"Look at every path closely and deliberately. Try it as many times as you think necessary. Then ask yourself alone, one question... Does this path have a heart? If it does, the path is good; if it doesn't it is of no use. Both paths lead nowhere; but one has a heart, the other doesn't. One makes for a joyful journey; as long as you follow it, you are one with it. The other will make you curse your life. One makes you strong; the other weakens you." — Carlos Castaneda, from The Teachings of Don Juan

About

ISSP

ISSP About ISSP ISSP is a non-commercial platform for contemporary photography, offering alternative education and networking programmes for emerging photographers since 2006. ISSP runs the International Summer School of Photography, ISSP International Masterclass, ISSP School local education programmes, the photobook festival Self Publish Riga, and other projects and events, gathering a thriving community of emerging photographers in Latvia and internationally. The ISSP Gallery – the only independent exhibition space for contemporary photography in Latvia – was established in Riga in 2018.

The International Summer School of Photography Taking place in Kuldīga, Latvia, ISSP is an immersive summer camp bringing together emerging photographers, students of photography and art, and artists working with photography from all around the world. The summer school offers six advanced workshops by renowned photography tutors in a unique setting that makes close interaction between the participants an integral part of the event. Each of the students works on a photography project during the week; the results are presented at the ISSP final exhibition in Kuldīga. ISSP 2018 took place from 28 July to 5 August 2018 in Pelči, Kuldīga, hosting 72 participants from over 30 countries. This planner features a small selection of the ISSP 2018 final works. The complete collection of participants’ projects is available at www.issp.lv

Kuldīga Kuldīga and its Arts Scene Kuldīga is an ancient town located 150 km from the capital Riga; many visitors believe that it is Latvia’s most charming town. The magic of medieval architecture, beautiful nature, regular art and culture events provide an excellent opportunity to escape the haste and routine of the big city, and to find a place of inspiration and creativity. Kuldīga has always attracted artists, filmmakers, designers and photographers as a location for their creative work. The presence of art and culture activities is appreciated by the Municipality as a crucial impulse for the town’s social and economic development, and as a way of presenting Kuldīga to an international audience. The modern library with its exhibition space in the Art House, an open-air cinema, Art School, Kuldīga Artists’ Residence, and the International Summer School of Photography are just a few of the initiatives in the field of arts and culture supported by the local government. The Department of Creative Industries of the Art Academy of Latvia is also on its way to be established in Kuldīga.
