Welcome to our Spring 2016 Newsletter Dear Friends Firstly, thanks to all our customers who attended Spring Stampex – we had a really successful show.

Arthur Edwards came to the stand on opening day and then on the second day Paul Quilliam, a World War One re-enactor, welcomed customers. I was particularly moved by the number of young people who were interested to hear the background to the items of memorabilia he brought along to the show.

Mike Southall and our staff who attended did our Post Office proud.

We have two new staff who have joined our Stamps and Coins team - Michelle and Paul – I’m sure you join with me in wishing them well in their new careers.

Recently we received a lovely surprise when a beautiful delivery of spring flowers arrived in our office from one of our collectors. Mr Bull brought to our attention a problem he and other collectors faced when trying to house booklet panes in Lindner Albums. It was our pleasure to arrange with Lindner for a special page to be made available via the agent Jon Butt in the UK. Anytime you need help please contact us and we will do our very best to make the hobby of collecting Isle of Man Stamps and Coins as pleasurable as possible.

You may have noticed that the Royal Artillery 300 stamps have been prepared by a new design agency, Glazier Design. We would like to thank Ben and his team for a splendid issue. The Isle of Man is playing host to the RA 300 baton tour on the 9th May 2016 as part of the issue day commemorations.

As the Rio 2016 Olympics gear up we are very pleased to be supporting Team GB through our stamp issue. The memories of Manxman Peter Kennaugh winning gold in London 2012 still come to mind each morning I pass the gold postbox in Onchan – fingers crossed we can give it a new coat of paint if success comes in Rio! All good wishes

Isle of Man Internment Postal History Book This is the first book to ever be published about the Isle of Man postal history of internment mail and is fully illustrated throughout and incorporates related banknotes, maps and postcards.

It was the only such post office within the First and Second World Wars that was a fully functioning post office operated by the British Post Office and as such it illustrates the upheaval to tens of thousands of civilian ‘aliens’ caught up in the conflict and interned in the Isle of Man. The publisher of the book, The Isle of Man Postal History Society, hopes that this book will be of interest to not only the philatelic historian but to all people with an interest in Manx history during what was such a turbulent time in the affairs of the world.

Matt Sewell’s visit to Stamps and Coins

News Highlights

In February ornithologist and artist, Matt Sewell, visited the Island to meet with our Stamps & Coins team to discuss the ‘Birds’ stamp issue which was released on Thursday 24th March.

The stamp issue features his artworks and includes our own exclusive image of the Manx Shearwater. We took Matt to ‘The Sound’ to meet Manx ornithologist Chris Sharpe and stamp designer Emma Cooke. Whilst there photos were taken and Matt learnt about the Island’s wildlife near by the Calf. The day was a great triumph and the stamps really are spectacular.

Spring Stampex Representatives from our Stamps & Coins division attended this year’s Spring Stampex show in London. On the first day we unveiled our Battle of the Somme and Battle of Jutland collections and officially launched our ’Long to Reign Over Us’ set of stamps marking the Queen’s 90th birthday with the help of royal photographer Arthur Edwards MBE. On the second day we were joined by WW1 re-enactor Paul Quilliam who helped to promote the two WW1 issues. We were very busy at this year’s event and the show had a good turnout.

Visit from celebrity gardener Chris Collins We welcomed celebrity gardener Chris Collins to IOMPO in February. For nine years Chris was the resident gardener of the Blue Peter garden and had regular features at the Chelsea Flower Show and other TV gardening programmes. During his visit he presented morning assembly at a local school and in the afternoon he met with our Stamps & Coins team to discuss opportunities.

Happy Birthday Your Majesty As well as Isle of Man Post Office sending the Queen a personal message to wish Her Majesty a happy birthday, for some fun Isle of Man Stamps and Coins treated the staff and customers of Windsor Road sub post office to some birthday cake. This was to celebrate the launch of some specially commissioned covers and sheetlets to mark HM the Queen’s 90th Birthday! All items incorporate a selection of photographs taken by photographer Arthur Edwards MBE on the 20th & 21st April 2016 during the Queen’s birthday celebrations, together with stamps from the “Long to Reign Over Us” collection.

