A big year for AV, a big year for ISE... Set to claim another record-breaking year, the tenth Integrated Systems Europe promises to be bigger, brighter and smarter than ever before
I
t’s hard to believe that ISE is now ten years old. It was only in 2004 that the event premiered at the Palexpo centre in Geneva, attracting just shy of 3,500 attendees and 120 exhibitors. Following the success of that inaugural show, nobody could have anticipated how important ISE would become. Fast forward nine years to 2012’s show where ISE welcomed over 40,000 attendees and hosted 825 exhibitors. It has fast become the largestedition AV event in Europe and the third-fastest growing tradeshow in the world. In 2005, ISE moved to the prestigious Connect. Communicate. Construct. On the show floor New to the show floor this year is the introduction of the Smart Building area. Located in Hall 7, Smart Building @ISE has been created specifically to support and welcome a new group of attendees interested in building automation systems. It’s a new initiative to help ensure that the AV industry is at the

Integrated Systems Europe launches in Geneva, Switzerland as a joint venture of three not-for-profit trade associations: InfoComm International, the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association (CEDIA) and the National System Contractors Association (NSCA). A total of 3,489 attendees are drawn to new products from 120 exhibitors, supported by an education programme devised by all three associations. The show is judged a success by the media, helping to define Europe’s systems integration industry and providing a meeting point for the region’s AV community for the first time. However, the host city is unpopular, with many citing inaccessibility and a lack of after-hours attractions. ISE is hosted by the Amsterdam RAI for the first time, occupying Hall 8 of the renowned Dutch exhibition venue. Amsterdam’s location close to the key European AV markets of the Benelux, the UK, France and Germany helps the attendee count more than double to over 7,400. Moving the exhibition to a country within the European Union also eases logistics for exhibitors, and some 224 companies ensure that the hall is a sellout. At the show itself, the organisers introduce a ‘Happy Hour’, extending the opening hours of the first day to encourage more networking among attendees – this is a resounding success. Rise

In tandem with the Smart Building Conference, which is to take place on 28 January at the RAI as part of the ISE preshow programme, the Smart Building area will focus on building automation, energy management and related technologies. Visitors can expect to find an inspiring range of commercial and residential solutions such as remote access systems, network products, lighting control and innovative cabling solutions. Other dedicated areas returning to the show floor for 2013 include Residential Solutions, Digital Signage and Unified Communications.
The future looks bright ISE is not just about the dazzling displays on the show floor. It’s also a hub for market intelligence and technical expertise with its variety of education sessions and preshow conferences led by industry specialists. As in previous years, the preshow events set the tone the day before ISE formally kicks off, giving attendees a chance to pick the brains of industry experts before hitting the show floor. There’s a lot new in 2013 too, with the addition of the Smart Building Conference – ISE’s new forum for building automation and energy management (see page 20) and the MegaPixel Summit – a conference designed to demystify the complexity of planning and installing large-scale display systems (see page 23). Both the above Conferences get under way on Monday 28 January, along with the InfoComm Future Trends Summit, which returns to ISE for a third straight year. This year the Summit will focus on the future of customer needs, the AV

ISE moves to the Belgian capital, Brussels, where it occupies two halls of the city’s Expo venue. There are 330 exhibitors and attendee numbers go into five figures for the first time, with just under 11,000 making the trip. However, it is so cold within the halls on the first morning that frozen ink inside the registration-desk computers initially makes it impossible to print any visitor badges. The city charms visitors but the Expo’s distance from the centre (and most hotels) is less of a hit.
The show returns to the Amsterdam RAI, where Halls 1-5 are occupied by some 363 exhibiting companies. Attendance rises to 16,269, and some of the event’s most prominent exhibitors begin hosting afterhours parties off-site, leading to a drop-off in support for the ‘Happy Hour’ – though the feature remains popular with those who choose to remain on the show floor.
ISE 2008 is the first in the event’s industry to be a 50-50 joint venture by InfoComm and CEDIA, after the NSCA sells its stake. The show’s footprint extends into Halls 6 and 7 of the RAI for the first time, with exhibitor numbers now reaching 484 and attendees totalling 22,199.
The first show run by a dedicated operations team based in Amsterdam is also the first to be marketed in-house, as ISE’s owners, CEDIA and InfoComm, re-invest their revenues into the long-term future of the event. Despite the financial crisis, exhibitor numbers grow again to 564, while the attendee total is 24,912. The DOOH Business Conference is ISE’s first pre-show event.

