A bigger ISE, a bigger RISE This time of year means many things to many people. For us at Integrated Systems Europe, it is a critical period when many of our exhibitors are finalizing their plans for the show, attendees are booking their hotel and travel arrangements, and the associations who own our event – CEDIA and InfoComm International – are starting to take bookings for the education sessions they will be hosting during the show. It is also the time when we traditionally publish RISE – the official visitor magazine of ISE, of which this is the third annual edition. Just as our 2012 event will be the largest in ISE’s history, so this edition of RISE is also the largest ever – with more new technologies being showcased than ever before. We’ve also added complete listings of InfoComm and CEDIA education sessions, and given more space to show highlights, many of which are completely new to ISE for 2012. As in previous editions of RISE, you’ll also find information on our pre-show Conference programme, and on a number of ways in which you can make the most of your visit not just to ISE, but to the beautiful city of Amsterdam which has become our event’s natural home. Finally, conveniently located across the centre pages of RISE, you’ll find an overview of our 2012 floorplan, which gives you some idea of just how big the next ISE is going to be. We hope you enjoy reading RISE, and that the magazine inspires you to get more value out of your visit to ISE than ever before.

Bigger Better Brighter: ISE 2012 With its largest-ever show floor and a host of new networking and education initiatives, the next Integrated Systems Europe will be not just the largest event of its kind ever held in Europe; it will be a truly global forum for AV business...

Occupying more halls of its Amsterdam RAI venue, hosting a more diverse range of exhibitors, and staging a greater number of global new technology launches than ever before, the next Integrated Systems Europe will be the largest professional AV and systems integration trade show ever held in Europe. From Tuesday 31 January until Thursday 2 February 2012, manufacturers, distributors, integrators, specifiers and technology managers from over 100 countries worldwide will converge on Amsterdam, all with the same series of goals in mind – to discover new technologies, to network with business contacts old and new, and to acquire the market intelligence and technical knowledge necessary to stay one step ahead of the game in the years to come. With one new hall added, ISE 2012 will occupy a footprint some 15% greater than the 2011 show, which itself had offered a larger area of exhibit space than any previous Integrated Systems Europe. Dozens of companies will be showing their wares at ISE for the first time, while Sony is among a number of manufacturers returning to the show after missing the 2011 event. Well in excess of 30,000 people are expected to attend ISE during the three days – all of them bona fide members of the systems integration community, taking their place in what is globally recognized as one of the most focused B2B trade shows to serve AV and its related markets.

challenges to the event community. The list of speakers for Dynamic Events 2012 reads like a “who’s who” of the large-scale event design industry, with each presentation being followed by a panel discussion looking at a specific area of event technology: light, sound, video, and staging. Running alongside Dynamic Events is the 2012 edition of DiSCO – the Digital Signage Conference (see pages 42-43). Now in its fourth year, this one-day meeting point for the global digital signage and out-of-home advertising industry offers a unique insight into how technologies of today will shape the network rollouts and business models of tomorrow.

Interactive and ‘touch’ technology will again be a major theme in 2012

ISE now has a larger concentration of digital signage technology than any other trade show in the world

Eve-of-show activities: thought leadership and business development The action begins the day before the show opens, on Monday 30 January, with a series of Conferences and, for the first time this year, an ISE Keynote Address designed to define not just the week’s events but also the shape of the systems integration industry in tomorrow’s business climate. New for this year is Dynamic Events 2012 (see pages 40-41), a one-day international forum for the event production industry. Organised by Mondiale Publishing in association with the company’s magazines TPi and mondo*dr, Dynamic Events is dedicated to the use of lighting, sound, video and staging technologies in large-scale entertainment and sporting environments. The 2012 edition will focus on international ceremonies which receive a global televised audience and which, because of their scale, their need for creative innovation and their mission-critical nature, pose particular

Organised by Invidis Consulting in conjunction with the trade association OVAB Europe, DiSCO – the Digital Signage Conference will this year offer a compelling mix of presentations alternating between the story as told by the user – focusing on the concept, issues and solutions – and the view of the supplier or manufacturer who will provide the perspective from ‘the other side’, looking at the technologies and products that were the platform for the solution. The third and final co-located Conference taking place on Monday 30 January is InfoComm International’s Future Trends Summit (see pages 44-45). After an acclaimed launch at ISE 2011, the Summit will again embrace a wide variety of topics, with the goal of creating an engaging conversation about the many technologies, changes and challenges affecting the professional AV industry today. Subjects to be covered range from the latest in displays to network bandwidth challenges, to using Cloud computing, and more. At the close of all three Conferences, delegates will converge with other ISE attendees from every link in the integration value chain to hear the first-ever ISE Keynote Address (see page 47). Gerhard Schulz, Senior VP at Ingram Micro, will deliver his ‘Blueprint for Business Growth in the Digital Age’ – a 40-minute insight into how one of the world’s largest IT industry distributors has diversified from volume to value and beyond into vertical markets. Describing the journey along which Ingram has stayed one step ahead of integrator and reseller requirements by meeting new manufacturers and discovering new technologies to distribute, Schulz will explain how integrators and resellers, in turn, can stay ahead of end-user demands by embracing the transition from analogue to digital – as well as outlining the dangers of failing to do so.

The Keynote will be followed by an Opening Reception at which manufacturers, distributors, integrators and end-users alike will be invited to meet with one another over complimentary drinks and hors d’oeuvres, all on-site at the RAI and within a few steps of ISE’s exhibition halls. Eleven halls, one mission: to educate and inspire As well as hosting more exhibitors and a greater range of new opportunities than ever before, ISE 2012 will also offer a series of new concepts designed to make visiting the show an even more valuable experience. For the first time in 2012, Digital Signage technology will be focused on a single area, occupying the whole of Hall 10 and an adjoining section of Hall 9 at the Amsterdam RAI. The end result will be a larger gathering of digital-signage solutions than at any other trade show in the world – with complimentary technologies such as multimedia control, signal management, displays and much more readily accessible elsewhere on the show floor. Meeting demand from exhibitors and visitors alike, ISE 2012 will also see a larger Residential Solutions Area than ever, with new stands in Hall 7 providing a logical and convenient addition to the established zone in Halls 1, 4, and 5. Another innovation is the Unified Communications Hall – a single area dedicated to audio, video and data conferencing, collaboration and communication within the enterprise. Presented in conjunction with the IMCCA, this highly focused area – occupying the whole of Hall 12 – will incorporate its own purposebuilt Theatre space for presentations, and offer a ‘one-stop shop’ for both integrators and their customers. Joining forces: CEDIA and InfoComm drive new Education Zone In the meeting rooms above Hall 12, ISE will for the first time offer its programme of association-led education sessions in a single location (see pages 56-63). The ISE Education Zone, powered by InfoComm International and CEDIA, will have a single reception

