T

he Girl Scouts-Dakota Horizons (GSDH) council, which spans 164,000 miles of North Dakota, South Dakota, and contiguous counties in Minnesota and Iowa and includes 3 Air Force bases and 13 Native American reservations, is a premier leadership program consisting of 9,000 girls and 4,000 volunteers. As the CEO of GSDH, Marla Meyer’s primary responsibilities are to lead strategic planning, drive innovation, and build a strong, winning culture within the council. Additionally, she is the Vice-Chair of the National Steering Committee for the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Although she is incredibly passionate and driven within her role as the CEO, Marla’s favorite role might be as a Troop Helper for her daughter, Madi’s troop. Here is Marla’s Girl Scout story: Before coming onboard with GSDH, Marla was fortunate to gain wonderful experience working for large, highly competitive organizations in the soft drink industry. “When I heard about the opportunity to lead the GSDH council as the CEO, I was immediately connected to their mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character,” she shares. “As I considered pursuing the opportunity with them, I reflected on my time as a Vice President General Manager, the experience I gained, the skills I developed, and what truly motivates me within my career.”

It didn’t take her long to realize that Girl Scouts truly matched her background in organizational management and aligned perfectly with her desire to empower girls. “Not only does my role with Girl Scouts allow me to unleash a girls’ leadership potential, but it allows me to be creative and to contribute to the growth of the organization,” she says. “But, beyond our organization, at Girl Scouts we are the workforce development pipeline for female leadership talent, and I couldn’t be more thrilled and honored to lead this amazing organization. Plus, the timing worked out incredibly. Madi and I became Girl Scouts the same week, which made it extra special. She started as a Kindergarten Daisy, and I became CEO.”

The Girl Scout Experience

Girl Scouts is a complex organization that has research to back girl outcomes. They base their programming on four pillars: Life Skills, Outdoor, Entrepreneurship, and STEM. The GSDH council also makes a concerted effort to provide programming to underserved populations on reservations, small towns, and after school programs to make sure all girls have access to the opportunities of Girl Scouts.

Girl Scouts has been a time-tested, responsive organization that is focused to empower girls. The all-girl, girl-led program leads girls to discover their courage, confidence, and character, while responding to the ever-changing world for girls. Part of the magic is the model of how Girl Scouts works. 1) You start with Girl Potential (every girl has it). 2) Their Skills Programming (from Outdoor to Entrepreneur to Life Skills to STEM). 3) The Girl Scout Leadership Experience (girls Discover, Connect, and Take Action in all that they do). And 4) Caring Adults and Social Capital (they have a mentor from their very first experience). “At Girl Scouts-Dakota Horizons, we will help any girl who wants to become a Girl Scout get that opportunity and those experiences,” says Marla.

Life Skills

Girl Scout badges, beginning with Civic Engagement and expanding to Healthy Living, Communication Skills, Practical Skills, and Global Citizenship, form the foundation of activities that help girls grow as Girl Scouts. Whether it’s by exercising and staying healthy, developing strong relationships with family and peers, advocating on behalf of others, protecting our environment, or exploring careers that can truly change the world for the better, girls gain the skills and the inspiration to accept challenges, overcome obstacles, and take the lead.

Outdoor

Studies show that girls today are not spending nearly enough time outdoors. Technology and structured activities leave less time for girls to get outside and enjoy nature. From the backyard to the backcountry, Girl Scouts has a long and storied history of getting every girl outdoors.