The RAI’s new Elicium building gives ISE the chance to use Hall 12 as a dedicated Digital Signage hall, while attendees are able to remain indoors, walking between the Europa and Holland sides of the venue. There are 640 exhibitors in total, with attendance numbers rising to 28,489.
InfoComm and CEDIA add on-site certification to their training programmes, allowing attendees to take courses and then sit exams without leaving the show. Attendance soars to 34,870 while exhibitor numbers reach 715. For the first time, more visitors arrive at the show via the Holland entrance (Halls 9-11) than the Europa.
A Keynote Address and Opening Reception join three Conferences in the pre-show programme, and InfoComm and CEDIA colocate their training sessions in a new Education Zone above Hall 12. The latter becomes a dedicated Unified Communications hall after the Digital Signage area outgrows it, while the exhibitor total of 825 drives the show back into Hall 7 after a three-year absence. Some 40,869 attendees pass through the door – more than ten times the attendance of the first ISE in Geneva.

Signs of the times From humble beginnings in Hall 12 of ISE 2010, the show’s Digital Signage area has grown spectacularly and now occupies a footprint almost four times the size Since it started to become a buzzword at industry tradeshows around a decade ago, digital signage has become one of the fastest-growing industries within the AV sector. Market predictions are varied but unanimous in their forecast of significant growth over the next few years. According to a report by IMS Research, the global digital signage market went through a period of substantial growth in 2011 with revenue exceeding $10 billion, and this growth will continue through to 2013, exceeding 40% CAGR. In terms of technology, the largest contributors to the market in 2011 were LCD displays, LED video modules, digital cinema projectors and advertising content systems. With the exception of digital cinema projectors, the survey reports that this trend is not set to change 12

over the next five years. Market trends will also see developments in software and content, along with wireless connectivity, as well as large-format multi-touch screens and interactive screens based on Kinect technology.
Growth verticals worldwide The retail sector has been the dominant vertical using digital signage and its position doesn’t look set to change. Despite its forecast growth predicted to be slower, sales are still projected to reach $2 billion by 2015. However, other industries worldwide are catching up, realising the flexible benefits, potential and return on investment that the technology offers. The ‘outdoor’ market is hot on the heels of retail, with reports of a surge in digital out-of-home (DOOH) revenues. The London 2012
Olympics generated healthy sales figures for the UK market, while Stateside, digital billboards have been one of the fastest-growing segments, demonstrating the significant value of large-scale events and public spaces. Elsewhere, restaurants are employing interactive digital menus while 3D kiosks offer sectors such as tourism an innovative means of interacting with customers. Banks and financial services are using

digital signage to drive traffic into their buildings, and sales are enjoying healthy growth in healthcare as the technology is implemented to improve communication between patients and staff. Pure success appears to be one of the driving factors in digital signage growth. Its ability to work and return value is encouraging companies to implement it into their business and marketing campaigns, and as the technology continues to adapt and develop, so does the endless opportunities to broaden the impact of communication on target audiences.
Digital signage at ISE: 250-plus exhibitors For the fourth year in a row, ISE will present a dedicated Digital Signage area in 2013. Bigger than ever before, the area will be found in Halls 9 and 10, and expand into a part of Hall 8, which has been added to the ISE floorplan for 2013. The newly added hall can be accessed by walkways from both Hall 9 and Hall 7. This year, there will be more than 250 exhibitors promoting state-of-the-
art technologies such as 3D kiosks, holographic displays, retail displays, large-scale screens and outdoor solutions, as well as content creation, signal management and other technologies. Furthermore, beyond the Digital Signage area itself, many more exhibitors will show technologies relevant to the sector, including content management, multimedia control, commercial audio and, of course, projection and display. Away from the show floor, those interested in digital media are in for an added treat with the addition of a new meeting-point at ISE 2013. Organised by The Screen, a Breakfast Briefing on Wednesday 30 January will focus on the key drivers behind digital signage’s development in both out-of-home advertising and retail. The Briefing, titled ‘From Roadside To Retail’, will present a panel of expert speakers who will review different business models and unravel consumer research to find out what it means for the market in the years ahead (see page 27 for further information).

