THE BROWN AND WHITE

Like many organisations, Ivanhoe Grammar School has been responding as necessary to meet the challenge of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in line with the guidelines and restrictions imposed by Federal and State health authorities. The School has announced the cancellation of large events until the end of the Term 1 break (13 April) and on 16 March the decision was made to close the School from Friday 20 March 2020, with student learning to be delivered through our online platform. Such decisions are difficult, but they are made in the interest of the ongoing health and wellbeing of our School community, which is of paramount concern. We thank you for your support and understanding during these challenging times.

Outstanding academic results The 2019 results from our VCE and IB students were very strong. 41% of our Year 12 students finished in the top 10% of the state and 69% in the top 20% of the state. The median ATAR score of our students was 87.9. More importantly, as an open-entry school, I truly believe that we give every child the opportunity to be the best student they can be and achieve the best possible result. Our exceptional teachers and our excellent learning environment raise the achievable outcomes for all students, not just the ‘A-graders’.

Notwithstanding the current global situation, I have been delighted in the continued interest shown by prospective parents in pursuing an Ivanhoe education for their children. Our reputation in the community is very strong, which is reflected in the enquiries being received on all campuses. We have been reminding our alumni community that Life Membership of the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians Association (OIGA) does afford some enrolment priority for their children and grandchildren, as long as the application is received before the child’s 5th birthday. We are seeing record enrolment enquiries from alumni, which bodes well for the future of our School.

Sustainable development Our largest current building development project is the Sports Centre at The Ridgeway Campus. Underpinning all our planned works is a drive towards sustainability targets, including water reticulation, solar power and recycling. We are seeking to implement good energy practices across all aspects of school life and ultimately to drive behavioural change.

Celebrating together 2020 is proving to be one of the most challenging in the history of Ivanhoe Grammar School. We know that many in our community are experiencing difficulties at the moment and our thoughts are with you. Hopefully, at some stage during the year, we take time to reflect on some significant school milestones. The centenary of both the OIGA and the Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria (AGSV) as well as the 30th Anniversary of the Plenty Campus are worth celebrating and we anticipate there will be opportunities for you to join us at various events later in the year. BUILDING CHARACTER

Lest We Forget In the Ivanarian of 1932 our founder, the Reverend Sydney Buckley, wrote: ‘We have aimed, and shall aim, at developing character, character informed and capable, so that when boys, grown to manhood, come to take their part in the social world they will make their influence felt, and felt for good.’ Thankfully this ethos still applies in our co-educational community of today. With ANZAC Day approaching it is timely to remember the contribution that Ivanhoe Grammar School, a small village school as it was at the time, made to the war effort during those turbulent years of 1939-1945.

At the beginning of the Second World War in 1939, the School had a total enrolment of 1300 boys. By war’s end in 1945, 904 Ivanarians had enlisted in the Australian Defence Forces and 71 had made the supreme sacrifice, fulfilling Buckley’s hope that his students were prepared to give service far beyond their school years.

World War, but in ensuing conflicts. Members of our Cadet Unit mount the traditional Catafalque Guard, the Prefects read the names of those who gave their lives and the Evening Hymn is played to accompany the Last Post. It is one of the most moving and respectful occasions on the School’s calendar.

Ivanhoe Grammar School has honoured our Fallen for many years with four memorial services being conducted across the School on a day as close as possible to ANZAC Day. As well as our students, relatives of those who gave their lives attend as do many of those who served, not only in the Second

While the services will not proceed in 2020, if you would like to attend our ANZAC Day service in the future, please contact Geoff Brown via email on geoff.brown@ivanhoe.com.au so that you may receive a personal invitation.

REUNIONS AND EVENTS

Class of 1970 – 50 Year Reunion Reunions at Ivanhoe Grammar School become all the more relevant when you consider that they give the opportunity for past students to return to a place where many spent at least one third of their very early lives. Many alumni look to re-live, in memory at least, those wonderful times.

Re-living wonderful times Our 50 Year Reunion of the Class of 1970 was held in early March and for three of the attendees, it was their first time back at school since leaving in late 1970. After being welcomed by Geoff Brown (’62), many of our guests took the opportunity of a prelunch tour of The Ridgeway Campus. Funny how much things have changed in the intervening period; in 1970 there was no Middle Years Centre, no Chapel, no Round Square Courtyard nor Ridge Café. Yet, many aspects of school-life do not appear to have changed at all, such as the friendly smiles and organised calm of a well-functioning campus.

