INNOVATIONS AT ISE 2014

WHAT’S NEW AT ISE 2014? The 2014 edition of Integrated Systems Europe will see the introduction of a number of innovations designed specifically to enhance the visitor experience NEW ACCESS POINT: ENTRANCE F

From wayfinding innovations to a new entrance point, from free InfoComm training vouchers to show-floor theatres, ISE 2014 has a new feature pertinent to the needs of every visitor. While the show floor will be larger than ever and there are expected to be more exhibiting companies taking space at the show than at any previous ISE, the sheer scale of the opprtunities will be matched by the diversity of innovations designed to make attendees’ time more productive and more enjoyable. 6 | RISE 2014

For the first time in its history at the Amsterdam RAI, ISE will offer a third gateway to ease congestion at the show’s existing entrances and walkways. The new Entrance, F, will join Entrances C and K in helping visitors maximise their time at the show without the headache of being stuck in annoying ‘foot traffic’. The entrance will also provide direct access to Hall 8 as well as key locations such as the Digital Signage area, the new Business Lounge and a dedicated free WiFi area, which will be located in the walkway between Hall 7 and 8. ISE’s new theatre spaces are also situated in these halls, making Entrance F a logical addition to the show.

BUSINESS LOUNGE

ISE is a busy three days with so much ground to cover that, at some point, most attendees are going to need to take a break and rest their feet. The provision of a new Business Lounge, located at the walkway between Halls 7 and 8, will offer a dedicated area for visitors to relax, catch up with business and recharge their smart devices during show hours. With modern seating and Philips TV screens broadcasting international channels, the lounge has been designed to offer visitors the opportunity to take some time away from the busy pace of the show floor. The Business Lounge will be open from 9am - 6pm on Tuesday and Wednesday of the show, and 9am - 5pm on Thursday. Free WiFi and a selection of international newspapers will be available, while free charging stations will ensure that attendees will always have access to emails and phone calls during the show.

SHOW-FLOOR THEATRES

Two new Theatre spaces at ISE 2014 will allow attendees free access to a range of sessions with nontechnical content, with the target groups including commercial and government end-customers on the one hand, and adjacent channel groups from the residential market on the other. Located in Hall 7, the new Residential Solutions Theatre is aimed at broadening the market for wholehouse automation and intelligent building design, with presentations showcasing real-world case studies in ways that are accessible to groups such as architects, interior designers, electrical contractors, HVAC engineers and lighting designers. Meanwhile, the Commercial Solutions Theatre in Hall 8 will focus on end-customer benefits of systems integration in a range of market verticals such as hospitality, healthcare, education, corporate and government facilities. Again, case studies will be very much to the fore and the language will be as jargonfree as possible, emphasising the user experience over technical accomplishment.

INFOCOMM EDUCATION: FREE VOUCHERS FOR ALL!

InfoComm International, ISE’s co-owner, will offer free and discounted InfoComm University training at ISE 2014. All attendees will receive a voucher for two free InfoComm Professional Development courses, plus the opportunity to purchase additional course vouchers at a discounted rate. “InfoComm has taken this unprecedented step of offering free classes in order to encourage ISE attendees to take advantage of the show’s excellent education opportunities,” says Terry Friesenborg, Senior Vice President, International Development, InfoComm International. “We want AV professionals in Europe to discover what their counterparts globally have learned about the annual InfoComm show – that InfoComm University training makes the trade show experience complete.” No special registration is required for attendees to claim their class vouchers. After they register for ISE and arrive at the Amsterdam RAI, they will receive their vouchers with their show badges. Once they have chosen a course they would like to attend, they simply present their voucher at the door. Vouchers do not guarantee a seat in a specific course and classes will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, so attendees are advised to arrive early! Also new from InfoComm for ISE 2014 is a special series of courses designed for education technology managers, including classes on designing learning spaces, lecture-capture systems and smart education facilities. “Virtually every InfoComm University course offered at ISE 2014 will be eligible for the voucher programme,” Friesenborg concludes. “And because we know two free classes may not be enough for many attendees, we will offer additional vouchers for purchase so that people can RISE 2014 | 7

take extra classes at a discounted rate.” Information on all the InfoComm University training at ISE 2014 is available at infocomm.org/ISE.

MORE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES: CEDIA PARTNERS WITH THX

ISE’s other co-owner, CEDIA, is partnering with THX at ISE 2014 to provide high-quality training for those wishing to extend their skill-set in the field of video calibration. Taking place at the Holiday Inn, Amsterdam, the training programme ‘THX Video Calibration Training Levels I and II’ will be led by THX expert, Greg Loewen. To ensure delegates get maximum value and don’t miss too much of the show, the training programme will begin on the final day of ISE (Thursday 6 February), continuing through to the Friday and Saturday after the show ends. At the end of the three days, participants will emerge with a valuable, industry recognised qualification (‘THX Certified Video Professional’), having learned how to calibrate and set up all types of video display, including plasma display panels, LCD flat panels, UHD (4K) LED, curved OLED, and front projectors including anamorphic lens systems. THX Video Calibration training is open to all industry professionals but places are limited to 20 delegates and advance registration is advisable. Two levels of training are available and discounts will be offered to CEDIA members.

