Dot’s Message
Chaghteraght Dot
hat a start to 2012! At 11.30pm on W New Year’s Eve we opened our main
Dot with archers Aalin & Kirsten George at the Olympic stamps launch.
Post Office in Douglas to launch our London 2012 Olympic Games stamps designed by Sir Paul Smith, the iconic British fashion designer. We are thrilled with the stamps and congratulate our printer Lowe Martin of Canada who did such a fantastic job in achieving perfection. Our customers loved the designs - in particular the Collector’s Book - and we hope the stamps serve as a good omen for Mark Cavendish (the cycling ‘Manx Missile’) to set the Olympics alight by winning the Men’s Cycling Road Race on the Mall – the first event of the 2012 Games. Leading up to Christmas we promoted a competition for a family of four to win a magical weekend at Thomas Land staying at the lovely Drayton Manor Hotel. The ticket was drawn out by our Chairman Mr Geoff Corkish MBE MHK and the lucky winner was six-year-old Lee Conde from Onchan. He and his twin brother Alex, together with Mum and Dad, enjoyed the all-expensespaid trip. Lee correctly stated that Isle of Man Stamps & Coins issued Thomas the Tank Engine stamps back in August 1995. Isle of Man Stamps & Coins received more than 1000 entries for the competition. We would like to thank the Drayton Manor Theme Park and Flybe for helping to make the trip so successful.
The Isle of Man was chosen by soldiers from the Duke of Gloucester Regiment as the venue for a number of ingenuity tasks, involving travelling to and from the Island by unconventional means. Once here they had to mail a postcard and take photographs to prove they had arrived. Maxine Cannon, our Sales & Marketing Manager, met the soldiers at 6.00am on the 15th November at Regent Street Post Office, Douglas and took pictures of the winners - including Private James Brennan who won the award for the individual who gave most to the Exercise overall. Well done lads (and Maxine)!
This year is going to be filled with exciting stamp issues as, in addition to the Olympics, 2012 marks the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen and the anniversary of the Titanic. In addition, we have commissioned local artist Tracey Dean to produce six beautiful watercolours of minor Lighthouses of the Island for our ‘Harbour Lights’ issue which will be available from the 2nd April, which we hope will be especially popular. On behalf of all the staff may I wish you a very healthy and peaceful 2012 and I hope you continue to enjoy collecting Isle of Man stamps and coins.
STOP PRESS The Titanic Stamp Issue – April 2012 Please note that it has been necessary to change the issue date of this stamp release to the 2nd April 2012. You may have read in our autumn Stamp News that it was originally programmed for late February. If you have completed and returned our Future Issues order form, do not worry, your order will be processed and despatched for the new issue date, or by 8th May if you have also ordered subsequent issues from the next standing order despatch. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused, we hope you enjoy the stamps.

NEWS AND SPECIAL ITEMS
Your Olympic Year Starts Here… Isle of Man Stamps & Coins is pleased to present a most prestigious stamp issue, inspired by the London 2012 Olympic Games. Designed by internationally renowned British designer Sir Paul Smith, this very special set of stamps went on sale at 00.01 a.m. on January 1st 2012 at the Island’s main Post Office in Douglas – a ‘world first’. We are hugely honoured and thrilled that Sir Paul Smith agreed to design our Olympic collection. He aspired to design a truly positive and colourful collection with a strong graphic style of design something we certainly feel he has achieved with this iconic set, we hope you will agree. Sir Paul Smith’s introduction into fashion was accidental. His ambition was to become a professional racing cyclist until aged seventeen years he was involved in a road accident. Three months in hospital followed and when he came out he knew he wanted to do something creative. With the encouragement from his girlfriend Pauline Denyer (now wife), and a small amount of savings, he opened a tiny shop in Nottingham in 1970. He started to take evening classes, studying tailoring and by 1976 Paul had shown his first menswear collection in Paris. Today there are fourteen collections including ready-to-wear for men and women, accessories, shoes and junior. Paul Smith has seventeen shops in the UK and sells to sixty six countries in the rest of the world with shops in Paris, Milan, New York, Hong Kong, Korea, Kuwait, U.A.E. and Japan. Paul continues to be an integral part of the company; he is both designer and chairman and is continually involved in every aspect of the business.