THE BROWN AND WHITE

London Reunion Over a pleasant lunch in the Boardroom in School House, the group was brought up to date on school matters by Tom Rickards, Deputy Principal/Head of The Ridgeway Campus. Tom was also kind enough to participate in a robust question and answer session, in which the Class of 1970 were energetic participants.

Travelling from across the country A big thank you to all those who came to the reunion, and especially those who travelled from interstate for the occasion. Martin Pickrell from Sydney, School Captain Warwick Graham from Adelaide, Trevor Dyson from Tura Beach and Ian Smith from Hobart all made a big effort to be back at Ivanhoe Grammar School with their cohort for this wonderful occasion.

A Round Square meeting required School Principal, Gerard Foley, to travel to London in January. Gerard took the opportunity to meet past students who currently call London home, thereby launching the 2020 OIGA Centenary Reunion program. Though in the depths of winter, the atmosphere in Gillray’s Steakhouse and Bar was warm and inviting. Many of our UK-based alumni were re-connecting with the School for the first time in years, though Frank Prenesti (’82) and Rohan Burdett (’84) are regulars at our London gatherings.

Re-connecting far from home Edward Cole (’91) flew into Heathrow that afternoon and went straight to the reunion. It was also great to see Lauren Chan (’07), Angela Yang (’09), Julia Goddard (’09) and Brana Vukmirovic (’11) representing our female alumni. Everyone must have enjoyed the catch up because Gerard reported retiring very late that evening!

Due to the impact on the School’s calendar of the ongoing Coronavirus situation, please contact geoff.brown@ivanhoe.com.au for information about forthcoming events.

REUNIONS AND EVENTS

Centenary Celebration

New York Reunion Heading to the United States for an international conference gave Gerard Foley the opportunity to spend a few days in New York. Along with Leyton Miles, Business Manager at Ivanhoe Grammar School, Gerard hosted a drinks evening in February for alumni based in New York and elsewhere in the United States.

An opportunity to connect with other alumni Largely thanks to our social media reach, ten past students attended for what proved to be a great catch up for all concerned. Our first female School Captain of The Ridgeway Campus, Steph Louey (’08), attended with her fiancée Ryan Buckley (’06). Other

School Captains at the reunion were Will Twinn (’03) and Jack Pead (’04). Tim Lang (’90) and wife Kerry travelled from Washington DC and Till Maurer (’76), who attended our London Reunion in 2013, made it a double! Our thanks go to all those who made the effort to attend.

We are hopeful that we can hold a major alumni event to celebrate the Centenary of the OIGA later this year. More details will be provided in due course. In the meantime, please follow us on Facebook, Instagram and via the OIGA website to keep updated on all OIGA activities.

Stay in touch It is also worth reminding alumni to stay in touch when residing overseas. We can keep you informed of international gatherings and give you the opportunity to connect with other alumni in the same locality.

Albury Reunion Gerard Foley was accompanied by Geoff Brown (’62), OIGA Executive Officer, to the Albury Reunion in February. Other than David Lester (’59) and Ken Curnow (’50), all those present at the Albury Club that day had been boarders and called the School ‘home’ during their time at Ivanhoe. Always great travellers, our Albury group travelled from far and wide to be there. For Bob Herbert (’67) it was a four hour round trip to meet up with twin brother Alistair (’67) for lunch. Geoff Campbell (’64) travelled for an

hour to join brother Bernard (’62) at the table.

Always great travellers Peter Chaston (’62) and wife Heather are almost locals as is John Adams (’70) and with Don Crosthwaite (’62) and Colin Storey (’66) living close by, they all had time for a pleasant threehour chat about the ‘good old days’. During the lunch, Gerard provided a detailed update on the School which was enjoyed by all. TERM 1 2020

HAVE YOU HEARD?

Still friends after all these years!

Jack Pead (’06)

Nikki Wishart (’17)

These six alumni friends still connect on a regular basis. In the photograph above are (from left) Vik Kiriakidis (‘92), Paul Temelkovski (‘89), Sacho Noveski (‘90), John Kiriakidis (‘90), David Cvetkovski (‘90), and Greg Genis (‘88). They are pictured at a recent motor racing event called the Superloop Adelaide 500.

