Michigan to offer two year license plate tabs in October 2022

LANSING, Mich (AP)

Michigan drivers will have the option to renew their vehicle registration every two years instead one under a new law that will take effect in October 2022

Gov Gretchen Whitmer signed the bill Wednesday Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said two year license plate tabs “will add yet another convenient serv ice to our catalog ”

Michigan once imple mented two year registra tions in the early 1980s, but the Department of State reported they were not pop ular with motorists, accord ing to the nonpartisan House Fiscal Agency

Drivers will still be able to renew annually Tabs expire on the owner s birthday

The governor last month signed related legislation to ensure they also will be able to buy an optional two year recreation passport for unlim ited access to state parks, recreation areas boat launch es forest campgrounds and trail parking lots

State this week emphasizes being ready for winter

With winter weather at hand, the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division encourages Michigan residents to prioritize winter emergency preparedness

Gov Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed this to be Winter Hazards Awareness Week in Michigan

“Michiganders should take every opportunity to pre pare for winter weather before it’s here bringing with it the potential for frozen pipes, propane shortages and pow er outages, said Col Joe Gasper, state director of Emer gency Management and Homeland Security, and director of the Michigan State Police “Taking steps to prepare your home and vehicle in advance of the cold weather can help ensure your family stays safe all winter

The state offers these tips for getting ready for winter: To prepare the home

Weatherproof the home by installing weather stripping and caulking and insulating walls doors and windows

Insulate any water lines that run along exterior walls so pipes are less likely to freeze

Lock in a propane rate and have a backup heating plan, such as a generator, wood stove or fireplace

Have gas or oil furnaces inspected by a qualified professional and change the air filter every two to four months

Have the fireplace and chimney cleaned and inspected Contact the local fire department for a referral or look for a local inspector online

Install battery operated carbon monoxide detec tors near sleeping areas CO poisoning is more common in the winter months when furnaces are turned on and portable generators are often used for electricity during power outages

Clean gutters to prevent ice dams from forming Roof ice dams can cause water to build up leading to interior damage

Clear storm drains along the curb to enable water to drain If plugged, water has the potential to go into low lying areas and flood basements

Have an emergency preparedness kit stored safely in the house that includes water, nonperishable food, a first aid kit, extra batteries, a battery or hand crank pow ered radio, emergency lighting or flashlights, extra blan kets and warm clothing

To prepare vehicles

Have the radiator system serviced, replace wind shield wipers and refill wiper fluid

Replace any worn tires and check air pressure reg ularly

Have the brakes, brake fluid, oil, car battery, heater and exhaust checked to make sure everything is running efficiently

Keep an emergency preparedness kit in the vehi cle stocked with batteries battery powered or hand crank radio, flashlight, windshield scraper, jumper cables, mobile phone charger, shovel, blankets, first aid kit, non perishable food and bottled water in case of becoming stranded or stuck

Death threats, tweets jolt GOP House infrastructure supporters

The last time Congress approved a major renewal of federal highway and other transportation programs the votes were 359 65 in the House and 83 16 in the Sen ate It was backed by nearly every Democrat and robust majorities of Republicans

This year s $1 trillion infrastructure bill easily cleared the Senate 69 13 with GOP support, but crawled through the House last week by 228 206 with just 13 Republican votes

Those defectors were sav aged afterward by former President Donald Trump hard right Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene, R Ga , called them “traitors” while tweet ing their names and office telephone numbers and one of the 13 says he received a death threat

The votes, six years apart and the harsh blow back against Republican mavericks illustrate a GOP in which conservative voic es have grown louder and more militant fanned by Trump s four years in office Growing numbers of progressives have made Democrats more liberal too with both shifts fueling a sharpening of partisanship in Washington “This madness has to stop ” said Rep Fred Upton R Mich an 18 term moder ate, who said his offices received dozens of threaten ing calls after his yes vote That included one obsceni ty laced rant that aides pro vided in which the caller repeatedly called Upton a “traitor” and expressed hope the lawmaker his family and aides would die Upton closed his two Michigan offices for a day and reopened them after increasing their security

This year s bill, triple the size of the 2015 measure, is a keystone of President Joe Biden’s push to create jobs and build out the nation s roads, water systems, broad band coverage and other projects A compromise between Senate Democrats and Republicans, it will send money into every state and is the kind of bill that politi cians have loved promoting back home for decades Biden plans to sign it Mon day

Democrats say GOP opposition to the bill is inde fensible on policy and politi cal grounds