A NEW ZONE TO DISCOVER…

Located in the hallway between Halls 8 and 9, ISE’s new Discovery Zone is an opportunity for visitors to catch a glimpse of the future by viewing a range of new-product ideas from small and/or start-up companies that have never previously exhibited at Integrated Systems Europe. Around a dozen companies have signed up for space in the Zone, which has been designed to gain exposure to the ISE buyer audience for businesses that cannot justify the cost or extent of a full stand on the show floor. With an easy-to-browse layout and a minimum of complicated stand design, the Discovery Zone is the latest new area of ISE to provide a showcase for emerging companies and technologies.

M2D: A NEW SERVICE FOR DISTRIBUTORS

Designed to help manufacturers and distributors establish new business relationships between each other, ISE’s new M2D service will make its debut at the 2014 show. In the run-up to the event, manufacturer 8 | RISE 2014

exhibitors have been given the opportunity to list the territories in which they are seeking distribution partners. At the show itself, this data will be displayed on special screens in several areas of the show floor, such as the new Business Lounge located on the walkway between Halls 7 and 8. The data will be displayed according to country so that national distributors can see at-a-glance which exhibitors are looking for partners in their territory. Manufacturers can continue to upload their opportunities in the Exhibitor Area of the ISE website right up until the eve of the event, while during the show, vacancies can be processed on-site at the 2Signage stand in Hall 8 (8-K275).

ENHANCED INTERACTIVE FLOORPLAN

As Integrated Systems Europe has grown year-onyear, the need for ever more sophisticated wayfinding has grown in tandem. For 2014, the show is standardising its floorplan across all media, from the magazine you are holding in your hands to the printed plan that is distributed on-site and the interactive wayfinding screens dotted around the Amsterdam RAI. The technology that powers these plans is provided by ISE exhibitor 3d-berlin, which has become a Technology Partner of the show for the first time in 2014. “From the very beginning, there was the technical requirement that the system automatically updates itself,” explains Adrian Zentner, CTO of 3d-berlin vr solutions GmbH. The 3d-berlin system has been optimised for integration with ISE’s own website and, thanks to access to ISE’s exhibitor management system EXPOCAD, all data will be updated on the website daily in the run-up to the show. The detailed and sophisticated cartographic floorplan displays not only the entire exhibition area of the Amsterdam RAI, but also informs attendees about the surrounding transport connections. In parallel, a ‘minimap’ helps to explore the area and the halls. Users can find and highlight individual exhibitors on the map, or exhibitor groups that offer a particular topic, such as digital signage, via the menu.

Crestron DigitalMedia (DM®) has led the way in HD AV distribution since we pioneered the technology and propelled our industry into the digital age. In 2008, when everyone else debated the analogue sunset, DM was the first to transmit HDMI long distance and reliably distribute HDCP protected content. In 2010, we were the first to

adopt HDBaseT® technology for AV distribution — and we’re still the only end-to-end system certified by the HDBaseT Alliance. Today, only DM can wirelessly present HD content, transmit 4K and natively stream AV. DM engineers are already developing solutions for emerging technologies that others aren’t even thinking about.

HOST CITY ISE 2014

AMSTERDAM W ISE’s home city for the past seven years is accessible, welcoming and affordable. Here is our guide to getting the most from your stay

Getting to Amsterdam really couldn’t be simpler from most European regions and cities. There are a number of options to suit most budgets and time schedules, and capacity is rarely a problem – even for a busy show such as Integrated Systems Europe!

GETTING THERE BY AIR

Flying to Amsterdam is one of the preferred methods of travel to ISE. There are frequent flights to Amsterdam Schiphol from all over Europe. It’s quick, and from key cities in Europe most flights take under 3 hours. From the airport, travelling to the RAI Amsterdam or your hotel is easy. The train station is located directly beneath the airport and can be accessed via the main Schiphol Plaza. There you will find a high-speed connection, with prices starting at just €4.50 and with a journey time of around 15 minutes. Tickets are available from machines or ticket offices in Schiphol Plaza, or you can purchase them online in advance. Alternatively, you can travel by bus or taxi, which you’ll find outside the airport. Integrated Systems Europe’s preferred air travel partner is KLM/Air France Global Meetings, which offers discounted prices on air travel to ISE 2014. Use exclusive code 20490AF when you book to take advantage of great discounts. Visit www.iseurope.org and under ‘Information’ click on ‘Book discount flights’. You’ll then be taken to the Air France KLM Global Meetings page where you can begin to plan your journey.

16 | RISE 2014

GETTING THERE BY TRAIN

Working out your journey to Amsterdam doesn’t always have to involve flying. Travelling by train can be a cost-effective and stress-free way to travel. With Europe’s great rail links it’s easy to reach Amsterdam from a number of cities across the continent. The journeys are affordable, relaxing and a more environmentally friendly option over using a car or plane. High-speed trains including Eurostar, Thalys, ICE and TGV connect over 100 destinations across Europe. From London, you can reach Amsterdam in just over four hours by Eurostar and connecting services, while Thalys travels up to 300 km/hour offering speedy services between

Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels and Cologne. You will need to book your rail ticket in advance, which you can do online and it’s always advisable to book early to take advantage of discounts or special offers. Eurostar requests that you arrive at least 30 minutes before departure to go through security and passport control, whereas other train lines advise you to simply arrive in good time before departure.

