THE BEAUTY OF THE MANDALA

The word mandala itself simply means “circle” in Sanskrit. Definitions of mandala include any of various geometric designs (usually circular) symbolizing the universe. Mandalas are an ancient art form that spread across Asia some two thousand years ago. Drawing and coloring mandala is now recognized around the globe as a fabulous aid to meditation and relaxation. During my class, you’ll discover a wide range of design elements inspired by traditional Asian mandalas. By the end of the class, you’ll have all the knowledge you need to continue drawing mandalas, making each one unique. Handouts will provide resources to begin a library of symbols and design elements for ongoing inspiration. No drawing experience needed. Students should bring: pencil, rubber eraser, ruler, compass, protractor, Micron pen black permanent ink .03 or .05. and art medium for adding color such as color pencils, watercolor pencils, or watercolor markers.

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO BEGIN AGAIN

“It is Never Too Late to Begin Again” is a four-part workshop using unconventional practices to effortlessly awaken the freedom, delight, and reward for you and your creative process. Using some of the themes in Julia Cameron’s book (of the same title) will be explored in this course. Procrastination, perfectionism, feeling resistance are just a few issues that may be holding you back from a desire to do something you have thought you wanted to do. (Not just artistically!) Guiding ourselves is tricky without feeling resistance, pressure, self-sabotage. - a structured, non-competitive, nurturing group makes it easier. Plus, it’s fun. The course includes hands-on, creative experiences to encourage momentum and follow-through in an explorative, non-judgmental, and flexible way. This is for all levels of artists and writers from intimidated beginners to seasoned creatives wanting a fresh approach.

What is in it for you:

• Finding more mindfulness (peace of mind, freedom, contentment, self-compassion, love of life) while going deeper with your creativity

• Losing yourself in the timeless, ageless, process of creativity - a process that can flourish and keep us amused for the rest of our lives.

• Laughing AND being inspired for four weeks with kindred, supportive people.

• Artful prompts for creating drawings, collage, writing, and whatever else.

Participants should bring a journal/sketchbook (size up to you), writing instruments, media for color such as (markers, colored pencils) to the first class.

Instructor: Kathy Grundei

DRAWING IN THE GARDEN

You may have heard about “mindfulness” and being “present in the moment.” These ideas can feel foreign to our busy, overscheduled lives, but their premise is simple: We need to pay attention to what is happening around us. Slow down. Notice things about the natural world that you previously overlooked. The Legacy Garden is the perfect place to discover your inner artist and learn new skills.

Your sketchbook will be a place for putting pen, pencil and other drawing tools to paper to observe aspects of nature with curiosity and attention. Artistic expression of color, shape, texture will be the focus. We will play with ways to alter sketchbook pages. All drawing abilities are welcome!

Participants should bring their own sketchbook, pencil, art medium for adding color (such as: small watercolor set, colored pencils, watercolor pencils, etc.) Also bring a water bottle and comfortable outdoor chair. Dress for the weather, a sunhat is suggested.

TAI CHI IN THE GARDEN

Join us at the beautiful Legacy of the Lakes Garden for Tai Chi this summer during your lunch break. Tai chi is a mind-body energy practice that comes under the broader category of qi gong (CHEE-gung). The aim for qi gong practice is improvement in qi balance. This is acquired through specific exercises based on three main principles - harmonizing the breath, harmonizing one’s posture and movement, and harmonizing one’s mind. Tai chi and qi gong practices often combine rhythmic movements, breathing techniques, and focused attention. The movements in Tai Chi are performed in a slow manner accompanied by deep breathing. Some studies have shown Tai Chi having many health benefits. This class will introduce you to the basics of Tai Chi so you will be able to develop your own practice. Comfortable clothing is encouraged, and if you have any health concerns, we recommend you talk with your healthcare provider first.