LONDON 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES Designed by Sir Paul Smith • Issue Date – 01.01.12
The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of seven stamps to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic Games. An event of the magnitude of the Olympic Games – the greatest show on Earth - attracts leading figures from different areas of expertise and the Isle of Man Post Office is delighted that the respected and iconic international designer Paul Smith has demonstrated his passion for sport. The prestigious collection of stamps that he has designed will help ensure that the memory of the Games remains in the mind long after the last medal has been awarded. The London 2012 Games is actually the third time that London will host the Games. In 1908 London stepped in when the original choice of Rome had to be abandoned after Mount Vesuvius erupted in 1906, while the UK’s capital city also hosted the Games in 1948. The official Olympic motto is ‘Citius, Altius, Fortius’, a Latin phrase that means ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’, something that will be very important to the 10,500 competitors from 205 National Olympic Committees expected to take part in the London 2012 Olympic Games. There are twenty six Olympic Sports which will be held in thirty four venues across the UK. Some of the UK’s most well known sites will feature events with stunning locations such as Hampton Court Palace, Horse Guards Parade and The Mall providing backdrops to the action. DESIGNER SIR PAUL SMITH “My life changed at the age of eleven when my father bought me a pale blue Paramount racing bike. It was purchased from one of his friends who was a cyclist and member of the local cycle club, The Beeston Road Club. He suggested that I should join the club and that perhaps I would enjoy going out on what they called ‘club runs.’ During these club runs at the weekends we would go to the countryside of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. I quickly enjoyed the freedom the bike gave me and there were no parents around! I loved the bikes, the freedom, the wind in your face, the challenge of the sometimes very hard rides, which included lots of hills. At the age of twelve I started racing and got a ‘schoolboy licence’. I learnt a lot about team work, keeping fit and realised I had a competitive spirit. Later on I became a Junior and had dreams of becoming a Professional. This would never have
happened as I simply wasn’t good enough or brave enough, but it was a lovely dream. Apart from road riding, I also rode on the track. There was a small one in my home town of Nottingham and also the famous track in London called Herne Hill; I rode on both of these. More recently I rode on the Velodrome in Manchester, which was fantastic but seriously frightening! The new London track looks amazing. I imagine it will be a very fast surface and also provide a great atmosphere for the audience. It’s a real honour to be asked to design these stamps. I’ve tried to make them positive and colourful with a strong graphic style of design. I hope you like them.”
MINIATURE SHEET
The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this gleaming new cycling miniature sheet to accompany our set of seven stamps celebrating the London 2012 Olympic Games. ISLE OF MAN PROFESSIONAL CYCLING STAR MARK CAVENDISH MBE Mark Cavendish from the Isle of Man will start as one of the favourites in the cycling events, a sprinter whose single minded approach has made him the most feared man in the field - we asked Mark to focus on the day: “The Olympics are big, they’re in London and they’re in front of my home crowd so of course I’d love to do well but there is a lot of racing between now and then. It’s the first Cycling medal on offer at the Olympics and it would be pretty special to win, a once in a lifetime opportunity. I have already inspected the route and I am confident it provides me and my GB Team mates with the best possible opportunity of a victory. I am certainly motivated to win in front of my home crowd and become Olympic Champion. My great friend and cycling enthusiast, Sir Paul Smith, has designed the Olympic stamps for the Isle of Man Post Office which includes two cycling stamps and I see this as a good omen for Team GB - we will be ready to take up the challenge!”

58p stamp This photograph of the Queen was taken when she attended a flm premiere in 1955. That year her Christmas Message, broadcast live from her study at Sandringham, focused on the Commonwealth. She said: ‘Great opportunities lie before us. Indeed a large part of the world looks to the Commonwealth for a lead. We have already gone far towards discovering for ourselves how different nations, from North and South, from East and West, can live together in friendly brotherhood, pooling the resources of each for the beneft of all. Every one of us can also help in this great adventure, for just as the Commonwealth is made up of different nations, so those nations are made up of individuals. The greater the enterprise the more important our personal contribution.’ £1.10 stamp When this offcial photograph was taken of the Queen in 1968, she had already visited Brazil and Chile. It was the year in which civil rights leader Martin Luther King was shot dead in Memphis and the Queen focused her Christmas broadcast from Buckingham Palace on the theme of brotherhood. She said: ‘Christmas is a Christian festival, which celebrates the birth of the Prince of Peace. At times it is almost hidden by the merry making and tinsel, but the essential message of Christmas is still that we all belong to the great brotherhood of man. This idea is not limited to the Christian faith. Philosophers and prophets have concluded that peace is better than war, love is better than hate and that mankind can only fnd progress in friendship and cooperation. Many ideas are being questioned today, but these great truths will continue to shine out as the light of hope in the darkness of intolerance and inhumanity.’ 38p stamp Taken in 1979, the international Year of the Child, when thousands of refugees fed the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, this picture features the Queen on horseback during the Trooping of the Colour. That year she visited Tanzania, Malawi, Botswana and Zambia. In her Christmas message she said: ‘This year people all over the world have been asked to give particular thought to the special needs of sick and handicapped children, to the hungry and homeless and to those in trouble or distress wherever they may be found. It is an unhappy coincidence that political and economic forces have made this an exceptionally diffcult and tragic year for many families and children in several parts of the world - but particularly in South East Asia. The situation has created a desperately serious challenge and I am glad to know