ELCOMES YOU! How much baggage can I take? You do not need to check in baggage as you do on a flight. Luggage can be stored on shelves overhead or in luggage racks at either end of the carriage. Consult the website of your train operator for further information on luggage size guidelines and allowances. Where do the trains arrive in Amsterdam? All high-speed trains arrive at Amsterdam Centraal, the city’s main train station. Once you arrive, you can access trams, buses and the metro to get you to your hotel or RAI Amsterdam. Taxis also queue by the station’s front entrance. What’s on board? On the Eurostar, there is a range of classes available to help you make the most out of your journey. Business Premier and Standard Premier offer a variety of features including hot meals served at your seat and quiet, spacious carriages. Standard class provides a café for light snacks and beverages. Both Thalys and ICE also offer similar facilities as well as wi-fi access and reclining seats.

TRENDS AT ISE 2014

THAT WAS

THEN THIS IS

NOW! The first ISE took place in Geneva, Switzerland, back in 2004 – a year that saw the first Mars landings, the single largest expansion of the European Union, the Ubuntu operating system released – and Greece winning the UEFA European Championship. It all seems like a very long time ago. But in a fast-moving industry like AV, so too does ISE 2013. Ian McMurray investigates 20 | RISE 2014

What’s happened over the past 12 months – and what will we learn from ISE 2014 about the next 12 months? “The continuing story of 4K and beyond is an evolving trend,” says David Labuskes, executive director and CEO of InfoComm International. “The greater concentration of pixels makes it ideal for digital signage, command and control facilities, visualisation applications, scientific applications, engineering and simulation, and others.” “BYOD is another trend, impacting unified communications, conferencing, and presentation applications,” he continues. “There are technical and security

ramifications of opening AV systems to BYOD devices, and these impact design choices, including access control to signalling decisions, like supported resolutions and bit rates.” “Collaboration has been the buzz word in the market this year with a move away from the formal and often formulaic meeting room, towards more relaxed, flexible meeting spaces,” adds Kevin Morrison, managing director and vice president, AMX Europe. “Thanks to the Cloud, the BYOD trend, the ubiquitous nature of technology today and the ever increasing degree of AV/IT convergence, any space can now become a technology-enabled and technologically-ready ‘meeting’ room.” “With fewer technological boundaries and conventions to observe and constrain, creativity,

flexibility and expectation has increased dramatically,” he continues. “In this challenging market there is a real place for simpler technological solutions which are easy to scale, configure, install and ultimately, to use. AMX has seen this first hand, through the phenomenal success of products such as our Enova range.”

4K BECOMES SIGNIFICANT

Larry Pexton, vice chair of the CEDIA board of directors, also clearly sees 4K resolution as having become more significant. “According to preliminary findings from CEDIA’s Annual Size and Scope of the Residential Electronic Systems Market report, home technology professionals anticipate ending 2013 with a 16% increase in gross revenue,” he notes. “In video, 4K is gaining traction in the US; however, report respondents only expect RISE 2014 | 21

11% of their TV sales in the next 12 months to come from Ultra-HD/4K sets, indicating the need for content to catch up in order for sales to increase.” “One area that has seen growth this year is the audio segment of the industry,” he goes on. “Audio quality is improving as well as the quality and quantity of invisible speaker solutions. So far in 2013, home technology professionals have seen a 9% increase in audio revenue.” Also a believer in 4K is Crestron International vice president Robin van Meeuwen. “Crestron’s philosophy has always been to react and change to market demands,” he says. “A few years ago, 3D was a very hot topic and we proved that DigitalMedia was able to support it. The days of 3D are numbered and

USER EXPERIENCE

It would be easy to believe that 4K was the only show in town – but the fact is that there is, and will continue to be, plenty of life in HD – and in 3D, come to that. “We’re seeing an increasing desire for higher resolution displays and support for 3D content, whether this is used regularly by customers or not,” notes Paul Wilson, product manager at Epson Europe. “Even on more portable home entertainment projectors, customers are more savvy and increasingly demanding full-HD projection. Epson’s product range has adjusted to reflect this demand, with a line-up of seven 1080p models compared to just three 720p models.” “One other trend is the evolving nature of connectivity,

One area that has seen growth is the audio segment of the industry; audio quality is improving along with that of speaker solutions.

Larry Pexton

Vice Chair of the CEDIA Board of Directors

we have already aligned Crestron DigitalMedia to the latest trend which is 4K.” “The biggest change that Atlona has been a part of is the support and distribution of 4K signals,” says the company’s marketing communications manager, Michael DiBella . “4K/Ultra-HD has been talked about for a while now, but, as the prices have become more affordable, we have seen many customers make the investment in 4K displays for their conference rooms, visualisation centres, and in high-end home theatres. Atlona is one of the few manufactures that provides 4K support from our switchers to our extenders and receivers. More importantly, we can support and distribute 4K over standard Cat 5/6 twisted pair.”

22 | RISE 2014

particularly with regards to wireless communications and tablets/ smart phones,” adds Wilson. “Two of Epson’s portable home entertainment projectors now support optional Wi-Fi through a dongle, allowing customers to connect their laptops through Network Projection or their iOS/ Android devices through Epson’s iProjection app. This is a first for Epson’s home cinema range.” But Miles Donovan, channel development manager, business products, Christie EMEA makes the key point that the technology is perhaps less important than what it means to the user experience – whether residential or commercial. “A constant trend year-onyear is ‘bigger and bolder’,” he says. “Customers from a host of applications and markets want

bigger, brighter images, with greater colour fidelity and resolution, creating an unforgettable experience. If you look around today, brightness and image quality continue to be the main drivers in creating the ‘Wow!’ factor. This trend is not restricted; it continues to move through multiple technologies including projection, LCD panels and LED video walls to name a few. Customers expect the ‘Wow!’ factor on a commercial scale even more so now, with consumer products providing great experiences in the palms of their hands.”

