MADRID- LANGUAGE & AREA STUDIES Please note that internship placements for the Spring 2022 semester may be limited and couldbe virtual, based on protocols at placements and local conditions.

IES Abroad offers a variety of internships per semester. Internships can be a wonderful opportunity, but they require a serious commitment. All internships require a minimum of 8 hours per week at the internship placement accompanied by a required academic seminar that meets weekly. Some internship placements could require more than 8 hours per week, but theywill never exceed 15 hours per week. Internships are worth 3 credits and are listed on the IES Abroad transcript with a grade.

Internships cannot be guaranteed and assignments are not made until after you are interviewedin Madrid. For this reason, we recommend that you register for an additional course to serve asa "back-up" course in case a placement cannot be made.

To be eligible for an internship, you must be approved to receive credit from your home school. The internship application consists of several pieces including an Application Form, Approval Form, FBI Criminal Background Check Form (varies by placement), Cover Letter in English & Spanish, and Resume or Curriculum Vitae in English & Spanish. If you apply for an internship, itis your responsibility to complete all pieces of the internship application before the deadline.

Many placement sites require interns to complete a background check, and placement sites where students work with minors and at risk populations, are required by law to have one on filefor interns. Because of this, IES Madrid requires that you obtain an FBI criminal background check before you arrive in Madrid. You must upload a copy of your FBI background check through your FBI Criminal Background Check Form and bring the original document with you.

FBI background checks take approximately 6-8 weeks to process; therefore, it is important tostart this process right away!

Please keep in mind that most internship sites require professional dress. Therefore, if you intend to intern in Madrid, bring appropriate clothing. For men this means dress slacks, a sportcoat and a dress shirt; for women, a suit, or a skirt/pants and professional blouse.
