Compared to its predecessor, Windows 7 takes up less disk space and uses fewer processes, allowing lower powered computers to effectively use it with less instances of the system locking up, crashing and freezing. 3. It is lighter on laptops’ battery lives. Windows 7 also cuts the power to unneeded components when it goes into sleep/hibernation mode, increasing the battery life on laptops as much as 15%. 4. It makes it easier to find items saved on the hard disk. Windows 7 offers the new Libraries feature, which lets you see and access all documents within the Documents Library. 5. The improved desktop search engine provides results faster. 6. Windows 7’s improved interface makes personal and business computing more efficient. Specifically, it makes it easier to work with active applications and open files, using mouse over thumbnails and other desperately needed shortcuts: a. Thumbnails display on mouse over, with a single left click making the thumbnail the active window. b. A single right click over an icon bar displays a list of recently opened documents. c. The Snap Feature allows you to line up two documents side-by-side, by just dragging the windows to opposite sides of the desktop. 7. HomeGroup that is designed to offer some features of a local domain, but be easier for the average user to configure. Three Not-So-Great Features Offsetting some of the great features Windows 7 has to offer, three not-so-great features include: 1. The Problem Steps Recorder, which creates an automated illustration of a problem that can be emailed to tech support, is only available on the Professional version of Windows 7. 2. Not all hardware will transition when using the upgrade option. Many printers, scanners and other external devices must be uninstalled and then reinstalled after the conversion to Windows 7. These peripheral devices are not necessary included in the Windows Compatibility Report so each one should be checked at the manufacturer’s website. 3. An operating system upgrade can be a daunting task. The bad news is that, unlike Windows Vista, Windows XP requires a fresh install, which subsequently, requires that all hardware and software be reinstalled. The new Windows 7 Operating System is out and we’ve been asked by several people whether or not they should consider upgrading. Windows 7 is essentially a sleeker, trimmed down version of the Windows Vista operating system, although many computer users are still not sure if making the upgrade will be of benefit, especially those that made the transition from Windows XP to Windows Vista, only to find themselves with a heap of problems. So, is the transition for you? First, let’s evaluate the hardware requirements. The Windows 7 requirements are the same as Vista. It requires a 1 GHz or faster processor, 1GB of RAM (2 GB for 64-Bit) and 16 GB of hard disk space (20 GB for 64-Bit). You can check your system properties by right clicking My Computer and selecting properties. Alternatively, you can see that your system meets the minimum requirements by downloading and running the Windows Upgrade Advisor, available on the Microsoft website (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1B544E90-76594BD9-9E51-2497C146AF15&displaylang=en). In addition to The Windows Advisor checking your system’s available resources, it also offers a compatibility report that will check your installed software for compatibility. This helps to ensure that your programs will migrate to the new operating system without issue. As a rule of thumb, programs that will run on Windows Vista will run on Windows 7, but it is worth taking a moment to confirm. Some Impressive Features Windows 7 offers some impressive features compared to Windows Vista. The top seven notable changes are: (continued on page 4)

Social Networking: Five Easy Steps Will Get You Started

Now that you have learned about social networking and investigated the benefits that these sites have to offer, it’s time to jump in and get started! Step 1: Carefully Create a Complete Profile First you need to register for an account. This is easy and usually just a matter of completing a short form, posting your email address and selecting a password. Once this is done the website will send you an email with a confirmation link. Click on that link and jump in with both feet! Once your account is established take a few moments to complete the different profile fields that each site makes available. Be sure to add your website address in, along with a short biography about you, your products or your services. These profile fields appear when someone views your profile or performs a search. Next, upload a photo of yourself, your office or your company logo. This picture will be present each time you make a post or comment on a post. Step 2: Join Groups Search each website for groups that are similar in nature to your product or service. When you find groups of interest click the link to become a fan or to join the group.
