from the head of school

As I reflect on this past year, my first at ISB, I feel we have a lot to be proud of, starting with our year-end results. For example, our seniors all succeeded in earning either the French or the International Baccalaureate. On the French side, the class average was a commendable 14 out of 20, with two Highest Honors, four High Honors, and four Honors. In all, 10 students out of 13 received honors. For the I.B., the number of students was smaller, but the results were no less impressive, with an average score of 35, which is 5 points above the world average. The results of the Brevet exams in ninth grade were also excellent. In this case, all of the students who took the tests obtained honors, with 6 Highest Honors, 12 High Honors, and 6 Honors. It was also a fine year in college admissions. The full list of acceptances and matriculations appears on page 12 of this report. In terms of our own admissions, this was the first year that our Upper School—which is only about ten years old—enrolled 100 or more students, and we anticipate considerable further enrollment growth in the division for the coming year. It is wonderful to see our newest division finally come into its own. We also had one of our best years ever for fundraising. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we opened the newly renovated East Wing of the fourth floor in September as the first stage of our grand library/media center project. The East Wing contains a full-sized classroom, two seminar rooms, a college counseling office and a large casual study area. The library itself will occupy the center octagon, and it will also serve as an elegant space for concerts and gatherings. We envision this as the focal point of the Cambridge campus and hope, if fundraising goes well, to open it in a year. At the end of the year, we said good-bye to Paul Romeo, who retired to France after nine years as Director of the Maternelle. We all came to appreciate his wisdom, experience, charm, and willingness to help wherever possible, from comforting a child to dealing with the heating. We wish him well in his return to the Corrèze, just as we are pleased to welcome his successor, Sophie Fontana, who came to us from the French school in Scottsdale, Arizona, after prior experience as an educator both in France and abroad. In sum, 2010-2011 was a very good year. Since success tends to build on success, let us anticipate that the coming school year may be even better, as we begin preparations for the celebration of the school’s fiftieth birthday in 2012. Certainly we have laid the foundations for a splendid second half-century! Sincerely,

Dr. Richard Blumenthal

2010–2011 financial aid The International School of Boston allocates 6% of its budget to direct financial assistance to families, reducing the cost of tuition for 56 students, with a total budget of $670,000 for the fiscal year 2010-2011. The same year, the AEFE (Agence pour l’Enseignement Français à l’Etranger) distributed a total amount of $1,130,000 to 84 ISB families. Furthermore, the financial support of the French authorities, a procedure called “prise en charge,” allocated an amount of $560,000 towards the scholarship of 30 French students, from grades 10 to 12, preparing the French baccalaureate.

Altogether, more than 30% of the ISB students benefited from financial aid. On behalf of these students and their families, the International School of Boston is truly thankful to its partners, the Consulate General of France in Boston and the AEFE for their assistance and support.

pto fundraising What Do The Following Have In Common?

The funds raised by the Bread Sales, the Clothing sale, the Holiday Baskets and the Holiday Boutique are restricted to the ISB Enrichment Program for the students. What is the ISB Enrichment Program?

Built on the premise that “plenty of learning occurs outside the classroom,” the ISB Enrichment Program provides students with workshops and productions designed to enrich their lives, from Pre-K to Grade 12. Here are just a few examples of what the children enjoyed in the 2010-2011 school year. Maternelle: Kidstock—Engaging storytellers involve the children in “living” the story. Lower School: Tanglewood Marionettes—Lavish productions and stories featuring beautiful handcrafted

marionettes, scrolling sets and exotic music. Middle School: Cyberbullying—Understand Cyberspace and appropriate ways to interact within it. Upper School: Latin Rhythms—Experience Latin America through its rhythms and language.

renovating the east wing

With growing enrollment in the Upper School, it became important to develop a proper, dedicated space where students could research, study, read, interact and stay after class to work on projects. Therefore, 2600 square feet were renovated during summer 2011 for a total cost of $295,000.

Did we miss you?

This Annual Report contains all gifts received between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011. The lists have been made with tremendous gratitude and care. Names may appear more than once. This is not a mistake, as we always list names in as many categories as applicable. However, if an error has been made, please accept our sincere apologies and notify the ISB Development Office.