CONNECTIVITY EVERYWHERE

The ubiquitous connectivity that Epson’s Wilson sees is also close to the heart of Michael Malcolm, founder and CEO of Kaleidescape. “While some pushed the envelope in recreating the perfect movie theatre experience at home, there has been a major push towards mobility, immediacy and convenience,” he believes. “This trend accelerated even further when Wi-Fi networks became ubiquitous and movies could be played in any environment—at home or on the road.” “But,” he adds, “while touting convenience benefits, streaming and VOD are only as good as the networks that deliver content to the consumer. Buffering and stuttering are real pain points for many users.” “Lastly,” he concludes, “the reality of the situation is not ‘any movie ever made, at any time, anywhere.’ We’ve observed that the studios still make most new releases and popular titles available for purchase only via DVDs and Blu-ray discs.” Convenience and quality are invariably uneasy bedfellows – a point often made by audiophiles bemoaning the iPod generation who have never heard music the way it was meant to be heard. At least, that seems to be true for the mass consumer market – but in the professional/commercial market, the goal continues to be to move both forward in tandem. “The team at Revolabs has seen some major transitions in the commercial AV market in 2013 – and we’re happy to say that we had some rather large announcements

ourselves,” smiles the company’s Tim Root, CTO and executive vice president of business development. “One of many major innovations in our new products is that they feature a sub-mid woofer and tweeter speaker to provide audio clarity, quality, and volume previously unavailable in a speakerphone.”

LOOK! NO WIRES!

“Another trend is that the market continues to move to wireless microphones as the preferred solution over traditional wired and ceiling microphones in large conference rooms,” he continues. “For this setting, Revolabs recently announced the Executive Elite wireless microphone system with a completely redefined feature set.” Eliminating wires is also driving developments at Lutron. “We are seeing a rising demand for retrofit RF solutions,” notes Fayaz Kermali, the company’s sales manager for residential systems. “Home owners are still very interested in technology, but are not necessarily willing to commit to a wired in solution that requires major interior upheaval.” “As well as the continued drive for smaller, more universal products, simplicity is also one of the trends being indicated by AV specialists,” he goes on. “Although centralised touch panel control is still the traditional way to integrate AV, HVAC, lighting and window treatments, we are seeing an increase in popularity from end users for simple apps, with localised wall controls.” The question is: how will these trends be reflected on the RAI show floor? “As 4K display pricing continues to drop, I have to assume that more and more manufacturers will be promoting how their solutions support and/or integrate with 4K,” says Atlona’s DiBella. “We want to insure that each ISE guest knows that Atlona is the 4K distribution source!” Vying for those same visitors is Crestron’s van Meeuwen. “At ISE 2014, Crestron will be showcasing its new family of HDMI over HDBaseT extenders, which transmit and

receive 4K content using standard CAT5e/UTP cables,” he explains. “In addition, Crestron DigitalMedia matrix switchers, ranging from the 8X8 model to the newest 128X128 edition, are ready for 4K support.”

BYOD AND THE CLOUD

“We’ll see more Cloud-based solutions and services together with collaborative technologies and those which facilitate BYODs, as well as single box solutions which greatly simplify installation, integration, maintenance and the user experience,” adds AMX’s Morrison. “The consumer mantra of ‘simpler, more affordable and intuitive’ will be reflected in a wide range of products at ISE 2014, including a range of products on the Lutron stand,” says the company’s Kermall. “Alongside

the same audio and video quality as DVD and Blu-ray discs and will set in the disc-to-digital revolution,” he believes. “That will bring quality and convenience and facilitate the discto-digital evolution for the masses. It’s a very exciting time to be in this business: these trends will make it possible for the Kaleidescape Experience to be enjoyed by many more consumers.” “Most custom installation companies are refreshing their product offerings at this time, and I would expect to see considerable innovation in network-capable speaker products, including Bluetooth, and WiFi products with and without AirPlay,” believes CEDIA’s Pexton. “Quite simply ISE will mirror those trends, showcasing the products and technologies to reflect their audiences

People from all over the world flock to ISE for the opportunity to see technology applied in ways they previously could not imagine.

David Labuskes

CEO InfoComm International

our HomeWorks QS solution for high end residential installations there will be a range of wireless retrofit products for both light and shade control that caters for the mid-end market.” “It is always difficult to predict the impact of new products and technologies within a market,” says Revolabs’ Root, with classic understatement. “There are, however, many other changes that will have an impact on 2014, including the penetration of AVB networks, PCbased video communications products in the conference room, Web-based video servers, and WebRTC as a new desktop client.” Kaleidescape’s Malcolm looks beyond 2014. “While streaming will continue to grow, we will also continue to see the growth of highquality digital downloads that offer

and markets, be it in the simplest easiest way - or in an engaging, creative and thought provoking way. I know what we’ll be doing at Christie,” laughs the company’s Donovan. The final word goes to InfoComm’s Labuskes. “ISE is an effective barometer of trends and which new technologies are gaining traction in the marketplace,” he says. “I am looking forward to seeing how these trends are translated on the ISE show floor. But what is always exciting to me is the thought of stumbling across the unexpected – the next new AV application. I think that’s why people all over the world flock to ISE – the opportunity to see AV technology applied in ways that they previously could not imagine.”