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of 10 stamps featuring the artwork of Matt Sewell. We are delighted to include the Manx Shearwater as an exclusive design within this set of stamps.

MATT SEWELL WRITES... I’ve been obsessed with birds ever since I can remember, although I’ve never been the most active of birdwatchers nor a twitcher chasing rare birds. But I did spend hour upon hour during my childhood immersed in bird books, pictures and postcards. Fascinated by their colours, markings and forms, I couldn’t help but humanise and characterise the little treasures held within. So Buntings, Tits and Finches have always been cute, cheeky chaps; the heavy brow of the Sparrowhawk left me stricken with fear, while the gorgeous pink Linnet made me swoon. As time passes and I accidentally spend joyful time with these birds in gardens, woods and through windows, it turns out that my childhood caricatures weren’t too far from the truth.

Birds are such an integral part of our everyday life that we sometimes take them for granted. There are several charities in the UK that work tirelessly to promote the cause of our feathered friends, including the RSPB. I have, and continue to, work with them to raise awareness of the shocking decline of bird habitats in the UK. This is leading to some of our most wellknown birds, including the Turtle Dove, Cirl Bunting, Song Thrush, Starling and House Sparrow, being placed in danger if conservation action is not taken.

Habitat is so important; forests of pine, oak and beech all have their own individual vibes and inhabitants, and every tree is an intricate ecosystem providing food, shelter and playgrounds to birds and animals of every shape and size. Special care is needed to be taken by farmers, landowners, institutions - and all of us - to provide wild, liveable habitats for our native birds otherwise many will be extinct from our shores.

Owls is the first book I have written on one order of birds. A key fixture in any respectable woodland is the owl and - quite simply - everybody loves owls!

Commonly they are wise, cute or spooky but, to me, they are magnificent, respected and spellbinding. How they have evolved to thrive and become feared hunters of every habitat and corner of the world is simply breathtaking.

Being a birder and living in the British Isles is handy for migrating birds stopping off for rest and recuperation and for the springtime arrivals with their cheery, continental charm bringing summer with them.

It’s also handy for the great stretches of coastline and islands that make homes for our abundant array of sea birds - such as the Puffins and Fulmars of St Kilda and the Isle of Man’s beautiful Manx Shearwater. My latest book, Penguins and Other Sea Birds, celebrates our coastal friends and many more from around the world that all have a fascinating story to tell, including the Arctic Tern’s epic journey and the Emperor Penguin’s frozen parental battle. Like owls, sea birds don’t just look amazing they are steeped in folklore and myth and mean so much to so many people around the world.

But, unfortunately, some are very much endangered from man-made and natural disasters and numbers are on the decrease; some islands once teeming with birdlife are now just bare rocks in the ocean.

Birds are a constant part of my life and I feel lucky to have built a career in the company of such wonderful wildlife. But maybe what is the most special thing is how the briefest glimpse of a bird can inspire a painting or a funny quip that will be fed into my books and products and be shared with thousands of people, spreading the simple joy of birds. It’s these glimpses and simply looking around and being present that tells me more and more about birds and their little ways, and I fall in love with them over and over again. I hope you feel the same way too.

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of six stamps that celebrate the history of the Gunners through their uniforms and battle landscapes.

The six stamps are based on the uniforms of soldiers of the Royal Regiment of Artillery over the 300 years of its existence, with a background based on a scene of the time.

He wears a khaki service dress uniform with his rank displayed on the cuff. The background shows an 18 pounder gun, the standard field gun of the war. 50,000 Gunners died in the First World War.

The first stamp is based on a figure in a print of the funeral of the Duke of Marlborough, responsible for founding the Royal Regiment. The coat of blue with red facings dates from 1716. Most soldiers of the time wore hats; the fatigue cap is similar to that used by the Royal Fusiliers, raised in 1685 to escort the train of artillery. The soldier carries a sword and a linstock. In action the slow match on it was alight and used to fire the guns.

The fifth stamp shows an officer of the 15th (Isle of Man) Light Anti Aircraft Regiment Royal Artillery, with background showing a 40mm Bofors gun at Tobruk, a North African harbour. This territorial unit from the Isle of Man served in Greece, North Africa, Italy and North West Europe as part of the 7th Armoured Division, the Desert Rats. The photograph is of Manxman Lieutenant Cowley and was taken in North Africa.