“The action begins the day before the show opens, with a series of Conferences and, for the first time this year, an ISE Keynote Address” area where attendees can register for courses offered by either association, with all tuition rooms located in the same building and simplified signage offering a much more convenient way for visitors to attend multiple sessions. Also new for ISE 2012 is ‘Integration in Action’, a series of show features designed to demonstrate the power of AV and associated technologies, and the end-user appeal that can be created when solutions from multiple manufacturers and other suppliers are combined together in compelling and creative ways. From networked inter-operability on the AVnu Alliance stand to application-focused presentations in an expanded 3D Theatre, novel uses for interactive technologies and the latest trends in largescale display, ‘Integration in Action’ promises to demonstrate not just technical innovation but new ways in which end-customers can receive a rapid and reliable return on their investment. “More than ever in 2012, ISE will offer ‘all the connections you need’,” comments Mike Blackman, Managing Director, Integrated Systems Events. “We are proud to be hosting the largest show floor in the history of our event, and equally proud to be adding so many new initiatives designed to appeal not just to our existing attendee base, but to people who have never visited ISE before. “While ISE remains a European-flavoured event, it is now a forum for global business, and expect to be receiving visitors from more countries than ever before in 2012. Regardless of your company’s place in our industry’s value chain, your level of experience in our community or your country of origin, we guarantee you a warm welcome in Amsterdam at the end of January!”

he spectacular “Nearly every year there are a number of major events happening somewhere in the world,” continued Chadwick. “These events all have opening and closing ceremonies which form a huge focal point and leave a lasting impression on how the event will be remembered.” For those not actively involved in the live events industry, the conference offers the opportunity to find out how a range of AV technologies is used in imaginative and creative ways – and how they are pushed to their limits. Lessons learned in the dynamic live events industry regularly find their way into new products and new approaches in the fixed installation market. The one-day conference will incorporate four sessions, examining and discussing current themes aimed at both the technology and utilisation of equipment in the dynamic environment. Each session will operate as a panel discussion, allowing a wide range of different opinions and ideas to be discussed and analysed with an audience Q&A at the end of every panel. As well as a keynote speaker, a total of 16 leading panellists will lead the interactive conference. In fact, the keynote speaker represents something of a coup for Mondiale, as it is none other that Ric Birch, who was director of ceremonies at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. “Ric Birch is the leading authority on the production of opening and closing ceremonies through having extensive involvement in global events for the past 20 years,” notes Chadwick. “His extensive knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of organising oneoff spectaculars will provide the Dynamic Events conference with a hugely entertaining and informative platform to kick start the day.” Other confirmed panelists read like a who’s who of the live events industry. The audio panel includes Scott Willsallen, who is director and principal consultant of Auditoria, and Gary Hardesty, chief designer and project manager of the Beijing Olympics audio systems. Moderator for the panel is Jerry Gilbert, a well known writer about the AV market. On the video panel are Lee Spencer, managing director of XL Video; Pod Bluman, project director at Bluman Associates; Ross Ashton, creative director at The Projection Studio; and Cyril Meusy, AV content producer for the Arab Games opening ceremony in Doha Qatar. The lighting panel, which will be moderated by Wayne Howell of Artistic Licence, includes Tim Dunn, lighting designer at Gearhouse South Africa; Paul Collison, broadcast lighting consultant for the Beijing Olympics; Durham Marenghi, lighting designer for the Beijing handover ceremony; and Koert Vermeulen of ACT Lighting Design, who was lighting designer for the Singapore Youth Olympics opening ceremony. “The real strength of this conference is the list of speakers that we have and also who we are recruiting,” said Chadwick. “The focus was to get a group of speakers from around the world who have covered all the major events in some description - and I think we really have achieved that.” “The conference is aimed at companies and individuals who are involved in major events and also international organising committees from future game,” he continued. “It will provide delegates with an exclusive insight into the production aspects and ground-breaking technology used in these one off global events, and will feature a number of engaging discussions and presentations that will describe the challenges faced in producing an event that is time-sensitive and a one-off experience which also must incorporate

cultural difference. These global events are never produced again, leaving no room for error - and will leave a lasting impression.” “With such a strong schedule and line-up,” concludes Chadwick, “it’s no surprise that we have already received significant interest for bookings.” Those interested in finding out more, or registering, are asked to visit www.dynamicevents.org or email info@dynamicevents.org.

Tomorrow’s tr After an acclaimed launch event in 2011, InfoComm International’s Future Trends Summit returns to ISE with its unique take on upcoming industry developments It doesn’t seem that long ago in the projector industry that we were telling our customers that 300 lumens was all the brightness they’d ever need for ‘lights on’ presentations – and that a resolution of 640 x 480 was more than enough for any purpose. Who would have thought that we would be routinely installing digital cinema projectors with over seven million pixels – and that projectors would attain a brightness of 35,000 lumens? Predicting the future is a notoriously tricky thing to do – although in the case above, it is, in theory at least, a relatively simple extrapolation over time. What is much harder to do is to identify ‘dislocatory’ technologies and products. Who, for example, would have predicted that, some day, consumers would want to take their music with them wherever they went? Sony did, and created the Walkman in 1979. It has been said that, if you don’t think about the future, you don’t have one. For sure, every successful business devotes time to trying to predict markets, technologies, consumer behaviours and so on. And for those businesses in the AV industry, ISE represents a perfect opportunity in the shape of InfoComm’s ‘Future Trends Summit’, which returns for a second year and occurs the day before ISE officially opens its doors. “It is intended to be an engaging conversation about the many technologies, changes and challenges that are affecting the professional audiovisual industry today,” says Scott Wills, Director of International Education and Member Services for InfoComm International. “It will cover a wide variety of topics from the latest in displays to network bandwidth challenges to using Cloud computing and more. The Future Trends Summit promises to whet the appetite of anyone preparing to explore what the 750+ exhibitors on the ISE show floor have to offer.” If last year’s Future Trends Summit is anything to go by, this

