2024–25 YEAR IN REVIEW

OUR MISSION

Irvine Barclay Theatre is a leading presenter of performances by diverse and exceptional artists, providing a state-of-the-art venue for community cultural organizations and university programs, and broadening the scope, availability and appreciation of performing arts in Orange County.

Dear Friends,

I am pleased to share with you this year’s Irvine Barclay Theatre Year in Review. As the staff and I look forward to celebrating the theater’s 35th season, it is important to keep in mind the many ways in which the Barclay served Orange County this season.

The Barclay is, first and foremost, an intimate venue for our community’s social, artistic and educational activities. Each year more than fifty percent of all events at the Barclay are created for the community and presented to the community by a wide spectrum of local businesses, individuals, and non-profit organizations. On the following pages you’ll see inspiring pictures from some of the more than 100 community programs that took place this year.

Second, the Barclay supports many public-facing activities of UC Irvine. Twenty-five percent of events taking place in the Barclay are those with UC Irvine roots that are open to the community. In addition to performances by students from the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, the School of Social Ecology hosts a Dia de Los Muertos festival and the School of Social Sciences a Lunar New Year celebration. This year the School of Law welcomed experts to weigh in during its annual Supreme Court in Review event, and student organizations including Tomo No Kai and Vietnamese Student Association produced inspiring culture nights.

Finally, the venue provides entertaining and memorable experiences of artistic and social importance for the Barclay’s discerning patrons. The 2024–25 Irvine Barclay Theatre Presents season featured nights-to-remember from Yotam Ottolenghi, Tommy Emmanuel, Sutton Foster, Alan Cumming, Amy Tan, Parsons Dance, Hiromi’s Sonicwonder, and the mastery of Wynton Marsalis. Barclay-centric projects including The Barclay Jazz & Beyond Orchestra, the Worah Family Foundation’s Global View Series, Trio Barclay and the Family Series sponsored by the City of Irvine rounded out a season that had something for everyone – from our respected elders to our youngest fans.

Your generosity — as ticket buyers, as donors, as volunteers, as community advocates, or any combination of these — is instrumental in making the Barclay a beloved Orange County performing arts institution. On behalf of the Barclay’s Board of Directors and staff, I extend our sincere gratitude and thanks for choosing to join us on this remarkable journey.

Best regards,

Dancers Making a Difference

Gala for Wildfire Relief

Make a Wish with superstar flutist Jasmine Choi

APRIL 29, 2025

When 16-year-old Matthew, a flutist from Eugene, Oregon, first started playing the flute, he had no idea it would change his life—improving his lung function as he navigated cystic fibrosis and inspiring a dream of a future in music.

Thanks to a collaboration with the Make-a-Wish Foundation, that dream became a little more real at the Barclay, where Matthew had the chance to meet his role model, world-renowned flutist Jasmine Choi after her performance. Their conversation left him with encouragement, advice, and an unforgettable moment of connection through music.

Dancers Making a Difference — A Gala Supporting Wildfire-Affected Communities

MARCH 3, 2025

Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP)—the world’s largest ballet scholarship competition partnered with Irvine Barclay Theatre to present Dancers Making a Difference, a powerful Gala supporting California dance families affected by wildfires.

The one-night-only performance featured extraordinary guest artists Tiler Peck (Principal Dancer, New York City Ballet) and YAGP alumni Elisabeth Beyer (ABT), Joseph Markey (ABT), Isaac Mueller (Boston Ballet), and Tara Ghassemieh (Principal Guest Artist) with Vitor Luiz (Former Principal Dancer, San Francisco Ballet), alongside talented young dancers from across California and beyond.

The Barclay, a proud supporter of dance, was honored to host this unforgettable event, with 100% of proceeds benefiting families in need.

Parsons Master Class

APRIL 16, 2025

The Barclay is proud to collaborate with UC Irvine’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts annually to connect their students with professional ensembles.

