Local recreation, both indoor and outdoor spaces, are special places that provide us opportunities to experience a physical activity that may become a new favorite hobby or pastime. Recreational experiences offer places and a time to gather with friends and family, connect with our community, or a space for celebrations and healing. Research shows those involved in recreational activities are healthier physically and mentally. Recreation counters social isolation by connecting people, regardless of age, income, political affiliation.

Community Education offers a variety of recreation experiences within our community. We were excited to open our indoor playground, Shenanigans, in October. This space provides opportunities for all ages to climb, slide and explore. We will also be adding more recreation in this space such as a climbing wall and laser tag starting this winter! Alexandria Area Gymnastics, located in a new facility within DMS, is a recreational opportunity for students 18 months10th grade. We have various other youth recreational opportunities for you to explore this winter such as boys and girls basketball, introduction to basketball, indoor rally tennis, and make sure to be on the lookout for youth volleyball pop-up camps.

Community Education also offers a variety of recreation for our adults. Have you tried pickleball yet? Might you need to work on your flexibility?

Grief and Loss: A Tool for Recovery

For those dealing with difficult feelings of grief, loss, deep sadness, anger and even fear, this class provides a take-home technique to be used immediately to foster the healing process. People who are actively grieving can sometimes feel wounded. Emotional Freedom Technique (Tapping) can be like applying a soothing salve. Grief is hard work, and it wouldn’t be so difficult if the people we lost weren’t so very important to us. “Tapping” won’t cure grief and loss but it will release emotional blockages and help regulate emotions through the healing process. This class is intended for people who lost a loved one more than six months ago.
