President’s Report

This month, we once again honor one of the greatest American activists and leaders in history, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was the most prominent leader of the Civil Rights movement from 1955 up until his assassination in 1968 Inspired by his own Christian beliefs, he led non-violent protests and civil disobedience against Jim Crow laws and other forms of discrimination

During his leadership and activism, Dr King recognized the importance of organized labor and encouraged people to join labor unions. He understood the connection between economic security and racial equality He gave many speeches in support of striking workers and one speech specifically at the AFL-CIO Convention in 1961, in which he explained how Unions were essential to the Civil Rights movement He said “Our needs are identical with labor ’s needs - decent wages, fair working conditions, livable housing, old age security, health and welfare measures, conditions in which families can grow, have education for their children and respect in the community ” In the autumn of 1965, once again before the AFL-CIO, when speaking of the advancements made over the past 30 years, he said “At the turn of the century women earned approximately ten cents an hour, and men were fortunate to receive twenty cents an hour The average work week was sixty to seventy hours. During the thirties, wages were a secondary issue; to have a job at all was the difference between the agony of starvation and a flicker of life The nation, now so vigorous, reeled and tottered almost to total collapse

Important phone Numbers

The labor movement was the principal force that transformed misery and despair into hope and progress. Out of its bold struggles, economic and social reform gave birth to unemployment insurance, old age pensions, government relief for the destitute, and above all new wage levels that meant not mere survival, but a tolerable life. The captains of industry did not lead this transformation; they resisted it until they were overcome When in the thirties the wave of union organization crested over our nation, it carried to secure shores not only itself but the whole society.”

As we reflect on the enormous contributions made by Dr King, it is important to remember the critical role labor unions served in the progress of the Civil Rights movement. His recognition and appreciation of those entities and his words are still inspiring today

Benefits Update

As most of you know, one of the gains we secured during the 2022 Negotiations was company-paid dental and vision insurance for all employees once they’ve achieved 90 days seniority. Those changes takes effect January 1, 2023. Therefore if you have your 90 days in, you will be automatically enrolled in dental (Delta Dental of Michigan) and vision (EyeMed) insurance. Only you, the employee, will be automatically enrolled. You will have to add any dependents within 30 days. You will have to add them to each insurance separately, meaning you will need to contact Delta Dental AND EyeMed to add dependents. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to call Melany at the Union Hall at (330) 392-1591.

Shop Chairman’s Report

I hope everyone and their families had a Happy New Year!!! It seems like 2022 absolutely flew by and maybe that is a sign that I am getting older but that is the subject of a different article for a different time. We had an eventful year as we continue to deal with the remnants of the COVID and the auto supply chain breakdown that has affected just about everything, but I have hope that life will get back to something less than the crazy that we have been dealing with for the last few years

As we look forward to all things 2023 there are a few gains we made during the last set of bargaining and these benefits begin on January 1, 2023. The biggest of these gains is the attainment of Vision and Dental coverage on the 91st day of employment. No longer will our membership and their families wait for 36 and 60 months for these coverages to begin. I just want you to think about this for just a minute, in the 29 years I have been here it has taken 3 and 5 years to gain these coverages and in 2022 this Local Union bargaining team, backed 100% by this membership, was able to resolve one of the longest injustices once and for all for the Local Membership, and this

Apprenticeship testing

Over the next few weeks, the Apprentice Committee will be meeting with the State of Ohio Apprenticeship Department and formulating plans for the Apprentice Selection Process As of now we are still looking at testing in late February or early March, so there is time to prepare and study for the test. There will be a lengthy Sign-Up period so that everyone will have an opportunity to sign-up, a detailed schedule of dates will be announced As in the past, special flyers will be in all the plants, the clock areas, and Union bulletin boards announcing the details. The sign-up period will be for all in-

one thing proves that when we all get behind one issue that issue will be resolved, because our true power is our ability to stand together for the greater good of all of us I want to especially recognize Mike Kish for not allowing this company to weasel away from those negotiations without fixing this injustice, good job Mike!!

Unused vacation and perfect attendance earned time that rolled over from 2021 into 2022, and wasn’t used in 2022, will be paid out by the end of January For those who attained perfect attendance for the entire year you can expect to see your additional time off listed on your paystub soon after the first of the year. I appreciate local Managements efforts to get those hours listed as soon as possible after they are earned, and they have done well since we made this agreement back in 2020 negotiations

Another gain made at the bargaining table was the additional indenturing of new apprentices for our skilled trades The testing and interview process will begin soon as the committee continues to meet to lock down the details Look for postings in the Plants or articles in this paper. JJ Scarmuzzi and Rick Mercer are heavily involved with this process, and I want to thank each for their dedication to rejuvenating our skilled trades workforce I want everyone to know that serving my apprenticeship was one of the best opportunities I have ever had and being part of getting new apprentices into the trades is something that has not been easy, but it has and will continue to be very much worth it for our future. See you at the meeting!!