Entrepreneurship

The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest, girl-led entrepreneurial program in the world. “This JULY|AUGUST|SEPTEMBER 2019

happens to be a program that my daughter loves, as it powers amazing experiences for a girl who participates,” says Marla. “By building and running her own cookie business, she learns skills that support a lifetime of leadership, and that is completely true for Madi. When it comes to the Cookie Program, I get to support it as the CEO and Vice-Chair of the National Steering Committee for the program by day, but for those six weeks starting in February, I am simply Madi’s assistant by night and weekend. She has been firm on setting and achieving her Cookie Program goals since she was six, and at that point she dubbed me her “assistant.” I pull/drag the wagon through the snow, keep her safe, and assist with the accounting (anything above a kindergarten to third grade level), and she runs her business. I guide her on how much effort she may need to put in to get to her goals (each girl sets their own), and I tell her I will help get her out to sell, but I will remain the assistant. Four years in, Madi has met her goal each year and has sold nearly 4,000 boxes to date - Her goals. Her effort. Her achievement. She keeps building her base of supporters and customers and has really grown her online business as well. Like Madi, all girls have the same opportunities through our cookie program.”

STEM

Girl Scouts of every age are introduced to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to help them learn what they can do and how they can actually improve the world - whether they're discovering how a car's engine runs, learning to manage finances, or caring for animals. The STEM programs serve to engage young women and allow them to apply concepts learned in school in new ways. Combined with the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, these programs also give the girls the opportunity to combine learning with leadership development, growth mindset development, and other socially desirable skills in a flexible, informal environment that supports student-driven exploration and experimentation. The content and intensity of the programs vary, and are often developed with the same impact goals in mind: to increase girls’ interest in STEM, to increase confidence in their STEM-related abilities, educating girls about STEM careers, and exposing them to STEM professionals through STEM partners.

“We are currently in the preliminary stages of investigating a STEM center,” Marla shares. An interactive center that would give girls a head-start and direct experience with STEM materials and professionals. Many girls take the “off-ramp” to STEM related fields as early as 3rd Grade, and we are hearing from STEM employers that they have major concerns about having a qualified workforce in the future. The STEM center, with our current partnerships and potentially a mobile STEM van, can keep girls interested and provide more opportunities for them in the future.” Wanting to be a part of the STEM opportunities that are offered to the girls, Marla also led her Troop through their Cybersecurity badge.

Girl Scout Alumnae

Girl Scouts is an organization creating the G.I.R.L.’s - go-getters, innovators, risk-takers, and leaders of tomorrow who will make significant contributions across society. The impact of Girl Scouts can be measured. While Girl Scouts is only 8% of the market, over 50% of women in business, 67% of the US Governors, and 73% of US Senators were Girl Scouts. “That’s why we’re making a concerted effort to engage our Girl Scout alumnae,” Marla says. Research shows that compared to other women, Girl Scout Alumnae are 2.25 times more likely to have at least a bachelor’s degree, are 14% more in demand for jobs, and earn 23% more. “Through our ‘Because of Girl Scouts’ campaign, we want to hear their stories about the impact of Girl Scouts,” she adds. Why Girl Scouts

“Girl Scouts has measurable outcomes and real impact,” Marla says. “I see it in my own family, our communities, the region, and across the country. In fact, Gold Award Girl Scouts are some of the best examples of this. These young women spend one to two years on a Take Action project where they select a community issue, create a plan to make a change, invite others to support and participate in the project, and create sustainable solutions.” Their Bronze and Silver Awards are earned by girls and truly serve as Leadership Service Awards in their communities. helbey Hershman of Huron, South Dakota, began her Girl Scout journey as a Daisy when she was in kindergarten. Today, she is a Girl Scout Ambassador. Throughout the years, she’s not only bridged through each level of the organization, but she’s earned the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards for a variety of Take Action projects that she’s completed, in an effort to make the world a better place.

The Gold Award As a recipient of Girl Scouts’ Highest Honor, the Gold Award, girls distinguish themselves as leaders willing to go the extra mile for what they believe in. The award represents their leadership and commitment to making a lasting impact on this world. Spending one to two years on their Take Action project, they: select a community issue, create a plan to make a change, invite others to support and participate in the project, and create sustainable solutions for societal grand challenges. In the 20182019 Membership Year, Shelbey was 1 of 14 Girl Scouts in the Dakota Horizons Council who received their Gold Award, joining an elite group of girls, as only 6% of Girl Scouts nationwide receive the Gold Award.

