Acknowledgment of Country
We would like to acknowledge and show our respect to the traditional custodians of this land, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. We would like to pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging, and in addition to any other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people, for they hold the memories, traditions, culture and hopes of Aboriginal Australia. It is on their land that Ivanhoe Grammar School was built and as we share our knowledge, teaching and learning with the School community, may we also show our respect through the relationships we form and our own connection with this beautiful land around us.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Ivanhoe Grammar School continues to be a thriving community of young people of character learning and innovating together. This year, several exciting initiatives came to fruition alongside some wonderful achievements, many of which are celebrated in the pages of this publication.
A key highlight was the continuation of our journey developing new standards in global and character education. In 2023, we received an honourable mention by an international character accreditation organisation and our Cadet Unit was recognised internationally for exemplifying principles of character; two key steps as we make our way towards becoming the first Australian school to be formerly accredited as a School of Character. In November 2023 we launched our ground-breaking Global Education program, which aims to set a new benchmark for incorporating global citizenship education into the school curriculum. Additionally, recognising the importance of co-curricular activities in the development of character, we launched Ivanhoe Edge in 2023. Ivanhoe Edge is a comprehensive co-curricular extension program offering coaching and development for Ivanhoe students in the fields of sport and art. This year, the experience of an Ivanhoe education was extended to a broader community as we opened our stateof-the-art Sports and Aquatic Centre beyond our students and staff with the launch of Ivanhoe Swim: a fantastic learn-to-swim program and swim club available to the local community. Finally, enhancement of the sporting facilities at Plenty Campus commenced in the latter part of the year with the building of a new pool, soccer, and hockey pitch.
STRATEGIC PLAN
Throughout the course of 2023 the management team and Board of Governors have spent a large amount of energy and critical thought on the development of our next Strategic Plan: Towards 2030. In looking to the future, it was important to pause and reflect on what an Ivanhoe Education sets out to achieve. From its inception, Ivanhoe Grammar School has been built around the key principle of developing young people of character. Our collective commitment to this remains unchanged and is underpinned by a desire to:
» promote passion for learning and engagement.
» grow humanity, empathy, and collaborative intent.
» stimulate curiosity, imagination, and a future orientation.
» develop the skills to become a confident, independent decision-maker able to shape the future.
» build resilience and introduce the joy of ‘failing forward’.
» induct into diverse cultures.
Supporting these principles, the new Ivanhoe Grammar School Strategic Plan continues our commitment to develop young people to have:
» Moral Character – respect, honesty, compassion, gratitude, kindness, and ethics
» Civic Character – understanding our responsibility to others, citizenship, volunteering, and social justice.
» Performance Character – giving of one’s best in all endeavours, perseverance, focused, hardworking, and diligent.
To achieve this, we need to continue to offer a breadth of learning opportunities, which has been the hallmark of an Ivanhoe Education for over one hundred years. A full review of our cocurricular offerings, programs and practices has been undertaken this year as a part of a process of continual improvement. The findings from this review will inform decisions as we continue to enhance the broad aspects of learning across the School.
Key features of the School’s new Strategic Plan include the following.
» Being a futures-focused school where we not only prepare students for the present but also for the future with skills, capabilities, and dispositions to impact and shape the world they are entering after graduation. For students to have the competencies required in mathematics, science and humanities alongside broader learning experiences incorporated in global awareness, innovation, digital proficiency, creativity, and financial literacy.
» Our ‘four campuses, one school’ philosophy will continue to ensure consistency in offerings, programs, and practice as a core Ivanhoe Grammar School principle.
» Digital transformation will be a priority to optimise and enhance learning by integrating technology into all we do, including artificial intelligence, virtual reality, online learning, and analytics.
» Investing in our staff continues to be a critical focus for the School under our new Strategic Plan. As an open entry school, we want to enable the best possible learning environment and outcomes for all our students. We will continue to grow the capacity of our teachers as we firmly believe a key determinant of quality learning is quality teachers. To this end, we will introduce the following.