year’s promises to be unmissable. As last year, for example, Electrosonic’s Robert Simpson – widely regarded as a guru on the subject of display technology, with his books on the effective use of audiovisual technology, videowalls and lighting control still regarded as definitive – will present an analysis of where display technology has come from and where it is going. Bob Snyder is expected to challenge our conception of the future of networking infrastructure. The session will also feature case studies from the Middle East showing how the future is no longer just about AV – it’s about total integration. “Everything a building can do technologically will be captured in these seminars,” says Wills. ”In fact, the inseparable connection between the AV world and the IT professional will resonate throughout the content of the day. The programme will include discussions on the maturity of the audiovisual profession as we see the development of many performance standards and best practices that allow for the benchmarking of system installations.” “All the future trends information, Cloud AV, fully integrated solutions will be presented to demonstrate a major theme,” he continues. “AV no longer works in isolation. Customers want it all to work together seamlessly.” It won’t be just ‘blue skies’, however, according to Wills: the presentations are designed to deliver actionable information that can make a difference in the near term. “Attendees will learn items to look out for in the coming years and months,” he says. “We will highlight possible skills gaps and opportunities to address to be prepared for the future. Delegates will learn about future technologies and where the AV industry is headed. They will learn about upcoming standards that will impact their work in the future.” The programme is intentionally planned for a late start of 11:00am to allow for easy travel within Europe on the morning

rends today of the Summit programme. In order to maximise the use of time, box lunches will be provided to all attendees during the short 30-minute recess. The Summit programme is scheduled to conclude by 17:00pm so that delegates can prepare for the show opening the following morning. InfoComm’s Future Trends Summit takes place in the Elicium training rooms which are above Hall 12. Looking around the ISE halls, it’s easy to believe that those who foresaw how the economic recession, the growing sustainability agenda and the rapidly improving technology are those companies who now lead the videoconferencing market. Those who foresaw how network-centric the world would become, and how significant a technology IP would be, are those who lead in the integrated solutions space. Those who were quick to see digital technology

starting to encroach in areas that has traditionally been analogue are those with the most advanced solutions. And those who didn’t see those things coming? Chances are, they’re not at ISE. It’s too easy to look on taking time out of a busy work schedule just to think about what the future might hold as an unaffordable luxury. There is a point of view, though, that says that it’s far from a luxury – it’s a business imperative. An understanding of what the future might hold is fundamental to business planning – and, as Winston Churchill is credited with having remarked: “To fail to plan is to plan to fail.” InfoComm’s Future Trends Summit promises to be an excellent opportunity to avoid making that mistake. 1200 - 1300 AV & IT in the Zettabyte Era

Bob Snyder As video usage increases, the average monthly IP traffic in 2014 will be equivalent to 32 million people streaming Avatar in 3D continuously for an entire month. We're racing into the next era up the evolutionary IT ladder: we're approaching the Zettabyte Era.

Which is one way of saying: video, once the exclusive realm of video specialists, is going mainstream. That changes more than just the rules of the game; it changes the game itself. Video, more and more, is becoming synonymous with IP and a part of nearly every major IT networking experience. In this presentation, Bob Snyder shares insight on how this technology shift will affect the commercial business of integration in IT and AV.

1330 - 1430 Is the Future More Standardized?

Joseph Bocchiaro III This course is intended for the audiovisual business professional involved in design, sales, and manufacturing. Participants will be informed as to the standards emerging from InfoComm and from other associations that will impact the future of audiovisual systems. These standards cover many aspects of the audiovisual industry and include Visual, Audio/ Acoustics, Systems Documentation, Control/Energy Management, and Sustainability / Intelligent Buildings. There will be an emphasis on how embracing standards can boost business and offer a competitive edge for practitioners.

1430 - 1530 Cloud Computing and AV

David Snipp This seminar will explain what Cloud Computing means and how it will affect our day to day lives both from a consumer perspective and from a business perspective. We will then delve into it's effect on the AV industry in particular, as AV is converging with IT and Cloud Computing is set to have a devastating effect on traditional AV manufacturers, distributor and installer unless they adapt quickly and radically.

1530 - 1630 The Future of Audio Networking: Reality & Potential

Panel from PAMA PAMA, the Professional Audio Manufacturers Alliance, presents an intriguing discussion on the reality of audio networking. With a view toward the future, an expert panel of key pro-audio manufacturers take a look at the potential of technologies such as AVB and offer their insights on products, systems and control protocols that will shape the A/V installations of tomorrow.

‘Blueprint for Business Growth in the Digital Age’ Announcing ISE’s first-ever Keynote Address On Monday 30 January 2012, Gerhard Schulz, Senior VP Central Europe, Ingram Micro, will unveil his vision for how the electronic systems integration community can respond to the challenges posed by the transition from analogue to digital. In his ‘Blueprint for Business Growth in the Digital Age’, Schulz will demonstrate how Ingram Micro, the world’s largest technology distributor, has broadened its offering to become not just a supplier of products but a valued partner to manufacturers, integrators and resellers throughout the world. The lessons learned by Ingram, Schulz will argue, have an irresistible resonance for the audiovisual industry as it confronts a networked future. “The convergence between AV and IT is not an event on our horizon, but a contemporary reality that will be in evidence on almost every exhibitor stand at ISE 2012,” comments Mike Blackman, Managing Director, Integrated Systems Events. “We searched long and hard to find the right voice to articulate the threats and opportunities posed by this convergence, and believe we have found the perfect partner in Gerhard Schulz. “Why? Because the Ingram Micro experience exactly mirrors the evolution being felt by so many AV and IT companies today – the move from front-office, volume product reselling to the provision of complete solutions that bring more and more technologies into the mix.” Gerhard Schulz adds: “At Ingram Micro we are on a journey, evolving our business as we meet new manufacturers, add new technologies to our offering, and embrace new reseller and integrator channels. But this journey has only just begun, and we now see the emergence of a series of ‘mega-trends’ that present fantastic new opportunities for our partners. “For this reason the subtitle of my address will be ‘From Volume to Value…and Beyond into Verticals’. I want to demonstrate to ISE attendees not just how they can add value to their business, but which markets will deliver the brightest growth prospects, and which competencies they will need to acquire in order to service those markets.”

