Welcome to Itchen Sixth Form College

With approximately 1400 students, Itchen is small enough to ensure that every student is known and feels valued, but big enough to ensure we offer the full range of courses you need to progress. This leads to us achieving success beyond our size. Our academic and vocational programmes provide defined pathways to competitive university degrees and employment success. Our first conversation with you will be about what you want to do after Itchen and we will develop the skills you need to ensure you are prepared for your next step. We aim to support learners of all abilities to thrive at Itchen. As a result, our students are offered a range of opportunities to get ahead including work placements and volunteering activities, extra qualifications and national and international trips to enhance their studies. We are a college that is embedded in its local community, but we have a national reputation for our sporting prowess and our students compete regionally, nationally and internationally. CHOOSING THE RIGHT COURSE

There are three reasons you should choose to study at Itchen Sixth Form College: support, inclusivity and enrichment. Your choice of course(s) will depend on your GCSE results and your career pathway. There are a range of options and our staff will help you create an academic programme which is right for you. Each level of study has specific entry requirements as outlined in the table below. Check each individual course for their entry requirement, as some courses may have specific requirements. All applications are considered and assessed on an individual basis.

A Levels vs. vocational qualifications There are several differences between A Level and vocational courses in terms of course structure, course content and how much coursework or examination is involved. Many students take a mixture of A Level and vocational subjects, based on their personal preference and how well their subjects complement each other. Why an A Level may be right for you: z Assessment is based mostly or only on examined content at the end of the two years of study z The A Level structure usually revolves around key themes or areas which are developed throughout the two years of study z The course may involve more academic study, through theoretical and written work z They are run as single awards, which allows you to take three A Levels alongside each other.

General GCSE Guidance We advise students to aim for at least five GCSEs at grades 9-4 or A*-C to have the best opportunities for progression to their chosen subjects. However, to be confident in progression to any Level 3 A Level programme, students should aim for grade 6 in their English and Maths GCSEs, as some A Levels require this for entry.

ACCOUNTING A Level

Entry Requirements Grades 9-6 in English and Maths or three or more GCSEs at grades 9-4 or A*-C. z This course studies recording, interpreting and evaluating the financial performance of a business. z You will be introduced to new concepts such as incomplete records, partnership accounts and capital investment appraisal. z By the end of this course you will have learnt topics such as double-entry bookkeeping and final accounts for different businesses, along with business organisation and management. z 100% exam

BUSINESS A Level

Business is at the heart of our everyday lives and those who study any of these subjects will have a wide variety of progression opportunities, whether they choose university or employment. There are a variety of courses available to suit different approaches to learning and visiting speakers from industry will apply the learning to the workplace.

The faculty of English and Media is known for its academic achievements and the success of its alumni, with students moving on to top universities and employment across the English and Media sector. As part of the Creative Arts Academy, the faculty offers industry-standard facilities such as a green screen, editing software and our own radio station. Itchen Radio is run by students with shows being broadcast weekly via Unity 101 Community Radio. Extra opportunities include national and international trips to places such as museums, universities and TV studios; access to a variety of guest speakers working in the English and Media industries; and the chance to showcase your work through local events and exhibitions. Students also have the option to add the Extended Project Qualification to their academic programme and pursue creative writing interests.

z This all-inclusive package aims to give a one year, solid base in literacy, numeracy, IT and general business skills, gaining nationally recognised qualifications. z You will also be able to take part in taster courses and other activities, such as Software Skills, Business Enterprise and Sport and Fitness. z By the end of this course you may be able to progress onto Level 2 courses, move onto a vocational qualification at another institution or enter into employment.

FOUNDATION LEARNING PROGRAMME

Vocational, Entry Level and Level 1 Entry Requirements

No previous qualifications are needed. z This course is suited to those who want to improve their foundation knowledge in key areas, build employability skills and those who require extra structured support. z It is appropriate if you have a learning difficulty and/or if you need to be taught in a small group with a high level of support. z You will develop your skills in literacy and numeracy through Functional Skills courses, which are delivered at the right level for you. These skills are then accessed through short tests and lead to nationally recognised qualifications. z You will also undertake work experience within college, where there are opportunities to try out a range of different job roles.

Geography, Travel, Humanities & Modern Languages is our largest faculty and it covers various industries. Students have the opportunity to take part in national and international trips throughout their studies. Past destinations have included Iceland, Morocco, Costa Rica, Southwest USA, France, Spain and southern Italy. Our Travel & Tourism students will also benefit from trips to travel providers, including major airlines, as well as a programme of enrichment qualifications.