» The establishment of a new career structure for highly accomplished staff who wish to remain in the classroom and provide on-going coaching and support to their colleagues.
» The formation of the Ivanhoe Institute, which will oversee and be responsible for all professional learning. The primary focus for Ivanhoe Institute will be to lead the continuous improvement of teacher capabilities through the development of a high-quality professional learning program.
LEARNING
Throughout 2023 there has been greater collaboration required of Senior Years (Years 10 to 12) teaching teams across our campuses. This has played a crucial role in transitioning our school culture and mindset towards One School. In 2022 and 2023 academic leaders made significant progress in standardising the curriculum offered in Years 10, 11 and 12 across both Plenty and Ridgeway Campuses. In October 2023, almost every Year 10 and VCE subject had a fully common examination, with the remaining few subjects having only minor differences between the campuses. As we move into the 2024 academic year, all subjects in all year levels have a common booklist, work program, key assessments, and semester examinations.
ACADEMIC EXTENSION
During 2023, the Head of Academic Extension has established a comprehensive, tiered Academic Extension Program across the primary and
secondary years. Year 9 STEM Enrichment, the Year 5 to 9 Maths Extension Program, the Ethics Olympiad, Model UN, Philosophy Conferences, Future Problem Solving, Thriving Minds, Mooting and Tournament of Minds are some examples of events and ongoing programs running during lessons, lunchtimes or after school.
This program will be expanded further in 2024.
CO-CURRICULAR LEARNING
The importance of a broad offering of opportunities for students to learn continues to be the hallmark of an Ivanhoe education. To continue to support the growth in this area, a comprehensive review of Co-curricular Learning across the school was instituted in 2023, with recommendations being progressively rolled out over a two-year period, to enhance the broad aspects of learning across the school.
CAPITAL WORKS
In late 2023, the School commenced the new sports precinct at the Plenty Campus. The project includes a 25-metre pool, a separate learn to swim pool, a weights room, and senior classrooms. The precinct also includes a new synthetic hockey pitch which converts into twelve tennis courts and a grassed soccer pitch.
The School has ambitious capital plans for all campuses over the next few years including:
» Improved facilities at Chelsworth Park to cater for the growing number of students and community groups using the park and the expansion of girl’s sport being played there.
» A Senior Years (Years 10 – 12) Centre at the Ivanhoe Campus to be known as the Fraser Centre, acknowledging the outstanding contribution to the school by former Principal Rod Fraser. The Fraser Centre will be built where the current Benson Gymnasium is located. It will be a multi-levelled building catering for the needs of our senior students.
» The resurfacing of the North Ground to cater for tennis and sports training at the Ivanhoe Campus.
» Much needed shade over the Mini Oval at Buckley House.
» Refurbishment to the Ridge Café to cater for the growth in student numbers.
» A third Terrace at the University Campus complementing our existing facilities for all Year 9 students.
I take this opportunity to thank all members of the Ivanhoe Grammar School Community for their ongoing support.

AN IVANHOE
LEARNER
An Ivanhoe Learner is the embodiment of a young person of character.
It is our priority to integrate the attributes of an Ivanhoe Learner into every aspect of the learning experience. We do this so that whatever students set out to accomplish, both in school and in life, they will do so in accordance with the traits of a young person of character.
From the Early Learning Centre, through to our longest-serving staff, our community of Ivanhoe Learners extends beyond the classroom. Staff, students and families alike are committed to a life of enquiry and learning; from each other and the world around us.
Throughout all experiences at Ivanhoe Grammar School – curricular, co-curricular and community –we strive to embody these characteristics, nurture them in our students and lead by example.
COMMITMENT
Ivanhoe Grammar School is committed to the principles of Australian Democracy which includes the process of elected government, adhering to the rules of law and equal rights for all before the law. In addition, the School believes in freedom of religion, freedom of speech and association and promotes the values of openness and tolerance.
ATTRIBUTES OF AN IVANHOE LEARNER
We have the confidence and tenacity to take responsible risks to extend our capacity, persevere when presented with a challenge, and learn from our mistakes.