It is always great to have alumni visit us at School House at The Ridgeway Campus. Jack Pead, School Captain in 2006, has been living in New York where he works for the Australian Consulate and he recently returned to Ivanhoe Grammar School for a meeting with Geoff Brown and an informal School tour hosted by Alumni Coordinator, Mirella Busso-Lee.

Young Alumni Nikki Wishart has just released her second official single ‘Mirror Mirror’ via Spotify.

It is great to hear that some 30 years after they left school, these alumni still look for opportunities to reach, connect and support. Highlights of their past group activities include sharing Best Man duties at each other’s weddings, travelling together for business, and of course the adrenalin rush of V8 motor racing. The strong bond that they formed at Ivanhoe Grammar School has not diminished over time, and we look forward to hearing what the boys get up to on their next outing.

Accompanied by his girlfriend Dani, Jack was impressed with the continuing development of The Ridgeway Campus, and in particular with the Sports Centre project that is underway adjacent to ArtsEdge at Locksley. Jack’s main reason for returning to Australia on this occasion was to re-connect with family and friends over the Christmas period. Jack is also in regular contact with former classmates and other expatriate alumni and he recently attended our New York reunion in February (see page 5 for details). Whenever he is back in Melbourne, Jack likes to catch up with his former kayaking mates from school; in fact immediately following his visit, he was seen heading their way for a planned long lunch!

THE BROWN AND WHITE

More than just a great track, Nikki hopes that ‘Mirror Mirror’ can help to shine a light on looking beyond the mirror, encouraging folks to realise their self-worth and to make friends of their fears. In a recent interview, Nikki expressed her views that songs are interpreted by people in their own way. ‘Everyone will take pieces of their life experiences to draw out the meaning behind a song. That is what makes music special.’ In releasing ‘Mirror Mirror’, Nikki is hoping to reach at least one person who needs reassurance and encouragement. ‘That is why I write music; not only for its therapeutic properties but to allow others to not feel alone.’ We hope that Nikki’s music career really takes off and that she continues to be a great role model for other aspiring alumni. If you are an alumni musician and would like the opportunity to reach, connect and support with other like-minded alumni, please email alumni@ivanhoe.com.au

OIGA Kayakers celebrate the Centenary

Young theatre stars on the rise

In a highlight of his acting career so far, Claude Jabbour (’04) can be seen playing a key role in the six-part ABC drama series ‘Stateless’, which launched in February.

Looking for a unique way to celebrate the Centenary of the OIGA? You would be struggling to beat our Old Ivanhoe Kayakers, who set off on the adventure of a lifetime and paddled the 130 kilometre Franklin River over the summer break.

Congratulations to three alumni stars: Elena Maini (’19), Regan Phillips (’19) and Tim Howard (’19) (pictured above, left to right) who performed at the Arts Centre Melbourne during March as part of the prestigious Top Class series.

Located within the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, the Franklin River flows through beautiful, rugged, mountainous country before joining the Gordon River, ultimately reaching the south west coast of Tasmania.

Top Class is a showcase of the very finest work of VCE students from across Victoria for which there is a stringent selection process. Apart from achieving a perfect score on their performance examination, students face an external panel represented by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) and must achieve an ‘exceptional result’.

‘Stateless’ is a story inspired by true events about the lives of four strangers: a woman escaping a cult, a refugee fleeing with his family, a father trapped in a dead-end job, and a bureaucrat on the verge of a national scandal. The four characters find their lives intertwined in an Australian immigration detention centre. Claude, pictured above, in the role of Farid, appears alongside stars Cate Blanchett and Asher Keddie in the series. ‘Stateless’ has been critically acclaimed and the global rights were recently acquired by Netflix who will broadcast the series outside Australia. Congratulations to Claude on his acting achievements so far – hopefully we will see much more of his work on both big and small screens.

A combination of perfect weather and river height ensured that our intrepid explorers had a stunning five-day adventure, the equal of any wild river activity anywhere in the world. Pictured from left to right on the iconic Rock Island Bend are past parent Bill Hopper, Jack Currie (’11), Scott Weston (’03), staff member David Gibbs, Alan Robinson (’11), Mitch Bodycoat (’04), Alex Hopper (’16) and Joe Robinson (’13). The Old Ivanhoe Kayakers are looking for more participants to join them for future adventures. Contact alumni@ ivanhoe.com.au for more details of how you can take part.