he Residential Solutions area at ISE has always been an important part of the show. Of the 41,000 visitors that attended ISE 2012, over half (57.5%) had a residential market interest. Custom installation is a big player in the industry and the future of the market looks promisingly bright as new innovations continue to emerge. Year-on-year, ISE has increased the amount of floor space dedicated to Residential Solutions in order to accommodate exhibitor demand and the growth of technological innovations within this sector. For 2013, the Residential Solutions area will again be in Halls, 1, 4, 5 and 7, and will welcome dozens of new exhibitors. The area will showcase the very latest in the custom installation and home automation market, from stunning home cinema displays that will inspire your next project to the intricate products that work behind the scenes, such as state-of-the-art invisible loudspeakers, digital
connectivity technology.

The industry: what’s trending? A strong reflection of what’s happening in the European marketplace, ISE’s Residential Solutions area is a showcase of what’s trending today and in the future. With smart homes and cities a hot topic not just in Europe but beyond into Russia, the Middle East and elsewhere, visitors can expect to see a range of solutions that will transform the way we construct and manage our homes. Recent events hosted by ISE’s coowners, CEDIA, have indicated that global trends are pointing firmly to smart living. The CEDIA Future of Home Technology conference held in
London at the end of October 2012 suggested that shifts in the marketplace, global economics and increasing product demand are all driving forces behind the integrated home. Users want a future that includes lower energy bills, integrated entertainment and better connectivity at a reduced cost, the conference heard. The same event offered insightful results from a research project between CEDIA and Parks Associates, which estimated that the UK custom installation
market alone could top the £1billion mark in value in 2012; the average project price in 2012 was expected to reach £48,000, a significantly above-inflation increase on the £40,600 reported in 2011 – demonstrating robust realterms growth. The concept of smart living in the future will introduce innovations including multi-touch and smart surfaces, and other possibilities set to change the way people use their home systems and, as a consequence, how installers specify and install their customers’ systems. One speaker, Dr James Bellini, global futurologist and 14

author, predicted that by 2020 we could be experiencing such innovations as 3D with touch and smell capabilities as well as the robot home. If that last item seems a little too futuristic, it could be closer than you think, with researchers still working on a compact device that could hold up to 10,000 different odors.
Current technology may not be beaming us up to the moon, but there is a lot to be excited about. At the CEDIA Expo 2012 in Indianapolis, home automation and one-touch controls were
some of the biggest trends on show. The rise of app-driven products and systems using iDevices or Android, along with cloud-based control systems, were all leading solutions on display. Wireless is still a dominant segment globally, with 50% of the homes worldwide predicted to have Wi-Fi by 2015; wireless was also the leading choice at the Expo for streaming content from phone to speakers. The age of huge data is upon us and reports indicate that the global use of data is expected to grow 1000-fold from 2010-2020, with major trends such as IP enabled and monitored devices emerging as key drivers in the industry. But it’s not all about the stunning technology. The dedicated areas at ISE 2013 will provide a great environment for networking and discussion, and Residential Solutions is set to be no exception. It will be a mine of information and innovation, offering inspiration and serious solutions that can transform the way projects are implemented. Visitors with an interest in residential solutions will also benefit from the variety of CEDIA education sessions available before and during the show, which provide courses from ‘Choosing and Using Control Systems’ to insightful sessions on business strategy and development (see page 29).

