IVANHOE LEARNERS

Ivanhoe Grammar School develops young people of character, fostering moral, civic, and performance character alongside a passion for learning, curiosity, resilience, and embracing diversity. In early 2024, Ivanhoe proudly became one of Australia’s first schools accredited as a School of Character.

Fostering global citizenship remains a guiding value at Ivanhoe Grammar School, with service and leadership woven into the fabric of our culture. Today, this focus has evolved to inspire students to think beyond their local community, embracing a broader perspective that builds global awareness, empathy, and a sense of shared responsibility. Students reflect on the essence of Global Character and share what it means to them.

Nick George – Prefect

Global Character embodies the commitment to improve not only oneself but the lives of others across the world. It is an individual who accepts and acknowledges the different cultures and perspectives that make us all unique as well as being open-minded to put themselves in other’s positions to truly understand their views. It is only

then that an individual can gain the understanding to communicate with others globally and create change.

In 2023 I took part in the Cambodia Service Project. I raised money and assisted in educating children in Cambodia. This adventure was a new experience involving a fresh culture and a different style of living. After observing the lives of the children, it was made clear that those who were able to learn English had a much greater scope of employment than those who couldn’t access such education and were left in

a cycle of poverty. This presented to me the different struggles that individuals are born into all around the world.

Through the various insights I gained at Ivanhoe, I can navigate the world outside of school with an open mind towards the different perspectives and experiences of those I encounter each day. To uphold the title of a global citizen, I will promote peace, sustainability and fairness in our communities and communicate the necessity to act as a collective for positive change across the globe.

Global character is about connecting with different people from different backgrounds, sharing each other’s experiences and culture and understanding differences.

At school, I was involved in the International Student Council and ELICOS Mentor Program. It helped me to be more familiar with cultures from different countries. I thought the people

around the world were all different and quite unfamiliar but now, I feel like they are all the same human beings.

After school I can build more experiences in different places in other countries – maybe I will work overseas or just visit for a holiday – to grow myself more as a global citizen.

A young person of character is resilient, able to overcome difficulties and use them as an opportunity for growth.

The essence of global citizenship comes from being aware and open-minded in all aspects of life. This mindset has enabled me to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by Ivanhoe Grammar School, including participating in both the European Battlefields Tour and the Cambodia Service Tour in 2023. These experiences, though vastly different, broadened my global perspective

Edward Redlich –Prefect

When we contemplate how we are individual humans on a planet of nearly eight billion people, it makes it easy to feel that we are insignificant in the grand scheme of things and that our actions do not matter – for better or worse. In my eyes, having global character is the ability to recognise that your conduct and actions, as miniscule as they might be relative to the earth we

Tharinie Uruththiran –Prefect

I strive to be a good global citizen by being involved and aware of international affairs because the choices we make today, and the topics we choose to be educated on contribute to the future that we are building. The idea of a global character is essentially built off the fact that we are all global citizens who have some sort of role to play in bettering our society. I believe that having global character means you just care enough about the impact you have, and care enough to make a positive change.

by revealing both the stark contrasts and unexpected similarities between them. These trips offered an insight that allowed me to see the extreme depravities of humankind in the First and Second World War battlefields, as well as the tragic history of genocide in Cambodia. I also witnessed the indomitable spirit of humanity, seen in both the stories of heroism and sacrifice during war, and the welcoming, selfless nature of the children and people of Cambodia. These experiences have had a profound impact on my global outlook. My involvement within Australia,

particularly through the Cadet Unit, has similarly contributed to my growth as a global citizen. The leadership lessons and the ability to work with diverse individuals in a shared environment have left a lasting impression on me. Ivanhoe Grammar School provided me with valuable experiences and a broadened worldview that I carry with me as I continue to travel and study history. These experiences have also fuelled my desire to give back to my country through future service in the Army Reserves.

live on, have the potential to impact on an ultimately global scale. In recognising this, we then can make a true, positive contribution.

The Cambodia Service Project helped me realise just how diverse people’s experiences are across the globe. By becoming friends with Cambodian people, I came to recognise the mutual value of learning and sharing culture, experiences and lifestyle with others. I learnt that communication and building interpersonal relationships with people with very different backgrounds is a productive means of active learning that

can allow global involvement that can be truly beneficial, rather than just symbolic of global character.

By participating in school activities, I learnt about others and have been able to increase my impact. When I graduate, I hope to pursue direct forms of involvement in projects both in Australia and internationally. I would particularly like to travel to areas of central Africa to build connections with local communities, learn about the lifestyle there and contribute to different projects that work towards positive and genuinely wanted change.

The service trip to Cambodia deeply impacted my worldview. We immersed ourselves in the local culture, learning about their traditions and history, including past conflicts. Despite the tragedy, the resilience of the Cambodian people was inspiring. Their strength in overcoming adversity and preserving their culture left a lasting impression. Additionally, participating in Model UN broadened my perspective on global issues by exposing me to different viewpoints and the complexities of international relations. It taught me how to approach challenges with an open mind, consider diverse perspectives, and recognise the interconnectedness of global problems.

At Ivanhoe, I’ve learned the significance of empathy, cultural understanding, and being an informed global citizen. As I move forward, I aim to stay aware and educated about global issues, particularly those affecting vulnerable communities. My experiences, including the service trip to Cambodia and participation in Model UN, have highlighted the importance of understanding diverse perspectives. By engaging with current events and continuing to learn, I hope to foster a greater awareness of global challenges, ultimately contributing to informed discussions and encouraging positive change within my community and beyond.

I plan to pursue my passion for Science and Maths at a tertiary level. To be a young person of character, one must constantly find ways to better themselves and the world around them. The Ivanhoe Learner Attributes of Innovative and Ethical stand out to me as they are principles I use to guide me through my life. Thank you to all my teachers and friends who have made my journey at Ivanhoe an incredible experience.’
