BCSP Advising Form Instructions

Page 1

Dear BCSP Participant: This memo outlines the advising process required as part of your acceptance or conditional acceptance in the BCSP. The MAIN purpose of the advising process is to discuss the types of classes you plan to take abroad. Your final registration will take place onsite after you meet with the BCSP Resident Director. The advising process will help you identify your remaining degree requirements and the types of courses you should plan to take in Bologna. The Advising Form (see separate PDF) must be completed and returned to the Office of Overseas Study. You may fax, email or mail it to the office (see address on bottom of form). Advising Process: 1. The first step in your preparation for studying at the University of Bologna is to outline with your advisor what you plan to study there. Properly completing the Overseas Study advising plan will help the BCSP Resident Director in Bologna guide you toward enrolling in appropriate courses for the semester/year. You should read the sections regarding academics in your handbook (http://overseas.iu.edu/docs/Handbooks/bologna.pdf) before you proceed. 2. To help you and the director, it is imperative that you have your advisor(s) indicate your academic objectives and how they may be satisfied by Bologna courses on the Overseas Study advising plan. While you can count on the pre-session and the BCSP Center classes being offered as described in the handbook, you cannot select definitive University of Bologna classes until you are in Italy. However, it is still useful for you to get permission from your advisors regarding the areas of study you should pursue in Italy for advancement towards your degree (i.e. history, literature, sociology, etc.). 3. Upon arrival in Bologna, you will meet with the Resident Director for your individual advising sessions to select your courses and sign your final enrollment sheet. Academics Overview: The program in Bologna begins with a pre-session during which you study Italian language and culture. Afterwards, during the Italian academic year, you will register for either 3- or 6-credit University of Bologna classes. In your handbook you can see the wide range of departments in which our students have taken courses. BCSP also offers a number of semester-length courses for program participants only. A minimum course load would consist of the presession, two BCSP classes and one intensive 6-credit University of Bologna course. A student quite proficient in Italian could manage the pre-session and two intensive semester-length UB courses. Selection of Courses: Not all the ‘facoltà’ (schools) may have next semester’s schedule of classes fully determined. However, the University of Bologna (http://www.unibo.it/) website gives a good indication of what courses should be available. You can find course offerings if you select first the ‘Didattica’ from the menu at the top of the page, then select ‘Insegnamenti’ from the menu on the left. This will take you to the search feature for course offerings and descriptions.