PRE-SHOW EVENTS ISE 2014

RAISING THE CURTAIN An impressive line-up of events has been planned for the Amsterdam RAI on Monday 3 February – the day before the official opening of ISE 2014. From full-day education sessions to the return of the Smart Building Conference, the pre-show events at this year’s show promise to inspire, stimulate and motivate

SMART BUILDING CONFERENCE @ ISE 2014 After drawing over 150 delegates and global media praise to its first two events, the Smart Building Conference returns to Amsterdam on Monday 3 February 2014. Repeating the successful twin-track formula of the London 2013 Conference, the Amsterdam event will help to make the Smart Building dream a reality by encouraging different industries to work together, integrating the various technologies that make buildings smart. Delegates will be able to chooose between commercial and residential tracks, with plenary sessions, keynote speeches and panel discussions book-ending the day. The Conference will again be hosted by Bob Snyder, Editor-in-Chief of Channel Media Europe, with representatives from CEDIA and InfoComm International hosting the residential and commercial tracks, respectively. The Smart Building Conference will be complemented by a table-top exhibition area and will provide a unique opportunity for ISE attendees to gain the information and contacts they need to play a bigger role in the development of intelligent buildings. “In Amsterdam in February, we’ll be taking some of the themes that we explored in London – where the content was focused very much on the UK market – and giving them a European dimension,” comments Snyder. “We’ll be focusing on energy management and emerging technologies, but the day will something for everybody who is curious about how they need to equip their business for the coming smart-building revolution.” A joint venture of InfoComm International and CEDIA, the Smart Building Conference @ ISE 2014 will offer discounted delegate rates for members of both associations, as well as early-bird booking discounts for all. For the latest programme information please visit: www.smartbuildingconference.com

AUDIO FORUM The Audio Forum, presented by ISE media partner Connessioni, is a new pre-show event designed specifically to facilitate meetings and knowledge-sharing between professionals and companies in the professional audio community. A full one-day event taking place on Monday 3 February, the Forum’s main theme will be that of transport protocols used in digital audio – a topic currently causing great debate among content producers, professionals, consultants and distributors. At the Audio Forum, the professional sound community will be able to “meet around the same table” to discuss some of the most relevant issues for the sector and exchange opinions, ideas and points of view and thus contribute to the growth of the market. The Forum represents another opportunity to bring together under one roof the world of systems integration and the more vertical environment of professional audio – worlds which have so many elements in common, from the technology to the products, and from the applications to the marketplace. INVESTOR SHOWCASE A collaboration between Integrated Systems Europe and Go4Venture, the pre-show Investor Showcase has been designed to place innovative design and manufacturing companies in front of potential investors, both financial and strategic. Taking place on Monday 3 February 2014, the Showcase is an invitation-only event. There are no country restrictions and the organisers expect both early-stage and more established companies to participate. “We are advisers and registered brokers who help to build great tech companies and realise their value with insightful M&A and financial advice,” says Jean-Michel Deligny, Managing Director, Go4Venture. “With the Investor Showcase, our goal is to create an event that showcases a bunch of companies exhibiting at ISE, which are doing interesting stuff and are of interest to potential investors. Our 11,000-strong database includes venture capitalists, private-equity firms, companies and service providers – an enormous depth and variety of investment sources for ISE exhibitors looking to take their offering to the next level.” Go4Venture is particularly keen to hear from ISE exhibitors in the sectors of Digital Signage, Residential Solutions, Unified Communications and Smart Building, but the Investor Showcase is not confined to those areas and any ISE exhibitor is free to apply for a presence at the event, which will be offered free of charge based on a number of strict criteria. An online application form is available at: www.ise.go4venture.com For more information about Go4Venture please visit: www.go4venture.com

ONE-DAY SEMINARS FROM CEDIA Also on Monday 3 February, industry specialists from CEDIA will be presenting three full-day seminars from 10am– 5pm, adding a new dimension to the association’s Professional Development programme at ISE. The ‘Home Cinema Design Workshop’ presented by Peter Aylett, Technical Director at Archimedia, will present an insight into the importance of designing cinemas using standards-based engineering calculations rather than subjective guesswork. The morning will be classroom based where Peter will introduce the standards and the engineering skills necessary to apply them. The afternoon will be spent working in small groups applying the knowledge gained in the morning. During the afternoon workshop, a number of additional subject matter experts will be on hand to spend time with individual groups to help with the design. By the end of this course, delegates will understand how applying engineering standards to cinema design ensures a high standard of repeatable performance. In a parallel session, Matt Dodd from Thinking Bricks, will present ‘Let’s Make Money’, a course aimed at business owners, and those responsible for the strategy, profitability and business planning of any small business. The session will focus on the business plan, and why it‘s so important as well as the misunderstandings and misconceptions around profitability, mark-up versus margin, P&L and balance sheets. At the same time, Geoff Meads and Dave Pedigo will co-present ‘Residential Networking’, which will provide a foundation for understanding IP (Internet Protocol). It is appropriate for both beginners and individuals looking to formalise and increase their IP networking knowledge.