The second stamp shows an officer of the Royal Horse Artillery circa 1800. Horse Artillerymen rode rather than marched behind the guns. This branch, founded in 1793, attracted a reputation for dash and panache during the Napoleonic wars. The uniform was based on the Light Dragoons of the day and included the splendid and practical leather helmet. The background scene shows foot artillery of the period.

The sixth stamp depicts Major Kate Philp, an officer of the Royal Artillery in Afghanistan in 2008 wearing Desert Cam, but without body armour, with a Warrior fighting vehicle in the background. Women have been eligible to serve in the Royal Artillery since 1992.

The third stamp depicts a Gunner of the 4th (Hazara) Mountain Artillery Battery, in 1890. This unit was raised from Punjabi Sikhs and equipped with “screw guns” that could be dismantled and carried on mules. In Kipling’s words “They sends us along where the roads are, but mostly we goes where they ain’t: We’d climb up the side of a sign-board an’ trust to the stick o’ the paint”. These were the Indian artillery retained after the Indian Mutiny and saw much service on the North West Frontier. He is dressed in practical khaki and wears Indian slippers.

The fourth stamp is based on a photograph of Major J R Drinkwater, Royal Field Artillery, a Manxman who served in the First World War. 6

Major Kate Philp We are honoured to feature Major Kate Philp on our modern day stamp. Kate served two tours in Iraq, but while on operations in Afghanistan the armoured vehicle she was commanding was damaged by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). Kate was injured and as a result her left leg was amputated below the knee. We have picked her image as a reminder of the cost of war and its consequences for veterans.

After sixteen months in rehab Kate returned to duties preparing other soldiers for their tours of duty. Kate then took on the challenge of racing to the Geographic South Pole for the charity Walking With The Wounded, to raise awareness of the extraordinary courage of the men and women wounded while serving their country, and to remind us all of the help and support we owe them.

The Isle of Man Post Office is honoured to present a miniature sheet marking the centenary of the legendary Endurance Expedition, and paying tribute to the explorer Henry Worsley.

The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1914-1917 After the race to the South Pole ended in December 1911 with Roald Amundsen’s conquest, Sir Ernest Shackleton planned a third trip to the Antarctic in 1914 with the ship Endurance, intending to cross Antarctica via the South Pole, the last major prize in Antarctic exploration. What unfolded was a story of courage and fortitude which resonates today, 100 years on.

Shackleton’s hopes were dashed early in 1915, when the Endurance became trapped in the ice. She sank 10 months later, by which time the 28-strong crew had already been forced to abandon the ship to live on the floating ice.

Taking advantage of the ice beginning to break in April 1916, Shackleton and his men took to the sea in three small boats, eventually reaching Elephant Island. Shackleton, Captain Frank Worsley and four crew members went to find help and the six men spent 16 days in a small boat crossing 720 nautical miles of ocean to reach South Georgia, arriving safely on 10th May 1916. Three of the men, including Shackleton and Worsley, then trekked across the uncharted island to a whaling station to seek help, not knowing what fate had befallen the colleagues they had left behind.

Amazingly, when rescuers returned to Elephant Island in August the marooned men were all found alive. Two years after launching the expedition, and despite battling desperate and lifethreatening conditions, not one member of the expedition died.

Henry Worsley’s Shackleton Solo Expedition 2015–16 On 13th November 2015, Henry Worsley set out from Berkner Island, Antarctica, to attempt the first ever solo, unsupported and unassisted crossing of the Antarctic landmass. Henry’s ambitious aim was twofold: to raise £100,000 for the Endeavour Fund and to commemorate Sir Ernest Shackleton’s intention to cross the Antarctic continent on his ill-fated Endurance expedition 100 years before.

On this his third trip South, Henry Worsley was once again invoking the spirit of his idol, Sir Ernest Shackleton, as he attempted to realise the 100-year-old dream of crossing the Antarctic continent. Having covered an extraordinary 913 statute miles in the most unfavourable weather conditions, Henry made the brave decision, in Shackleton’s words, to “shoot the bolt” only 30 miles short of his goal.

