Andy Irvine Legendary musician, singer and songwriter, Andy Irvine makes a very welcome return to the ISLAND. Last here in 2010, his impressive repertoire of Irish traditional songs and dexterous Balkan dance tunes creates a unique, exciting fusion of World Music. Throughout his forty five year career, from Sweeney’s Men in the mid Sixties to the enormous success of Planxty in the Seventies, Patrick Street of the Eighties and more recently with Mozaik, Andy has maintained and developed the qualities in his music which endear him to his audience and fellow musicians alike. ‘His artistry is quite simply unique and his voice is as liltingly evocative as ever, the songs as pointed and poignant, beautiful and sad. Never tire of the road, Andy!’ Independent www.andyirvine.com Date: Sat 24 Jan Time: 8pm Cost: £14

Mischievous Musical Chairs

Direct from a West End season - First National Tour A tour-de-force impressions comedy. Having made his name with YouTube hit Downstairs at Downton, and appearances in musicals including Les Mis and Avenue Q, Luke Kempner’s debut solo show won critical acclaim and sell-out audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe last year. As celebrities start appearing at the Abbey, cultures clash and eras hilariously collide in this brilliant new parody, which takes in many other popular TV shows and familiar modern voices to help the cast of Downton save the estate from financial ruin – again!

Four dancers are joined by a cast of 15 chairs in a riotous game of musical movement. Let your imagination run riot in response to their mischievous antics and be encouraged along the way with music from Bach and award winning composer Brian Irvine.

Lisburn born artist John Spence graduated from the University of Ulster in 1991, he specialised in painting and screen printing and his work explored the conflict between disciplines and colour. He furthered his creative development at Central Saint Martin’s in London where he explored colour and its relationship to music. John was employed by fashion designer Zandra Rhodes where he was a screen printer. Returning home in 1994, he now lives in a rural setting near Banbridge, which is a catalyst for his creativity. John has exhibited in London, New York and locally. His most recent work has returned to his love for colour whilst exploring themes relating to our connection with the metaphysical aspects within our lives.

John Breakey 'Fragments of a Past View'

Aoife Maguire & Eimear Maguire ‘Montes Arbori’

Date: Thurs 12 Mar – Thurs 2 Apr Gallery: One

Date: Thurs 12 Mar – Thurs 2 Apr Gallery: Two

‘Living just outside Newcastle influences my work - the shapes and colours, and my feelings of what I see around me. I love my walks into the country, absorbing nature and particularly walking with my wife along the shores at Murlough, viewing the sea in all its moods, which is reflected in many of my works.’

Eimear Maguire – ‘Our native trees and flora are abundant and ever changing. Each with its own unique shape and colour. I have used paint and pencil to record and show my affection for my favourites, the ones I see every day on my morning walks. I have produced a series of screen prints using my hand drawn images, challenging me to limit my colour palette and tonal range and still capture the beauty of our unique surroundings’.

Recipient of many arts awards and Royal Ulster Academician, John Breakey last had a solo show in 2010 when he was selected as Queen’s Festival’s exhibiting artist at the Naughton Gallery. Known for his prints and large scale, colourful paintings, examples of John’s work can be found in many public and private collections including hospitals, universities, museums, hotels and the arts council. ISLAND last hosted John’s work in 2007, this welcome return will showcase a new series of paintings.

Aoife Maguire – ‘I am inspired by the change of seasons and its effect on the landscape around me. In particular I have been interested in the light of early morning. I have used oil paint to build layers of colour, from washes to thickly laden paint. I have used oversized brushes to create painterly brush marks and allow looser paint handling. These paintings explore moments that I have had in my surroundings, where light and colour have made me stop to take a better look’.

When we look back in our lives we can see many different facets reflected in who we are and how we are creative. Being creative is not just an isolated situation but a response to others who influence us as well.’