Speaking with one voice For the second year in a row, Hall 12 of the Amsterdam RAI will be dedicated to Unified Communications at Integrated Systems Europe
T
he battle for the Unified Communications (UC) market has seen large contenders such as Microsoft and Google vying for poll position, effectively bringing these tech giants into the AV industry, albeit by what some would view as a back door. Microsoft’s launch of its upgraded communications server, Lync 2013, and Google’s App Marketplace offer businesses the choice between a single vendor approach, or the deployment of a solution that is based more on an open system. Whichever is best is still up in the air, yet it’s safe to say that the UC market is here to stay, at least for some time, if market predictions ring true. The appeal of UC is based on how well it can optimise communications and business processes, as well as to improve interaction with customers. In today’s market, the increasing adoption of cloudbased models also enhances the capabilities and attraction of UC, by introducing communication platforms that can be accessed by employees on any device from any location. Using the cloud for UC provides businesses with a cost-effective, reliable and secure environment, offering a more seamless, streamlined experience with greater flexibility. The history of UC can be traced back as far as the 1980s, yet it was the mid-90s when the idea of Unified Communications started to gain some momentum. The advent of unified messaging merged voicemail and email, and the early 2000s saw the arrival of IP Telephony, which sparked further innovation in the market. How well is the market doing today? According to figures released in 2011 from global market intelligence provider, International Data Corporation (IDC), the EMEA market for Unified Communications and collaboration
(UCC) will grow to $16.6 billion in 2015 – up dramatically from $5.7 billion in 2010. The same survey also indicated that trends for the future point to an uptake from small and medium businesses looking to outsource their communications and reduce costs, the logic being that the lack of IT skills within a company will encourage
benefits of Unified Communications, it still can pose challenges to those wishing to implement it and the dedicated area at ISE will be the perfect environment for systems integrators, consultants, distributors and resellers to network and discuss these challenges with the vendors responsible for producing the technology. At ISE 2013 there will be some 30 exhibitors in the Unified Communications area, with many more companies showing relevant technology elsewhere on the show floor. Visitors to hall 12 can expect to find the latest technologies such as videoconferencing, telepresence, IP telephony, network management systems, furniture, flat-screen displays and wireless response systems.

Unified Communications at ISE 2013 For the AV industry generally – and ISE in particular – the UC marketplace is a development of the videoconferencing, telepresence and collaboration sectors familiar to the integration community for some years now. Launched in 2012, the Unified Communications hall will be back at ISE for a second year. Showcasing the best in collaborative working and conference technology, the Unified Communications area will again be situated in Hall 12. Despite the various

INVENTING THE IMPOSSIBLE Globally renowned ‘cyber illusionist’ Marco Tempest brings his unique brand of multimedia magic to Amsterdam on Monday 28 January

arco Tempest will deliver the second ISE opening Keynote Address on Monday 28 January. Titled ‘Inventing The Impossible’, Tempest’s presentation will address the use of illusion as a creative tool and how it can be used to bring seemingly impossible scenarios to life. Using examples of the magical illusion work Tempest has designed in collaboration with engineers, animators and programmers, the Keynote will focus on the envisaging of future technologies, the value of open-source projects and how illusion can provide an inviting gateway to social-media interactivity. “Marco Tempest has a worldwide reputation as an inspirational speaker whose use of computer-based imagery, augmented reality and other visual technologies is as original as it is breathtaking,” comments Mike Blackman, Managing Director, Integrated Systems Events. “Whether they are combining multiple projected images to create a single animated canvas, building interactive kiosks for retail spaces or visitor attractions, designing multi-channel sound systems or simply providing multimedia content for installed or live applications, ISE attendees are in the business of adding value by persuading people to suspend their disbelief. “Marco Tempest’s unique take on the use of illusion as a creative tool fits perfectly with ISE’s business and technology landscape, while his commitment to collaboration, creativity and enterprise could hardly be more topical.” Tempest, who is based in New York and has delivered presentations to a string of different corporate and institutional

or the third year in a row, InfoComm International will host a one-day Future Trends Summit the day before the ISE 2013 show floor opens. Running from 11:00 to 17:30 on Monday 28 January, the Summit programme will be MC’d by Clive Couldwell, Editor of AV Europe magazine. In a departure from tradition, the day will be divided into three fresh and distinct segments. Part 1, Future Customer Needs, will comprise an enduser panel including AV users from a number of market sectors including corporate, education and healthcare. Part 2, Future of the AV Business and Market, will offer a glimpse into how the world of systems integration will look in 2015 and beyond. And Part 3, Future of AV Technologies, will provide an overview of the cutting-edge developments likely to impact on integration businesses in the years to come. CEDIA and InfoComm Training
“As individuals, we are motivated in many different ways. As business owners we must remain focused on how we initially planned our business,” says Matt Dodd, Vice Chairman of Education at CEDIA Region 1. “By offering motivational support and business process skills training we can assist small companies with control of the business as well as the technological installation.” Following the remarkable success of its training at ISE 2012, when attendance at CEDIA education sessions soared by over 25%, this year’s programme promises to be even bigger and more varied. Seven extra sessions have been added to the course list, with topics as diverse as the industry itself. This year will also see extra emphasis on the role of the internet and technology in business development; an example of how CEDIA tailors itself to the everchanging needs of the industry. “As the leading trade association for the residential marketplace, it is vital that we listen and understand,” says Dodd. “Our education programme is being constantly re-assessed and adapted to
meet the demands technology progression requires, but first and foremost ensuring the learner receives the correct pace of delivery and the necessary ongoing support.” CEDIA will also be running its EST2 Certification Exam on Monday 28 January. The exam is aimed at people who wish to become CEDIA EST2 (previously called Installer Level 1) Certified and is intended for companies to meet the CEDIA membership requirement that all companies employ at least one CEDIA Certified individual.
“The EST2 qualification creates a platform of understanding for an individual who sells him or herself as a ‘Custom Installer’,” says Dodd. “It creates confidence, knowledge, best practice and incredible lead generation and sales opportunities in what is an ever more competitive marketplace. It elevates an individual, motivates them and allows them to shine.”