Suffering from exhaustion and dehydration, Henry was picked up by Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions and flown to a hospital in Punta Arenas, Chile, where he was then diagnosed with bacterial peritonitis. Despite all the efforts of ALE and medical staff, Henry died on 24th January 2016.

In his last statement from Antarctica, Henry demonstrated his own values of selfless commitment and courage: “I set out on this journey to attempt the first solo unsupported crossing of the Antarctic landmass, a feat of endurance never before achieved. But more importantly, to raise support for the Endeavour Fund, to assist wounded soldiers in their rehabilitation. Having been a career soldier for 36 years and recently retired, it has been a way of giving back to those far less fortunate than me.

“The 71 days alone on the Antarctic with over 900 statute miles covered and a gradual grinding down of my physical endurance finally took its toll today, and it is with sadness that I report it is journey’s end – so close to my goal.”

Henry so nearly completed the first unsupported solo crossing of the Antarctic landmass, and in doing so exceeded the main goal of his Shackleton Solo expedition: to raise more than £100,000 for the Endeavour Fund.

Shackleton Solo and the Endeavour Fund Shackleton Solo, Henry Worsley’s journey and legacy, supports the Endeavour Fund, a charity of The Royal Foundation which awards grants to inspire injured ex-servicemen and women to explore new physical challenges as part of their recovery, rebuilding their confidence and helping them to look forward with optimism to the next chapter of their lives.

Shackleton Solo Expedition Patron The Duke of Cambridge said: “Harry and I are very sad to hear of the loss of Henry Worsley. He was a man who showed great courage and determination and we are incredibly proud to be associated with him. Even after retiring from the Army, Henry continued to show selfless commitment to his fellow servicemen and women, by undertaking this extraordinary expedition on their behalf. We have lost a friend, but he will remain a source of inspiration to us all, especially those who will benefit from his support for the Endeavour Fund.”

Henry Worsley Henry Worsley completed a distinguished 36-year career in the British Army, serving with the Royal Green Jackets and later the Rifles Regiment, in October 2015.

Since childhood he had pursued a passionate interest in the lives of the Antarctic explorers of the Edwardian age – Shackleton, Scott and Amundsen – but of the three, the life and expeditions of Shackleton had been of particular interest, inspiring Henry’s first Antarctic adventure.

In 2008/09, Henry led an expedition to commemorate the centenary of Shackleton’s 1907/09 ‘Nimrod’ journey, which pioneered a route through the Transantarctic Mountains via the Beardmore Glacier to a point just 97 miles short of the South Pole. The centenary journey – comprised of descendants of the original party – retraced the original route, arriving at Shackleton’s Furthest South exactly 100 years to the day, before completing the journey to the Pole.

To commemorate the centenary of the expeditions of Captain Scott and Roald Amundsen, Henry returned to Antarctica in 2011/12, leading a team of six soldiers in a race along the original 1912 routes to be first to the South Pole. He led the Amundsen route from the Bay of Whales, up the Axel Heiberg Glacier to the South Pole, a 900 mile unsupported journey. In so doing, he became the only person to have completed the two classic routes of Shackleton, Scott and Amundsen to the South Pole.

The Endeavour Fund is managed by the Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry and exists to support the ambitions of wounded, injured and sick Service personnel and veterans to use sport and adventurous challenge as part of their recovery and rehabilitation.

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of four Team GB stamps in recognition of their participation in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The city of Rio de Janeiro has been elected host city of the XXXI Olympic Summer Games in 2016. They are scheduled to be held from 5th to 21st August 2016, making these the second Summer Olympics to be held during the host city’s winter (the first was the Sydney 2000 Olympics).

There will be more than 100,000 people directly involved in the organisation of the Games, including 70,000 volunteers. Millions of people in the city, around the country and across the continent of South America will be reached and inspired by the Games. More than 10,500 athletes from approximately 205 nations around the world are expected to come to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, to compete in front of a global audience.

that we have seen between fans and our athletes. The sheer volume of support will not be there in person but it can be there in spirit!

Manx-born rower Sidney Swann was the first competitor from the Isle of Man to win an Olympic medal. He won gold with Great Britain’s eights team at the Stockholm 1912 Games, and silver in the same event in Antwerp 1920.