Because of Girl Scouts To earn her Gold Award, Shelbey decided on a project that she called “Legacy Garden,” which was inspired by a local park near Huron Regional Medical Center that was in need of a little TLC. Her goal with Legacy Garden was to create a wheelchair accessible pathway, add benches for staff, patients, family members, and community members.

She would also create a garden area with flowers and plants for people to relax and meditate. As this was quite a large project to take on, Shelbey started reaching out to businesses and community members looking for donations for the project. She was overwhelmed and amazed at the response she received from the community. East River Nursery was among those businesses. They not only helped her draw up a plan to determine what would be needed for supplies and labor, but they held a fundraiser and donated the proceeds to the Legacy Garden project. Along with East River Nursery, Northwestern Energy, Center for Independence, and the Huron Regional Medical Center helped to make Legacy Garden a reality, which was completed in November 2018. Because of Girl Scouts, Shelbey has been the only Girl Scout in Huron to earn the Gold Award in almost 20 years.

Why Girl Scouts Incredibly grateful for all of the experiences and opportunities she‘s been exposed to and the skills she’s developed over the years as a Girl Scout, Shelbey encourages other girls to get involved with the organization if they can. Kline of Aberdeen, South Dakota, initially joined Girl Scouts as a Aspen Daisy because she wanted to sell cookies. However, she quickly learned

that the organization had much more to offer. Today, as a Girl Scout Junior, the Girl Scout experience continues to provide Aspen with the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. It also provides her with the opportunity to be mentored by the older Girl Scouts, while mentoring the younger Girl Scouts, which motivates her to return to Girl Scouts every year.

Because of Girl Scouts Aspen and her troop, Troop 40186, are currently working on earning their Bronze Award, which is to create care packages for a local nonprofit called Safe Harbor that provides shelter and resources for women, children, and men in crisis situations. Knowing that the children at Safe Harbor usually don’t have many personal items when they arrive at the center, Aspen and her troop decided to help.

Although the project is still in its initial planning phase, the troop has decided to use proceeds from the cookie program to purchase items for the care packages, such as games, snacks, and books. For every box of cookies that a Girl Scout sells, a portion of the funds go back to the troop to fund experiences that the girls choose, such as a camp experience, a travel opportunity, or a community impact project just like the care packages that Aspen’s troop is completing for their Bronze Award. Because of Girl Scouts, young ladies like Aspen have the opportunity to utilize their cookie program to create change in the world and to accomplish a larger opportunity they are aiming to achieve.

Why Girl Scouts Through the Girl Scout Journey curriculum, Girl Scouts learn by doing.

They’re inspired to discover their talents and passions, connect with their troop and community, and take action to make change. Along the way, they gain important skills in Entrepreneurship, Life Skills, Outdoor, and STEM. “Girl Scouts has taught me about the endless opportunities that I have, and that there are so many organizations in town that I can help in different ways,” Aspen shares. As an example, Aspen and her troop took a tour of an ethanol plant and learned about the process and importance of it. They then took that information and applied it to educate others on the importance of using environmentally friendly gasoline, while earning their “Think Like An Engineer” Badge. “Girl Scouts provides girls like me with the opportunity to be themselves, get involved with their community, and learn how to be positive and influential role models,” Aspen says. “Girl Scouts has taught me that I can do anything I put my mind to, and having a positive and encouraging attitude helps me to become a better person. A

s a Community Development Specialist for Girl Scouts-Dakota Horizons, Jenny Payton of Rapid City, South Dakota, centers her outreach efforts on empowering underserved girls through their Girl Scout Leadership Experience and partnering with schools and local organizations to bring Girl Scout programming to girls in existing after school programs and community events. Girl Scouts’ community outreach activities, which are delivered at no cost - scholarshiped to the girls thanks to the generosity of donors and sponsors - reach more than 1,400 girls every year.

