HIGH SCHOOL PROFILE 2019-2020 THE SCHOOL International School Ho Chi Minh City – American Academy (ISHCMC-American Academy) was founded as an American-curriculum school in 2012. ISHCMC - American Academy is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

COMMUNITY Our school community is made up of 435 students from grades 6-12 with 174 students in middle school and 260 students in high school. The 2020 graduating class had 45 students. There are 42 full-time faculty members. The majority of our faculty are from the United States and we also have faculty from Vietnam, Canada, China, the UK, Australia, South Africa, Colombia, Ireland, and India.

All faculty maintain up-to-date teaching credentials and over 70% of our faculty members have earned at least one post-graduate degree.

94% of our students are Vietnamese nationals. Our average class size is 20 and many of our advanced classes and intensive EAL courses have much smaller class sizes.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM

Our curriculum is based on American Education Reaches Out (AERO) standards and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). High school seniors require at least 24 credits to graduate.

We use number grades from 0 to 100, and we calculate both weighted and unweighted GPA. Weighted courses include Advanced, AP and university-level dual enrollment through Syracuse University. Only courses taken at ISHCMC - American Academy count toward cumulative GPA. GPA is calculated on a semester basis.

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, our students were engaged in 14 weeks of distance online learning from March-May of 2020. Courses for 2nd semester of SY2019-20 are not included in cumulative GPA. Students were given the opportunity to resit final exams from semester 2 in October 2020. The School made credit exemptions for students to graduate in the class of 2020 with a minimum of 21 credits as of the previous semester.

ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE (EAL) PROGRAM ISHCMC - American Academy offers the most personalized EAL in the city which includes intensive and push-in support, small groups workshops for reading and writing.

ASSISTANTSHIP PROGRAM & OUTDOOR EDUCATION • Assistantship Program: The Intern/Assistant Program is an opportunity for ISHCMC - AA students to shadow and support school faculty and staff. This ranges from working with the Counselor, to the Nurse, to the Athletics Director, as well as with teachers. The goal of the program is to give students the opportunity to learn essential skills they will need when they graduate high school. • Outdoor Education: The Field Studies Program is meant to strengthen relationships, enhance awareness of culture and history, and build valuable outdoor and physical fitness skills. Each year teachers and students attend field trips in Vietnam and South East Asia.

TRANSFER CREDIT POLICIES

Many of our students come from different schools, within Vietnam and around the world. It is typical to see a senior transcript reflecting one or two different curricular systems: IB, Vietnamese, IGCSE and American.

We grant a maximum of 7 transfer credits per academic year.

CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMS

ISHCMC - American Academy is a member school of Saigon International Schools Athletics Conference (SISAC). We also offer a variety of co-curriculars as part of our After-School Activities (ASAs) program. Offerings vary by term.

SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY PROJECT ADVANCE Syracuse University Project Advance is a cooperative program between Syracuse University (SU) and ISHCMC - American Academy that allows high school students to enroll in SU courses. Upon successful completion of an SU course, students are awarded SU transcripts that record credits earned.

MAP TESTING

All students take the Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP®) assessments in English and Math twice a year - once in the Spring and once in the Fall - to measure and benchmark academic progress against U.S. standards. In 2020, over 95% of our high school students achieved above grade level Math, and over 70% achieved above grade level English.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) PROGRAM The Advanced Placement (AP) Program offers college-level curricula and examinations to high school students in a variety of subjects.

PSAT

All Grade 11 students take the PSAT as a standardized assessment as part of school records.
