What a great way to say goodbye to life in the US and start a new chapter in Melbourne.

Steph spent six years on the OIGA Council, the final two as Vice President, before leaving for New York. She has maintained strong connections with the School even while overseas, and it was probably a surprise only to her that having settled back into Melbourne, the invitation to join the Board came.

Steph has noted the special working relationship that the Board members have with each other, but most importantly, their passion for the School. With people like Steph on the Board, the School is in very good hands!

The School Song

As soon as the first line is sung – “We are proud to be members of Ivanhoe School…”, the remainder of the verse seems to come back. Most Ivanhoe Grammar School students enrolled after 1949 would almost instantly recognise the glorious, soaring music which accompanies the words and chorus of the School Song. Many alumni can still recite it, years after leaving the School. It is unknown what prompted its creation, but up until 1949, it was considered a matter of some regret that there was no School Song in which everyone could join in on important occasions. Particularly when the less musical but more robust War Cry might have been out of place!

The School Song made its first public appearance at the Senior House Play night during the last week of Term 2, 1949, when it was sung by the School Choir. So, who were the two people responsible for writing this song which has become well known to Ivanhoe Grammar School students for over 70 years?

Alan Graham

It is no wonder that Alan Graham wrote the words to the School Song as his life was remarkably interwoven with that of Ivanhoe Grammar School. When he passed away in 1979, he had been involved with the School for 56 of its 65-year history to that time.

Born in the year of the School’s foundation, he was educated under the headmastership of Sydney Buckley as a pupil from 1923 to 1932. As a student, he created a record which will not be broken in that he was School Dux from 1930-1932. In his final year, he was also a Prefect, Captain of the First XI and winner of the Rhodes Award.

He won a senior scholarship to the University of Melbourne where he completed an honours degree in English, History and Latin. He entered Journalism but when war broke out in 1939, he enlisted in the AIF and served four years in England and the Middle East, including Tobruk. Returning to Australia in 1943, he went on to serve in New Guinea and the Borneo campaigns.

Following his demobilisation, he offered himself to Sydney Buckley as a teacher and in 1946, commenced a career of 33 years of unbroken service from 19461979. He made his great contribution to the lives of boys as a schoolmaster, primarily during the headmastership of Victor Brown.

During this time, Alan was Director of Studies and taught Greek History which had almost cult status. He was also School Sportsmaster, AGSV Secretary for 20 years, and as cricket coach, guided three teams to premierships.

Alan was a man of integrity, intelligence, generosity and openness, and his passion for the School is unmistakable from the words he put to John Marshall’s music. Married to Norma, he had three children; two daughters and a son Warwick, who was Captain of the School in 1970.

John Marshall

John Marshall was organist and choir master at St James Anglican Church Ivanhoe where he led boys from Ivanhoe Grammar School in the choir, and also gave private piano lessons. This experience led him to believe that teaching was his vocation and in 1939 he joined the School staff. From then

until his untimely death in 1972 at the age of 58, Ivanhoe Grammar School was his life.

Following military service during WWII, John returned to the School in 1946 and became resident master-in-charge at the Junior Dormitory. Many boys were introduced to light and classical music through the record recitals he often gave in the dormitories as the students were preparing for bed.

Not many boys or adults had the good fortune to hear John perform on the concert platform, but those who were privileged to hear his recital of George Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ in the School Hall were unable to forget it.

John was a magnificent pianist and organist. On several occasions, offers were made to him to accept the post of organist and choir master at several of the great cathedrals of England, but he turned them down. He believed his vocation was in the classroom.

Apart from the School and its boys, John’s great loves were music, films and theatre. He travelled far and wide around Melbourne to attend films, operas, ballet and live theatre.

Following his passing, a ‘Jamestown by Rogers’ electronic organ, the outcome of a generous gift from

John’s family together with donations from the Parents Association and Ladies Association, was dedicated at a service at Buckley Hall in 1974. Later, the John Marshall Memorial Organ was transferred to the School Chapel so that whenever there was a service in the Chapel, his music lived on.

It is not clear whether toward the end of Sydney Buckley’s time as Headmaster that John was commissioned to write the music to a School Song, or whether he took it upon himself, together with Alan, to do so.