The Keynote Address will begin at 6:00pm on 30 January, allowing delegates from ISE’s three pre-show Conferences to attend when their respective programmes have finished. The Address will be followed by an Opening Reception where attendees will have the chance to network with their peers over complimentary drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Mike Blackman concludes: “Gerhard Schulz’s Keynote Address will go beyond technological change to address the way we will all be doing business in the years to come. As such it has relevance to every market sector served by ISE – from professional presentation and display to unified communications, live events, home automation, and energy management. “The Address will be the perfect curtain-raiser for ISE 2012, and we look forward to staging a truly inspiring event in Amsterdam on Monday 30 January.”

AV User Group returns to ISE – with three times as many members! The UK-based AV User Group (AVUG) is a thriving community of over 100 AV professionals from a broad range of end user environments – and this year, as previously, it will be holding its regular meeting on the day prior to ISE. Evidence of the growing significance of ISE as a ‘must visit’ show is the fact that, for the ISE 2012 meeting, almost three times as many AVUG members will attend compared with 2011. “The primary reason we hold this meeting is that many of our members attend ISE, as it has become the most important AV show on the calendar within easy reach and is well represented by the manufacturers and distributors,” says Owen Ellis, chairman of the AV User Group. “And,” continues Ellis, “as so many of our sponsors have stands at the show, we invite them to present at our pre-show meeting to let us know what they are exhibiting, as many of them now use ISE to launch product.” That opportunity to get information early – which is often key to the AV strategic planning of many end user organisations – is one of the important benefits of AVUG membership, as meetings are often attended by sponsors who include many of the industry’s highest profile names. “The AVUG provides many benefits to the end user,” notes

Ellis. “Networking with peers and hearing case studies from other members on recent projects is one. Access to some of our manufacturer sponsors’ longer-term roadmaps and the leverage to impact what they develop is another. A third is our online discussion forum for advice from other members via our website. Yet another is sponsored trips like this one to ISE and other industry events. And then there’s member discussions about integration and consulting services.” “Last but not least,” smiles Ellis, “there’s the network drinks which follow each of our quarterly meetings, where all our current sponsors and members get together.” www.avusergroup.com

In Europe, according to Frost and Sullivan, growth has exceeded even this figure, at 20%, with a market value now in excess of $500 million. The market in question is videoconferencing. There are now said to be over a million videoconferencing end points installed across the globe. That’s no surprise. The combination of the need for business to reduce its costs while improving its environmental credentials, the growing wish of many workers to become home-based, together with improvements in videoconferencing technology have made it a compelling proposition: as a business investment, it is one that is widely agreed to pay for itself in short order. But as anyone who follows the market is only too well aware, videoconferencing is only one piece of the jigsaw. It is now part of a much larger industry that includes telepresence systems and, more recently, what is widely being called unified communications. If there is a downside to such a vibrant, dynamic and fastmoving market, it’s that it can be difficult to stay abreast of the latest developments – and that’s where the IMCCA (Interactive Multimedia & Collaborative Communications Alliance) comes in. The IMCCA is a non-profit industry association resolved to strengthen and grow the overall unified conferencing and communications market by providing impartial information and education about people-to-people communication and collaboration technology and applications. For the sixth consecutive year, the IMCCA will be participating as an exhibitor at ISE. “As our membership base expands to become more international in flavour, it is essential that we showcase

our industry globally,” says Carol Zelkin, executive director of the IMCCA. “Our participation also provides our international members with an opportunity for speaking engagements, to join panel discussions and a dedicated area within the ISE trade show to exhibit their offerings.” The highlights of the program the IMCCA is planning for its dedicted theatre in Hall 12 (ISE’s new Unified Communications Hall) include the ability for attendees to gather succinct information on the collaborative conferencing space in one venue. Sessions will focus on issues that are of concern to all organisations today, including mobility, cloud computing, the convergence of IT and AV, and an overall understanding of unified communications (UC) and collaborative conferencing. Users will also obtain an update on the latest in telepresence and HD offerings and applications. “Both mobile and cloud computing developments have been on the horizon for quite some time but as we move into 2012 and beyond, they have the potential to become mainstream business tools,” notes Zelkin. “Visual communication has moved beyond the desktop and board room and these technologies will help to lay the groundwork for further technology and application development.” “The continued economic situation will encourage many businesses to look at alternative communication solutions that offer quality, value and ROI,” she continues. “Collaborative/ visual communication offers solutions to address many of these issues with proven market acceptance.” Developing an understanding of what unified communications is really all about is likely to be of interest to many at ISE. Some define it as a fully collaborative workspace available on any device in any place. Others have called it the full integration of multiple communications channels from mobile devices to

ew era at ISE 2012 desktop tools. Still others have described it as an evolving set of technologies that brings people, technology and information together in a way that optimises real-time collaborative communication by providing a consistent unified user interface and user experience across multiple devices and regardless of location. What is also compelling about developments in the people-to-people communication and collaboration market is that it sees the convergence of many leading edge audiovisual technologies – as well as trends in the market. Increasingly, it takes advantage of high definition displays: a goal of telepresence is that participants feel as if they are physically present in a meeting. 3D has significant potential in the collaboration market – not only to allow, for example, the detailed analysis of a design, but also for virtual speakers to appear as if they are physically present in the location. The market has also been a driver for developments in digital audio. Beyond that, the unified communications market is at the forefront of the increasing integration of AV with IT, and its growing reliance on the network. This has led to a focus on interoperability and standards, a focus that is beginning to permeate the entire AV industry. There is, then, much to learn – and the Unified Communications Hall at ISE, and particularly the sessions organised by the IMCCA, is the place to learn it. Despite the many attractions and advantages of videoconferencing, when it comes to ISE and the sessions organised by the IMCCA - you just have to be there… www.imcca.org