Although she wasn’t involved in Girl Scouts as a young girl, her interest grew when her daughter, Grace, started kindergarten and was old enough to become a Daisy. Wanting Grace to experience all that Girl Scouts has to offer, Jenny decided to become a troop leader. The seven years that she spent as a Troop Leader not only gave her the privilege of fostering the growth and development of the young ladies in her troop, but it gave her the incredible opportunity of spending quality time with Grace; memories that she’ll cherish forever.

Because of Girl Scouts, Jenny is now able to focus her efforts fulltime on helping young ladies learn how to make the world a better place; now and in the future. “I work with girls in western South Dakota who might not otherwise have the opportunity to be in a traditional Girl Scout troop,” she says. ”The programs that I work with are STEMbased and encourage the girls to think outside the box. Because of Girl Scouts, the girls have the opportunity to explore the world, develop important leadership skills at a young age, and learn how to be a part of their community - making the world and their futures better and stronger.”

Girl Scouts & STEM

Everything a Girl Scout does in outreach centers around STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), the outdoors, development of life skills, and entrepreneurship. Their outreach efforts are designed to meet girls where they are now and to generate excitement to expand their horizons in the future. Through outreach, they give girls a concentrated participation of the Girl Scout Experience, which they believe results in 5 outcomes: 1) Strong Sense-of-Self – Girls have confidence in themselves and their abilities, and form positive identities. 2) Positive Values – Girls act ethically, honestly and responsibly, and show concern for others. 3) Challenge Seeking – Girls take appropriate risks, try things even if they might fail, and learn from mistakes. 4) Healthy Relationships – Girls develop and maintain healthy relationships by communicating their feelings directly and resolving conflicts constructively. 5) Community Problem Solving – Girls desire to contribute to the world in purposeful and meaningful ways.

“This world can only be made better when adults are positive role models for the younger generation, and the Girl Scouts organization provides adults like me with that opportunity,” Jenny shares. “The organization is committed to building girls of courage, confidence, and character, and I believe all girls deserve to have that opportunity, but it takes adults to create those opportunities.” With a variety of ways for them to get involved and to contribute to the Girl Scouts’ mission, Jenny highly encourages all adults to learn more by reaching out to a local Girl Scout office today. Kindles for Kids #GIRLSCOUTS

race Payton began her Girl Scout journey in kindergarten while living in Sidney, Nebraska. After moving to Rapid City, South Dakota, in sixth grade, Grace joined a local troop as a way of meeting other young girls in her new community. Today, as an eighth grader, she’s a Girl Scout Cadette and leads a troop of her own.

Being a troop leader at a young age is an opportunity and a responsibility that Grace does not take for granted. “My overall goal is to be a positive role model for the younger girls and to lead by example for them,” she says. “I want to encourage and support the girls in my troop as they continue learning what it takes to be girls of courage, confidence, and character.”

Because of Girl Scouts

The local Women and Children’s Home provides a safe place for homeless women and children in the Rapid City area. Many of the single mothers being served at the home have several children under the age of five. The home allows the women and children a chance for stability and healing, while becoming self-sufficient and independent. Knowing that the women and families oftentimes come to the shelter with absolutely nothing, Grace decided that her Silver Award project, which is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn, would be “Kindles for Kids.” Through this project, she is fundraising to purchase Kindles that will be donated to the shelter. With the kindles, Grace’s hope is for the kids to have access to online books and to expand their knowledge through educational apps.

When a Girl Scout commits to earning her Silver Award, she shows that she is a leader who is organized, determined, and dedicated to improving her community. Working with her troop, or individually, she uses her knowledge and leadership skills to make a difference. Investing 50 hours, at minimum, each step she completes leads her toward making a difference in the world around her and provides a chance to learn and grow. Because of Girl Scouts, 105 young ladies received their Silver Award in the Girl Scouts-Dakota Horizons Council by taking on a challenge and making a difference during the 20182019 Membership Year!