Last season, the Barclay presented Parsons Dance, who shared their talent and led a masterclass with dance majors in advance of their main stage concert the following day.

Known for its energized, athletic, and joyous style, Parsons Dance is internationally renowned for creating and performing contemporary American dance. Their bold ensemble work and movement has solidified them as one of the world’s leading dance companies.

FAMILY FUN @ THE BARCLAY

Special thanks to the City of Irvine for sponsoring Family Fun @ the Barclay, helping to provide high-quality family entertainment with economically priced family-pack ticket options throughout the season.

Popovich Comedy Pet Theater kicked off the series with a one-of-a-kind blend of circus-style comedy and remarkable animal performances. Gregory Popovich — a former Moscow Circus star and world-class juggler — brought his cast of over 30 rescue animals, including cats, dogs, and even parrots. Each animal, trained with care and positive reinforcement, dazzled audiences with their natural talents and comedic charm, earning laughter, applause, and plenty of wide-eyed wonder.

Next, Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock LIVE! transformed the Barclay into a vibrant, puppet-filled world. With stunning walk-around Fraggles and delightful new characters created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, this new musical adventure invited audiences into the heart of Fraggle Rock. It was a joyful celebration of friendship, imagination, and music — perfect for longtime fans and first-time theatre-goers alike.

Finally, Doktor Kaboom! delivered a riotous, high-energy science show filled with bubbling beakers, flying smoke rings, and laugh-outloud demonstrations that made physics and chemistry come alive for kids and parents alike.

DONOR PROFILE TOM AND MAYUMI ADAMS

Philanthropic Leadership in Arts, Athletics, and Health

If you’ve been to a jazz performance at Irvine Barclay Theatre in recent years, there’s a good chance you've seen Tom and Mayumi Adams in the audience, in their favorite seats, listening intently and savoring every note. Their presence reflects their deep passion for the arts, particularly jazz, and their commitment to sharing that love with the community.

Tom and Mayumi

Tom Adams is no stranger to supporting meaningful causes. As president and founder of Tiodize, Inc., a hightech aerospace company he launched in 1966, Tom’s success has been matched by a belief in giving back. With his wife Mayumi — herself a former professional athlete and leader in women’s sports education — the couple models philanthropic partnership.

A recent highlight of their arts philanthropy is their support for Shelly Berg, Music Director of The Barclay Jazz and Beyond Orchestra, and Dean of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. A longtime personal friend of Tom’s, Shelly is a celebrated jazz pianist and educator, and a central figure in the Barclay’s jazz programming. When Shelly became music director, it marked the beginning of a transformative era. Today, Berg holds the named position as the Tom and Mayumi Adams Music Director — a testament to the Adams’ visionary support.

Tom and Shelly’s friendship goes back years, grounded in shared appreciation for jazz’s spontaneity and soul. Supporting Berg’s appointment was not simply a gesture of friendship—it was a natural extension of Tom's commitment to championing jazz and encouraging others to experience it live.

“Jazz is alive. It’s immediate, personal, and powerful,” Tom says. “It’s different every night, and that’s the magic of it. When you sit in that audience, you feel connected—to the musicians, to the music, to everyone in the room. That’s why I support the Barclay and why I believe in what Shelly’s doing with The Barclay Jazz and Beyond Orchestra.”

Tom and Mayumi’s support is helping to shape The Barclay Jazz and Beyond Orchestra as a platform for musical exploration, drawing world-class talent from right here in Orange County and curating performances that are ambitious and fun. Their investment has strengthened the Barclay’s position as a cultural hub — not only for Irvine, but for the broader region.

The Adams’ generosity toward the Barclay is part of their broader philanthropic legacy. In 2020, Tom made headlines with a $1 million gift to the University of Miami’s Baseball Facility Enhancement Campaign — the largest gift ever from a former UM baseball student-athlete. The home plate entrance to Alex Rodriguez Park was renamed The Tommy Adams Main Entrance.

