About

ISSP

ISSP About ISSP Association ISSP is a non-commercial education and networking platform for photographers in Latvia and internationally, that works to offer high-quality alternative education for young photographers and to encourage the crossborder exchange of ideas in the art of photography. Since its establishment in 2006, ISSP has yearly run the International Summer School of Photography, curated a number of exhibitions, produced six catalogues, initiated several international education and exchange projects, established a contemporary photography education programme in Latvia, and, most importantly, gathered a thriving community of emerging photographers in Latvia and abroad. The International Summer School of Photography Taking place in Latvia yearly since 2006 (since 2011 - in the village of Pelči nearby Kuldīga), the International Summer School of Photography aims to support the advancement of talented young photographers and to promote international networking among emerging photographers around the world. The Summer School is designed for professionals, students of photography and art and artists working with photography. ISSP offers six advanced masterclasses led by renowned international photography masters in a wonderful setting that makes close interaction between all the participants an integral part of the event. During the eight days of the School, each of the students produces a personal photography project under the guidance of their workshop mentor for the exhibition, which opens in Kuldīga on the last day of the School. The aim is to broaden the artistic and personal vision of the participating photographers, who come from all corners of the world - our previous students are from over 30 countries, 5 continents. International Summer School of Photography 2012 took place from 4-12 August 2012 and hosted 72 photographers from 22 countries of the world, who participated in six masterclasses led by excellent international photography masters. For more information on ISSP 2012 workshops, see next page. This planner features a small selection of the ISSP 2012 final works. The complete collection of participants’ projects is available on vimeo: www.vimeo.com/issp/issp-2012-final-works and at www.issp.lv ISSP 2013 will take place on 3-11 August 2013 in the same location. The applications are usually announced around end-March, until early May. For more information on ISSP and the application process, please see our website. www.issp.lv

ISSP About ISSP 2012 workshops W 1

Workshop No.1 A personal approach in photography: From diary to fiction, by Arja Hyytiäinen The participants of Finnish contemporary photographer Arja Hyytiäinen’s workshop focused on translating emotion into images, feeling and experiencing life through photography, seeking and questioning, trying to see behind the visual reality. They tried to develop their individual languages of expression, creating fictional and experience-based stories using everyday material in the form of a diary. Each participant worked in the surroundings of Kuldīga around a person or storyline that was most important to them right now.

W 2

Workshop No.2 Yes, but what does it mean? Creating concepts, exploring ideas, by Phillip Toledano This class by conceptual artist and photographer Phil Toledano (US) explored the process of generating ideas and refining concepts in the pursuit of a successful photographic series. Through individual and group assignments, discussions and critique of current work and interests, students examined the strengths of their ideas and intentions, developing skills to better conceptualize satisfying and sustaining projects and realize the potential of their ideas and photography.

W 3

Workshop No.3 Finding your photographic voice: Latvia contemporary, by Jodi Bieber The workshop of award-winning photojournalist Jodi Bieber (South Africa) focused on understanding the process of storytelling with a personal vision – exploring ways to incorporate a personal vision and voice into photographic work. Participants had to think of something they felt passionate about, that they felt was important for them to learn, understand and incorporate it into the theme ‘Latvia contemporary’. The topic was broad, giving students the freedom to create an essay that suited their interest. The aim of the workshop was to confront and help deal with the fears, strengths, anxieties and weaknesses of the participants as photographers and people.

ISSP About ISSP 2012 workshops Workshop no.4 Portraits: A practical guide to the art of seeing, by Hellen van Meene In this workshop, the aim of renowned Dutch portrait artist Hellen van Meene was to inspire her students and help them in making the right decisions when creating their photos. Within the field of portraiture, the students worked with strangers, course-mates, self-portraits, as well as whatever interested them and brought them forward at that moment.

W 4

Workshop No.5 W 5 Editing workshop: The finishing touches, by Christian Caujolle The workshop by founder of the French “Agence VU”, Christian Caujolle (France), concentrated on the editing of participants’ existing bodies of work. In group debates and individual conversations with the teacher, they had to define whether the purpose of their work is a narrative and what the best way of publishing the material is - a book, a very limited artist book, an exhibition, or a projection. The question was not "is it a good or a bad photograph?", but rather, what is it that we want to tell, to transmit, to provoke, to share with our images, and how can the planned result be achieved? The workshop helped the participants to take a step in the direction of completing their projects. Workshop No.6 W 6 Middle Town: Picturing the Unspectacular, by Bas Vroege and Hans van der Meer Mentored by a Dutch tandem of curator Bas Vroege and photographer Hans van der Meer, the workshop was the second part of a project started in early 2012 as part of the EU-Turkey cultural managers exchange programme “Tandem”. Over a period of five months, 12 participating photographers from Latvia, Turkey, Estonia, Germany, Italy and Poland were working on their individual projects under the common theme of “Middle Town: Picturing the Unspectacular”, trying to reflect the meaning of the mundane things in mundane places that are usually considered ‘unspectacular’. The workshop focused on reviewing and editing the participants’ work. Each of them created a book dummy, some also worked in video format. More information: www.middletownproject.net

