In a globalized market, in constant, unexpected change, few businesses can truly boast a history based on the principle of constant innovation, day after day. Weightpack’s roots lie in the example of its founder, Carlo Corniani who, in 1979, had the vision to revolutionize the coeval filling technique: rather than focusing on achieving a certain linear volume, he instead based it on the net weight of the product placed in the container, net of the tare. He was thus able to guarantee consistent product quantity, free from variations in density and temperature, while bypassing the dimensional tolerances of the containers. The “Net Weight” concept was not, in fact, the first patent filed by Corniani, but it signified a historical change in the history of filling machines – the dawn of a new era. In this context the Weightpack philosophy began to form, investing every year considerable resources in research and development in order to increase the quantity and quality of proprietary patents. Modular Systems, Direct Drive Plugs, 24-bit weighing electronics and self-adaptive power management represent the top of the innovation process reached by the company in the last year alone – all technologies that are about to enter the market. MODULAR SYSTEMS The heart of the system consists of the filling-capping monoblock, which can be coupled to input and output modules. The input modules can be assigned to the type of treatment (blower, rinser, peroxide and steam, PAA and sterile water) or act as a connection with the stretchblow molder. The whole system can, in turn, be coupled to a locking machine or, for the NH versions, to an output module for elimination of the output format change. The stainless steel draining modules have the same geometry and components, regardless of whether the machine is NH or BH or independently of the type of industry targeted by the machine itself. The modularity principle, on which the design is based, makes it possible to produce independent and extremely reliable systems. Weightpack is able to produce the same monoblocks, regardless of

how they are used, guaranteeing a significant upgrade in the level of industrialization and reliability, together with a considerable reduction in delivery times. In addition, Weightpack is able to design and manufacture separable aseptic machines in individual watertight modules. DIRECT DRIVE ROTARY TRANSFER DRIVE Thanks to Direct Drive technology, Weightpack is able to guarantee a precise and constant control of both the delivered torque and the vertical load, as well as perfect electronic control in vertical translation and rotation. Any screwing strategy, including the initial counter-rotation for twist-off caps, can be easily implemented, satisfying the customer’s needs. There is also the possibility, in combination with vision systems, to orient the cap, in order to obtain the best possible result. The plug-in capping units are extremely compact, with very low inertia and suitable for any application, from corrosion proofing to aseptic. 24 BIT WEIGHING ELECTRONICS Next-generation electronics, characterized by the use of the EtherCat protocol, allow for the optimization and modularization of monoblock geometries and the interchangeability of free and plug-and-play tool components. SELF-ADAPTIVE PRODUCT FEED MANAGEMENT Tankless filling systems guarantee absolute and certified sterilization in the product loop and favor the minimization of production heads and tails. Artwork creation involves several specific functions: graphic studios, legal dept., translations, marketing, etc. until you get to the Printer. Each department must contribute to the final appearance of the package in order to have a compliant yet attractive appearance for the consumer whilst at the same time, containing all the required information for which accuracy is crucial. The exchange of information among the various operators requires several steps. The Kallik solution provides a “package of functions” which are developed expressly to handle all the necessary information - both graphic and text - for the artwork creation process. The system also integrates with the customer’s own existing database, organizing it and placing it in the appropriate packaging space, and then prepares a complete artwork, ready for approval. It is important to highlight that the system is “scalable”, meaning that it can be “assembled” from the simplest solutions, asset management and approval, to a fully integrated end-to-end artwork work management solution. Among the systems for anti-counterfeiting, it is noteworthy the revolutionary HD BARCODE system. It looks like a Datamatrix, but able to contain about 170 times more information, or 50,000 times more information than a traditional EAN bar code system. HD barcode can hold up to 700kb! At “Track & Trace” level, HD Barcode become a very effective tool, since it allows full traceability of a product. In the food domain, it can become an important tool to control and guarantee the originality of a production. As for the consumer, HD Barcode becomes a very useful tool to have information about the product since, differently to a normal QR Code, it can be read through a normal Smartphone without needing an Internet connection. ertuzzi Food Processing (Bertuzzi) was founded in 1936. The core activity of Bertuzzi has always been focussed on developing innovative technologies for fruit and vegetable processing. Bertuzzi designs and supplies equipment, machines and complete plants to transform any type of vegetable and fruit into juices and purees, single strength or concentrated, baby food, jams, ready-made drinks and, in general, any fruit/vegetables base products. ost dryers use ambient air to provide heat with direct exchange. This is because direct exchange is the most efficient and the systems designed according to this principle are the most performing and compact. However, the system has some issues. First of all, the air emitted by the system must be monitored to prevent the emission of pollutants: they are not only composed of powders, but also of any volatile substances other than water present in the product to be dried. Furthermore, the efficiency of the process depends on the thermo hygrometric conditions of the air entering the system. Finally, potentially explosive products (for example fine flours) being in an oxygen-rich environment, require a careful analysis of the risks aimed at eliminating any possible source of ignition. For these reasons the use of closed cycle dryers is increasingly widespread. With this system, however, air is used to perform heat exchange, but the airflow is not emitted to the outside. Instead it is sent to a condenser that removes water vapor. The air is then