Since then a number of Manx competitors have represented Great Britain at the summer Games. In Mexico 1968, swimmer Alexandra Jackson became the first female Manx Olympian.

Team GB’s inspiring performance during London 2012 captured the imagination of a nation and we saw a genuine outpouring of support and pride which lifted the mood of the country.

Five times British road race cycling champion Marie Purvis (now Marie Morgan) competed in the road race in Barcelona (1992) and Atlanta (1996). Triathlete Sian Brice competed at Sydney 2000. Manxman Jonny Bellis was in the cycling road race at Beijing 2008.

With the Rio 2016 Games upon us, we want to retain the powerful, physical and emotional connection

‘Manx Missile’ Mark Cavendish MBE, winner of 26 Tour de France stages and the 2011 World Road

Race Champion, took part in both the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Games. A century after the Island’s first gold medalist, Team Sky pro rider Peter Kennaugh MBE struck gold in London as part of the team pursuit track cycling squad which smashed the Olympic and world records in the final. Also at London 2012, Jessica Draskau-Petersson competed in the marathon for Denmark (she was born in Denmark but moved to the Isle of Man in her early teens).

Looking ahead to Rio 2016, cycling is once again likely to see a number of Isle of Man competitors representing Team GB with Cavendish, Kennaugh and Team Sky rider Ben Swift all in the running for selection (Swift moved home from Yorkshire to the Isle of Man in 2010). One Manxman already selected for Rio is world record breaking shooter and double Commonwealth Games medalist Tim Kneale, who will be making his Olympic debut.

Arthur Edwards MBE writes...

“In a thousand years of British history no reigning monarch has lived so long as Queen Elizabeth II. At 90 years of age she has not only reigned longer but also outlived the redoubtable Queen Victoria, who died aged 81. Like Victoria, Her Majesty came to the throne by accident.

And from the scenes I photographed over two days in Windsor on her 90th birthday, I can confirm the Queen is as popular now as she was 64 years ago when she came to the throne at the age of 25. The Republican movement must be gnashing their teeth and stamping the ground because whatever they do or say about the Queen, nothing seems to stop the love of the people for this amazing woman.

All the stars seemed to be lined up in the right order because the weather was perfect on Wednesday, 20th April 2016 and the following day, her birthday, was the warmest day of the year.

On both days thousands of people thronged the streets around Windsor Castle to catch a glimpse of the monarch.

On Wednesday, I had pride of place as – wearing a stunning red outfit – she opened the bandstand in Alexandra Gardens before greeting well-wishers packed into Windsor’s cobbled streets.

The next day – her 90th birthday – those same streets were a sea of goodwill as thousands more stood ten deep to see the Queen and wish her happy birthday.

Her spectacular green outfit was, as always stunning, and her hat, specially made for the day, was like an Easter bonnet decorated with real flowers. The crowd’s genuine good cheer seemed 12

to give the Queen energy. She does not look 90 - she seems like a woman 20 years younger. The Queen beamed with pleasure as she, with Prince Philip by her side as always, collected gifts from those who were lucky enough to get close to the front of the crowd.

A car ferrying her back to the castle for lunch, rather than walking back as she did in days gone by, was the only sign of her slowing down. The only thing to go slightly wrong was when she returned in the evening, wearing a headscarf, to light the first of 1,000 beacons criss-crossing the country to honour this remarkable milestone in her life.

As she ignited the brazier it didn’t properly catch fire, sending smoke everywhere instead. There’s one thing I have learned in nearly four decades of photographing the Queen, she is never fazed when things go wrong. Future Issues Churches of the Parish Walk Issue date 15th June 2016 Imagine walking the distance of three full marathons in one day, or walking from Liverpool to Sheffield and then tacking on another five miles for good measure. Welcome to the 85-mile Manx Telecom Parish Walk! It’s held every June in the Isle of Man and attracts up to 2,000 competitors of all ages and abilities. The majority are locals but there’s an increasing number from overseas.

Some are in it to win it, most take part as a personal challenge, to raise funds for charity, or to raise a smile by wearing fancy dress. The stamps feature each of the 17 churches visited by the walkers as they undertake this feat of endurance.