that so many people of the Commonwealth have responded with wonderful generosity and kindness.’ 68p stamp In 1982, the year of the Falklands War, the Queen undertook two Commonwealth tours - of Canada and Australia and the Pacifc. She is photographed here in Tuvalu where she and Prince Philip were borne aloft in ceremonial litters. That year her Christmas message marked the 50th anniversary of the frst yuletide broadcast and was flmed for the frst time in the library at Windsor Castle. She said: ‘The poet John Donne said: “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” That is the message of the Commonwealth and it is also the Christian message. Christ attached supreme importance to the individual and he amazed the world in which he lived by making it clear that the unfortunate and the underprivileged had an equal place in the Kingdom of Heaven with the rich and powerful. But he also taught that man must do his best to live in harmony with man and to love his neighbours.’ 37p stamp This portrait was taken by photographer Terry O’Neill in 1990, the year that the Queen celebrated her mother’s 90th birthday and the christening of her youngest grandchild. But the threat of war in the Gulf dominated her Christmas message as she paid tribute to servicemen around the world. She said: ‘I want, therefore, to say thank you today to the men and women who, day in and day out, carry on their daily life in difficultand dangerous circumstances. By just getting on with the job, they are getting the better of those who want to harm our way of life. Let us think of them this Christmas, wherever they are in the world, and pray that their resolution remains undiminished. It is they and their kind who, by resisting the bully and the tyrant, ensure that we live in the sort of world in which we can celebrate this season safely with our families.’£1.82 stamp The Queen stayed closer to home in 2008 the year her son, Prince Charles, celebrated his 60th birthday – visiting Slovenia and Slovakia. She is photographed at the Derby at Epsom racecourse that summer, one of her favourite events of the season. That year her Christmas message was refective. She said: ‘In this 90th year since the end of the First World War, the last survivors recently commemorated the service and enormous sacrifce of their own generation. Their successors in theatres such as Iraq and Afghanistan are still to be found in harm’s way in the service of others. For their loved ones, the worry will never cease until they are safely home. In such times as these we can all learn some lessons from the past. We might begin to see things in a new perspective. And certainly, we begin to ask ourselves where it is that we can fnd lasting happiness. Over the years, those who have seemed to me to be the most happy, contented and fulflled have always been the people who have lived the most outgoing and unselfsh lives; the kind of people who are generous with their talents or their time. I think we have a huge amount to learn from individuals such as these.’

NEW RELEASE • Issue Date – 20.02.12
The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of five stamps which feature the artwork of William Hoggatt. Alan Kelly of Mannin Collections writes: William Hoggatt was born 1st September 1879 at 10 Garnett Street, Lancaster, son of James Hoggatt, a joiner, and Margaret Ann Hoggatt née Stalker. Hoggatt was educated in Lancaster, where his artistic talent won him a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, London, which he declined on the grounds that ‘he wanted to work freely’. He then worked as an apprentice for a local firm of stained-glass manufacturers, but also continued his art studies at the Storey Institute, Lancaster. Whilst there Herbert L. Storey, the son of the founder of the Institute, noticed the quality of Hoggatt’s work and paid for him to study art at the L’Academie Julian, Paris, from 1901-1903, under Jean Paul Laurens. On his return to England, Hoggatt rented a cottage at Caton, near Lancaster, and started to paint full-time. In 1906 he worked for a period of time at the Tate Gallery, London, and whilst there met a young man called Leonard Archer who invited Hoggatt to stay at his home at Chalfont St. Giles. It was there he met Leonard’s sister, Dazine, and by the time Hoggatt left she had agreed to marry him. Both their parents were opposed to the intended marriage so the couple decided to elope to the Isle of Man – a place Hoggatt had heard much about in Lancaster. Early in 1907 he arrived in the Island and moved into ‘Glendown’, Port St. Mary. He then sent for Dazine and shortly after her arrival they were married on 20th April, 1907 at Kirk Christ, Rushen. Working in oils, watercolours and pastels Hoggatt spent the next fifty-four years painting scenes throughout the TECHNICAL DETAILS