returned to the equipment. Process conditions are constant in every season, and volatile substances can be recovered in the condenser. If the product being dried is potentially combustible, the risk of fire is practically eliminated because the amount of air present in the system corresponds only to the volume of the machine and any principle of fire immediately depletes the oxygen. Finally, since there are no emissions into the atmosphere, the outgoing steam column, often overlooked with suspicion by the passers, is eliminated. The system can be improved with the use of nitrogen instead of air. Nitrogen completely eliminates any risk of explosion or fire, furthermore it has a further advantage, and that is, it prevents the oxidation of treated products. For many food products it improves both the quality and the color of the finished product in a natural way and without additives. www.crsich.net

a maggior parte degli essiccatoi utilizza l’aria ambiente per fornire calore con scambio diretto. Ciò avviene perché lo scambio diretto è il più efficiente e gli impianti progettati secondo questo principio sono i più performanti e compatti. Tuttavia il sistema presenta qualche problema. Innanzi tutto l’aria emessa dal sistema deve essere monitorata per prevenire le emissioni di inquinanti: questi ultimi non sono composti solo da polveri, ma anche da eventuali sostanze volatili diverse dall’acqua presenti nel prodotto da essiccare. Inoltre il rendimento del processo dipende dalle condizioni termo igrometriche dell’aria che entra nel sistema. Infine prodotti potenzialmente esplosivi (ad esempio farine fini) trovandosi in ambiente ricco di ossigeno, richiedono un’attenta analisi dei rischi volta a eliminare ogni possibile fonte d’innesco. Per questi motivi è sempre più diffuso l’impiego di essiccatoi in ciclo chiuso: con questo sistema si usa comunque l’aria per effettuare lo scambio termico, ma il flusso d’aria non è emesso all’esterno. Esso è invece inviato a un condensatore che rimuove il vapore acqueo.

L’aria viene quindi reimmessa nell’apparecchiatura. Le condizioni di processo sono costanti in ogni stagione, e, nel condensatore, possono essere recuperate le sostanze volatili. Se il prodotto in essiccazione è potenzialmente combustibile, il rischio d’incendio è praticamente eliminato perché la quantità di aria presente nel sistema corrisponde solo al volume della macchina e qualsiasi principio d’incendio esaurisce subito l’ossigeno. Infine, non essendovi emissioni in atmosfera, si elimina la colonna di vapore uscente dal camino, spesso osservata con sospetto dai passanti. Il sistema può essere migliorato con l’utilizzo di azoto al posto dell’aria. L’azoto elimina completamente qualunque rischio di esplosione o incendio, inoltre presenta un ulteriore vantaggio, e cioè impedisce l’ossidazione dei prodotti trattati. Per molti prodotti alimentari ciò migliora sia la qualità sia il colore del prodotto finito in modo naturale e senza additivi. www.crsich.net

ESSICCAZIONE ERBE AROMATICHE Molti pensano che per preservare gli aromi di erbe e ortaggi sia necessario un essiccatoio che funziona a bassa temperatura. Le cose non stanno esattamente così: certo le sostanze aromatiche sono usualmente volatili e tendono a evaporare esattamente come l’acqua, seppure con tensioni di vapore diverse. Tuttavia ciò che conta nel processo non è la temperatura dell’aria alla quale lavora il sistema ma la temperatura del prodotto in fase di trattamento. Inoltre è fondamentale il tempo di trattamento: lavorare a bassa temperatura dell’aria implica che la quantità di calore disponibile per lo scambio termico sia bassa e quindi il tempo di trattamento diventa lunghissimo. Questa condizione è perfetta per favorire ogni genere di reazione chimica che distrugge gli odori e altera la natura dei prodotti. Quindi spesso è meglio prevedere un essiccatoio continuo, che lavori in controcorrente con aria molto calda, in cui la temperatura del prodotto resta bassa per via dell’evaporazione ma contemporaneamente il tempo di trattamento si riduce a pochi secondi. Un essiccatoio che lavora ad alta temperatura ha inoltre il miglior rendimento possibile senza dover ricorrere a sistemi di recupero e consente di trattare grandi portate con macchine piccole e compatte. Nella foto è possibile osservare un essiccatoio modello ALFA 2000 per l’essiccazione di menta, progettato per una portata di 5 ton/h di prodotto verde.

