SMILE AVENUE SMILE AVENUE

Smile Avenue in Meridian, Idaho, is a client-driven design for Dr. Timothy Balzen. Right from the project's inception, Dr. Balzen actively contributed his insights, drawing from his past experiences in various dental offices. A pivotal aspect of our design approach centered on optimizing the flow within the premises, particularly the hallway. Driven by Dr. Balzen's preference for seamless accessibility, we crafted a circular flow design ensuring quick access from his office to every operatory room. It was also critical to have two dentists in the office, which meant more operatory rooms, along with private restrooms for each dentist. This dentist's office is for patients aged 12 and up, so he wanted it to feel sophisticated but include pops of color.

The Abrahams' kitchen was designed for the Sub Zero Wolf design competition. With a vision to blend culinary arts with social connectivity, the homeowners aimed to transform their kitchen into a hub of conversation, bridging the gap between cooking and living. No longer content with facing a window in isolation, they envisioned a space where culinary creativity could unfold amidst the flow of shared moments. Central to their desires was a pantry that not only offered functionality but also concealed the chaos of culinary experimentation, allowing the kitchen to retain its pristine allure.

As the designer, my main goal was simple: to create a kitchen design that just felt right for everyday living. It was imperative that the kitchen seamlessly integrated with the surrounding living spaces, ensuring that no one felt excluded, regardless of culinary endeavors. Drawing inspiration from the idyllic charm of the French countryside, a vision emerged through collaboration with the clients. Earthy hues and rustic textures became the palette, evoking a sense of tranquility and warmth. Despite the spatial constraints, creativity flourished. Maximizing every inch of the 300 square feet available, we strategically placed a generously sized island, transforming it into a multifunctional centerpiece that optimized both workspace and social interaction.

Nestled in the heart of Portree on the picturesque Isle of Skye, The Wooly Sheep Hotel exudes charm and character. This boutique hotel, though small in size, boasts a bold and distinctive personality. The decision to renovate a pre-existing home into this delightful establishment was a stroke of brilliance. Inspired by the vibrant hues that adorn the buildings along Portree's shoreline, the hotel's aesthetic paints a vivid and captivating scene. With just five bedrooms, The Wooly Sheep Hotel fosters an intimate atmosphere, allowing guests the opportunity to forge meaningful connections with fellow travelers. Drawing inspiration from the endearing sheep that roam the island's landscape, every aspect of the hotel's design reflects this quaint and endearing motif. From the cozy interiors to the thoughtful details, guests are enveloped in a sense of warmth and tranquility that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Skye.

HORIZON HEIGHTS HORIZON HEIGHTS

Nestled gracefully along the tranquil banks of the Boise River lies Horizon Heights Apartments, a sanctuary for refugees seeking temporary housing. Upon their arrival in Boise, refugees have the opportunity to transition seamlessly into these welcoming apartments, offering respite for up to a month as they embark on their journey to find more permanent accommodations. Traditionally, refugees often find themselves housed in hotels upon their initial arrival, a costly arrangement that can quickly deplete their limited resources. However, Horizon Heights offers a practical alternative, providing a comfortable haven at a mere fraction of the expense, equivalent to just one-quarter the price of a single hotel night. This economical choice empowers refugees to manage their finances more effectively, affording them the crucial opportunity to save for future housing deposits or down payments.

Spanning 1,125 square feet, each apartment at Horizon Heights includes three bedrooms, each complemented by its own ensuite bathroom. Additionally, residents enjoy the convenience of a fully-equipped kitchen, a cozy living area, and a designated dining space, fostering a sense of home and stability during their transitional period. Strategically situated along the picturesque Boise River, Horizon Heights offers unparalleled access to the vibrant downtown scene, including an array of parks and the scenic Greenbelt pathway tracing the river’s edge. This prime location ensures that residents can fully immerse themselves in all that Boise has to offer, enhancing their sense of belonging and community integration.

GLASS HOUSE GLASS HOUSE

Working with Caleb Anderson on our visiting designer projectJunior year. We were tasked with renovating one of Drake Anderson’s previous projects a glass house in upstate New York. Our client is a best-selling author and host of the Highest Self Podcast, Sahara Rose. The house is meant to be a wellness escape to help her along her wellness journey which includes yoga, meditation, and ayurvedic nutritional cooking practice. Her goal is for this home to be a toxic-free, healing retreat where she can feel submerged in nature.

Pulling from nature for my color pallet to ground the project I decided to take inspiration from your book Bold and use more rich forms of each of these colors to create a bold design. Sahara’s dosha is Vata, the Ayurvedic mind-body element associated with air and space. Because Vata dosha is cool, light, and dry, it benefits from things that are warming, grounding, and nurturing.

Orange is the main color that I incorporated throughout the house. Orange which characterizes the sacral chakra embodies our sexual awareness, creativity, and emotions. In some instances, this has been referred to as the teenager chakra. This is because it evokes a strong emotion and powerful sexuality. Typically, in spaces focused on wellness and meditation, most people would think of soft muted colors but for a young vibrant woman like Sahara, she needed a space that oozes an energetic personality to help express her inner self. Not only did I use bold colors, but I also used bold designs. Funky is the word I kept going back to when designing this house.

When I designed this rug I drew inspiration from the formation of rocks to create an organic free-flowing pattern. In life, we constantly add new layers to ourselves as we grow, learn, and have new experiences. Each layer forms over a different amount of time and has different pressures added. In the moment of a new layer forming, it’s hard to see the beauty but in the end, you are left with a masterpiece.

Designed a 1,000 sq ft house for a couple. The concept for the house design came when I abstraced the shape of a pumpkin. The architecture mimicks the vertical and horizontal curves seen on a pumpkin. The project included construction documents, presentaion drawings, computer generated renderings, and a physical foamcore model as well as a 3d revit model.