terested Seniority candidates. Apprentice test will follow a few weeks later, testing dates and times will be assigned to those choosing to sign-up. The test will be made up of several sections: Skilled Trades Reading Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning / Math Problem Solving, Graphic Arithmetic, Mechanical Arithmetic and Space Reasoning. After the testing is completed and graded, a list of the upper 30 percentile will be generated showing who will be interview eligible. Interviews will then be scheduled in the following weeks. The required documentation of your schooling, certificates, and experience is needed to support your responses in the interview process Points will be awarded for education knowledge of Trades and related work experience. These documentations should be provided as support for a meaningful interview In preparation for testing, those interested should begin looking at study materials pertaining to Apprentice Testing. There are tons of study guides available on-line and also in the local libraries. Any questions please contact me at (330) 373-7926

Committee Reports

Shop Committee - Brian Lutz

I recognize the Chairman of the Shop Committee Mr Brian Lutz

• Plant 47 schedules in December are reduced due to the holidays and Mexico depleting their inventories due to year end The month of November produced 130 million pieces; 11 million pieces are past due The plant will be shutting down for the holidays on December 24 and resume on January 2 at 6am The toolroom and maintenance will continue to work December 26 thru December 30 and there will be some laborers on A & C crews Management should be in the process of offering coverage for those who submitted vacation requests from Nov through the end of the year The new chiller has been approved and it will be installed and debugged by Sept 14, 2023. Management is preparing to submit an A. R. to replace some of the older presses in the plant That should be submitted by the end of the 1st quarter of 2023 Soon to be released from the tool build manufacturer in India are 19 new project tools and 5 capacity tools. Originally destined for Mexico, they were redirected to plant 47 due to complications in those other facilities At this time, plant 7 intends on keeping the same holiday shutdown schedule with no planned production at all.

• Plant 10 schedules are at their lowest levels of all time, at less than 8 million feet per week The week of Thanksgiving and the week after combined schedules were 5 million feet per week. Management decided against laying everyone off the week of 12/19 because of a slight increase in schedules that week in addition to some production issues We discussed the combining of the 373 re-op and service equalizations at the plant unit. A big thanks to Mark Graczyk, Gary Tillman and Heather Perez for all of their help with that

• Labor Relations Representative Alan Domes from plant 10 would like to

thank everyone for their donations of food for the Warren Family Mission. APTIV and Local 717 delivered 2 pickup truck loads of food. The Warren Family Mission was very grateful for our donations, as they had received many turkeys but we were the only entity to donate everything else needed to feed many families in our community. The toys for Tots toy drive ends this Friday

• Plant 11 shipped 225 million pieces in November. The plant has been working partials on the weekends to make up for the 60 million that are past due. The reason for the past due is the lack of capacity December schedules are at 50-55 million pieces per week, including past due. January / February schedules look to be much better for plant 11. Some partial production and all of maintenance should be getting offers to work Dec 26 thru Dec 30 and Jan 2, 2023. Plant 11 received positive response from top level management as the only plant out of 13 as to not be in the “Red”. The new plant manager credits this to the plant working weekends A new 338 die was received from France. This is our first “4 out” modular die and it has 8 different modules. Management intends to add 3 pipefitters for plant 11 in the new year in addition to the pipefitter starting tomorrow Management informed us that there will be a tour by the APTIV strategy team this Tuesday and Wednesday. These are the people that set 5 to 10 year plans for manufacturing plant products, Robert Simonis will be leading the tour and presentation and he’s asked our members to do whatever we can to put the plant in the best possible light over the next few days. On behalf of my staff and the Shop Committee, I want to wish all of Local 717 membership and their families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

defining diversity & Inclusion

Diversity, equality, equity, and inclusion are terms we hear a lot about today, but what exactly do they mean?

had

first Veterans Committee raffle, and it was a success! I would like

raffles, to be open to all Aptiv employees only. My goal is to have

actual employee win the raffle I will be starting a new one at the beginning of this year. I took over the Committee with a little over $700.00 in our account and as we close out the year, we have $3,281 45 My goal this year is to double that amount and to continue to create a profit year after year.

Being profitable in these raffles and the golf outing is a good start to building a financial stronghold to help our members and our community

In Your Service!

On November 14th and 15th, I attended a diversity meeting with IUECWA in Greensboro North Carolina. Diversity and inclusion Continue to fall in line with the principles that labor unions were founded on Fair work hours seniority breaks healthy and safe work environments wages and benefits to name a few. Various of your contractual rights have a history that shouldn't be taken for granted Things that don't seem important to you now will change as time moves on.

Document 83 of our Local Agreement outlines diversity training (this can be found on page 343 of the 2020 agreement) Here are some outlines that define diversity in the workplace.

Diversity is about the different characteristics that make each of us unique This includes age, gender, race, disability, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, marital status, parental status, height, weight, work style, and all the other dimensions that you will learn more about in the Dimensions of Diversity model below

Equity means ensuring all individuals have what they need to succeed and participate fully, accounting for different access to opportunities, status, and rights

Equality denotes how people are treated and focuses on making sure everyone gets the same opportunities.

Inclusion is creating an environment of belonging where employees feel welcomed, supported, respected, and valued, and provides an environment that encourages them to contribute their best work.

So what could be your contribution as a member of Local 717 ? We have a lot of new faces here so please help these people feel welcome.

In solidarity