As only 20 Theatre Studies students state-wide are selected for Top Class, this is truly an amazing achievement by Regan, Tim and Elena. To have three Ivanhoe Grammar School students selected for Top Class also speaks volumes for the quality of teaching and direction within our Theatre Studies faculty, so big congratulations to our teaching staff as well.

HAVE YOU HEARD?

Adrian Del Monte (’06)

Jimmy Starbuck (’04) and Burak Ozdemic (’09)

Grace Lusk (’17)

Adrian Del Monte (’06) recently visited Ivanhoe Grammar School and shared some stories about his exploits on the world stage. Based in Milan, Adrian’s media career continues to develop with valuable TV exposure and opportunities to rub shoulders with some of world football’s elite.

Exciting times for Jimmy Starbuck (’04) and his trucking and excavation company Starbuck Excavation when he managed a major earthmoving operation for the Australian Supercross Final at Marvel Stadium held in late 2019.

Grace Lusk (’17) always knew she wanted to work for Disney, so during 2018 when she was browsing the career pages and noticed that the Disney Cultural Exchange Program was open to Australians, she completed the application forms the same night, and the rest, as they say, is history.

During 2019, Adrian hosted the FIFA Best Awards Green Carpet Show in Milan’s renowned Piazza della Scala. A highlight of the night was Adrian’s interview with Lionel Messi, recognised as one of the greatest players ever to grace the football pitch.

Jimmy was certainly hard at it for the whole weekend as he and his operations team, led by fellow alumni Burak Ozdemir (’09), had to bring 650 truckloads of earth into Marvel Stadium for the event, and then take all 650 loads out again at the end of the evening.

It was a family wedding that brought Adrian back to Melbourne in February. Best wishes from the Ivanhoe family to Michael Del Monte (’09) and Alessia on their nuptials. Taking the opportunity to visit his old school, Adrian enjoyed sharing lots of Ivanhoe memories and took a school tour with Alumni Coordinator, Mirella Busso-Lee.

It was a great night for motorsports fans and the first time that this event was held under the roof at Marvel Stadium. The Australian Supercross Final was the largest off-road motorcycle racing and action sports event ever held in Australia, in fact the largest event of this type ever held outside the United States.

Expect to hear more about Adrian over the next few years, whether from his global media platform or when he touches down in Melbourne.

In addition to the global leaders in action sports thrilling the crowd in the main races, there were celebrity races, live music performances and pyrotechnics to keep the crowd entertained. Way to go, Jimmy!

8

THE BROWN AND WHITE

Not that Grace’s entrée to her dream job was simple or straightforward. After a rigorous five stage selection process, she commenced working with the Disney organisation in August 2019. Grace has since enjoyed every moment of her time in the United States. Her favourite memories are the Halloween and Christmas parties and helping young fans to meet their Disney heroes. Seeing the faces of youngsters light up brings great enjoyment to Grace’s work. From here, Grace is determined to live life in the United States to the fullest. She plans to travel to New York, California and Hawaii at the end of her Cultural Exchange Program before returning to Melbourne in late 2020 to finish her Design Degree at Swinburne University of Technology. In the meantime, Grace is living the dream!

FIDELIS USQUE AD MORTEM

Vale Kurt Schuster 8 November 1929 – 21 January 2020 Ivanhoe Grammar School past staff and students would be sad to hear of the passing of former French teacher Kurt Schuster. An esteemed member of our academic staff for 25 years, Kurt retired in 1987. He was a fine teacher, strict in the classroom and a formidable sight in full flight, despite his short stature. The story of how Kurt came to Australia, and ultimately to Ivanhoe, is worthy of retelling. At the end of a gruelling world tour with the Vienna Boys Choir, Kurt was scheduled to sail from Fremantle to Europe on 4 September 1939 when, overnight, the British Government declared war on Germany. All shipping was halted, adults of German descent were interred, and Kurt and his fellow choirboys became stranded in Perth. At the invitation of Archbishop Mannix, Kurt and the other choirboys travelled to Victoria where they attended Parade College in East Melbourne and were billeted with host families in the inner suburbs of Melbourne. Throughout his schooling, Kurt lived with Mrs Rae and her three daughters in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. Subsequently, Kurt married Madeleine, the second of the three daughters.

