“more than a pretty face”

Despite the monochromatic theme of this issue, the beauty journeys of black women are not black and white, but many shades of grey in-between. Black women are more than just pretty faces, they are a culmination of different stories and experiences to be told. This issue is only a glimpse into the beauty of black women everywhere.

“Growing up I used to despise putting water in my hair and would avoid it at all costs. Now I see my hair as a . —something that needs water to grow and replenish.
I’m definitely a lazy natural, so a lot of my routine is just spraying water picking and going about my day” plant spraying , , , Jamilah -

Do you feel included in the beauty industry?
“When I was younger there was never really any black women representation when it came to skincare. There’d be one tok e n black girl in a skincare commercial with everyone else being lighter skin tones or white. In recent times this has changed making me feel a lot more comfortable and included in the beauty industry today. I love doing makeup and skincare, being able to see myself in the women in media has always been a big thing for me. ” token included Xyana -

How does social media influence your beauty choices?
“Social media opens me up to new worlds that I would like to explore in terms of my beauty, whether this is with hairstyles, clothes, or other aspects I would like to grow in. I use it positively to take in new ideas that inspire me to go out of my comfort zone. ”

Have you always felt beautiful?
“I’ve never felt ugly, I’ve always thought I was cute or just average. Only recently have I started to feel beautiful, but that realization only came when I started to do more inner work and became more confident in myself. I think I so bright on the inside that a glow hugs me, making me feel so beautiful and loved.”

Have you always felt beautiful?

“LOL no, honestly, I’m still not sure if I’ve figured out how I feel about beauty I still have days where I struggle with body image and feel super self-conscious about my face and overall presence. The toxic mindset I picked up from elementary through high school definitely still has its hold on me, but I’m working on elevating it off a little each day It’s just not fair to keep comparing myself to everything and everyone, comparison is the thief of , and we ’ ve only got this one (long) life to live, so why waste it on things beyond my control?”

When do you feel the most beautiful?

“This might sound like a total contradiction, but I honestly feel the most beautiful when I have no clue what I look like and also when I'm super aware of every little thing I did to “perfect” my appearance. Like, I love a full face of makeup, but I also feel amazing with a bare face and that after getting my hair done. It’s a weird balance of effortless and intentional! Like face card be so vicious they gonna think I did fraud like most wanted who?!”