Mobile communication: the end-user experience A panel discussion at the IMCCA Theatre, presented by UC News ISE 2012 will witness the start of the mobile revolution in video communications, with solutions on view from most of the major manufacturers. UC News, the specialist publication for the Unified Communications (UC) sector, has partnered with ISE 2012 to present end-user insights into the introduction of mobile video into some leading European enterprises. Mobile is the next step for video communications, which the last ten years have seen migrate from the conference room to the desktop, and now to handheld devices including tablets and smartphones. In the emerging model for video communication, end-users want to use their own iOS, Android or Windows Phone devices to make and receive video calls or to collaborate with colleagues. Manufacturers active in the UC space are in a race to port their room-based and desktop technologies to the commonly used mobile operating systems. The prize for the winners is considerable. According to Frost & Sullivan, shipments of tablets into the enterprise market are expected to reach more than 49 million in 2015 and support for video collaboration on these devices has become a key customer requirement. While IT budgets remain flat or increase only marginally, at present, statistics from Nemertes Research show more than 43% of organisations report a double-digit increase in mobility budgets. “Mobility is a key consideration for any unified communications strategy, and the demand for mobile video is rapidly growing as well,” says Irwin Lazar, vice president and service director at Nemertes. “IT buyers continually cite interoperability as their primary challenge in delivering an integrated voice, video, and content solution.” The combination of enabling technologies, changes in working practices and the drive towards greater productivity has created a perfect storm for mobile video. The solutions are starting to appear, but with a technology so new there is a limited body of knowledge about how to implement mobile video communication as part of a UC strategy. ‘Mobile communication: the end-user experience’ will be a forum in which end-user organisations, from both the private and public sector, that have already started out on their mobile video communication initiatives will share their experiences. Participating organisations will include the international energy-efficiency specialists Centrotec Sustainable AG, Kadaster, the Dutch Land Registry Office, and a leading international consultancy firm will describe their mobile VC strategies, the rationale behind solution choice and the issues surrounding implementation.

HDBaseT Alliance makes ISE debut The concept of ‘triple’ play – the provision of Internet access, television and phone over a single broadband connection - has been around the telecommunications industry for a decade. When wireless was added, it became quadruple play. But the AV industry is going one better with 5Play – or at least, it will if the HDBaseT Alliance achieves its goals. 5Play sees the convergence of uncompressed full HD digital video, audio, 100BaseT Ethernet, power over cable and various control signals via a single Ethernet cable, obviating the need for the pile of spaghettilike cabling that bedevils many homes and businesses. “It is,” says Micha Risling, marketing committee chair of the HDBaseT Alliance, the organisation behind 5Play, “the only technology that enables long-reach wired connectivity up to 100 meters for uncompressed full HD multimedia content and up to 100 watts of charging power via a single cable.” Founded in June 2010 by LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Valens Semiconductor, the HDBaseT Alliance now has over thirty members including the likes of AMX, Crestron and Kramer. It exists to develop and promote a technical standard for the technology. This will be the HDBaseT Alliance’s first appearance at ISE. “Initially, the

Collaboration Summit returns to Amsterdam Although it’s not being held on-site at the RAI this year, the Collaboration Summit – organised by Wainhouse Research – will again provide a compelling reason for ISE visitors to arrive in Amsterdam a day early. “We’ve detected what we believe is a strong wind of change blowing through the collaborative communications industry – changes that may affect strategic thinking in the enterprise,” says Andrew Davis, senior partner at Wainhouse Research. “The opening presentation at the Collaboration Summit will provide delegates with an overview of the state of the market as well as essential advice for those responsible for the deployment and management of visual communications in all sizes of organisation.” This is the eighth year that the Collaboration Summit has been presented and, as previously, it will provide attendees with the opportunity to learn from and interact with industry experts, technology leaders, Wainhouse Research analysts, and fellow conferencing and collaboration users and IT managers. The two-day programme is devoted to exploring all aspects of collaboration products and services, the benefits provided, and the deployment challenges ahead. “There are so many reasons that those involved in collaborative communications should attend,” smiles Davis. “We’ll have no fewer than four of our senior analysts in attendance, and I can promise you that their presentations will pull no punches. We’ll be giving

significant coverage to the impact of the Cloud, and what that means for visual communications and other collaborative solutions. There will also be focus on how users are driving mobile technologies into the workplace, and what this means for an organisation. All this will be set against a backdrop of the latest developments in the market.” “But it’s not just about markets and technologies,” he adds. “We’ll have real users there, and there will be presentations that discuss how to drive business transformation through visual collaboration, on demand and unified communications solutions, as well as on how uncertainty about deployment models can be replaced with clear strategic thinking.” The Wainhouse Research Collaboration Summit takes place at the NH Barbizon Palace Hotel, Amsterdam on 30-31 January. www.wainhouse.com

PAMA to host first ISE meeting PAMA, the Professional Audio Manufacturers Alliance, is the collective voice and forum for the leading manufacturers of professional audio products - and in 2012, the Alliance is convening at ISE in Amsterdam. “Generally, PAMA meetings are all held in conjunction with a show where many of our members are exhibiting and we had several good meetings at ProLight+Sound,” says Duffy Wilbert, CTS, CAE, executive director of PAMA. “However, as we began to plan for 2012, the members acknowledged that ISE has become an important show for pro audio, bringing the right audience for our members, and is a show where PAMA members can both do business and come together as a group.” PAMA’s membership includes many of the audio industry’s highestprofile names, including Bosch, Bose, Harman, Meyer, Sennheiser, Shure and many others. What does PAMA bring to them? “PAMA’s mission is to be the collective voice and forum for these and other senior executives of the leading manufacturers of professional audio products,” responds Wilbert. “PAMA provides a forum to not only discuss the issues, policies and trends in the industry but also provides our members with business decision market research, both internal to the industry and externally about pro audio’s customers. PAMA also monitors government policies and standards that impact their business, providing a common Wiki for members to define and challenge the issues around those policies and standards.” “Bottom line,” Wilbert says, “is that PAMA is all about

promoting and advocating for the pro audio industry. The more members we have, the richer and more valuable the conversation, research and results.” While PAMA meetings are normally for member companies only, Wilbert is happy for pro audio companies to contact him on duffywilbert@pamalliance.org if they’re interested in attending the ISE session. PAMA will also be represented at the InfoComm Future Trends Summit (see pages 44-45). “That should be very interesting,” says Wilbert. “The basis of the PAMA group is audio networking – but the future of interoperability includes many other disciplines, and that will be central to the discussion. The PAMA panel will a look at the potential of technologies such as AVB – but certainly not limited to AVB - and offer their insights into products, systems and control protocols that will shape the AV installations of tomorrow.” “You can expect consensus,” Wilbert smiles, “but you can also expect some differences of opinion.” www.pamalliance.org

