Welcome to our Summer 2025 Newsletter

Hello Friends of Isle of Man Stamps & Coins

Yesterday concluded Manx National Week with our open-air sitting of the Court of Tynwald, the crowds came out, the sun was shining and the Tynwald Fairground was packed with stalls and keeping up traditions that have stood the test of time. It does not seem that long since we celebrated the Millennium of Tynwald. 5th July 2029 sees 1,050 years of the oldest continuous parliament in the world.

We have had a busy early summer, digital versions of our Triskels and Space-themed stamps now reside on the surface of the Moon. It has been a journey of around four years to bring it all together but we never let a spacecraft and lunar module deter us!

Our new issues contained within this newsletter are a celebration of our culture and heritage. Tourism Posters, Manx Coins and Manx Farm Animals to tie in with Manx National Farmers Union who work tirelessly to promote and support the Southern and

THE AGE OF THE SEA KINGS

Royal Manx agricultural shows. We are very happy through the issue to raise awareness for Greener Grass whose aim is to provide wellbeing support to our farmers across the Island.

Enjoy and I hope you have a lovely summer (or mild winter for our friends in the southern hemisphere) Best wishes

Maxine and all the team at Stamps & Coins

We were delighted to be able to collaborate with the World Championship Viking Longboat Races 2025 in association with IFGL, held annually in Peel, Isle of Man. Every year teams go head-tohead to race across Peel Harbour. It’s a great charity fundraising event and it was fitting we could support with our amazing Age of the Sea Kings stamps-themed certificates and prizes.

The Age of the Sea Kings: The Medieval Kingdom of Man and the Isles, stamp issue was created with Manx artist Juan Moore and Canadian professor Andrew McDonald and highlights some of the Norse rules in the Isle of Man’s history. Stamps and a range of collectables are available to buy iomstamps.com/collections/seakings

We were delighted that we were able to partner with Rushen Heritage Trust to host the launch of our new stamp issue featuring the work of worldrenowned photographer Leonard McCombe. The launch took place at Rushen Heritage Centre in Port Erin, and brought together members of Leonard’s family, including his son, Clark, and daughter-in-law Beverly, who live on the farm on Long Island, New York, which Leonard bought in 1960.

Maxine Cannon, General Manager Stamps & Coins for Isle of Man Post Office, said: ‘With Leonard being raised in Port Erin, we wanted to launch the stamps in his home village, and we are so grateful to the team at Rushen Heritage Trust for looking after us so well.’

The following day the McCombe family attended the opening of a Manx National Heritage exhibition at the House of Manannan in Peel, which focuses on Leonard’s World War II photography. The exhibition, ‘Through the Lens of Leonard McCombe’, runs until 5 October 2025. It is open daily from 9.30am-4.30pm.

Isle of Man Post Office is delighted to celebrate cherished memories of the Island’s tourism heyday with this collection of stamps featuring original travel posters.

The Isle of Man has long been a beloved holiday destination, and its rich tourism heritage is beautifully captured in this set of six stamps using meticulously digitised versions of posters that once adorned railway stations, ferry terminals, and travel agencies, enticing visitors to our Island’s shores. Each poster, a work of art in its own right, reflects the vibrancy and allure of the Isle of Man’s golden age of tourism.

The early to mid-20th century marked a boom in British domestic travel, with the Isle of Man emerging as a premier resort. At a time when international travel remained out of reach for many, the Island’s picturesque landscapes, sandy beaches, and unique attractions made it a top choice for holidaymakers from the UK. Posters played a crucial role in marketing this appeal, their bold colours and striking designs conjuring an irresistible sense of adventure and relaxation. Today, these posters remain highly collectable, not only for their artistic merit but also for their nostalgic charm and historical significance. Among the featured posters in this stamp collection is the 1928 Sailings and Holiday Tours poster, an example of early travel advertising. It captures the romance of sea travel, showcasing the Isle of Man’s ferry connections, which were once among the busiest in the British Isles. Thousands of visitors would board steamers eager for their island getaway.

Another highlight is the whimsical ‘Happy Holidays’ poster featuring the beloved Manx cat, a breed native to the Island.

This cheerful image encapsulates the carefree joy that the Isle of Man promised its visitors, reinforcing its identity as a fun-filled retreat. Equally nostalgic is the poster promoting the Isle of Man Railway, a transport network that provided tourists with scenic journeys across the Island’s rugged and beautiful terrain – as it does still. Perhaps the most historically significant among the

featured posters commemorates the 1957 Golden Jubilee of the Isle of Man TT, the world-famous motorcycle race. The TT has been a major draw for visitors since its inception in 1907, and this celebratory poster captures the thrill and prestige of an event that continues to attract racing fans from across the globe. The inclusion of this design in the stamp collection highlights the Isle of Man’s enduring reputation as a hub for motorsport tourism.

