As an open-entry school, students of all abilities are a part of our School community. I am delighted to share the results of our students who successfully completed their VCE and IB Diploma. Although the results published here share some of our top achievements, the importance of celebrating the personal best of all our students cannot be underestimated. I congratulate all students who have worked to their capacity and thank the dedicated teaching staff who have supported them.

DUCES OF 2019 SYNC LIU

SCHOOL DUX AND INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB) DUX ATAR: 99.95 What university are you going to and what will you be studying?

I have applied to do either a double major in Film and Physics or Film and Economics in the US.

What is your future aspiration?

Sometimes eye-catching content lacks scientific rigour or even ethics, and rigorous content can at times be pedantic and boring. I hope to incorporate my interest in Film and Science to present knowledge in more friendly forms, while its core message remains untouched.

What makes a young person of character? To quote Mencius: ‘We

change and grow only when we make mistakes. We realise what to do only when we work through worry and confusion. And we gain people’s trust and understanding only when our inner thoughts are revealed clearly in our faces and words.’

What advice would you give to a senior student at Ivanhoe?

Everyone’s way of working is different, don’t imitate people around you, find what suits you and stick to it. Also make sure you have enough sleep, prioritise your tasks and never trade sleep for extra hours of study.

ALEX FAN

THE RIDGEWAY CAMPUS VCE DUX ATAR: 99.05 What university are you going to and what will you be studying?

I chose the University of Melbourne, Bachelor of Science.

What is your future aspiration?

For the short-term, complete my undergraduate course and get ready for the postgraduate course of actuarial study.

What makes a young person of character? Diligence, perseverance

and integrity, these are what my parents have taught me throughout my life. While for me, being humble and respecting everyone else are both far more important.

What advice would you give to a senior student at Ivanhoe? Keep

in contact with your teachers and mentor. Stay calm and play well with your friends. And if necessary, meet with the psychologist, as I did, before the final exams.

AMY REDDROP

PLENTY CAMPUS DUX ATAR: 99.30 What university are you going to and what will you be studying? A double degree in Laws and Arts at Monash University.

What is your future aspiration? As a

child I have always been intrigued by the law and have long aspired to study and practise law. I believe it is an interesting field as it is continually progressing and that I have the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the legal sector.

What makes a young person of character? Enthusiasm and showing

an unparalleled determination to achieve anything you set your mind to, while remaining a conscientious and considerate individual who is willing to help others in need.

What advice would you give to a senior student at Ivanhoe? Something

that really helped me was choosing subjects that I was passionate about. I believe activities, such as cadets, debating and the school production are integral in allowing students to spend time with their peers and provide them with a much needed constructive outlet.

IVANHOE LEARNERS

BELLA

EDWARD

What has been the best thing about Year 12?

What subjects did you do and why?

What advice would you give to other students about Year 12?

What co-curricular activities did you enjoy the most?

The best thing about Year 12 has been experiencing the ‘Year of Lasts’ with the people who have shaped me to become who I am today over the past 6 years. It’s really gratifying knowing that during one of the most important years of your life, you have a whole family of people ready to lift you.

Year 12 undoubtedly can become really stressful for some, especially if you’re trying to balance too many things at once. Don’t be afraid to ask for help – there are people ready to support you and ensure that you make it through the ‘marathon’ that is Year 12.

What is your favourite memory of secondary school? My greatest memory of my secondary school experience would have to be standing arm in arm with my Year 12 family at our valedictory dinner, screaming the School song and war cry for the last time. This was a distinct moment where we were all truly unified as a year level and celebrating the last of our ‘lasts’.

What is the one thing you are really looking forward to after exams are finished?

Apart from finally being able to relax, following exams I am really looking forward to having a newfound freedom to delve into new things; travel, meet new people and experience university life.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

In the future, I see myself working to improve people’s lives worldwide as well as tackling the many issues we are facing as a globe. Above all, I hope that I am happy and working my hardest to achieve my aspirations.

What are you planning to do after exams?

I have established a keen interest in Global Politics which I have decided to continue studying at university.

What two Ivanhoe Learner attributes speak to you out of the seven: courageous, innovative, balanced, collaborative, ethical, reflective and compassionate? And why? I believe that having the courage to stand up for what you know is right in order to bring about a positive change, even if you’re told that you’re wrong and may be reprimanded, is vital in today’s society. I think that harbouring compassion for fellow peers, teachers and loved ones is especially important. It’s important to have the ability to understand other perspectives and feelings and using this knowledge to support people in times of need.

Celebrating the Class of 2019 – Young people of character

My VCE subjects included English, Methods, Chemistry, Physics, Legal Studies and Product Design Technology. I chose these subjects because they stood out to me as something that I would enjoy, for me it was more about doing what I was going to enjoy than anything else as this translated into me putting effort in to do my best. My co-curricular activities included equestrian, athletics, kayaking and school musicals. I enjoyed equestrian the most due to it being my passion outside of school since a very young age.

What has been the best thing about Year 12?

The best thing about Year 12 has been the unforgettable memories that have been forged with the entire year. Every school activity means more as a Year 12 student and everyone gives it 110%.

What advice would you give to other students about Year 12?

Enjoy the year and don’t get too bogged down in study and stress for SACs and exams. While they are important, so is enjoying time as a cohort making fun memories.

What is your favourite memory of secondary school?

My favourite memory from secondary school comes from the retreat aspect of Year 10 camp. The collaboration of the whole group led to fun times and unforgettable memories.