We value being original and creative in our thinking; being curious and seeking opportunities to introduce new ideas or ways of doing things.
We develop intellectually, physically and emotionally in a balanced way, enhancing wellbeing.
We value the input of others and seek opportunities for shared effort across a range of methodologies and environments.
We value acquiring and building moral judgement in order to be autonomous and responsible.
We use our own ideas and experiences and those of others to support our own learning and development.
We take on the feelings and perspectives of others and act intuitively to support them.
ENGAGED COMMUNITY
PARENT, STUDENT, TEACHER SATISFACTION
The 2023 school year once again reinforced the status of Ivanhoe Grammar School in the local and wider community. On each of the four campuses, every Open Morning held throughout the year was fully subscribed, with family groups visiting the campuses and enjoying the interaction with both staff and students.
The School’s parent support groups, under the umbrella of the Ivanhoe Parents and Friends Association, were again active in providing ample opportunities for families to connect, whether they were new to the school or had a longer association. The emphasis on ‘friend raising’ was once again a key to the events.
Community engagement through surveys etc was again significant in 2023 and the school was able to gain valuable feedback after Open Mornings, as part of the Year 12 exit strategy and specific campus questionnaires. All the data received from these, and other surveys will be taken into consideration when planning for 2024 and beyond.
In terms of enrolments, the School continues to attract significant numbers across all year levels on all campuses, with waitlists growing at the key points of entry into Foundation and Year 7 at the Plenty Campus, ELC and Year 7 at the Ridgeway Campus and our Year 9 University Campus. Likewise, the School’s scholarship program attracted record numbers for both the Academic Scholarships and General Excellence Scholarships in 2023 for entry into 2024.
Finally, the school once again provided ample opportunities for former students to reconnect through the comprehensive reunion program that ran throughout the year. Events were held both on the school site and external venues and attracted large numbers, eager to reflect on ‘days gone by.’

HIGH QUALITY LEARNING
ACADEMIC LEARNING
CELEBRATING LEARNING
During 2023, Ivanhoe Grammar School has continued to enhance the suite of academic programs offered across the School. Our academic programs are driven by our core purpose of developing young people of character. Each academic program provides academic rigour and develops the skills for future learning success. Our programs foster personal growth through the development of the Ivanhoe Learner attributes: courageous, innovative, balanced, collaborative, ethical, reflective and compassionate.
Our teaching teams collaborate to ensure that the Ivanhoe Curriculum is constantly reviewed, updated and adapted. Our aim is to provide a contemporary One School curriculum with the capacity to respond to emerging technology, student interests and varying student capabilities. Our Junior and Middle Years programs prioritise high-support learning environments and structure in order to establish foundational learning skills. Our Year 9 program, based at University Campus, continues to play a pivotal role in developing students into independent young-adult learners with awareness of their own passions and strengths. Our Senior Years curriculum offers a very broad range of subject choices within VCE and IB. These subject offerings are adapted each year in response to student interests.
During 2023 our students engaged enthusiastically in a wide variety of learning experiences. They created incredible Visual Art Exhibitions, presented energetic Musical Theatre Productions and outstanding Music concerts. They fought vigorous debates, conducted remarkable symposiums and have given their best. Our excursions returned to full gear and our students enjoyed many a day immersed in their learning beyond the boundaries of the school grounds. There is a great deal of success to celebrate in the areas of STEM, Digital Technology, The Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Languages, Literature, Sciences and Mathematics.
COLLABORATIVE PROFESSIONALISM
We know that one teacher can make a positive difference in the life of a student. At Ivanhoe, our teachers work together towards a shared vision of high-quality teaching and continual improvement. Our Heads of Learning Area and Curriculum Leaders guide teaching teams through continuous review, growth and enhancement of our teaching practices. During 2023 our endeavours have included accelerating students’ digital learning capabilities, enhancing our academic culture,
expanding and aligning academic support systems, expanding academic extension programs, further developing inquiry and inter-disciplinary learning and re-imagining Global Education.