CEDIA membership is a unique and valuable benefit, which adds value to any CI business not only from a technical point of view but also a human perspective. How many years have you been coming to ISE? ISE 2014 will be my fifth show. For me, the networking, education schemes and the atmosphere have always been great. The show has become bigger and bigger over the years and, in turn, this has improved the services, information and business opportunities available to visitors. What in your view is the best thing about CEDIA’s involvement in ISE? CEDIA’s involvement at the show creates an excellent networking environment for members to create new business, discuss on-going projects, discover technical solutions, and to share experiences and practical ideas on problem-solving. What are you looking forward to most about ISE 2014? I am looking forward to the education programme at ISE. As a CEDIA volunteer and Board Member, I am conscious of all the hard work and skills that have been put into formulating a really interesting and worthwhile education programme. It’s a varied and high quality programme delivered by professional subject matter experts.

Giles Sutton

How many years have you been coming to ISE? For the past 5 years.

How long have you been a CEDIA member? I have been a CEDIA member since 2004 joining just after I moved into the industry. I joined the Membership committee almost immediately remaining until 2012 when I moved to the CEDIA Outreach committee – where I am presently still a member.

What in your view is the best thing about CEDIA‘s involvement in ISE? Manufacturers and visitors alike view ISE as the most important technology event in the world after

James & Giles UK

What in your view is the greatest benefit of CEDIA membership? CEDIA offers a huge amount of value to its members. Firstly, the training on offer, particularly in the fields of IP networking, is extremely relevant and, as technology professionals, we should be seeking courses like this in order to develop our technical capabilities. CEDIA’s work to promote our industry is also invaluable as, even today, it surprises me that we are still a mystery to many established industries such as architecture, interior design and M&E. CEDIA’s RIBA-approved CPD is a fantastic opportunity for members to educate these professions about what we do, which is essential if we are to become an integral part of building projects. Finally, the market research study and technology conference are both insightful and hugely relevant if we are to understand our industry, the future of technology in general and where we are going.

the CEDIA US Expo. It is an essential part of the CI calendar where new products are launched and everyone involved in the industry is there. I am delighted that CEDIA supports ISE as the main event in its calendar as ISE is a fantastic opportunity for CEDIA to promote the association to the rest of the region. What are you looking forward to most about ISE 2014? After the success of ISE 2013 and the value my technicians, sales and project management teams received from the show, I am flying the whole James & Giles team to ISE 2014. I am looking forward to seeing new product launches, meeting suppliers and also attending the Control4 Awards where we are nominated again!

AWARD-WINNING CINEMA IS LICENSED TO THRILL CEDIA training at Integrated Systems Europe enabled one installation firm to create “the atmosphere of a real cinema” for a customer in Cyprus

Having visited ISE every year since it began eleven years ago, it is fair to say that Cypriot-based installation company, Lifestyle Technologies has learnt a great deal of key information at the show. By attending various training courses and seminars, and taking note of new products which have been launched each year, it is an event that the team look forward to. This year, Lifestyle Technologies implemented their skills on a project, which resulted in them winning top prize in the Best Home Cinema £40,000-£100,000 category at the CEDIA Awards 2013. The judges were impressed with the ‘007’ themed home cinema which exudes “the ambience of a real cinema”. Lifestyle Technologies faced a tough challenge – to create a purpose-built, high-end home theatre which would give the client a breathtaking cinematic experience and convey a genuine sense of luxury and quality. As a huge fan of James Bond, the client was keen that the space be themed to reflect his favourite spy hero. After attending a Home Cinema Design Workshop at 32 | RISE 2014

ISE in 2011, the Lifestyle Technologies team was able to put what they learnt into practice on this project. Starting with an empty concrete shell, the installer took care to create the optimum room layout, seating arrangement and technology specification to ensure the entire audience would be completely immersed in their cinema experience. The family intended to use the room daily, to enjoy watching movies, sport and live TV with friends, so the largest possible seating capacity was required. As the room was narrow, with a fairly low ceiling, Lifestyle Technologies recommended a stadium seating arrangement, with three curved steps to elevate the rear seats because the screen height was restricted. The focus of the room is a 133” Da-Lite microperforated screen with automatically adjusted masking to suit all picture formats. The JVC DLA-RS60 Reference Series THX projector produces a crystal clear image in 2D and 3D. The family has a large collection of DVDs and Blu-rays, so a 10-Terabyte Mozaex Media Server

has been installed to enable efficient, easy storage and management. A Crestron Procise surround sound processor and matching amplifier drive the 7.2 speaker setup to deliver 400 watts of power per channel. Meanwhile, a Monitor Audio Platinum Series speaker system, including six surrounds and two active subwoofers, fill the room with atmospheric sounds of the highest quality. The custom installer worked closely with both the interior and lighting designer for the project to integrate the engineering, acoustics and overall look of the room. Sound absorbers and diffusers have been hidden behind decorative panelling and AcousticsFirst Cutting Wedge 2000 Acoustical Foam cleverly hides the speakers without blocking the sound clarity. All ‚black box‘ equipment is housed in a 19” rack located in a server room adjacent to the theatre for easy access. James Bond scenes, incorporating the owner‘s face, have been transformed into fabricated posters to bring the 007 theme to life whilst beautiful seats, perfect for the classic Bond villain, complete the look and provide definitive viewing comfort. After being impressed by CINEAK’s range of cinema seats at ISE, Lifestyle Technologies

specified four of its luxury leather seats. The creative lighting design includes star-field fibre optic lights in a drop ceiling, LED step-lights within the fitted carpets, cove lights; and display lights. Lighting has been set up to dim through a Lutron Homeworks system, creating the right atmosphere for every occasion. All systems are integrated through a Creston 3 Series control system and accessed either from a Crestron TPMC-3X Wi-Fi touch panel remote or an iPad using the Crestron Mobile Pro G app. At a touch of a button the show starts: lights dim; projection and sound systems turn on; and the HVAC switches to a pre-set temperature. Then, a movie is selected from the on-screen list, the masking automatically adjusts to the size of the picture and the audience is immersed into the film. The installer endeavoured to bring all the elements of the brief together including aesthetics, technical design and ambience. The end result is a cinema with a real ‚wow‘ factor which, remarkably, was built within a very tight budget. The client feels as though he‘s in „James Bond‘s private cinema“ and enjoys an experience that leaves him and his family both shaken and stirred.