Between them, Europe’s highspeed trains such as Eurostar, Thalys, ICE and TGV connect more than 100 destinations across the continent. Trains travel at speeds up to 300 km/ hour, and Amsterdam Centraal Station (just 10 minutes from the RAI by connecting train) is one of the best-connected in Europe.
There are frequent flights to Amsterdam from all over Europe. From most key cities in Europe, flights take under 3 hours – often a lot less. Flights arrive at the Netherlands’ main international airport, Amsterdam Schiphol, which was voted ‘Best Airport in Europe 2012’ by readers of ‘Business Traveller’ magazine.
If you’re planning to travel to ISE 2013 by road, your journey should be quick and straightforward. Dozens of European cities are within a 2-hour drive of Amsterdam along toll-free roads, and parking at the RAI complex is both easy and affordable. Amsterdam lies at the hub of a number of European E-road motorways, including the E19

ccessible business destination Thalys trains between Paris and Amsterdam run up to 11 times daily and take just over 3 hours. Brussels is less than 2 hours away on the same service, while Cologne is 2 hours 40 minutes. From London, the total journey time is 4 hours 20 minutes, with a single change of train in Brussels.
On all high-speed trains, you need to book your ticket in advance. You can do this via a number of websites offering rail tickets for European travel, and it’s always worth booking ahead of time as operators often announce discounts and special offers on fares that sell out quickly.
But there is no need to checkin when travelling by train (Eurostar requests that you arrive 30 minutes before departure to clear security and passport control) and you’ll have a seat reservation so you don’t need to worry about finding somewhere to sit.
Once you land at Schiphol, it’s easy to travel to the Amsterdam RAI or your hotel. The train station is located directly beneath the airport and accessed via the main Schiphol Plaza, meaning you don’t have to step outside to hop on one of the frequent trains to the city. Fyra, the airport-city centre train, is a

Amsterdam itself has its own orbital motorway, the A10, and ISE’s host venue, the RAI, can be accessed directly from Exit 9 off this road. The RAI is clearly signposted from the ring road. The venue has its own underground car park, with other car
parks nearby offering free shuttle services. The multi-storey car park is easily accessible and during large-scale events, the outside areas also become available, expanding parking capacity to 5,000 spaces. Parking costs €15.50 per day and is free for motorbikes. Parking spaces for the disabled are also available.

Smart thinking at ISE 2013 In response to the demand for more building automation, energy management and related technologies on the show floor, ISE has launched a new area, Smart Building, for 2013. The area is the perfect complement to ISE’s inaugural Smart Building Conference, which is part of the pre-show events programme on Monday 28 January (see pages 20-21). Smart Building is set to be twice the size of the Energy Management Pavillion at ISE 2012. And unlike its predecessor, it’s not all about how green a building can be. The Smart Building area will also promote the intelligence of a building – its efficiency and ease of use through the implementation of smart devices and control systems – and those in the industry who can make it happen. IMCCA: four compelling sessions for ISE 2013 Continuing its long association with ISE, the IMCCA will be presenting four 60-minute sessions on Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 January, addressing hot topics in the collaborative and unified communications industry. ISE’s 3D Theatre is now in its third year and for 2013 it returns to the larger location that drew packed audiences at the 2012 event. This year the focus of the Theatre moves from the core technologies that enable 3D systems to be designed and installed, to end-user applications that are benefitting from 3D here and now. Each presentation will focus on a different vertical market, and these will include education and training, advertising, digital signage, museums and showrooms, as well as 3D sound. As in previous years, the programme has been developed for ISE by Lutz Möhr of the 3D Competence Center/DNS Consult.