ACADEMIC
EXTENSION
During 2023, the Head of Academic Extension has established an impressive number and variety of extension experiences for students across year levels and campuses. Year 9 STEM Enrichment, the Year 5 to 9 Maths Extension Program, the Ethics Olympiad, Model UN, Philosophy Conferences, Future Problem Solving, Thriving Minds, Mooting and Tournament of Minds are some examples of programs running during lessons, lunchtimes or after school.
DIGITAL CAPABILITIES
Recent developments in digital technology have opened up exciting new avenues and modes of learning, including through the use of AI. Both students and teachers have undertaken significant growth in digital capabilities connected to how we learn. We are in a new era of opportunities to learn and create being available anywhere and anytime. Within a range of subjects, importance has been given to the development of student and teacher Digital Literacy (ICT Capabilities). Across many areas of study, learning tasks are designed to teach students to navigate digital sites, select and use the most appropriate digital devices and tools, create and manage digital content, explore, communicate and collaborate whilst safeguarding their data and wellbeing.
IVANHOE INSTITUTE LAUNCHED
2023 brought the launch of The Ivanhoe Institute. The aim of the Institute is to support the professional growth of all staff through the development of highquality professional learning programs. The Director of the institute leads the school’s pedagogical leaders at each Campus in the development and implementation of the school’s coaching program. Via the Institute, the inaugural Ivanhoe Professional Learning Conference was held in August with great success. The theme was “Towards 2030”. Louka Parry (CEO and Founder of the Learning Future) was the keynote presenter. The day also featured over 40 of our own staff delivering professional learning workshops to their peers.
I would like to acknowledge the outstanding work of our teachers. Their dedication, expertise, and passionate support of our students are essential elements of the success of 2023.
Carmel Fry Director of Academic Learning
CO-CURRICULAR LEARNING
At Ivanhoe Grammar School, our unwavering commitment lies in providing a holistic educational experience that nurtures the multifaceted growth of our students. Central to this ethos are the meticulously curated co-curricular programs, deliberately designed to shape the character and capabilities of our young learners. These programs not only serve as avenues for performance development but also as platforms for fostering a sense of community and belonging among our students.
Our extensive array of co-curricular offerings spans various domains, catering to the diverse interests and talents of our student body. From athletics to the arts, each program is crafted to instil values of the Ivanhoe Learner.
Take, for instance, our sports program, developed to enhance the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of our students. With close to 30 sporting options available, ranging from traditional team sports to individual pursuits, we ensure that every student finds a niche where they can engage positively with the challenges which sports provide. The mandatory participation in AGSV/APS summer and winter seasons not only fosters healthy competition but also cultivates a sense of commitment and sportsmanship among our athletes. Noteworthy achievements, such as the five premierships secured in 2023 across various sporting disciplines, stand as testament to the program’s success in nurturing excellence.
Similarly, our theatre program underwent a revitalisation in 2023, reverting to its traditional format of staging captivating productions across our secondary campuses. Months of dedicated rehearsals not only honed the artistic skills of our students but also forged enduring bonds within the performing arts community. The introduction of key leadership roles aimed at steering the strategic direction of the program underscores our commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive arts culture within the school.
Meanwhile, our music program continues to offer a rich tapestry of opportunities for students to explore their musical talents. From choir to individual instrument lessons, students are encouraged to unleash their creativity and expressiveness. Signature events such as More than Words and the Piano and Instrumentalists competition serve as showcases for our students’ musical prowess, while the introduction of new leadership roles ensures the continued growth and innovation of the program.
Beyond the realms of arts and athletics, our cadet program stands as a testament to our commitment to holistic development. Overseen by the Australian Defence Force, the program instils values of leadership, discipline, and resilience in close to 600 Ivanhoe students. Through a series of training camps, field exercises, and ceremonial duties, students not only hone their outdoor skills but also forge lasting bonds of teamwork and leadership.