About CEDIA and the CEDIA Awards CEDIA is an international trade organisation, spanning three continents with a global membership of over 3,500 companies. CRYSTAL CLEAR VISION Attendance at ISE and InfoComm membership proved key drivers behind the development of ‘The Crystal’ – a sustainable cities initiative for Siemens at London’s Royal Victoria Dock…

Showcasing what was billed as “the world’s largest exhibition dedicated to the future of cities”, The Crystal serves as home to Siemens’ Center of Competence – Cities, a team of multi-disciplinary urban experts. The 2,000 sq.m. (21,500 sq. ft.) interactive exhibition guides visitors through the urban infrastructure of the future by examining the possibilities for sustainable mobility, building technologies, power and water supplies and healthcare. Designed and produced by exhibition designers, Event Communications, the exhibition features extensive audio-visual systems engineered and installed by Electrosonic. “The exhibition had to showcase technologies being developed to support the drive for sustainable urban infrastructure projects, with a wealth of information to portray about some complex and very topical subjects. From the early concept stages, we knew that we would need a wide range of AV technologies to tell the stories and allow visitors to explore case studies and options,” said Kevin Murphy, Development Director, Event Communications Ltd, London. “The Siemens brand story is rich and complex, driven by strategy and vision, and an early visit to ISE in Amsterdam helped us to review two key technologies that would form an integral part of the exhibition design, and the technology strategy we would eventually adopt. As Development Director, one key role is to show and illustrate technologies to our design team, and every year we use ISE as a platform to look at technologies in action and in development, and to discuss applications with manufacturers.” Electrosonic has been an InfoComm member for 34 | RISE 2014

over 12 years and has exhibited at ISE and InfoComm trade shows for many years. “These shows give us the opportunity to show our clients all the latest technologies on the market in just a few days. Seeing all the technologies side-by-side helps our clients to speed up their decision making process and ensure they choose the right technologies to meet their individual business challenges,” explained Sarah Joyce, Vice President, EMEA at Electrosonic. The tradeshow also provides Electrosonic staff with the opportunity to attend InfoComm training courses, discover new technologies and apply them to current and future projects. “Due to the rapid and continual changes in technology our staff will always learn something new at ISE to help them perform their jobs to the highest of standards.” “InfoComm’s membership brings many benefits to Electrosonic’s business, staff and clients. Their extensive education and training programme ensure Electrosonic’s engineers, project managers and sales teams receive the highest quality training the industry can provide. The information provided on InfoComm’s training courses is current, practical and accurate, giving our clients assurance that the Electrosonic team will complete the project on time and to the highest standard. The varied topics and levels of educational resources available, white papers, videos, webinars, round tables etc, make it suitable for staff who are new to the AV industry through to those who are already highly experienced and qualified but want to stay abreast of the latest trends, techniques and information. “ISE is a perfect opportunity for our clients to

meet all the different AV vendors we have developed close working relationships with over our 49 years in the industry. In a short space of time clients can see thousands of different AV, VC and UC technologies and identify the most suitable solutions for their projects and challenges. With such an array of technologies being displayed, the event helps to inspire both staff and clients alike of what is possible now and in the future.” “Lastly, ISE is a great place to network. Attracting the best of the AV industry, ISE really is the place to go to catch up with old colleagues and friends, meet new contacts and network with industry experts.” Electrosonic operates in three key markets, Entertainment, Corporate and Control Rooms, each which have their own technological requirements. “Throughout the many years Electrosonic have been attending ISE our technical designers, engineers, sales consultants and project managers have learnt and adopted many of the new technologies on show. This has enabled us to advise attractions designers, consultants and end users to implement the correct and most cost effective AV solution into their chosen environment, including that of The Crystal,” concluded Joyce. The theme ‘Forces of Change’ is announced when visitors enter the exhibition and are directed to the mezzanine level. There, an immersive black box theatre uses ten DLP projectors to create a dynamic presentation displaying the challenges of Demographic Change, Urbanisation and Climate Change in short video loops. Outside the black box theatre, three touchscreen exhibits further explore the challenging Forces of Change. In the Urbanisation exhibit, four 55-inch touchscreen LCDs in portrait mode are sandwiched between poured concrete slabs. The Climate Change exhibit uses four embedded 32-inch touchscreen LCDs also in portrait format. The Demographic Change exhibit has a threesided configuration with widescreen LCD touchscreens comprising two of the sides. Visitors receive an RFID-tagged card allowing them to collect “crystals” for each exhibit they visit. They first enter the Forces of Change zone on the Mezzanine level, where an immersive black box theatre uses ten DLP projectors to create a dynamic presentation displaying the challenges of Demographic Change, Urbanisation and Climate Change. Accompanied by a multi-channel soundtrack, the projected images fill a screen that covers an end wall and carpets the floor. Outside the theater, three touchscreen exhibits further explore the challenges facing cities. After learning the Forces of Change, visitors traverse the other zones to discover Our Urban Future. The Creating Cities zone features the “Cities Icon” crafted from LED panels displaying images received from the control room, and the multi-user “City Game” whose four 24-inch LCD touch terminals are capped by 55-inch repeater displays. The Safe and Sound zone features the “Fire Prevention” exhibit; giant, cut-out lettering on modules spell words related to the security theme, while three interactive terminals enable visitors to modify a big, curved low-resolution LED display of flames with their responses.