DRYING AROMATIC HERBS Many people think that to keep the aromas of herbs and vegetables you need a dryer that works at low temperature. Things are not exactly like that: certainly the aromatic substances are usually volatile and tend to evaporate exactly like water, even if with different vapor tensions. However, what matters in the process is not the temperature of the air at which the system works but the temperature of the product being treated. Treatment time is also essential: working at low air temperature implies that the amount of heat available for heat exchange is low and therefore the treatment time becomes very long. This condition is perfect to encourage any kind of chemical reaction that destroys odors and alters the nature of the products. So it is often better to provide a continuous dryer, which works in countercurrent with very hot air, in which the temperature of the product remains low due to evaporation but at the same time the treatment time is reduced to a few seconds. A dryer that works at high temperature also has the best performance possible without having to resort to recovery systems and allows handling large flow rates with small and compact machines. But what about the homogenizing principle? In order to permanently mix one or more substances in a liquid, a homogenizer must be used in such a way as to make it possible to micronize and disperse the suspended particles in the fluid, rendering it highly stable even during successive treatments and storage. The product reaches the homogenizing valve at a low speed and at high pressure. As it passes through the valve, it is subject to various forces that cause the micronization of the particles: violent acceleration followed by immediate deceleration causes cavitation with explosion of the

globules, intense turbulence together with high-frequency vibrations, impact deriving from the laminar passage between the homogenizing valve surfaces and consequent collision with impact ring. Homogenization can occur with the use of a single stage homogenizing valve (suitable for dispersion treatment), or double stage homogenizing valve (recommended for use with emulsions and for viscosity control when requested). FBF Italia’s range of machines can be commonly classified as follows: • high pressure homogenizers: The homogenizer is often necessary to mix one or more substances within a liquid. This machine allows micronizing and scattering the particles suspended in the fluid, so that the product becomes highly stable, no matter the followings treatments and storage the product may undergo. The “Buffalo Series” homogenizers are manufactured according to the UE directives and are available with capacity ranging from 50 up to 50.000 litres/hour; according to the products to be processed, the requested pressure may vary up to 2.000 bars (29.000 psi), • positive displacement pumps: these pumps are used to transfer the products from a storage system or process one to a further part of the plant at a high pressure. These machines are commonly used for feeding of spray driers, tomato paste plants, osmosis plants, etc. • laboratory homogenizers: manufactured to replicate the same homogenization conditions that can be expected in a real production process these machines offer the possibility to execute tests up to very high pressure (1500 bar) and do not need of any other device to work. Easy to use and to move, with the highest reliability, is the best choice for keeping the production always under control, • positive displacement pumps for product containing particles: these pumps are mainly used for product containing particles with a max. sizes of 15x15x15 mm such as tomato cubes, vegetable or fruit pieces. T

he story of igus began over 50 years ago in Cologne, Germany, with Günter Blase and his wife, who started an activity of supplier for plastic moulded components. Observing his machines and those of his customers, Günter Blase realized that two areas in which he could do much to improve quality and functionality, were energy chains and self-lubricating bearings in high-tech plastic. Next to the quality, a fundamental point was the ability to produce standard products, put them on stock, making them available quickly to customers. A winning idea, since it was not so common to have quickly products of this kind. The first product has been energy chains, then specific cables for dynamic applications followed, so that the classical problem of poor reliability and durability of the whole system could be overcome. And so, for over 25 years igus has been specializing in the development of specific cables for flexible use, also with connectors. The complete kit “readychain” including chain, cables, connectors (and warranty),

ready for installation, is now one of the strengths of igus. Next to chains and cables, another segment on which igus has worked over these years, is the one of self-lubricating bearings. They have been developed over forty five different types of materials and now there are on stock bearings with diameters from 3 to 150 mm. The same for linear bearings, and the two recent families of stock bars and semi-finished products for machining and ball bearings with plastic rings xiros, suitable for industrial applications where the quality of movement and noise are important points, especially where it is not be possible to use grease or lubrication. The food industry is one example, but there is no industrial sector where igus can not offer a solution with its products and the quick availability. IGUS, SPECIALIZZATA NELLO SVILUPPO DI COMPONENTI SENZA LUBRIFICAZIONE