Why Girl Scouts

For Grace, Girl Scouts is more than selling cookies and making crafts.

Although she thoroughly enjoys those aspects of the organization as well, what she appreciates the most are the lessons she’s learned about the importance of community service, the opportunities she’s had to develop her leadership skills, and the exposure she’s had to experiences that she might not have had without Girl Scouts. “I encourage every girl, no matter their age, to get involved with Girl Scouts,” says Grace. “Getting involved with Girl Scouts will help them learn valuable life lessons that will stay with them throughout their entire life. I wouldn’t trade my experiences with Girl Scouts for anything in the world.” IHBM JULY|AUGUST|SEPTEMBER 2019

racy Hill of Yankton, South Dakota, got involved with Girl Scouts when her oldest daughter joined the organization as a Daisy when she was in kindergarten. For the past sixteen years, Tracy has thoroughly enjoyed her Girl Scout experience alongside her three daughters, while holding many roles within the organization.

“I began my Girl Scout experience in 2004 as an Assistant Troop Leader for my oldest daughter, Shanna’s, Daisy Troop when she was in kindergarten. I held that role for one year before becoming a Troop Leader. When Shanna was in the second grade, things got really busy. Not only did I become the Event Coordinator for our Service Unit, but our second oldest daughter, Lauren, joined Girl Scouts as a Daisy that same year.

In addition to leading Shanna’s troop and serving on the Service Unit team, I volunteered with Lauren’s troop as a Parent Helper. Girl Scouting pretty much stayed consistent for the next few years. I helped with cookie sorts and nut/candy sorts, helped on planning committees and led stations at events, all while planning and holding troop meetings for Shanna’s troop and assisting with Lauren’s troop meetings. When Shanna started fifth grade, Lauren started third grade, and our youngest daughter, Jazmin, started kindergarten, and you guessed it, she joined Girl Scouts as a Daisy. Naturally, I volunteered with her troop as a Parent Helper, as well. Eventually, I became a Troop Leader for all three troops. Today, I am a Troop Leader for a group of Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts (9th-12th Grade). I am also on the Service Unit Team serving as the Fall Product Program Coordinator and Cookie Program Coordinator. I still plan and lead our Service Unit Day Camp and assist in planning and leading ‘Kick-off’ and ‘Juliette Awards’ each year.

I’m currently working on Wootton Camporee. Millie Wootton was a Girl Scout Leader in Yankton for many years. She enjoyed camping and outdoor activities. She started the Camporee for local Girl Scouts to experience camping and activities, such as climbing, hiking, archery, and more. Millie has since passed away, but it is an honor to carry on her legacy and provide an opportunity for girls to continue having these types of experiences.

Because of Girl Scouts Because of Girl Scouts, I’ve made a positive impact on the lives of dozens of girls throughout the years. All of the opportunities and experiences that a girl is exposed to during her Girl Scout experience will become a part of who she is, and I’ve hopefully been able to be a part of that. I believe girls can do anything they put their minds to, but they need others, especially adults, behind them believing in their abilities. I hope girls know that I’m behind them!

Why Girl Scouts Girl Scouts isn’t just about selling cookies. It’s about empowering girls to discover who they are and to get involved in their communities, while teaching them how to make an impact in the world around them. However, they can’t do it alone. They need support and leadership from adults. They need strong, positive role models who can help them navigate this world, while they gain the confidence to lead it. Volunteers are essential, so I encourage everyone to get involved. Be a source of knowledge, encouragement, and courage for girls!

Girl scouting, in any capacity, is also a great opportunity to enjoy new experiences with the young ladies in your life, while witnessing their ‘awe’ as they discover things about themselves and the world around them. Although not every activity allows you to participate with your kids, there are many that do, and I would highly recommend taking advantage of them.” IHBM JULY|AUGUST|SEPTEMBER 2019