Kuldīga About Kuldīga Kuldīga is a creative city. Every visitor to this ancient town of Courland (Kurzeme) can feel and notice it. Located on the River Venta above the Rumba waterfall, Kuldīga has been witness to Europe’s diverse history and heritage. Kuldīga is proud of its distinctive architecture and the River Venta with its widest waterfall in Europe behind an old arched red-brick bridge. On the basis of its historical and cultural diversity, unique in the Baltic states, Kuldīga has been awarded the European Heritage Label. Kuldīga was once the capital of the ancient Duchy of Courland, ruled by the economically powerful Duke Jacob. The Duchy was one of the smallest European nations to colonize overseas territories, establishing short-lived outposts on the Caribbean island of Tobago and at the mouth of the Gambia River in Africa. In 1795, the last Duke, Peter von Biron, ceded the Duchy to the Russian Empire. The full ensemble of Kuldīga’s Historical Centre was established in the 19th century during the Empire of the Russian Tsars. Despite wars and fires, the town’s wooden buildings, dating back to the 17th century, are still standing, and today the air of a typical 17th century European market town can still be felt around the Town Hall Square. With its unique natural attractions, rich historical and cultural heritage, Kuldīga captures the hearts of creative people from their very first visit. Creative projects in Kuldīga municipality aim to encourage people to show respect and become familiar our heritage, identifying with and building upon it. In the coming years, the creative industries will be important not just for the prosperity of our town, but also in enabling and encouraging Latvians to put culture and creativity at the centre of their lives. It is the time to recognise the growing success of creative projects in Kuldīga. The creative industries must move from the margins to the mainstream of economic and policy thinking as we look to create jobs in the future. Kuldīga District Council welcomes cooperation with creative people in many disciplines – be it artists, designers, engineers, entrepreneurs or business managers. We believe this professional weekly planner will guide your paths in the right direction and document your thoughts and ideas for achieving success. Looking forward to meeting you in Kuldīga.

Art Academy

Art Academy About the Art Academy of Latvia The Art Academy of Latvia was founded in 1919 by one of the first renowned Latvian painters Vilhelms Purvītis (1872–1945), who strongly advocated the necessity to develop Latvian art and also became the first rector of the Academy. The Art Academy of Latvia, based in Riga, is an institution of higher education in art, design and art history. The Academy is dedicated to excellence in teaching and scientific research, as well as in carrying out top quality art and design projects tailored to users’ needs. The students of the Academy study traditional art techniques of the respective art area, specialize in the application of traditional and untraditional materials, as well as develop creative skills related to use of the new media. The modern approach to learning is strengthened by the studio form of artist training that helps to organize individually-tailored studies built upon direct and collegiate cooperation between professors and students. In addition to academic learning, the students of the Art Academy gain valuable experience by actively taking part in study-related and extra-curricular art projects of local and international scope. The Art Academy of Latvia offers opportunities for studies of art, audio-visual media, design and art history in Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Doctor of Arts programmes. The studies are offered by fourteen departments arranged in five faculties led by elected professors of the Academy, who are established artists and recognized experts in their respective fields: The Faculty of Visual Arts includes the Departments of Painting, Graphic Art, Textile Art and Drawing. The Faculty of Visual Plastic Arts includes the Departments of Sculpture, Ceramics and Glass Art. The Faculty of Design includes the Departments of Functional Design, Metal Design, Fashion Design and Environment Art. The Faculty of Audio-Visual Media includes the Departments of Visual Communication and Stage Design. The Faculty of History and Theory of Arts includes the Departments of History and Theory of Visual Art and Culture, Restoration and Humanities.

Art Academy About the Technology Transfer Office The Technology Transfer Office at the Art Academy of Latvia was established in 2009 to facilitate knowledge transfer through the licensing of inventions resulting from academic research to industry. The TTO provides mentoring, networking and training to academic researchers and scientists, which enables them to bring their art works and design closer to commercialization. In the technology transfer process, our goal is to advise researchers and students on the marketing of intellectual property rights and to identify, protect, use and defend intellectual property rights. Technology transfer at the Art Academy is a process of exchange, application and the co-creation of new knowledge created in collaboration between academic entities, non-academic organizations and individuals, such as: Commissioned research - research carried out by the Art Academy at the request of other organizations, including national and local governments and enterprises. Joint research - research carried out by faculty members of the Art Academy in collaboration with external organizations, including national and local governments and enterprises, who share human and financial resources in a research project. Knowledge dissemination - the process by which knowledge is acquired, mediated, produced, and transformed in and between different organizations. Licensing agreements - contractual agreements signed between the Art Academy and industries that allow private companies to use specific registered community design invented by the Art Academy. Most of our partners are organizations, including national and local governments, and enterprises working in the creative industries.