The rise of the Isle of Man’s tourism industry dates back to the late 19th century, when improvements in transport made the Island more accessible to British holidaymakers. The arrival of passenger steamers allowed thousands to flock to the Island each summer

By the early 20th century, Douglas had become a bustling resort town, boasting grand hotels, theatre, and promenade. Beyond the capital, attractions such as the Laxey Wheel, Groudle Glen, and Port Erin beach, among many others, became must-visit locations.

The interwar period and the post-war years saw the peak of Manx tourism, with holiday camps and guesthouses thriving. However, by the late 20th century, the industry faced decline as affordable air travel opened up new destinations in Spain and beyond. The traditional British seaside holiday faded in popularity, and the Isle of Man, like many other resorts, saw a reduction in visitor numbers. Despite this, the Island has successfully repositioned itself as a destination for heritage tourism, motorsport enthusiasts, outdoor adventurers, and many others visitors.

These stamps serve as a tribute to the Isle of Man’s tourism legacy, celebrating both the artistry of vintage travel posters and the Island’s place in British holiday history. As these designs grace envelopes around the world, they continue to inspire curiosity and admiration for the Isle of Man, just as they did in their original form decades ago.

Created in collaboration with local artist Yolande Alberts and the Manx National Farmers’ Union, Isle of Man Post Office is delighted to issue this set of stamps celebrating Manx farming through six beautiful paintings of Manx farm animals.

Sarah Comish, General Secretary of the Manx National Farmers’ Union writes…

Agricultural practices on the Isle of Man have shaped the Island’s beautiful landscape over hundreds of years, adapting to change, while protecting our precious natural environment. Manx farming has evolved over the centuries, blending traditional techniques with modern, sustainable approaches. The result is the world’s first whole nation biosphere that continues to produce incredible food.

Historically, Manx farming was small-scale and community-driven, relying on local breeds and natural farming techniques. Farmers traditionally raised hardy livestock suited to the Island’s rugged landscape. Manx Loaghtan sheep, an ancient breed, were reared for wool and meat, thriving on rough pastureland. Cattle farming focused on dual-purpose breeds for both milk and meat. Animals were often kept in small herds and rotated across common grazing land.

With less labour available, farming now incorporates modern technologies while maintaining environmental sustainability. Modern farming uses rotational grazing to improve pasture quality and prevent overgrazing. Adapting to the soil types of the Island, the mainstay of production is predominantly beef lamb and dairy, fed almost wholly on grass-based systems, supplemented by local grain during the winter months. Many farms focus on grass-fed beef and free-range poultry.

There are a diverse range of products, from mainstay meat, dairy and grains to vegetable, salad, and fruit. Producers support and incorporate local biodiversity within their farming systems, resulting in fine produce. Continuation of mixed traditional farming with small fields, and an ancient hedgerow network provides essential habitat for wildlife. Manx producers have excelled at protecting the environment with a local dairy farm winning the prestigious National Farming & Wildlife Advisory Group Silver Lapwing Award in 2024.

The dairy sector is grass fed with advanced milking systems and herd management software to improve dairy efficiency. The Isle of Man Creamery works with local farmers to ensure high welfare standards and sustainable dairy production.

The uplands support many ‘hefted’ blackface flocks who have integrated with the biodiversity and formed a symbiotic beneficial relationship. Shepherds and farms still rely on the highly intelligent sheepdog to move and control flocks, being fast, agile, and responsive, they are an important part of the farming family.

Integrating resilient native and productive continental breeds to adapt to the environment and increase efficiencies, the industry takes pride in its high welfare standards. The Isle of Man is proud to be both TB and BVD free. The MNFU is working with DEFA’s Animal Health Team to eradicate more disease, meaning livestock on the Island leads a protected and healthy existence.

Agricultural shows are a major part of the farming calendar on the Isle of Man, celebrating the Island’s livestock, produce, and rural heritage. These events provide a platform for farmers to showcase their best animals, crops, and products, while also offering entertainment and educational experiences for the public.

The Island’s two agricultural shows, the Southern District and the Royal Manx have long been the focal point for the agricultural industry, providing opportunity to showcase local agriculture and food, and have a much needed social! Both shows welcome thousands of visitors every year, highlighting the importance of the industry to the community. The Manx National Farmers Union showcases agriculture at these events, providing information and education at both the agricultural shows and delivering projects in schools.