Work experience We want you to get first-hand experience working in the creative industries so that you can make decisions about your chosen career and higher education options. As a result, we strongly

Workshops and guest lectures We want our students to learn from the best and speak to professionals, so alongside our expert teachers, we also invite guests into the college to deliver workshops about the creative area they work in and offer advice on how to enter into that profession. Theatre for Life and the National Youth Theatre Itchen has strong ties with Theatre for Youth and the National Youth Theatre. Theatre for Life made Itchen Sixth Form College its new home after being encouraged to relocate their youth theatre, as their ethos on promoting social mobility aligns with that of the college. The performers in Theatre for Life are all Southampton based, aged 14-25 years, from low income households and other minority groups such as BAME and NEET. 21 out of the 25 students are from Itchen and they rehearse every Friday from 5pm. The Theatre for Life group will be able to audition for the National Youth Theatre at Itchen for free. Should they be successful they will be helped financially to perform in the National Youth Theatre in London. They will also train with National Youth Theatre directors at Itchen ahead of the audition day. Theatre for Life and Itchen have opened up the opportunity to audition for the National Youth Theatre in Southampton to hundreds of performing arts students. Previously this was not a possibility for Southampton residents without commuting further afield.

Eligibility The High Performance Academy programme is aimed at those with grades 9-6 in English and Maths and at least four GCSEs at grades 9-6 and A*-B. However our Extended Project Qualification is open access to all students and can be taken as a stand-alone enrichment qualification. Our mission Our aim is to help students maximise their potential and be the best version of themselves that they can be. Our tailored programme consists of the following five elements: z Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) z Taught programme z Learning mentors z HE+ programme z Extra-curricular activities

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) The Extended Project Qualification is open to all students at Itchen and will be supported by your faculties. The EPQ is suited to students who are aiming to go to university, as it is similar to a university dissertation and is the equivalent to half an A Level.

Undertaking the EPQ allows you to explore a topic which interests you and present it in the form of a written essay, a project or an artefact. It involves a high level of research and is excellent preparation for the type of independent work you will do in a university environment. Many universities hold the qualification in high regard, taking it into account during their admissions process. Some universities also provide lower entry requirements for certain courses if students are predicted an A* or A grade in their EPQ.

Taught programme This is a skill enhancing, thought-provoking programme designed to further develop high achievers. Learners are given opportunities to practise skills such as debating and research as well as higher levels skills of analysis and problem solving. We look at current issues, invite guest speakers in to speak to students and offer a high level of individualised support. The programme also involves a high level of guidance and mentoring to support your career aspirations. Learning mentors If you show particular ability in a subject area, a learning mentor will be assigned to you to provide the subject specific skills, techniques and support you need to achieve high grades.

Extra-curricular activities All of our High Performance Academy students are encouraged to be involved in extra-curricular enrichment activities whilst at the college. These may include being a part of the Itchen Students’ Union, being a student governor, representing the college as a Student Ambassador or Anti-Bullying Ambassador, taking The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, getting involved in the other clubs and academies which Itchen provides, or even starting a club themselves.

Student Services Our Student Services are based in a centrally located office and are available to discuss personal issues, give careers and higher education advice, help you to organise work experience and more. Student Services is a key part of Itchen and will offer bespoke support for a variety of issues. Careers and higher education guidance Our careers and higher education guidance staff are specialists in their areas and can guide you through the process of planning your career or applying to university. Throughout the year we organise careers events, higher education workshops, guest speakers and external trips to workplaces and universities which can help you to plan your next steps. Work experience and employability In addition to having a dedicated Work Experience Coordinator to help students to organise work experience placements, we will advise you on CVs, prepare you for interviews and inform you of parttime and full-time employment opportunities. We aim to prepare you for life after college, and we will expect you to complete a period of work experience regardless of your level of study. Partnerships with parents Itchen Sixth Form College hosts regular Review Days throughout the year and we will keep parents

updated on your progress via PIPS, our Parent Information Portal System. This online system allows parents to check on your attendance, grades and targets, and to contact your teachers and tutors easily by email. PIPS can be accessed very easily through our website and the free Itchen Sixth Form College app. Parents also receive a handbook containing key information at the start of the year and this can also be accessed through the college’s website and app.

Tutor system All students will have a tutor who can help you manage your personal targets during your time at Itchen as well as be in close contact with parents and teachers. Your tutor will usually be one of your teachers, and will therefore get to know you well and meet with you regularly. The Guidance and Support Manager will also be available to address other issues including wellbeing, attendance and behaviour concerns. Health and counselling We provide various forms of support to meet the health needs of our students. Specialist mental health and wellbeing counsellors are based in Student Services, and we are also able to refer students to external agencies. No Limits are also available for weekly drop-in support. Learning Resources Centre (LRC) The LRC contains the resources students need to complete their studies, offering IT facilities, books, journals, DVDs and research guidance, all of which is free of charge. The LRC also provide a range of e-books for research and study purposes.

Financial support Itchen Sixth Form College receives government funding to support learners who are economically or socially disadvantaged and who face the highest barriers to continue in a sixth form education and we do this by offering the Itchen Financial Support. Itchen Financial Support is designed to help with travel to and from college, course materials/ resources, educational trips and other course-related expenses. Other financial support includes bursaries and scholarships which are available for students who meet set criteria in some courses. These are advertised during the year. These are bursaries available in Law and Performing Arts, and financial support is available to elite athletes competing and national and international competitions through our Academy of Sport. Free college meals are available for all those eligible. Students must check their eligibility and register via Student Services.