Perhaps in those difficult post-war years when reuniting the two factions (Ivanhoe and Yea), the tragic loss of many past students and the financial constraints faced by the School, the words and music were a deliberate effort to help rebuild the School spirit.

In any event, it most certainly did and 73 years after its first rendition, it remains an inspiring and moving piece of music associated with the School.

Development Office

Whilst the emphasis on fundraising was tempered this year, our regular donors still made a wonderful contribution. To acknowledge their support, Principal, Gerard Foley, hosted a cocktail event in October.

The School received another bequest this term for the Scholarship Fund from the Estate of Charles Gahan (’43) who was a member of our Fidelis Society.

We thank the many parents who volunteer generously to support school projects and causes. This year, Friends of The Ridgeway Campus completed their pledge which resulted in naming Show Court 3 in the Sports and Aquatic Centre. The Friends of Ridgeway Theatre established three new academic Theatre Prizes for Years 7, 8 and 10. They combined with Friends of Plenty Parents Association to create the Theatre Prize for Year 9.

We look forward to the continued support of the School community next year.

The Little Mess Beer Garden in Brunswick was the setting for over 40 alumni from Plenty Campus to celebrate their fiveyear reunion.

COVID Catch Up – Friday 7 October 2022, The Ridge

In one of the biggest functions in recent years, over 180 alumni who had their reunions cancelled as a result of the pandemic in the past two years, gathered together to finally celebrate their milestone events. This included the classes of 1980 and 1981 (40 years), 1990 and 1991 (30 years), 2000 and 2001 (20 years), 2010 and 2011 (10 years) and 2015 and 2016 (5 years) from both campuses.

While the COVID Catchup was a long, overdue evening, it was a huge success and clearly enjoyed by all who attended. A highlight was OIGA President Wayne

leading a rousing rendition of the School Song.

10 THE BROWN AND WHITE REUNIONS

Buckley Boys/Brown Era Luncheon, Wednesday 30 November 2022

The incoming President of the Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association Michael Bacskos (‘09) and Principal Gerard Foley hosted an enthusiastic and passionate group of some 110 alumni and partners at Buckley Hall. Cancelled for the past two years, this event commenced at the School Chapel after which a delicious lunch in Buckley Hall took place during which Principal Gerard Foley bought the guests up to date on all school matters. This was followed by a tour of the new Sports and Aquatic Centre for those who had not yet seen it first hand.

One of the features of this luncheon is to recognise the School’s Living Treasures and Life Members. We were delighted to finally acknowledge this elite group of alumni, some of whom would have otherwise received this acknowledgement in 2020 and 2021. Living Treasure plaques (90 years) were presented to Gregor McGregor (’47) and Michael Hellstrom (‘50). Ken Snodgrass (‘49), also a Living Legend, was unfortunately unable to attend to receive his plaque. A very special day of celebration for all alumni in attendance.

TERM 4 2022 11
REUNIONS

Who knew what you could achieve in just one year? In June 2021, OIGA Councillor Heath Gilham (’13), cofounded a not-for-profit companyCreative Bytes - with his friend Stewart McMillan. Since then, Heath (pictured above left with Stewart) has worked extremely hard and his business is now reaping the rewards.

Creative Bytes teaches digital literacy skills around Victoria in a professional, creative and engaging environment, and empowers organisations to unlock their creativity through technology. Their Tech Consultancy Program provides much needed advice and support to not-for-profit organisations to grow their impact.

Some of the highlights of the past year include grant funding for their Warrnambool Coding Program in November, a Google grant worth over 150k to advertise their program, and a Public Transport Victoria agreement to support disadvantaged students attending their workshops. Well done, Heath.

Still Going Strong

John Dermer (’67) recently celebrated his 55th year as an Australian potter and his 45th annual November exhibition at his studio in Yackandandah. John has won numerous national and international awards and was commissioned to provide works for the Cabinet Room and Prime Minister’s suite in the new Parliament House in 1988. He is also a respected photographer and a member of the School’s Galley of Achievement.