Island. He exhibited from 1904 at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute, Royal Cambrian Academy, Glasgow Institute and at many other art institutions, including overseas. In 1925 he was elected a full member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and was later a member of the Liverpool Academy and the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists. His first one-man exhibition was held at the Hampstead Art Gallery, London in 1920 entitled Tone Harmonies and contained sixty of his paintings of the Island. Most of the pictures sold at the exhibition, including six which were purchased by a collector from South Africa. After this exhibition Hoggatt started to receive the recognition he deserved and his work was reproduced in all the leading art journals, including The Studio and The Connoisseur. The Studio magazine said of him – ‘William Hoggatt has chosen the artistic solitude of an Island full of natural beauty. His work shows a constant passionate striving for the wonders of light, colour, texture and the whole overpowering poetry of landscape’. In 1926 the Hoggatts moved from ‘Glendown’, Port St. Mary to ‘The Darrag’, Port Erin, overlooking the bay, where they stayed for the rest of their lives. Locally, Hoggatt exhibited at the Isle of Man Artists’ Exhibitions in the 1930s and at the Mannin Art Group Exhibitions in the 1950s, of which he was a vicepresident. In 1934 he won a competition to design a stained-glass window for the Manx Museum, to commemorate T.E. Brown, the Manx national poet.

COINS AND COLLECTABLES
Isle of Man Treasury Coins Cooinaghyn Tashtey Vannin Miscellaneous Tokens & Checks M. J. Southall, MBE, MCGI New designs for Manx decimal coins were introduced in 1980. They reflected many aspects of Island life and its history.
2p Coin: A familiar resident of the Isle of Man, the chough is a member of the crow family. The stylised bird shown on this coin is derived from a Viking stone carving on a background of Hiberno-Norse decoration of incised bronze-work of the 13th Century. It is found mostly in the region around Port Erin in the south west of the Island. 5p coin: The four horned sheep surrounded by oval brooch ornamentation of the 9th century. The ram is rendered in semi-stylised form as was depicted in Viking wood carvings. 10p Coin: This version of the peregrine falcon is rendered in the manner of a Viking wood carving. The background ornamentation has been derived from Viking jewellery found in Manx hoards, including those containing silver coins.
p Coin: The herring on this coin shows it with stylised scales based on a silver niello ornament dating from the 11th to 12th centuries. The patterning is tracery based on Norse Medieval strap work.

1p Coin: The Isle of Man is famous for its tailless cat, known as a Manxie. Although there are many different markings of the Manx cat, two basic tailless types are found on the Island - the ‘rumpy’ with no tail at all and the ‘stumpy’ with just a hint of a tail. Its true origin is unknown but it is believed that it was as a result of a mutation many generations ago. One legend is based on the Manx Traa-dy-Liooar, meaning time enough. It reflects back to the time when Noah was calling all the animals into the Ark just before the great inundation. When it came to the turn of the Manx Cats, Traa-dy-Liooar kicked in and they were the last to respond to the urgent call. Unfortunately, they left it just a little too late and their tails were cut off when the Ark door was slammed shut.
50p Coin: This specially built replica longship was sailed from Norway to Mann as part of the Tynwald Millennium celebrations in 1979. The stylised circular triskeles was used as the Millennium logo. The longship is now housed as a prominent exhibit in the House of Manannan museum in Peel. £1 Coin: The very first £1coin was issued by the Isle of Man in 1978 but did not form part of the 1980 set. More details about this coin in a future article. Obverse: All the 1980 coins show the first profile portrait of the Queen by Arnold Machin, as used on the first Manx decimal coins of 1971. Details of the Island’s later decimal coins will be featured in future issues of Stamp and Coin News.