ISE visitors can make the KNX connection Last year at ISE, its association had 215 members. Today, that number stands at nearly 250. Close to 100,000 people subscribe to the association’s bi-annual journal. Over 7,000 commercial products are now available that feature the technology. Industry standards may come and go, but KNX looks to be on a very positive upward path – and will once again be represented at ISE by the KNX Association. “One of the many things that makes KNX special is that, thanks to our certification scheme involving thirdparty test labs, products that feature the KNX standard are guaranteed to be interoperable,” says Joost Demarest, director of the KNX Association. “That means not just interoperability between one manufacturer’s KNX product and another – but also between KNX products from different application domains.” “The impact and benefit of that are clear,” he continues. “The user has a wide choice of many products from many vendors that can be combined together to a flexible and extendable smart-home installation.” The Association is always on the lookout for new members. “Regardless of the type of membership, becoming a member first and foremost allows a manufacturer to show that they are part of this worldwide community of providers of KNX solutions,” says Demarest. “As a licensee, a manufacturer can moreover become a contractual partner of the KNX IPR License Agreement, giving them access to any patents of fellow

member companies that may exist on the KNX technology as described in the KNX standard. They can then use these patents free of charge in products, if these are submitted to the KNX certification scheme for products.” Historically, KNX has perhaps been most associated with its applications in energy management – a topic close to the heart of many potential customers, both residential and commercial. “KNX can control many applications in homes and buildings,” points out Demarest. “It has already been extensively used to minimise energy costs such as lighting, sun shading and, last but not least, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning. It can also be used for load shedding: on the many KNX displays that are available, the customer can easily monitor not only the evolution of their energy consumption but can also – thanks to KNX energy actuators – find the source of a possible increase of consumption.” But, argues Demarest, KNX is about much more than just energy management. “Think of it as a highly intelligent superglue that enables all kinds of applications to be combined in a smart home,” he says, “including audiovisual applications. We’re hoping that ISE visitors will come to our stand (7V197) to find out for themselves about the wide variety of fields of application to which KNX can be applied.” www.knx.org

AVnu Alliance continues to thrive Any initiative within the audiovisual industry to deliver a better end user experience is an initiative to be welcomed. Delivering that better experience is the goal of the AVnu Alliance, an organisation formed to promote understanding and adoption of the AVB (Audio Video Bridging) standards which will, their proponents claim, bring substantially superior AV streaming to the industry. A mark of the success of the AVnu Alliance is that, this year, its ISE stand (7Q220) will be larger than last year – indicative of an increased industry awareness and interest that is reflected in the fact that, in the intervening year, AVnu’s membership has grown from 29 companies to 40. “And,” points out Lee Minich, chair of the AVnu Alliance Marketing Work Group, “it’s important to note that those 40 members are parent companies. If you take members, for example, like Bosch, Harman, LOUD Technologies and TC Group, that’s four members – but collectively, they represent more than 20 AV brands.” AVB has moved rapidly, and all of the IEEE AVB standards – with the exception of IEEE 1722.1, which is in its final stage – are now finalised and published. Minich points out that AVB is seeing growing adoption not just in the AV market, but in other markets such as automotive. “Many of the so-called ‘standards’ in the industry are actually what I'd classify as proprietary protocols,” Minich says. “If the technology is only available from a single source, then it is proprietary. AVB is different in that there are large number solution providers – chip

manufacturers, software vendors and so on - that are providing a broad range of technology options. “Many of the so-called ‘standards’ in the industry are actually what I'd classify as proprietary protocols,” he says. “If the technology is only available from a single source, then it is proprietary. AVB is different in that there are large number solution providers – chip manufacturers, software vendors and so on – that are providing a broad range of technology options. What this means for manufacturers, and ultimately end users, is that the appropriate AVB implementation can be used for the appropriate application: for example, microphone implementation vs. a mega-channel DSP matrix solution.” “In the early days of AVnu Alliance, we were working hard to promote general education about AVB technology itself,” continues Minich. “We are now to the point with a number of large manufacturers with AVB product announcements, the fundamental work of AVnu in the AV industry is to educate as to the value and importance of AVnu certified AVB products – so we will be featuring educational programmes at our ISE pavilion throughout the show, reinforcing the larger role AVnu plays in assuring interoperable member equipment, in addition to continuing to provide information about the underlying AVB technology.” www.avnu.org

Like marketing communications, all too many business leaders see it as a cost rather than as an investment. But as Derek Bok, one time president of Harvard University, famously said: “If you think education is expensive – try ignorance”. We will also discuss compatibility of existing AV products with 3D formats and how to build 3D ready AV systems. 1600 - 1700 Low Voltage Audio Systems: Raising the Bar Miguel Lourtie Low voltage audio systems have been a mainstay of the installation and integrator world for as long as most can remember. These distributed, low profile systems are prevalent in all types of applications from boardrooms, hotels, convention centres, airports, and beyond. Nearly every public facility has the need for these low voltage systems to handle announcements, background music, and public address. However, despite the prevalence of this application, there is a general acceptance that these systems are functional, but of low quality. Recently this acceptance has been challenged by system designers and integrators who see the potential to raise the bar and push toward higher quality designs employing low voltage systems that rival the performance previously only expected of systems for reproducing high-quality audio and critical listening. In this presentation we will explore a variety of designs and installations that challenge the notion that low voltage systems are incapable of reproducing high-quality audio and demonstrate that, with the tools available today for design, measurement, and optimization, the expectation for high-quality installations utilizing low voltage systems can and should be much higher. 1600 - 1700 Trends, Challenges and Expectations for Signal Transport and System Control in the AV Market Anton Thielen, B Eng Signal transport and system control are changing rapidly in the AV Market today. CEDIA Education: new courses, new topics There will be few visitors to ISE who are unaware of CEDIA - the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association (CEDIA) - which is the international trade organisation for the home electronic systems industry. CEDIA members specialise in the planning, design, supply and installation of automated electronic systems for the modern, intelligent home. They can install anything from multi-room audio and home cinema systems to complete home networks and sub-systems which intelligently control lighting, security and HVAC. One of its most important functions is to provide training to the industry – training not only for those who are already in the industry, but also for those who are new to it. “In the fast developing world of technology, professionals must constantly update their skills to keep up with this growing industry,” notes Matt Dodd, CEDIA’s Education Chair, “whether it’s learning to speak IP, dealing with project documentation, or managing projects for maximum profit. CEDIA’s education programme sets the benchmark for high quality design, Matt Dodd, CEDIA installation and business management skills in the residential custom installation sector across Europe.” Once again, ISE will see CEDIA offer a range of training and education opportunities – many of which are brand new for ISE 2012. “Choosing and Using Control Systems”, “Embracing the Cloud”, “The Art of Project Documentation”, “Practical Media Delivery over IP Technologies”, “Developing Profitable Business Processes”, “Delivering 3D” and “Introduction to HVAC systems” will all make their ISE debuts among the total of 14 courses on offer – more than double the number offered at ISE 2011. All of the courses are presenter-led, with the large majority at either three hours or 1.5 hours duration. The programme kicks off on Tuesday 31st January with a day long “Home Cinema Design Workshop”, presented by Geoff Meads, managing director of Presto Audio Visual. That morning also sees “An Introduction to Residential Custom Installation” delivered by Michael Blake, managing director of Bespoke Installations. In a parallel session, Simon Buddle, technical director at SMC, will present “Choosing And Using Control Systems” which will examine how users like to interact with technology as well as explaining how to select the correct user interface for any given situation. The Tuesday afternoon sees three parallel sessions. Matt Dodd – who combines his volunteer position on the CEDIA Board with a day job as technical director at integrator ThinkingBricks – will be discussing how to develop a strategy for recurring revenue streams from maintenance and aftercare. Those interested in what the future might hold for home electronics are likely to be intrigued by Peter Aylett’s session entitled “Technology And Consumer Trends”. Aylett is a director of consultancy firm Home Technology Associates. He’ll follow that with “Embracing The Cloud”, promising to give attendees a clear understanding of what the Cloud is, what it does – and what it can mean to CEDIA members’ customers. The Wednesday morning sees Geoff Meads returning to the lectern to deliver what will certainly be a well-attended session that

