Jean Baudrillard
Baudrillard claims, that simulation is the current stage of the simulcarum. In other words all is composed of refferences with no refrents, which is a hyperreaity. (Simulation generally refers to a process in motion, whereas simulacrum (plural simulacra) refers to a more static image). Jean Baudrillard has proven to be an important influence on postmodern theorists and artists, making his presence felt from Fredric Jameson’s Postmodernism to the Wachowski brothers’ The Matrix. Like Jameson, Baudrillard paints a rather bleak picture of our current postmodern condition, arguing that we have lost contact with the “real” in various ways, that we have nothing left but a continuing fascination with its disappearance. His vision is highly dystopic. In Baudrillard’s version of postmodernity, there is hardly any space for opposition or resistance because of the supreme hegemony of the controlling system
Andrew Goodwin
Andrew goodwin states that there are 3 key aspects to a music video, but only two link to my coursework. These are: relationship between the song and visuals, narrative and perfomace of the song, and technical aspect of the music video. Relationship between the narrative amd performace of the song: Andrew Goodwin believed that it was important for an artist to be involved in the music video by performing or acting out a role as the main character or singer. It helps to make the song look more realistic and also giving the audience a special connecting and good understanding of the song. This will relate to my coursework as I’m wanting my band to perform their song. As well as filming in the black box, I will use footage from one of their gigs, which means the aduience can get a feel for what it is like at one of their concerts. Technical aspect of the music video: Andrew says that the technical aspect helps to hold the music video together through the use of Mise-en-Scene, Special effects sound and editing. Lighting will help set the mood. So using the black box will allow me to creater a dark space which is typcial with indie music videos. Mise-en-scene can help the make the band stand out so it is vital for them to wear clothes that link to the indie genre. And lastly sound and editing. These are the most vital aspects as they make your video what it is. Different shots can help convey different meanings,
John Fiske
John Fiske says, “Genre attempts to structure some order into the wide range of texts and meanings that circulate in our culture for the convenience of both producers and audiences� You will find that people will categorize events that occur in their lives with references to media texts they have consumed before. For example if a something paranormal such as a door closing by itself or an object falling off a shelf with no one there was to happen, people would tend to refer to ghosts and may reference films such as paranormal activity or Sinister. As for an action thriller film, the audience would expect there to the a chase scene or a gun fight within scenes. Fiske mentions that genre is a way of categorising texts in media and prepares audiences expectations. Genre is made up of conventions which are the typical features that belong to the genre such as the setting, roles, events and so on. These conventions construct the genre and are constantly repeated through each movie that fall into the category. An example of this is the use of guns throughout Inception, the Bourne films and the Matrix. The films also feature chase and choreographed fight scenes and these are what construct the action genre. As for the thriller side of the film, all the characters have either had a tormented past i.e. relatives/love ones passed away, or they have a chance to make a change such as Neo in the Matrix who is trying to save the world and the inhabitants of the world they are brainwashed to thinking is real. These features of the film are what construct the thriller side of action-thriller, audiences then feel more immersed in the film as they tend to question what they would do in these situations. This relates to my cousrwork as I would use the main conventions of an indie muisc video so that when people come to watch it, they know straight away that it is indie based.