Among the professional and age-group triathletes from around the world who competed in the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii 2022 was our own Trevor Cotsworth (’07) who placed 179th out of 346 in the Men’s 30-34 division. This is an astonishing achievement, particularly as he only competed in his first ironman in June 2021!

The legendary Hawaiian 226km event comprises a swim (3.8kms), cycle (180 kms) and a full marathon (42.2 kms) and is regarded as one of the most prestigious sporting events to win in the world. For many athletes, just finishing the race is the highlight of their career. Trevor finished the event in 10h, 12m and said it “was an experience I will never forget! I couldn’t be happier with how the day went and I’m super proud of my result.” What a fantastic effort indeed.

Ruby Brings Shakespeare to School

Ruby Maishman (’15) has dreamed of a career in acting since age 14, and if her recent credits are any indication, her dreams are very much coming to life!

Following her training at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 2019, Ruby received the Best Female Actor award at the WA Screen Academy Gala in 2019 for her appearance in the short film Hy_Brain. She made her Sydney Theatre debut in 2020 and performed at the Kings Cross Theatre in 2021 in Dead Skin

Ruby is now performing with The Players - Bell Shakespeare, a touring ensemble which brings Shakespeare to life in schools across Australia. The Players perform multiple roles in 50-minute performances, and Year 7 Plenty Campus students recently witnessed Ruby in various characters from Romeo and Juliet, Henry V, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hamlet.

Ruby credits teacher and Director of Performance, Shaun Murphy, as helping her to find her passion. As well as remembering her time at Ivanhoe Grammar School with great fondness, she advised those students who aspire to an acting career to ‘go to the theatre; see plays, meet actors and find mentors.’ We wish Ruby continued success in her acting career in the years ahead.

Education Innovator

Dr Nathaniel Swain (‘07) was recently presented with the Mona Tobias Award by Learning Difficulties Australia, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Australian education of people with learning difficulties. The award is given in memory of Mona Tobias who was a pioneer in teaching socially disadvantaged people. Nathaniel is also the founder of Think Forward Educators, and was recently highlighted in Good Weekend’s ’52 News Makers 2022’ for his key role in driving a shift in primary years teaching.

Water Polo Success

After a two-year absence, Water Polo returned in 2022 and the players were able to use the School’s new Sports and Aquatic Centre to train and compete. Whilst water polo is not an AGSV sport, it is one of the School’s fastest growing co-curricular programs. In an Ivanhoe Grammar School first, both the Intermediate Boys’ Water Polo team (Years 9 & 10) and Open Boys’ Water Polo team (Years 11 & 12) secured premierships, which demonstrated the boys’ outstanding dedication to their training and hunger to win.

14 THE BROWN AND WHITE AROUND THE SCHOOL

The Pizzey Family Athletics Captains Cup

John Pizzey (’63) and Life Governor of the School generously donated the Athletics Championship Cup which was awarded to his father in 1925, back to the School. It is now known as the Pizzey Family Athletic Captains Cup and was presented to our 2022 Athletics Captains Thomas Diamond and Ruby Shannon (below) at the recent Final Year 12 Awards Assembly. The Cup has been engraved with the names of other members of the Pizzey clan including George (’25), Bill (’30), John Marshall (’37), Allan (’57) and John Martin (’90). All were great athletes in their time.

The Pizzey name is synonymous with Ivanhoe Grammar School, with countless sporting and academic achievements reflected on honour boards around the School. With the support of the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians Association, Captains of the boys and girls athletics teams will have their names engraved on the cup each year which will be prominently displayed in the Bill Lyon Gallery in the Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Class of 2022 Valedictory Dinners

The Class of 2022 celebrated the end of their schooling at their respective campus-based Valedictory Dinners, and were recognised for their resilience and grit, courage and compassion.

Plenty Campus Year 12s enjoyed an evening at Leonda By The Yarra during which School Captains Aroha Gupta and Samuel Bevacqua spoke about the lessons they learnt from their final year at school and the importance of friends. The Ridgeway Campus Valedictory Dinner was held at Melbourne Town Hall. School Captains Ruby Grinter and Luke Malara talked about the special moments that made up their time at the School, and the unique experiences of their last years.