L

a storia di igus inizia oltre 50 anni fa a Colonia in Germania per volere dei coniugi Blase che iniziarono un’attività di contoterzisti per lo stampaggio di materie plastiche. Osservando le sue macchine e quelle dei suoi clienti Günter Blase si rese conto che due aree in cui si poteva fare molto per migliorare qualità e funzionalità erano legate alle catene portacavi e ai cuscinetti autolubrificanti in materiale plastico ad alta tecnologia. Accanto alla qualità, un punto fondamentale era la possibilità di produrre prodotti standard, metterli a magazzino rendendoli disponibili velocemente alla clientela. Un’idea vincente, visto che non sempre si riuscivano ad avere in tempi rapidi prodotti di questo genere. I primi prodotti furono le catene portacavi seguite poi dai cavi specifici per posa mobile, affinché i problemi classici di scarsa affidabilità e durata dell’insieme potessero essere superati. È così che da oltre 25 anni, igus si è specializzata nello sviluppo di cavi specifici per posa mobile, anche già connettorati. Il kit completo “readychain” comprendente

catena, cavi, connettori (con garanzia), pronto per l’installazione, è oggi uno dei punti di forza di igus. Accanto a catene portacavi e cavi, un altro segmento su cui igus si è mossa nel corso degli anni è quello dei cuscinetti autolubrificanti. Sono state sviluppate oltre quarantacinque differenti tipologie di materiali e sono oggi disponibili a magazzino cuscinetti con diametri dai 3 ai 150 mm. Medesimo discorso vale per i cuscinetti lineari e le due recenti famiglie di prodotti, barre e semilavorati per lavorazioni meccaniche ed i cuscinetti a sfere con piste plastiche xiros, indicati per le applicazioni industriali in cui la qualità del movimento e la silenziosità sono particolarmente importanti e soprattutto dove non sarebbe possibile immaginare di utilizzare cuscinetti o guide ingrassate. L’industria alimentare ne è un esempio, ma comunque non c’è comparto industriale e non in cui igus non possa esser presente con i propri articoli e soprattutto con la loro grande disponibilità in tempi rapidi. The VICO-Screen® is designed for retaining materials, filtering and sieving. It has countless applications, mainly in the chemical, mining, pharmaceutical, plastic, paper and food industries. Thanks to their mechanical and construction features, which guarantee a high product resistance, the wedge wire screens can be considered in some cases a more efficient alternative to metal meshes and perforated plates, depending on the specific needs of the customer. The wedge wire screen is a filtering element made of V-sectioned wires, arranged in a parallel manner and welded to support bars or rods. The V-section minimises the risk of clogging, allowing an effective separation of solid elements (smaller than 1 mm) from liquids, both in coarse screening and finer screening procedures, thanks to the wide range of slots available. The VICO-Screen® can also be supplied as a flat panel, often used during germination in the production of beer. The VICO-Screen® can be made with wires and supports of different shapes, sizes and materials in order to be able to resist to different temperatures, pressures and corrosive or abrasive actions. he first time of SIMEI at Drinktec in München (11-16 September 2017) coincided with the world preview of a complete innovative product, our of our standard range: the first model MLE-4441-CAN, for cans bottling. It is a highly technologic solution for craft brewers, needing to commercialize their beer in can. This format has some undoubted practical advantages: easier and more safe to transport, able to fully protect the liquid of it inside from the solar light. Machine is composed of the following stations: 1- RINCER 2- FILLER 3- CAN LIDS DISPENSED: Four lids are singularly released from the loader and dropped on a side shifter, which moves them above the cans. Then, the inert gas injection and water jet for beer foaming are performed. substantially reducing the oxygen quantity in the space between liquid and lid. 4- SEAMER