Launching The Crystal with 3D mapping Bluman Associates were contracted by Innovision, London based creative communications agency, delivered the projection for the opening of the Siemens Crystal building. The technically challenging show included 3D mapping, using the entire front facia of the building as a canvas. Some 20 projectors were used to create the spectacular with images visible from all angles of the building. Pod Bluman, Managing Director of Bluman Associates, explained: “This project has been the epitome of high end production and creative brains getting together to design a truly spectacular effect and memorable opening for the building.” Bluman has attended ISE for a number of years. “We attend ISE because of the networking. There is always a possibility that we may learn something new or see a new technology that we have not already heard about.”

The Smart Buildings zone is dominated by a cube-shaped space in which three sides display five-meter wide projected images. In front of each, a 40-inch LCD touchscreen invites visitors to create their own sustainable buildings. Another exhibit featuring two touchscreen displays and LED indicators shows what makes the Crystal a sustainable building. The Keep Moving zone presents the role of electrically powered transport through LCD and interactive displays. The Future Life zone is centered on an optimistic panoramic show, “Enter the City of the Future,” which is displayed on a nine-metre curved screen by three DLP projectors with short-throw zoom lenses, and shows how cities could look and operate if ideas presented in the Crystal were to be applied. This final zone also features terminals where visitors can review their tour based on the data on their RFID card. Electrosonic provided a show control system that has a comprehensive interface and scheduler for full control of individual exhibits, along with global power up/down facilities to enhance the building’s green energy credentials. d&b audiotechnik launches new column loudspeakers The xC-Series introduces column loudspeakers to the d&b audiotechnik installation specific White range. The 16C, 24C and 24C-E seamlessly integrate into difficult acoustic and aesthetic environments, from houses of worship to conference halls, auditoriums and public spaces. The xC-Series incorporates high speech intelligibility with an unobtrusive appearance, utilising high vertical directivity control to focus the output to the listeners and reduce dispersion into the reverberant field. The passive cardioid design achieves directivity control in the horizontal plane down to low frequencies, increasing gain before feedback and minimising unwanted reflections from behind the loudspeaker. The xC-Series compromises nothing; the ability to mount loudspeakers flat and parallel to walls while aiming dispersion down to the listening plane. The HF array in the 24C has a nominal vertical dispersion of 20° and its main axis can be adjusted continuously between 0° and -14°. The 24C-E is an extension for use with the 24C, increasing pattern control down to 190Hz. For smaller applications, the 16C completes the range. Stand 7-C205

A FEW OF OUR FAVOURITE THINGS

Ian McMurray talks to a selection of ISE exhibitors to discover what they like most about the Amsterdam event Lars-Olof Janflod Marketing and PR Director, Genelec What I most like is the diversity of exhibits and, due to that, the diversity of visitors. ISE is one of few exhibitions where we meet people we haven‘t met before and people who don’t know who we are. It’s hard not to like the fact that the visitor numbers are increasing year-on-year and we see this amazing growth.

Tim Burnham President, Tempest What I most like about ISE is that you get to meet the people who matter from all over Europe, and at a single event. We exhibited for the first time at ISE 2013 and were blown away by the quantity and quality of visitors to our stand. ISE is definitely a permanent fixture in Tempest’s marketing calendar.

Desirée Webster Marketing Manager, NuVo Technologies Each year I’m impressed by not just the consistent quality, but by the continued progression towards a larger, more engaging, more vibrant show. The unique opportunity to see our international customers would be invaluable anywhere, but we could not ask for a better setting.

Hartmut Kulessa Marketing Manager, Projector Products, Panasonic ISE is not only the reference exhibition for AV in Europe, but also has a global importance. It offers us a very strong focus on vertical markets; allows us to meet with all our partners across Europe; and is a major platform to announce new products, demonstrate our latest technologies and share our strategy and vision with our industry partners.

Trusha Shah Senior Product Manager, Optoma Under the canopy of the RAI, everyone in the world of AV comes together to see the latest innovations. The ability to showcase and project our latest technology and meet current and future customers is the reward for months of developing new products. It’s among the busiest three days of the year. Let the fun begin! Fredrik Sjostedt VP of Corporate Marketing, Barco Our favourite thing about ISE? The international crowds and the positive vibes. Every AV professional visiting our booth is eager to discover our products and hear how we can help them stand out from the crowd. And, at the end of the day, they’re more than happy to make the world of AV come alive at our much-loved Belgian Beer Bar.

Eric Hénique Director of Marketing and International Sales, eyevis Planners, architects, integrators and end users from all over the world visit ISE. Often, they have specific questions for current projects which we can support with useful solutions. ISE is the most important industry event for the AV sector. Stuart Tickle Managing Director, AWE The sheer scale of the show is what I like most about ISE; it’s always a hugely exciting date in the calendar. The importance of getting our products in front of an expanding yet targeted audience is crucial.
