Business Manager’s Report

Brothers and Sisters,

We’re excited to kick off a new year of working hard for our members and delivering results for our communities.

This issue, we’re spotlighting our members who have helped make Boston Children’s Hospital the top-ranked children’s hospital in the country for nine years running. By handling general maintenance and taking care of the grounds, Local 877 helps ensure comfort for patients and their families so they can focus on their health. Take a deeper look at our work on pages 6-7.

Being part of a union means strength in numbers. Because we stand together, we have the power to negotiate for the wages and benefits we have earned. That includes a comprehensive healthcare package for our members and their families. Get the latest update on your health and welfare benefits on page 4.

International Union of Operating LOCALS 147,

Finally, I encourage everyone to attend our union meetings and to bring along a coworker. Attending one of these meetings can be a great way to learn more about what is going on with our union and how you can be involved. Check out the back cover for a full list of our upcoming meetings.

Let’s make 2023 our best year yet!

In Solidarity,

A.F.L. LOCAL

The Union Difference

A job is about a lot more than a paycheck.

It’s about pride in putting in an honest day’s work. It’s about dignity in receiving the benefits that you’ve earned. It’s about respect for your role in building your community.

Thousands of stationary engineers and maintenance workers across New England can enjoy that pride, dignity, and respect because they are members of IUOE Local 877. That’s what we call the union difference.

The union difference is about skill.

Union workers know how to get the job done right the first time, avoiding costly mistakes. Our licensed members have the highest standards in the industry and undergo advanced training to provide the highest quality of work.

The union difference is about safety. When you leave home in the morning, you and your family shouldn’t have to worry about whether you’ll return. Unions have always been at the forefront of ensuring safe, healthy, and fair conditions on the job — because we put our people above employers’ profits.

The union difference is about solidarity. When you’re in a union, you’re never alone. By standing together, we can bargain for higher wages, better benefits, and safer conditions that a single person couldn’t accomplish alone.

Simply put: life is better in a union. Thank you for being part of our union family.

Worksite Spotlight: Boston Children’s Hospital

Boston Children’s Hospital has been ranked as the country’s best pediatric hospital for nine years in a row, and Local 877 is proud to play a role in that success.

45 members of our union are employed at the hospital, ensuring it runs smoothly by handling general maintenance, taking care of the grounds, and keeping essential HVAC equipment running. When working in a busy environment like a hospital, our team has to be readily available when the staff needs work handled promptly.

Working at a hospital also means our team has to be constantly mindful of our surroundings. For example, our members are often required to go into a patient’s room to fix a problem, so we must ensure the patient’s safety as well as our own. Caring for a child at a hospital is a difficult time for families and staff. Local 877 is proud to work hard every day to ensure comfort and peace of mind for these young patients so they can focus on getting better and getting home.