Their support and respect towards one another were recognised by Principal Gerard Foley who thanked the Class of 2022 for leaving a legacy of acceptance and change for others to follow.

Inaugural Quadruple Colours

From the very early days of the School’s existence, Colours (full and half) have been awarded to those students who have achieved personal excellence or made significant contributions in sport and for co-curricular activities. This year, Plenty Campus students Sam Bevacqua (Year 12) and Avriel Das (Year 11) received the inaugural Quadruple Cocurricular Colours for their outstanding achievements in Service, Music, Debating, Theatre and Cadets. Sam is School Captain and Avriel has been appointed as School Captain in 2023. Congratulations to both students.

International Luncheon

In their final week of school, the OIGA hosted a luncheon for our international students and their parents. It was a superb gathering to mark the end of these students’ time at Ivanhoe Grammar School and thank the parents for entrusting the School with the education of their children, although some parents had not seen their children for three years! A truly memorable event.

100th AGSV Athletics Championships

On Saturday 3 September, the nine member schools of the AGSV were finally able to acknowledge the 100th Anniversary of the 1920 AGSV Athletics Championships, which was postponed for two years due to COVID lockdowns. The 2022 Carnival at Lakeside Stadium was held in ideal conditions and while both the Boys’ and Girls’ teams led their respective competitions for most of the day, they couldn’t quite maintain their competition leads and finished second overall. It was a superb day of competition, with the students and staff of the School providing great support to all athletes.

Swim Program at SAAC

Swimming lessons are now available to the general public at the School’s Sports & Aquatic Centre. An accredited swim program for primary school children (4+) has already commenced, with classes for teenagers and adults opening soon. There is also a school holiday program. TERM 4 2022 15 AROUND THE SCHOOL

The Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association was greatly saddened to learn of the death of Klaus Ducker (’50) who passed away in September, a week before his 89th birthday.

Klaus left Germany as a refugee and arrived at the age of eight in Australia in 1941. He attended Ivanhoe Grammar School from 19421946, including time spent at Yea when the School was occupied by the Australian Army.

On completion of secondary school, Klaus graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon in 1955, and enjoyed a highly distinguished army career. As a Lieutenant with the Royal Australian Regiment in Malaya, he was awarded the Military Cross in November 1958 for acts of exemplary gallantry while on ambush patrols. He also served as a Company Commander in Borneo and Vietnam, where he was Mentioned in Despatches. Following his retirement from the army, Klaus enjoyed an equally illustrious career as a Committee Secretary in the Senate.

Klaus played a key role in Ivanhoe Grammar School’s successful application for a Cadet Unit in 1960 and subsequently endowed the LT Colonel K H Ducker Progress Award in 1993. He and wife Judith maintained close links to the School throughout his life and Klaus was the OIGAs Canberra Coordinator for many years.

Dr

Edgar

John Hamilton North, OAM

Dr John North (’44) who passed away in May, left a magnificent legacy, and his generosity of spirit and commitment to his community bears telling in some detail.

Born on Valentine’s Day in 1927, John attended Ivanhoe Grammar School from 1939-44 as a boarder, and at Yea from 1942-43 when it was seconded by the Australian Army. His brothers Sandy (’42) and Peter (’51) also attended the School.

Following service during WWII with the RAAF, John enrolled in medicine in 1947. Following graduation, John worked in general practice in Thomastown, where 200+ midwifery deliveries a year and up to 60–70 daily consultations left no time for much else!

In 1965, he moved to Scottsdale in Tasmania after purchasing a two-person practice. He instigated essential improvements to health records management which led to the forerunner of the RACGP Health Record which has since been used by most health practices in Australia.

John returned to Melbourne in 1977 and over the next 25 years became involved with an extensive range of medical activities, leading to major developments across the entire health sector throughout the country. In 1999, John received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for Service to Medicine.

Despite his enormous commitment to medical activities, John retained a close link to the School. He was a generous and ongoing benefactor. He regularly attended both Buckley Boys Reunions and Boarders Reunions well into his nineties. He was also a Life Member of the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association. His contribution to his School, his country and particularly his chosen field of medicine/health, was nothing short of extraordinary.