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to share this important 19th century collection of world coins, tokens and card money with a significant Manx element left untouched since it was formed in the late 1860s.

Dr John Frissell Crellin MRCS MHK 1816-1886

John Frissell Crellin was the eldest son of John Christian Crellin, of Orrysdale and Catherine Quayle, of West Hill, Castletown, and was educated at King William’s College. He studied medicine at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, and became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. He inherited the property at Orrysdale and practiced medicine locally on the Island. Dr Crellin was appointed to the House of Keys in 1843.

He became Dr Charles Clay’s on-Island collaborator for his book on the Currency of the Isle of Man published as Manx Society volume 17 in 1869. Along with Dr Clay they are regarded as the founding fathers of Manx numismatics. He published a transcription of the accounts for the 1733 Isle of Man coinage that was struck on the Island in Manx Society volume 30 in 1880. His grandfather recounted that his grandfather had helped remove some cannons from Castle Rushen to make these coins.

HIS COLLECTION

He had a significant collection of coins, tokens and card money. The Collection has been passed down through the family and, excepting one aspect, was virtually intact. Before the Collection was dispersed, the executors allowed the Collection consisting of 1715 objects to be fully catalogued.

The Collection starts with classical Greek and Roman coins - several Greek coins show the Triskelion. There was a good run of the impressive Roman sesterces. English and British hammered and milled coins and tokens were very well represented. The foreign material is

more ordinary but the collection contained some rare American coins. The element that was missing was the pre-19th century gold coins that were sold in 1933.

THE MANX ELEMENT.

The Manx element, mostly formed between 1867 and 1869, can be divided into the following five groups.

Early hammered coins found in the Isle of Man: The Collection contained 17 coins from the Bradda Head 1848, Maughold 1835 (possibly Park Lewellyn 1835 in modern listings), Kirk Michael 1834, Kirk Andreas 1867 and Ballaslig 1861 accumulations. Kirk Michael accumulation contained four unusual Hiberno-Norse coins. These coins are now in the Manx National Collections.

The Official Manx issues 1709 to 1839: The need for this coinage was brought about by the 1703 Act of Tynwald that rated 14d Manx = 12d British forcing the Isle of Man to have its own interesting small currency. There are fine examples of a 1732 pattern, a rare 1733 die-sinker’s proof and a silver off metal re-strike of the 1798 cartwheel coinage.

The Manx token coinages 1668 to 1831: The highlights being four 1723 tokens issued by Poole, a Liverpool merchant, & McGuire, a Dublin banker. They tried to have an Act of Tynwald passed legalising their coinage but it failed and the coins were quickly suppressed, hence their modern day rarity. There were also two sets of the 1811 silver tokens issued by Littler, Dove & Co. who only traded for two months, again accounting for their rarity.

Coins of the Isle of Man

There were also ten card & banknote printing plates.

Non-Manx Coins: There is a small group of non-Manx coins used in the Isle of Man and specifically mentioned by Acts of Tynwald; St Patrick’s Irish coins and Mic Wilson’s tokens are commonly found in Manx collections. The most interesting of these is the silver Ducatoon of the Spanish Netherlands, a large coin at 32g and 43mm diameter. The Collection contained the very coin dated 1633 specifically referred by Dr Crellin in his 1880 publication.

Commemorating 25 years since Joey Dunlop’s final victory at the Isle of Man TT.

In 2000, William Joseph Dunlop OBE, better known simply as Joey Dunlop, arrived at the Isle of Man TT already the undisputed King of the Mountain. At the end of a fortnight of fast and furious motorcycle racing, he had defied critics and cemented his place in road racing and TT history by notching up another hattrick of wins. His victories that year took his all-time record to 26 TT wins – a total which would remain unbeaten for another 24 years.

Tragically, just the following month Joey would lose his life while racing in Estonia.

To mark 25 years since that remarkable hattrick of TT wins for the man from Ballymoney, the Isle of Man Treasury has issued this commemorative £2. It shows Joey in action at the Bungalow on board the iconic Honda SP1 as he headed towards a dramatic big bike win. He completed his hattrick later in the week with victories in the 250cc and 125cc classes.

The 12g, bi-metal coin not only celebrates Joey’s final TT wins, but also his legacy as an inspiration to generations of racers, riders and fans.

The Isle of Man £2 coin is presented in a specially designed display pack featuring an archive image of Joey in action from renowned road racing photographer Stephen Davison. It is being released as part of the 2025 Classic TT celebrations of the 25th anniversary of Joey Dunlop’s final and history-making TT wins.
