GENGREEN EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS Programme Title: Athlete Communication Training Target Group: Professional athletes Organisation: Protect Our Winters Europe
Duration: 1- 2.5 hours
Summary A bespoke course designed to teach professional athletes, who are major role models, how to speak confidently about issues close to their hearts, ideally including the climate crisis. The course consists of various modules that can be adapted and combined to best engage the audience.
Description The course is composed of five parts: 1.The main presentation (1 hour):outlining the climate landscape from scientific, political, and sociological perspectives, including the potential role of athletes; 2.Social media training (30 min): to give guidelines and examples of using your voice; 3.How to Google s##t (10-15 mins): third, guidance on how to search for and verify information; 4.Climate misinformation (30 mins): recognising and responding to common climate misinformation; 5.Storytelling (20 mins):storytelling techniques to transform personal experiences into powerful messages.
Objectives 1.To lay out the landscape of climate change from a scientific, societal and political perspective 2.To make professional athletes feel comfortable and driven to talk about issues close to their heart (i.e. climate change)
Challenges Finding talented public speakers who bring their own unique style to the delivery. Sharing personal experience and guiding the conversation does not come naturally to everyone, especially when presenting in a second language.
Impact The greatest impact is that athletes begin posting and reposting POW campaigns. This significantly extends our reach due to the multiplier effect. A Tip: For a presentation to be impactful, it needs to have a clear and consistent thread throughout. To support facilitators without the need for personal training, a Google Drive has been created where past facilitators can share tips and tricks.