SUPPORT4LEARNING 64

Support4Learning is a specialist department which provides support for any student who needs help to study. It is based in W24, near Student Services, and is open to all students throughout the college day. It provides a quiet space for independent study and is staffed by a team of highly qualified and experienced teachers and Leaning Support Assistants (LSAs). We support students who need short term help with developing study skills. Also we support students with recognised learning needs, such as dyslexia, as well those with sensory impairments, physical disabilities and other needs, such as ASD, where long-term support may be necessary.

What issues can they support me with? After an initial assessment, Support4Learning will create a tailored support programme which may comprise of weekly one-to-one sessions, and/or support within the classroom. Support4Learning can help you with: z Study skills and time management z Planning essays and coursework z Maths and numeracy z Access arrangements in exams such as extra time, a reader, or a scribe z Mentoring and personal support

In addition to our 16-19 school leavers’ courses, we also offer Adult Education courses for our local community. These courses can help you progress to university, develop your career and provide you with further qualifications.

English, Maths and Biology These are our most popular courses and they give you the opportunity to gain GCSEs or foundation qualifications in English, Maths and Biology. Access to Higher Education Diploma This course helps you gain access to university through a variety of pathways, including social sciences, health and social care and primary teaching. Teacher and training courses We run a variety of training and teacher training courses, which include part-time teaching qualifications, PGCE and PCE qualifications and courses on assessment and development in the workplace. Childcare, social and health courses Our childcare and health and social care programmes are run by qualified experts in their field. The qualifications provide clear progression routes for learners who want to develop their abilities in care and/or childcare.

Our later start at 9.15am means that you will not need to start your journey into college very early in the morning. You can now also track our college buses with the free ‘Find my Bus’ app, to see where your bus is at a glance.

Bicycles, motorcycles and mopeds There are bicycle sheds and parking available for motorcycles and mopeds. However, it is your responsibility to ensure your transport is stored safely and secured using a heavy-duty lock.

College buses Our college bus service extends over Southampton and Hampshire with seven different contract bus routes.

We are also working in partnership with Xelabus to drive down air-pollution around our local area by having one of our longest bus routes covered by our brand new hybrid bus!

The service remains extremely affordable. In the 2019-20 academic year, a yearly bus pass only cost students £375 if paid before the first day of term! Since we believe that transport should not be a barrier to learning, we keep our prices consistently lower than other colleges.

Bluestar buses We have an agreement with Bluestar, which allows students living in and around Southampton to purchase termly bus tickets at a very competitive rate. These tickets can also be used on evenings and weekends so are very flexible.

Ferry Town Quay Marina is situated approximately 2.5 miles from Itchen and serves ferries from Hythe and East Cowes. Subsidised student tickets are available to Isle of Wight residents from Red Funnel.

Car If you own a car we have free parking available on college grounds and issue parking permits for students. Student parking is also available on residential roads surrounding the college. We would please ask students to be considerate to local residents if parking in the streets.

There are a variety of ways you can get to Itchen including by college bus, car, train, bicycle and ferry. Our students receive heavily subsidised transport on our contract buses and public transport.

Train Our nearest train station is Sholing which is a fifteen minute walk away from the college. A free shuttle service to and from Sholing Station can be arranged using the 196 contract bus. Contract bus connections are also available from Airport Parkway station using the 194 bus, and from Fareham station using the 195 bus.

Notification of enrolment Students who have been offered a place at the college will be sent a letter detailing when they should come to Itchen to enrol once they have received their GCSE results.

2021

GCSE results published and enrolment begins Once you have received your GCSE results, you will be expected to attend your enrolment appointment at the college. This will allow you to finalise your study programme for September and sign up for the college bus service, receive your ID card and lanyard and more.

Alternatively, you can download and print a copy of the application form from our website or request a form through a school or college event and fill it out by hand. If you do hand-write your application, please make sure to send it to: Admissions (New Students) Itchen Sixth Form College Middle Road Southampton Hampshire SO19 7TB Once we have received your application form we will contact you with a date and time for your individual interview, in which you will discuss your intended programme of study with an admissions interviewer. It is important to note that these selections will not be finalised until enrolment. You are also welcome to change your options by contacting the admissions department via phone, email or in person at an open event or at our Welcome Event.

Offer of a place After a successful interview, in which we have received valid proof of ID and a completed reference from your school, providing all is well, we can offer you a place to study at Itchen. By accepting this offer, you will be reserving your place on your intended programme of study. However, please note that these courses will only be finalised during enrolment and are subject to minimum entry requirements based on your actual GCSE results.

We start accepting applications from October 2020 for students who start college in September 2021. Although we do not have a deadline for applications, we advise that you apply as early as possible, as well as attend one of our open events.

Enrolment You will be invited to attend an enrolment interview at the end of August, during which you will finalise your programme of study based on your actual GCSE results. This is where we make sure the path you want to take is right for you.