promises to unravel the mysteries of IP. In parallel, Dave Pedigo – who is senior director of technology for CEDIA Americas – will host “HDMI Troubleshooting”. At the same time, another session sees Simon Buddle, technical director at SMC, addressing the dry but critical issue of project documentation. Delegates will be given a CD with sample drawings and documentation. After lunch on the Wednesday, Gordon Van Zuiden of cyberManor returns to the topic of IP – this time, looking at the practicalities of media delivery over IP.Matt Dodd is back on stage to deliver a session entitled “Developing Profitable Business Processes”, while Peter Aylett reprises his “Technology And Consumer Trends” discussion. Wednesday afternoon also sees Peter Aylett on his feet again, looking at the implications of the Cloud. On the Thursday morning, David Robinson, managing director of Sensible Heat, will provide an introduction to HVAC systems, while Dave Pedigo returns to discuss the delivery of 3D. “The ISE 2012 Education Programme offers delegates access to a broad range of high quality courses taught by industry and subject experts,” says Dodd, “covering design, technical and business management training as well as the chance to take the entry level EST 2 Certification.” After its successful debut in 2011, another major highlight of ISE will see the running of CEDIA EST2 Certification in English, French and Spanish on the Thursday of the show. CEDIA education offers a structured Certification programme, allowing integrators to meet examination standards at four industry recognised levels and describe themselves as a CEDIA Certified Professional. Currently, CEDIA members in the UK and Ireland must employ at least one CEDIA Certified professional as a condition of membership. EST2 (electronic systems technician) is the baseline technical certification for the industry. The three other Certifications are EST3 - for experienced installers and site supervisors; Designer Level 1 – for experienced integrated system designers; and Home Cinema Design Specialist, which is currently the highest level of CEDIA Certification, for experienced designers of engineered, reference level home cinemas. “Attending these courses and taking this examination will provide the training and insights members require,” points out Dodd, “enabling them to develop their skill-sets and prosper in the residential custom installation sector.” “In this era of rapid innovation and change, custom installation businesses are under pressure to evolve and stay in touch with the technological advances that will take us forward as well as the core business skills that will help us develop individually and as companies,” says Dodd. “With this in mind, we have devised a varied and exciting seminar programme for ISE 2012 that will give insight across multiple tracks. We expect every session to be fully subscribed.”

“Whether it’s learning to speak IP, dealing with project documentation, or managing projects for maximum profit, our education programme sets the benchmark.”

Amsterdam:

the perfect place for intern ISE’s host city is not just an ideal location for the leading systems integration trade show. It is an international business, trading and technology hub in its own right. What are the factors behind its success?

Amsterdam is the financial and business capital of the Netherlands. Providing an excellent business environment for the 2100 international companies that have set up shop here. Perhaps the most striking characteristic of Amsterdam is its ability to be cosmopolitan and dynamic, without losing its feeling of friendliness. The city offers its inhabitants an almost unrivalled quality of life combined with a relatively low cost of living. Amsterdam is the ultimate ‘small big city’ and combines all the advantages of a cosmopolitan capital with a compact, easy-tonavigate size. That means less time spent commuting, and more time enjoying what the city has to offer. Amsterdam is home to many world-class cultural facilities like the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum and The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Plus, the city has an excellent network of bike routes. Outside Amsterdam,

64

the flat green countryside and sandy beaches are easily accessible by bike. About 40% of all commutes in Amsterdam are made by bike, making it an integral part of Amsterdam culture. It’s just one of a number of initiatives that continue to promote the city’s green credentials. The cost of living is relatively low for a European capital, and the healthy work-life balance is an absolute plus factor. No wonder many expats who inititally come to the city to work find it hard to leave. Excellent business environment But Amsterdam offers so much more than just a liberal and inspiring backdrop. Thanks to it’s strategical location city is exceptionally well-connected. The Port of Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport are key elements in the best equipped multi-modal logistical network in Europe. With a GDP per capita that is among the highest in the world and the excellent international trade routes that provide you with access to Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and beyond, the Amsterdam Area lets companies tap into the most attractive worldwide customer markets.

