elcome to the Autumn 2016 issue of ICoN! The Itchen College News magazine is a celebration of the successes and activities our students have enjoyed throughout the college year. As this is the first issue of the new academic year, we’re looking back at some of the highlights from the Summer term, including events from the summer holidays. We hope that you enjoy reading about what our talented students have been up to and that you feel inspired to get involved in some activities across the college too.

tchen celebrated fantastic A Level and vocational results this August. The college achieved a 98% overall pass rate and saw a record year for A*-B grades, up nearly 4% on last year’s results. Many students were thrilled with their grades and will now move on to places at university, start their careers or go onto apprenticeships. Student Oliver Stacey (pictured inset right) was stunned by his A*, A*, B grades in Creative Writing, Media and Religious Studies. Oliver will study Multimedia Journalism at Bournemouth University, where he achieved a £1500 scholarship for his high A Level grades. Jenny Lorimer (pictured above centre) was also delighted as
she gained A*, A, A, B in her subjects of Extended Project Qualification, Biology, Maths and Chemistry. She commented, ‘Being at Itchen was really good, I loved every minute of it.’ Jenny will be studying Biomedical Sciences at the University of Birmingham. Commenting on the results, Assistant Principal Tim Proud summarised results day by saying, ‘We are very pleased with the college results and proud of the students’ hard work. We wish all students the best of luck in the future.’

ur Uniformed Services Academy ended the Summer term by successfully competing in several competitions. In June teams took on the British Army College Challenge, facing other local colleges from Southampton, Fareham, Portsmouth, Chichester, Totton and the Isle of Wight. The challenge involved teambuilding exercises such as a 2.4KM race, obstacle courses, a general knowledge quiz and sports activities. The competition was run over two days with several Itchen teams taking part. On the first

day Itchen took both 1st and 2nd place overall, with student Emily Astbury also being awarded Best Individual Female. On the second day a new Itchen team competed and took 1st place once again, a fantastic victory for the college.

In July, the Uniformed Services students went on to compete in the Junior Leaders’ Field Gun Competition, which took place at HMS Collingwood in Fareham.

ur Social Sciences & Care learning area is high achieving, with a continued track record of student success across all of its courses. In addition to great academic results, last year’s students had an excellent time fundraising for the local community and it’s something the learning area is continuing this year. Itchen’s Sociology students will continue to collect donations for local women’s refuges after a large discussion last year in classes about how women deal with their health needs when homeless. The result was a large college-wide campaign to collect products to donate to local women’s shelters. Our Care students will also be kicking off the year by considering how they will work

with the SCRATCH (Southampton City and Region Act to Combat Hardship) appeal. This involves collecting donations for families or individuals in Southampton who are disadvantaged, particularly in the Christmas holidays. Our Psychology students are also working with the Alzheimer’s Society. They will be doing a ‘memory walk’ to raise money for the charity as they study the effects of Alzheimer’s in their classes. We’re looking forward to seeing the results of both their charity work and academic work this new college year.

s we enter another sports season, our Academy of Sport teams will have to compete even harder to beat their fantastic results from last term.
the British Schools and Colleges championships.
Our ladies footballers will be looking to retain their national title this year. They have now held the title of ECFA National Champions for three years in a row and will try and make it to four.
The men’s basketballers also came out on top last term, winning the Association of Colleges Elite Cup competition. It was the first time a team from outside London or the North West had ever won the trophy and coach Matt Guymon also received the title ‘Coach of the Year’ from the EABL for the second year in a row.

hroughout the summer Itchen’s sculpture Abracazebra, designed and made as part of Marwell’s Zany Zebras trail, has been featured in The Marlands in Southampton city centre. In total Marwell’s Zany Zebras trail involved 150 sculptures scattered throughout the city, with 50 large zebras sponsored by organisations and businesses alongside 100 smaller zebras which were designed and created by 100 schools and colleges. Our Essential Skills students had the task of designing and
painting the sculpture and they worked incredibly hard to produce a fantastic piece of art. Abracazebra has had lots of visitors throughout the summer where it was showcased in the Atrium of The Marlands shopping centre. Our Essential Skills group also had the opportunity to visit the zebra ‘out in the wild’ whilst the trail was still running.

We were thrilled to be a part of the trail and are looking forward to Abracazebra returning to the college in late October, where students, staff and guests will be able to enjoy the sculpture for many years to come!
