Summerhill Community Garden May - November 2020 PEACE • FRESH FOOD • MUSIC A 5000 square-foot collaborative green space built for youth activities and community events.

Summerhill Garden Project Overview The Summerhill Community Garden Project began as a outreach initiative with within our COMMUNITY pillar with the purpose of transforming a vacant lot into the format of a community garden and classroom built to accommodate a sense of peace and community across social-economic boundaries. The Summerhill Community Garden has brought people out of their shell and offered the youth new opportunities towards personal and professional goals. Summer workshops have motivated the youth to get out of their comfort zone and be a voice for the community. Assigned responsibilities at the garden has taught set discipline and encourage a willingness to be apart of a community together with adult and youth volunteers.

Project Goals Bring the community of Summerhill together through community volunteering. Honor and acknowledge the historical cultural presence and contributions to the community. Engage residents, including youth under 20, in wellness, technoogy, and culture. Develop communications, leadership and other transferable job-ready skills in the residents, especially in youth under 20. Support the Summerhill priority themes of economic development and community building.

Our volunteers have shared the joys and wonders of gardening while learning new things and safely socializing.

In modern times people do not talk to each other which creates inequality, mental health issues, social isolation, division, and lack of access to opportunities. Since it was founded in 2012, I TALK TO STRANGERS has partnered with organizations supporting the mission of uniting people through conversation.

The garden is looking great. Glad to help wherever I can. I will mention your organization at the NPU-V meeting and encourage the residents in the other neighborhoods to come see the garden and learn about your organization.