What is the one thing you are really looking forward to after exams are finished?

With exams finished, I am really looking forward to having a less busy timetable allowing for more concentration to be placed upon my equestrian pursuits.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

In the future I would love to be able to represent my country in the equestrian sphere.

What two Ivanhoe Learner attributes speak to you out of the seven: courageous, innovative, balanced, collaborative, ethical, reflective and compassionate? And why?

I believe that balanced and compassionate ‘speak’ to me the most. Balance is a crucial aspect to everyone’s life not just in school but for their entire life. Being able to develop a balanced lifestyle will set you up for success. Being compassionate and just generally kind to everyone around you is another value that never goes astray, kindness is something that we all like to be treated with and thus should express it as much as possible in return.

MILA

JETHRO

What subjects did you do and why?

What has been the best thing about Year 12?

What co-curricular activities did you enjoy the most?

What advice would you give to other students about Year 12?

I did the IB so we have to do English, a Language B, Maths, and at least one science and humanities subject. I chose French B as I have studied French from Year 7 and wanted to continue it, and then I also chose Chemistry, Psychology and Sports Exercise and Health Science as my other subjects. I needed Chemistry to do the university course I’m interested in, and then I chose the others as they were subjects that interested me and I have really enjoyed them! My two favourite co-curricular activities I have done are Cadets and the Musical. I have been involved in Cadets since Year 8, and I honestly believe it is the best leadership program the School has to offer, as well as such a great opportunity to make lasting friendships and have so many memorable experiences. I did the school musical Into the Woods this year for the first time, and that was also an incredible experience. I met so many different people and challenged myself through performing on stage, and I regret not having tried it sooner.

What has been the best thing about Year 12?

Bonding so closely as a year level. Through the stress of everything, you become friends with so many people that you might not have ever spoken to before. I’ll really miss that part of our last year.

What advice would you give to other students about Year 12?

Rely on everyone around you for support! You will go through so many ups and downs but it is important to remember that everyone around you is going through the same thing and will understand exactly where you’re coming from. Also chat to your teachers as much as you can, you can often rely on them for emotional support as well as academic support.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

I’m planning on going to Melbourne University next year and doing a Bachelor of Science, and I would love to get into the medicine course and become a paediatrician. I’d love to work in the Royal Children’s Hospital at some point in the future. I’m also really keen to travel a lot in my university breaks, and maybe even work abroad during my study.

What two Ivanhoe Learner attributes speak to you out of the seven: courageous, innovative, balanced, collaborative, ethical, reflective and compassionate? And why?

The two that speak to me the most are probably innovative and compassionate. I think that having the capacity to be innovative and being able to think creatively is a really great attribute to have in your life, and it will help you in so many different ways. I also believe that one of the most important qualities in a person is compassion and having that ability to act kindly towards everyone you encounter.

There are so many amazing things to look forward to and enjoy throughout the year – sport finals, formal, final House events and the crazy final few weeks. In Year 12 you lead the culture of the School, meaning there is greater cohesion across the entire year level. So, my favourite part of Year 12 is just enjoying the social aspect, where I can play a part in an awesome culture which is bigger than ourselves.

Just work hard consistently, but also know when enough is enough and give yourself some time to breathe.

What is your favourite memory of secondary school?

The cadet camps in general – but specifically the most recent Annual Cadet Camp, where we camped out under the stars on the final night. Cadets has influenced all of us dramatically, so this specific experience was a fitting end to such an amazing program.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

I want to find myself in a career that helps others. Not too sure what such a career will look like, but I couldn’t see myself at a desk for the rest of my life. I want to be actively working with others all the time – otherwise I’ll get bored. So my dream is to find a career that I enjoy and that keeps me interested.

What are you planning to do after exams?

A couple of weeks after exams, some friends and I are going on a trip to Vietnam which will be fun. After that, I’m just looking forward to spending time with family and making trips down to the beach or camping.

What out of school interests/activities are you involved in?

During my time at school I’ve played basketball, water polo and a bit of footy outside of school. I’ve also been playing the piano for most of high school and also been working at a local café. I find these are nice distractions from the business of school.

What two Ivanhoe Learner attributes speak to you out of the seven: courageous, innovative, balanced, collaborative, ethical, reflective and compassionate? And why?

Compassionate is probably the most important one for me. I think that the ability to empathise with others is really important and can help people achieve amazing things that benefit others as well as themselves. Balanced is also important – Ivanhoe doesn’t just focus on academics, or just sport, but rather encourages a wide range of activities to achieve the most possible. That teaches an important life lesson; finding a balance will be important in the rest of our lives as we find jobs or new passions.

YOUNG PEOPLE OF CHARACTER At Ivanhoe, we are all about a well-rounded education and rich diversity of learning both inside and outside the classroom, alongside contributing to the wider community. Being a person of character is giving your best and working with others to help them be their best. Our goal is for students to apply themselves to all aspects of life during their school years. In doing so, they will develop self-belief and confidence, which will set them up for their future.

GOOD GLOBAL CITIZENS The Ivanhoe Diploma is a voluntary program recognising an individual student’s additional contribution to the School and wider community above and beyond their academic pursuits across five areas of expertise: action, civic, engagement, creativity, inter-cultural understanding and leadership. The Ivanhoe Diploma is awarded in addition to a student attaining their VCE or IB Diploma. It recognises that lived experiences and commitment are highly desirable qualities tertiary institutions and employers are looking for in young people.