national business to thrive Digital capital Digitally, Amsterdam is very well connected too. The Amsterdam Internet Hub (AMS-IX) is the world’s largest and most stable digital exchange platform, it is also well-known for its superior quality and low costs. This powerful and stable global Internet hub has supported the rise of a dynamic digital sector: Internet service providers, mobile operators, web hosts, content and VoIP providers, and applications specialists. The Amsterdam Area proves to be an excellent location for data centres as well. In 2010, Amsterdam enjoyed the highest take-up of data centre capacity in seven years, surpassing all other European cities except London, according to a report published by CB Richard Ellis (CBRE). Abundance of international service providers These excellent conditions have drawn a large and diverse pool of professional service providers and hundreds of companies in the fields of taxation, media, ICT, advertising, venture capital and shared services to the Amsterdam Area. For example, Randstad and USG People, major players in the human resources industry, have their headquarters here. Most companies operating in the professional services industry in the Amsterdam area have a pan-European and innovative mindset, and can therefore facilitate European growth from a single location at competitive rates. Friendly fiscal climate International companies established in the Netherlands profit from various tax advantages. The current corporate tax rate is well below the EU average: 20% on the first 200,000 euros profit, 25.5% on profits above that amount. A stable political environment provides certainty for future transactions, investments or corporate structures. The Dutch tax authority is the first in the world to make prior arrangements with large and medium-sized taxable businesses on the tax liabilities expected in the course of the year, and how they are going to manage them. When the resulting ‘Tax Framework’ satisfies the requirements of the inspector, then in principle no more fiscal controls are needed for the year in question. Thriving creative industry Amsterdam has a strong creative industry. The gaming industry is booming here with an annual growth rate of 9% and Amsterdam is the hotspot for gaming expansion. Furthermore, there is a well-developed advertising

industry that has grown at an average rate of 6 percent over the last decade. Prestigious accounts come to the region thanks to this high concentration of agencies. Campaigns for big brands like Coca-Cola, Microsoft’s XBox, Heineken’s Amstel, and the Discovery Channel, are being conducted from here. And last but not least, the city has a strong position as a media hub. Music television giant MTV (Benelux) for example, established their European offices in former shipyards in Amsterdam’s North district. Amsterdam is also the home base of some of the largest independent production companies in the world such as Eyeworks, and Endemol. Attractive workforce The outstanding living conditions and attractive business environment act as a magnet for international talent. Amsterdam is one of the most international cities in Europe. The city is a true melting pot with citizens of over 170 nationalities. One of the benefits from the presence of so many nationalities is the fact that Amsterdam ranks 2nd in terms of languages spoken in Europe and has the largest percentage of employees with a higher education: 44 percent. When setting up shop in Amsterdam, finding qualified staff is a relatively easy task. On a European level Amsterdam ranks in the top 5 regarding the availability of qualified staff, including a financially educated workforce. Part time and temporary work is very common, making the city’s workforce very flexible. According to the World Talent Index the Netherlands ranks fourth in the world for attracting and developing talent, surpassing every other country on the European continent. Petra Goedings, CEO of Amsterdam-based Phanta Vision, offers a personal insight into the city’s winning business formula: “Housed in an old refurbished school in the centre of Amsterdam, Phanta Vision is a unique company combining Film production, Editing and Audiovisual Solutions all under one roof. Since setting up, we’ve always been in the heart of Amsterdam, close to where the technology, art and innovation form a backbone to the business and creative community. From that perspective we see creative crossovers as our heritage, and this doesn’t stop at our front door. In the diverse communities of Amsterdam we develop our ideas and business, and because everything’s relatively close at hand it’s a great opportunity to get out there and meet all kinds of talented people. As we always say: “We don’t Google them, we meet them”. For more information: www.amsterdaminbusiness.com

home, sweet home ISE returns to Amsterdam – again. Those with long memories may remember a time when ISE took place in other cities – but 2012 is the sixth successive year that it has taken place in the capital of the Netherlands, and the show recently signed a new contract with the RAI that will see it remain in the city until 2016. What is it that makes Amsterdam so popular? We asked Marc Horsmans of the Amsterdam Convention Board. “Amsterdam is a vibrant business city which attracts business people – both for companies who would like to settle here, or for those who become inspired while attending a business event and meeting new potential business contacts,” says Marc Horsmans, who is manager of the Amsterdam Convention Board. “Amsterdam’s central location in the world, combined with the renowned Schiphol Airport, which services a wide selection of international airlines with non-stop flights from every continent, makes travel easy.” Horsmans notes that Amsterdam’s history as a place to do business goes back to the early 17th century, when it became the world’s largest trade centre. Amsterdam was also home to the first ever stock exchange some four centuries ago. “Today,” continues Horsmans, “trade shows and other business events are important to Amsterdam’s economy. Business visitors will stay and spend time and money in the city. In addition, one of our city’s values is ‘innovation’ and we are very proud that ISE decided to make Amsterdam its home. During ISE, Amsterdam is a hub where expertise is shared and the newest developments in audiovisual technology are introduced to the world. In addition, our local companies can show their latest

But for the first time visitor, what does Horsmans recommend? “First,” he smiles, “enjoy a canal cruise. If you’re busy during the day, there are plenty available in the evening. It’s a great way to unwind. Then: become inspired by a museum or gallery: Amsterdam has the highest density of galleries and museums of any city in the world. You could take a stroll in one of the neighbourhoods and discover where the locals shops: the “negen straatjes” (nine streets) is a good example. Behind Centraal Station, there’s a free ferry that enables visitors to see Amsterdam’s radical new skyline - which now includes, on the embankment, an innovative new building that is home to Holland’s national film museum, the Eye Film Institute.” “And,” he laughs, “if you’re feeling really daring, you could rent a bike for a couple of hours. That way, you become truly a part of the city and can call yourself ‘Iamsterdam’!” “After all that,” he concludes, “warm yourself up in one of Amsterdam’s many, many bars with a Dutch beer or a Bols cocktail – and then find somewhere to eat Indonesian food in the form of ‘Rijstafel’, a variety of at least ten dishes served with rice or noodles that is perhaps Amsterdam’s most famous meal.” And for ISE visitors who can’t fit in everything that Horsmans recommends? Well, there’s always 2013…

Don’t lower your standards. Be driven by value. In the current economic climate, it can be challenging to maintain one’s standards. When presenting to the masses, where only large-screen projection leaves the right impression, one desires luxuriant, colour-rich images. Where red is red, green is green and blue is most definitely royal. Fortunately those chaps at Christie know a thing or two about quality. Expert technical support, industry renowned reliability and now two reassuringly inexpensive models in the NEW Christie E Series. Of course one has to make certain sacrifices, but as mother used to say ‘it never pays to lower one’s standards’.