Tom’s connection to the University of Miami runs deep. He arrived in 1953 to play baseball and earned a spot in the starting lineup. But financial and academic struggles nearly forced him to leave. Then-head coach Eddie Dunn intervened, helping Tom secure a scholarship and

a path forward. That moment sparked a lasting sense of gratitude. After graduating in 1957 with a business degree, Tom went on to sign with the Philadelphia Phillies and later played with the New York Yankees organization. His baseball career was interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, where he served for two years. Upon returning to civilian life, Tom transitioned from the ballfields to the business world — founding Iodize, which is a global leader in tribology, engineering advanced coatings and materials utilized by NASA, Boeing, the Department of Defense, and countless others.

That same spirit of gratitude carries into other areas of their philanthropy. The Tom & Mayumi Adams Endowed Chair in Orthopedic Surgery at Hoag Orthopedic Institute was established after Tom’s two successful knee replacement surgeries. Those procedures restored his ability to live actively. The endowed chair supports two orthopedic fellows annually and funds programs like Back to Play, which introduces high school students to medical careers.

Tom and Mayumi’s foundation also supports Women’s Major League Softball International. Mayumi cofounded WMLSI to help women softball players pursue professional careers—reflecting on her own experience as both a professional athlete and the organization’s president. She also maintains a strong personal connection to music, with a passion for classical piano, trumpet, and modern Japanese pop, including global superstar Yoshiki.

Tom and Mayumi are not only donors; they’re active participants—attending events, mentoring students, and staying closely connected to the causes in which they believe.

As members of the Barclay’s Premier Patron Society, they are part of a special community of supporters who understand that behind every great performance is a network of people who believe in the shared experience of live performing arts.

The Barclay is proud to honor Tom and Mayumi Adams for their generosity, leadership, and support. They demonstrate how generosity, vision, and personal passion can shape institutions, inspire communities, and ensure that live performing arts continue to thrive.

CELEBRATING OUR FRIENDS

At the heart of Irvine Barclay Theatre’s success is the generosity of our dedicated donors. Their unwavering support allows the Barclay to present world-class performances, expand educational initiatives, and cultivate a thriving cultural community in Orange County. Thanks to their continued investment in the arts, the theater is able to grow, innovate, and inspire. This past season, we honored their contributions through a series of unique and meaningful events designed to celebrate the joy of live performance and the impact of their philanthropy.

To kick off the 2024–25 season, Premier Patron Society members gathered at The Palazzo by Khoshbin. Nestled in the heart of Orange County, this exclusive venue provided a one-of-a-kind backdrop for an evening of art, architecture, and appreciation. Guests enjoyed a private tour of this historically inspired estate while reconnecting with fellow arts champions and Barclay leadership in an elegant atmosphere.

At the heart of Irvine Barclay Theatre’s success is the generosity of our dedicated donors.

In another standout evening, The Barclay Jazz & Beyond Orchestra Reading Rehearsal welcomed devoted jazz lovers for an extraordinary behind-the-scenes experience. Guests dined on stage with the musicians, savoring a meal while witnessing the creative process unfold as the band rehearsed live. The event offered an up-close perspective on the artistry, spontaneity, and collaboration that bring jazz to life.

In the spring, Le Salon, an evening of intimate conversation and thoughtful engagement, was hosted in the stunning home of Premier Patron Society members Judy and Wes Whitmore. The evening featured a compelling talk by Dr. James T. Randerson, the Ralph J. and Carol M. Cicerone Professor of Earth System Science at UCI. Dr. Randerson guided guests through an insightful discussion on climate change and global wildfire trends, sparking reflection on shared responsibility to preserve the planet.

Finally, Donor Movie Night brought families together for a whimsical evening at the Barclay. An appreciation for annual fund members, guests of all ages enjoyed a screening of the beloved classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, complete with complimentary popcorn, candy, and soft drinks. It was a sweet, simple way to say thank you and to remind the Barclay’s supporters that their generosity makes magic possible.