Following studies at Melbourne University and an initial teaching appointment at Burke Hall (Xavier Preparatory Campus), Kurt commenced his 25-year association with Ivanhoe in 1964, serving as a Sports Master and Year 8 Level Master, as well as teaching French. In 1979, 40 years after setting out on the world tour, Kurt finally had the opportunity to make an emotional return to Austria, where he was reunited with his mother Poldi and sister Trudi. The family reunion almost didn’t happen though, as Kurt arrived several weeks earlier than planned and Poldi had the habit of refusing to open her door unless she knew who was on the other side. Fortunately, Kurt was persistent, and still fit enough, to climb the one hundred stairs up to his mother’s apartment. After Kurt’s second ascent to the apartment, followed by repeated knocking, Poldi eventually opened the door to see that her long-lost son had finally returned. A truly remarkable tale. Our sympathies are extended to his family.

Well done to James Chappel (‘03) and younger sibling Sam (‘08) who performed in the recent Eltham Little Theatre Company production of ‘The Sum of Us’. In a piece of classic sibling ‘one-upmanship’, Sam also directed the production. Congratulations to Travis Tomarchio (‘16) for his success at the Australian National Karate Titles. Travis won his Black Belt Division as well as the Champion of Champions Title. The South Ground and the weather were perfect for the annual Kendall Shield game between Old Ivanhoe Grammarians Cricket Club (OIGCC) and the School First XI. Alumni representatives included Wayne Vanderwert (‘89), Brendan Moncrieff (‘11), Mark Moncrieff (‘06), David Peacock (‘01), Blair Dawson (‘14), Jake Chimenello (‘14), Kyle Langford (‘14), Aaron Lambert (‘91), Ryan Hense (‘96), and Ryan Pearce (‘01) and their efforts helped the OIGCC to win the day. Best wishes to Henry Gibbs (’13) and Jess Foley (’13) on their recent engagement. Congratulations to former Ivanhoe Grammar School Board of Governors member and past parent, Catherine Brown OAM. Catherine, who is the CEO of the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation, was recognised in the Australia Day Honours for service to the community through charitable organisations. FROM THE ARCHIVES

The Centenary of the OIGA Another significant milestone we celebrate this year is the Centenary of the OIGA. The OIGA was founded in February 1920 by alumni, including several first day boys from 1915, to continue their involvement with the School and promote fellowship among fellow Ivanarians. Given that the School only commenced in 1915 with a dozen or so pupils, the subsequent formation of the OIGA seems to have occurred very quickly. By 1930, the OIGA was thriving with more than 100 financial members. The annual subscription was five shillings (or 50c in dollar terms) and under the guidance of Jack Benson as President (pictured above in the classroom with ‘eager’ young students), the first constitution was adopted in 1932.

10

THE BROWN AND WHITE

In 1927 the OIGA made their first request for a seat on the Ivanhoe Grammar School Council, however, the request was denied. It was perceived by the School that it was a decade too soon to grant such a request given that ‘the young men were not mature enough and might give an unbalanced vote’. Undeterred, members of the OIGA threw themselves into social connections with former schoolmates through dances, debates, smoke nights, bridge parties, musical evenings and sport. The annual reunion was usually the best attended event. OIGA sporting teams were also formed for football (1929), tennis (1930) and cricket (1933) to play teams of old boys from other schools. Prior to the Second World War, membership of the OIGA peaked at 148 in 1937.

Developing from these humble beginnings, the OIGA has become an important part of the School family providing many different opportunities for past students to maintain their connections with the School and each other. Today, our mission is to ‘reach, connect and support current and past students.’ Our five associated sporting clubs, comprehensive reunion program and ongoing contribution towards scholarships and grants have been complemented in recent years by the launch of the Old Ivanhoe Law Society and a rapidly expanding social media presence. The OIGA now numbers over 5000 Life Members and we continue to look for new and different ways to stay connected.

AROUND THE SCHOOL

Around the School School Captains Tristan Bell, Ethan Clare, Vaida Mancino and Haleena Nguyen welcomed alumni to the Past Captains Assembly on 31 January as depicted in the above photograph. Our Principal, Gerard Foley, thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity for the current School Captains to meet our oldest living School Captain, Graham Hawke (’44). The Ridgeway Campus Production of The Pirates of Penzance played to packed houses in early March. The stage performances, music, direction, sets and costumes were testimony to the fantastic efforts of Director of Performance, Shaun Murphy, and his whole team.

