uring the Spring Term, our English and Media students left the college for a three-day trip which took them to the Yorkshire town of Haworth, BBC MediaCityUK in Salford and the National Media Museum in Bradford. Haworth was home to the Brontë sisters, well-known for Charlotte

Brontë’s novel Jane Eyre and Emily Brontë’s novel, Wuthering Heights. The students were able to tour the grounds of their house, hear talks on the Brontë family and do some filming. The students then visited BBC Media City Salford where they had a look around the BBC News set, the Sound Studio, 6 Music

and the Match of the Day studio. On the final day, the students visited the National Media Museum in Bradford, which has exhibitions on photography, film, animation and much more. Visit our YouTube channel to see our student-made video about their experiences during the trip!

rom 30 March to 5 April, our Geography & Tourism students went on a whirlwind tour of southern Italy, the highlight of the year for the busy department. The trip began in Rome with glorious weather, where the group were able to explore some of Rome’s most famous landmarks. They saw the Coliseum, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain and St Peter’s Square in Vatican City, home of the Pope. On the second day, the group travelled to Naples to visit Pompeii, one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. Throughout their visit they were in the shadow of the world’s most dangerous volcano, Vesuvius, which buried and preserved the town of Pompeii in its eruption in AD 79. Following their visit to Pompeii, the students visited Sorrento where they stayed for two nights. During their stay, they hiked to the summit of Vesuvius to see the stunning Bay of Naples, and had a talk about why Vesuvius is so dangerous from a resident volcanologist. The group then headed to the second key archaeological site of the area, Herculaneum. The Roman town is

smaller than Pompeii but better preserved so the students had time to wander the streets and take in the most important buildings and archaeological remains. The students were also fortunate enough to see the Duchess of Cornwall visiting the site, so were able to see our future queen up close! On the fourth day, the group travelled to an Italian family-run farm in the hills above Sorrento to see how olives, olive oil, mozzarella and limoncello are produced. After a delicious lunch the group did the Amalfi Drive, a World Heritage Site, which boasts one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. Following an overnight ferry ride from Naples, the student explored Catania, the main port of the north eastern coast of Sicily. The group then headed to Etna, Europe’s most active volcano. At the summit the students were 3330 metres above sea level, so the weather was below freezing. However as they got closer to the summit, the solidified lava became warm

to walk on. The group were lucky enough to be 10 foot away from the red glow of the slow moving lava, which was around 800°C! The penultimate day in Italy involved a trip to the Aeolian Islands to visit another volcano and bathe in the warm bubbling volcanic muds before travelling back to the port of Milazzo. The last stop on the trip saw the group visit the hilltop town of Taormina, where they enjoyed seeing a Greek amphitheatre, wandering around the backstreets and picking up last minute souvenirs. It was a hugely successful and very memorable trip and the group certainly packed a lot into the week. Here’s looking forward to next year’s Geography & Tourism trip to South West USA!

ive of our most able mathematicians visited Bletchley Park for an awards ceremony as part of the National Cipher Challenge, run by the University of Southampton. The competition involved several complicated ciphers which needed decoding by student mathematicians. Itchen’s team placed 62nd out of over 750 national teams, putting them in the top 10% of the results! Team leader Warren Park was particularly influential in the team’s success, not only solving many of the weekly challenges but also teaching the other students about cryptography. Mathematics teacher Rachel Shipsey said, ‘I was very proud of them all. Hopefully next year
