What is SISAC ?

Saigon International School Athletic Conference

Our School is a core member of the 15-school SISAC athletic conference which offers the opportunity for interschool competition for 2 age groups (U14, U19) in the following sports: volleyball, soccer, basketball and badminton. The soccer season has already started in November. Before the season started, the preparation included practices, tactics, how we were going to play against others. This year, I think there is lots of potential and a lot of newcomers from 6 and 7-graders. We have a lot of good players and competitions, and this is a great chance to improve our players. Overall, the season was amazing.

Having productive practice sessions is the most important part of preparing a team for success on the court at tournament time.

This year we have started training every day before school from 6:30-7:30 am. This training is key as the previous 2-day practice schedule was simply not enough, especially with many games taking place on Tuesdays and Thursdays (the days we are regularly scheduled to practice on). We hope to be very competitive and ready to contend for the title at the SISAC “B” pool Championships at Saigon South on February 10, 2020.

BASKETBALL

The first thing to remember when preparing for any sports tournament is practice. Practice is the only way to improve your skills and commit them to memory. Individual skill practice is good practicing smashing or serving will help parts of your game, but also game practice is important.

Practice with a partner to enable you to react to how they are playing is also good preparation for a tournament. The teams we can enter are dictated by SISAC. There will be 3x singles players and 2x doubles teams, making a team of 7. During practice and training, we will work on different game strategies for both singles and doubles. As a coach of the badminton team, I’ll do my best to choose the best players for our team.

Map of Food Bánh Chưng (Vietnamese square sticky rice cake) A very popular traditional Vietnamese rice cake, made from glutinous rice, green peas and pork.

According to Lang Lieu (the successor of the 6th Hung Dynasty and also the one who created the cake), Bánh Chưng symbolizes the earth, due to its shape. Bánh Chưng is seasonal, however Vietnamese mainly enjoy it at Tết.

Bánh Tét (Vietnamese tube sticky rice cake) Along with Bánh Chưng, Bánh Tét are the essentials meal that Vietnamese have in Tét.

Bánh Tét has a tube shape and Tét in Vietnamese is translated to (slice) which means the way that we eat Bánh Tét is we cut it into many parts and we believe that we cut it into parts to share the meal with everyone near you to double the fun!

Mứt (Candied Fruits)

Candied Fruits or as we called it: Mứt, is most children's favorite snack during Tết. It has many flavours, and the most popular are coconut, ginger, kumquat. You can also make your own candied fruits by mixing different flavours into it. Mứt can also be put on display because it is so colorful.

Thịt Đông ( Frozen meat)

Nem (Sour meat Pie):

A famous traditional dish comes from the Northern Vietnam, Thịt Đông considered to be our unique dishes in the Northern side.

Many people believe that this traditional dish, came from the coldest time in the North side of Vietnam, maybe it is winter or new year. Thịt Đông is a must-try food that everyone in the North or maybe even the whole country has on their plate at Tet.

Nem is also a really well-known dish that we have in Tet. As the translation was already spoken, Nem has a sour taste and many families love to have Nem in their lunch with rice.

Củ kiệu trộn tôm khô (Pickled Scallion Heads Served With Dried Shrimp): Most of the Vietnamese uses these two pickled dishes to serve with Bánh Chưng and Bánh Tét to increase the flavour of these two foods. Dưa hành has a salty taste while Củ Kiệu trộn tôm khô makes the dish more sour. These two flavours are unique to our cuisine.

2020 HOW DO STUDENTS OVERSEAS CELEBRATE TET? Written by Watson Designed by Felix Studying abroad is an exciting experience but there are times overseas students feel depressed and homesick. Especially during Tet holiday, they have to celebrate their own traditional activities in a foreign land. According to Abigail Vo, a former ISHCMC-AAVN student, who’s now studying in Australia, her Vietnamese student club in college will organize an outdoor Tet celebration. After that, they will go to a temple and pray for good fortune. There is also banh chung, banh tet, silk rolls, vermicelli noodles. Hopefully, the Vietnamese community overseas will have the opportunity to celebrate the New Year during this sacred time.

" The bustling atmosphere of Tet with the New Year’s songs, the colorful ao dai on the street and the delicious smell of “Thit kho hot vit” which makes my stomach growl is now replaced with a silent.

Every day, I go to school, then come back home, cook dinner, do homework, and prepare for the next monotonous day. Every time I leave my house, I feel so frustrated; I just want to return to Vietnam to celebrate Tet. Celebrating Tet in a foreign country helps me understand how important my family is. Just like a kid receiving sweets, I was so excited when I left my family to begin a new journey in Australia. However, the more I stay, the more I realize how much I miss my family because whatever I do now, I’m doing it alone! Although it is a lonely journey, it helps me to grow independently which I really appreciate. I still call my parents every night to talk about things are going which makes my heart feels a little bit warmer. So, overall, celebrating Tet online is not that bad!