Moreover, our debating program serves as a crucible for critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. Competing in the Debaters Association of Victoria, our teams consistently demonstrate excellence, with notable achievements including the retention of the coveted Greenway Cup, in our annual debate night against Ivanhoe Girls Grammar School.
The IDEALS program, with its diverse array of offerings spanning community service, STEM exploration, and sports coaching, provides students with a platform to explore their passions and make meaningful contributions to society. Guided by passionate staff and student leaders, participants are empowered to lead by example and effect positive change within their communities.
In tandem with our commitment to community engagement, our community service and outreach initiatives have strengthened partnerships with organisations such as Big Group Hug and 300 Blankets, embodying our values of empathy and compassion. The resumption of the Cambodia Service Project in 2023, with over 100 students participating, exemplifies our dedication to global citizenship and social responsibility.
Finally, our Outdoor Education program, reinstated to its pre-pandemic routine, offers students transformative experiences in nature, fostering resilience, grit, and self-efficacy in the face of adversity.
In conclusion, the co-curricular programs at Ivanhoe Grammar School serve as pillars of holistic education, nurturing the intellectual, artistic, physical, and ethical development of our students. As we reflect on the achievements of 2023, we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing enriching experiences that empower our students to excel and make meaningful contributions to society programs.

EXCEPTIONAL STAFF
Our purpose is to build young people of character and one of the ways in which we do this is to immerse our students in an environment where character is modelled for them. Our staff are the key role models for our students in this regard and work to do exactly this across our School. We also continued to see many examples of our people living out our Ivanhoe Learner Attributes of Courageous, Innovative, Balanced, Collaborative, Ethical, Reflective and Compassionate.
The work ethic of our staff across all campuses gave testimony to their resilience and commitment to our student’s learning and saw the School thrive in 2023. The journey of ensuring Ivanhoe attracts, retains and develops exceptional staff continued through a highly demanding and difficult time across the education sector. Our School continued to experience success in recruitment and was able to build on our existing exceptional staff cohort in a manner reflective of our strategic purpose and our considered approach to workforce planning.
Staff engaged in professional learning across a range of disciplines with Professional Development Days focusing on learning for Academic staff and the continuation of our coaching and mentoring model. Included in this was the ongoing training of all staff in the area of Child Safety which remains our highest priority in all facets of School operations and planning.
A key pillar of our Strategic Plan for 2023 was the development of the Ivanhoe Charter for Leadership. The charter was written to highlight the key characteristics and observable behaviours that we, as a community, expect to see in the way in which our leaders conduct themselves. It was put to use immediately as a central piece in the recruitment of our new leaders as offered to both internal and external candidates. This charter provides clarity around our community’s expectations of leaders and going forward will form the basis of all professional learning and growth in leadership practices across the School.
In 2023 we further acknowledged the importance of our colleagues who work in support of our academic staff. Traditionally referred to as Educational or Administrative Support Staff, this staff cohort provides a vast array of outstanding professional services across all of our campuses. Included in these services are Finance, IT, Grounds and Maintenance, Advancement, Marketing and Communications, Registrar, Alumni, Reception, Nursing, Personal Assistants, Office Administration across Middle and Senior Years, in Co-curricular, VCE & IB, Sport and Music programs, Human Resource Management, Library Services and a vast array of technicians working in a range of academic subject areas such as Science, Food Technology and the Arts. Accordingly, we proudly refer to this collective as the Professional Services Staff.
Our People and Culture team partnered with key stakeholders in developing and enabling appropriate staffing structures to better support
student learning particularly in the area of Individual Needs learning and also in our extensive Performing Arts, Sport and broader co-curricular program. On a practical level the team continued the implementation and review of its employment lifecycle processes and workflows benefiting from the efficiencies of evolved and embedded practices. Our practices have enabled efficient and timely engagement with potential candidates for employment and has streamlined our induction processes allowing for a great deal of automation in supporting staff as they begin or continue their professional journeys at Ivanhoe. Of course, the personal touch and connection remains a high priority and key element of the successful transition into our School that our new staff experience.
