GENGREEN EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS Programme Title: Sustainable Waste Management

Target Group: Young people

Organisation: Organization Earth

Duration: 2 to 4 hours per session, adaptable based on the depth of activities, can be extended into a series

Summary It explores practical solutions for managing household organic waste and reducing food waste, promoting the circular economy. Participants will learn how to minimise food waste at home, turn organic scraps into compost, and upcycle old materials. As a practical activity, they will plant aromatic herbs in pots made from upcycling materials using compost. In this way, they will strengthen sustainable consumption habits while deepening their understanding of food waste's environmental, economic, and social impacts.

Description Introduction & Icebreaker: Introduction to the circular economy and discussion on daily waste habits. Composting Workshop: Exploring composting theory and practice (3 phases of composting). Hands-On Upcycling Activity: Participants paint and decorate their own planters using upcycled materials. Planting Aromatics: Soil preparation and herb planting using compost on the upcycling materials. Reflection Circle: Sharing takeaways and personal commitments toward sustainable living.

Objectives 1.Raise awareness on the importance of waste reduction at the household level. 2.Promote the principles and benefits of organic farming and composting. 3.Foster environmental awareness and sustainable living. 4.Equip young people with sustainable knowledge and practical skills. 5.Inspire creativity through upcycling and the reuse of materials.

Challenges Sourcing enough compostable materials in advance. Ensuring safety and hygiene when handling organic waste.

Impact Hands-on skills in composting and upcycling. Increased awareness of waste reduction and sustainable lifestyles. Behavioural change toward mindful consumption and food planning. Visible impact through the creation of upcycled herb planters. Each participant takes home their own herb pot, encouraging them to care for it and continue the cycle of sustainable living by learning how to take care and grow their plant over time.