5- WEIGHT CONTRO: After the seaming, the can is moved on a load cell to check the weight: if it is less or more than the pre-set values, the can is then removed through the expeller included in the supply. 6- WASHING TUNNEL. n the beverage industry, the automatic washing of recycled bottles has now reached a high level of specialization. In this context, works AKOMAG, company located in Soragna (PR), able to offer a varied production, which includes bottle washing machine, rinsing machine, sterilizers for glass or PET bottles, crate washer and accessories to complement. Very large is the choice of the washer, the potential of which obviously varies in base at the model, and the ranges it is from 100 to 60.000 bph. The modular structure of all installations allows to gradually increase the functions and the level of sophistication, including special washing sections and sanitizing, automatic control of process parameters, security systems, energy recovery, reduction of discharges and automatic sanitization of the parties most important from the point of view of hygiene. Start the washing At low production capacity, the range offer GENESI, available in very small dimensions in order to be inserted in any operating environment. Designed under the indication of the producers with low production capacities, the series has a simple but functional washing cycle, which lowers operating costs (water, energy, detergent) without negatively affecting cleaning bottles to recycle, the complete removal of the labels and their total evacuation outside. The particular ease of use and maintenance, increases productivity and reduces downtime. The modularity of the GENESI series allows at the customer to “build a machine to measure” , adapting it from time to time to different types of use (water, wine, oil, beer, soft drinks). Constructed in accordance with the Machinery Directive (CE), is equipped with all the accessories needed for the proper functioning: a heat exchanger built with stainless steel tubes arranged geometrically to prevent the deposit of mud or various precipitation that would compromise the performance or, alternatively, a combustion chamber built with direct burner operation. Safety guards and dust cover to protect the unloading of bottles; grouped grease; saving valve for the water network and automatic control of the presence of water in the last rinsing station; electronic speed control; electronic security on the main gearbox that stop the machine in case of overload; spray pumps with casing and impeller made in stainless steel AISI 316 and protective filters; valves for emptying the waste paper and spray tanks; control panel adjustable, made in stainless steel; IP55 electrical plant; gauges and thermometers in visual range of the operator; setting and control of all the machine by “touch-screen”. This are the main amenities that characterize the series. The GENESI machine is also arranged for the introduction of detergent and liquid additives in the bath and in the detergent

tank, disinfectants and other products in the spraying tanks. Internal spraying (made with self-cleaning rotating nozzles) and external high pressure spraying are easily removable for routine cleaning and maintenance. The loading and unloading of bottles is completely automatic, and perfectly synchronized with the movement of the main chain. Dry cycle To streamline the washing cycle , the company has realized the HYDRA series, a series of fully automatic machines which comprise a first station for emptying the bottles followed by pre-washing spraying and first pre-maceration bath. This configuration helps to reduce the pollution of the detergent bath and reduce fuel consumption. The triple station for labels extracting ensures their complete detachment from used bottles, while the rotating filter displaced over the entire width of the machine ensures the evacuation outside. The bottle washing is complete with indoor and outdoor spraying, which occurs with high-pressure cleaner distributed with rotating nozzles self-cleaning and self-centering. To complete rinsing, however, ensure the phase abatement alkalinity followed by spraying with external and internal water network. Built according to the Machinery Directive (CE) also, the series has a different predispositions that increase safety, including: sensors for slowing down and eventually stopping the machine in case of failure or obstruction of bottles on conveyor; detergent introduction and liquid additives in the bath and other products in spray tanks; the automatic loading and unloading of the bottles is perfectly synchronized with the movement of the main chain; the economizer valve for the water network and the automatic control of the presence of water on the last rinsing station. Other amenities are important, as: automatic resetting of the chutes for loading and unloading bottles from the control panel; grouped grease; electronic variable speed with remote control (inverter); setting and control of all the machine by “touch-screen”; self-centering and self-cleaning rotating spray at high pressure; external spraying easily removable for cleaning and maintenance; valves for emptying baths and spraying tanks; control panel made in stainless steel; IP55 electrical plant; gauges and thermometers in visual range of the operator. At the bottles unloading are arranged safety guards and dust protection. The electronic safety on every gearbox allows at the machine to stop in case of overload. SMART MANUFACTURING’ IS OFFICIAL 2017 THEME FOR AFRICA’S LEADING FOOD PROCESSING AND PACKAGING EXHIBITION

T

he launch edition of Africa Food Manufacturing (AFM), now the region’s largest cumulative exhibition dedicated to the food manufacturing industry, is set to take place on 22-24 April 2017 at the Cairo International Convention & Exhibition Centre (CICC) in Cairo, and with it promises to bring innovation to the food manufacturing sector under the theme ‘Smart Manufacturing’.

Doehler, a global producer, marketer and provider of technology-driven natural ingredients, ingredient systems and integrated solutions for the food and beverage industry will also be present this year. With a motto of “Think global – act local”, Doehler analyse the global food trends and adapt them to products and concepts that are tailored to the specific needs of the different countries.

The 2017 theme of Smart Manufacturing sets the stage for innovation. Africa’s increased demand on the food and beverage industry, fuelled by its growing population, calls for a focus on smart processes in manufacturing to improve and optimise production whilst reducing waste and downtime.

They will be presenting inspirations for new beverages and food products to the visitors at AFM, which include innovative ingredient solutions that are customisable to any business and enable safer and more efficient production processes.

Taking place over three days, AFM offers visitors the chance to source the latest equipment and technologies designed to help optimise processes, manage costs and improve quality. As the leading industry trade fair in Egypt and North Africa, AFM gathers over 250 world leading brands including Bosch, Dohler and Orana – who will all be bringing their latest range of machinery, technology and ingredients to support the entire lifecycle of the food manufacturing process.