Sporting achievements The Firsts Boys’ Volleyball Team were Runners-up in the Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria (AGSV) competition. Starting with the goal of re-building, the team improved throughout the season and finished the home and away games on top of the ladder. After winning the semifinal against Yarra Valley, Ivanhoe progressed to the Grand Final versus Trinity. The match was a nail-biting five set match which unfortunately ended in heartbreak for Ivanhoe.

Make Your Mark The First Boys’ Basketball and Tennis Teams also made their respective AGSV Grand Finals. Unfortunately, both teams ended the summer sport season as Runners-up. In the basketball against last year’s premiership-winning team, Marcellin, our boys just came up short in a very close, competitive match. In the Tennis Grand Final, Peninsula proved too strong and ran out convincing winners.

Challenging times Approaching the end of Term 1, our response to the challenge of Coronavirus is continually evolving, with the School closed from Friday 20 March 2020 and student learning being delivered through our online platform, as referred to in ‘From the Principal’ on page 2. Regrettably, many reunions and events such as the OIGA Centenary Friday Night Drinks have been cancelled or postponed, such decisions being made with the ongoing health and wellbeing of our School community being the primary concern.

Alumni and supporters of Ivanhoe Grammar School may be interested in contributing to the ongoing development of Plenty Campus, through the Make Your Mark campaign. Through a donation to the Plenty Campus Building Fund, ‘Make Your Mark’ gives you the opportunity to leave a permanent reminder of your family’s involvement with the School. The options include a named plaque on the steps of The Round or on a pew in our beautiful Chapel. Please consider this support opportunity to ‘Make Your Mark’ during 2020. Please contact peter.swain@ivanhoe.com.au for further information.

ALUMNI HONOURS

Far left: Peter Hood and left: Peter Williams

Peter Hood (’66) Peter John Hood AO was recognised in the Australia Day Honours for his distinguished service to business and commerce at the state, national and international level, and to the resources sector. Peter commenced at Ivanhoe Grammar School in Year 5 in 1959 and completed Year 12 in 1966 as Dux of School. He was an active participant in the sports program, representing the School in swimming, athletics and the First XVIII football team, later playing for the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians Football Club. After school, Peter completed his Bachelor of Engineering (Chem) at the University of Melbourne and later graduated from the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program. Peter began his career at Kwinana Nickel Refinery, where he worked for ten years as a Production Engineer. His career has subsequently included numerous senior management and CEO positions as well as board appointments. Notably, since 2009 he has been a Board Member of the

International Chamber of Commerce Australia. He is also a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers. With his wife Anne-Marie, Peter resides in Western Australia and over the years he has attended several Buckley/Brown reunions and is a regular at our Perth reunions.

Peter Williams (’56) Peter John Williams OAM was recognised for his service to maritime history in the recent Australia Day Honours. Peter had links with the School from a very early age; his father Bill (’28) was an Ivanarian and Peter was christened by the School’s founder, Rev Sydney Buckley. Peter grew up in Alandale Road, Eaglemont and attended Ivanhoe Grammar School during his primary years, before transferring to Wesley College where a family member was on staff. After completing secondary school, Peter attended RMIT and subsequently graduated with a Diploma in both Graphic Design and Advertising.

His working life included many years with Kraft in advertising roles, but Peter’s enduring passion was history, particularly maritime history. In 1970, Peter was a founding member of The Maritime Trust of Australia where he served for five decades, including acting as Secretary and President. He played a vital role in the restoration of HMAS Castlemaine, now a museum located at Gem Pier in Williamstown. Amongst other community involvements, in 1967 Peter was a founding member and later President of the Heidelberg Historical Society and Treasurer of Maritime Museums of Victoria. Peter’s unsurpassed knowledge of maritime matters has led to his authorship of several books on Australian and Victorian maritime history. Peter remains a very active contributor to Ivanhoe Grammar School, through his assistance in setting up the Ivanhoe Grammar School Heritage Trail and frequent donations to our archival collection. Peter still lives in the family home in Eaglemont and regularly returns to School for Anzac Day events and the Buckley/Brown Reunions, where his smile never fails to light up the room.
