GENGREEN EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS Programme Title: Carbon Literacy Training

Target Group: 16+ years old

Organisation: Protect Our Winters Europe

Duration: 8 hours divided into either 4 sessions or 2 sessions.

Summary This programme of POW UK delivers 8 hours of learning under the accredited, international project Carbon Literacy. In this, students will understand the science of climate change and its impacts, what it specifically looks like for the outdoor community, what the global challenge looks like and finally, what action looks like. This course quite thoroughly explores action from the individual to the company to the government. There are activities and videos throughout the 8 hours to break up the learning. Only POW UK delivers it.

Description POW connects participants to outdoor sports and introduces key climate science and impacts, linking them to nature. It covers global climate governance and policies, then explores four action levels, from individuals to friends/family to the government to financial action, using a ski slope metaphor. A ‘Objections’ activity helps tackle climate myths. The course concludes with an assessment to reinforce learning.

Objectives 1.To teach the outdoor community about what climate change is. 2.To motivate the outdoor community to act on the climate.

Challenges The main challenge is finding and training facilitators who know the subject and can engage small groups (up to 10). Trainer personality is key to making a lasting impact. The course ends with an assessment on net zero and related actions, though some participants struggle to define these and gauge their impact.

Impact The climate objections activity is the most valuable learning experience for participants, as it helps them become more confident discussing climate issues. Over 400 people have been trained through our specific Carbon Literacy training, with thousands more trained overall through Carbon Literacy programmes.