“It’s a sad statement of how the other party has lost its way ” said Rep Sean Patrick Maloney, D N Y ,

who’s leading the House Democratic political arm into a 2022 campaign in which Republicans have solid chances of capturing con gressional control “If you want our country to fail so you can say things are bad and win power for yourself, you act like the House Republicans are ”

But for many Republi cans infrastructure projects once an issue the two parties would reflexively work together on for mutual and national benefit now offer a complex political calculation

“When it comes to policy these days we’re basically divided into two tribes And you stick with your tribe and you don t try to help the oth er tribe,” said Glen Bolger, a GOP pollster and strategist

As president Trump repeatedly promised his own massive infrastructure plan but never produced one, making the phrase “infra structure week a Washing ton synonym for pipe dream ” But he opposes the current package and his ability to rally his conserva tive supporters against those who cross him was a factor as GOP lawmakers decided how to vote

Even so hard right cries for retaliation against the 13 pro infrastructure Republi cans, largely moderates from the Northeast and Midwest have prompted their own pushback

“This notion that we’re going to have people that are on the fringe in terms of the Marjorie Taylor Greenes of the world and others, imposing some kind of a purity test on substance is lunacy ” said Rep Liz Cheney, R Wyo Cheney has been at war with Trump and the party’s far right ever since backing his impeach ment early this year

Cheney opposed the bill, saying it contained clean energy and other provisions that would hurt Wyoming She said the 13 Republicans who backed it are among some of our very best mem bers” who did it “because it was the right thing for their districts

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R Ky , an unabashed partisan war rior was among 19 Senate Republicans who voted for the bill in August McConnell, who doesn’t have to worry about being reelected until 2026 said this week he was delight ed” the measure was head ing to Biden

A day earlier McConnell had already drawn Trump s

wrath

Trump issued a statement denigrating GOP senators who d backed the bill for thinking that helping the Democrats is such a wonder ful thing to do ” Those Republicans “should be ashamed of themselves, in particular Mitch McConnell,” Trump wrote That was just the tip of the iceberg for the attacks

In an interview, the leader of the conservative House Freedom Caucus said GOP lawmakers should con sider removing from their posts the 10 of the 13 defec tors who are the senior Republican on committees and subcommittees “I respect their right to vote their districts and their con science But that doesn’t mean that they should get the privilege of leading House Republicans, said Rep Andy Biggs, R Ariz

At a private Florida din ner Monday to bolster House GOP campaign prospects Trump said he loves House Republicans but not the 13 who voted for the bill according to an attendee who described Trump s remarks on condition of anonymity

Earlier, House GOP lead ers tweeted and then delet ed that “Americans won t forget a vote for the “socialist” infrastructure bill “Time to name names and hold these fake republicans accountable tweeted Rep Lauren Boebert, R Colo

Before last week’s vote, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy R Calif said it would be very diffi cult for Republicans to pro mote backing the infrastruc ture bill during their cam paigns because it is so close ly linked to Democrats accompanying $1 85 trillion social and climate measure, which the GOP has solidly opposed

Rep Jeff Van Drew, R N J , who switched parties in 2019, said he supported the infrastructure bill because his state would receive more than $20 bil lion “we desperately need ” Van Drew who said he had heard “some cranky things” from some people, scoffed at the notion the bill would “catapult the president” politically

If Marjorie Taylor Greene wants to be mean to me, that’s fine,” he said of the colleague who labeled him and 12 others traitors I love America very much I would never ever do any thing to hurt this country ”

Appeals court temporarily delays release of Trump’s Jan. 6 records

WASHINGTON (AP)

A federal appeals court Thursday temporarily blocked the release of White House records sought by a U S House committee inves tigating the Jan 6 insurrec tion granting for now a request from former Presi dent Donald Trump

The administrative injunc tion issued by the U S Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit effectively bars until the end of this month the release of records that were to be turned over

Friday The appeals court set oral arguments in the case for Nov 30

The stay gives the court time to consider arguments in a momentous clash between the former presi dent, whose supporters stormed the Capitol on Jan 6, and President Joe Biden and Congress who have pushed for a thorough inves tigation of the riot It delays the House committee from reviewing records that law makers say could shed light on the events leading up to the insurrection and Trump’s efforts to delegit imize an election he lost

The National Archives which holds the documents says they include call logs, handwritten notes and a draft executive order on “election integrity ”

Biden waived executive privilege on the documents Trump then went to court arguing that as a former president he still had the right to exert privilege over the records and releasing them would damage the presidency in the future

U S District Judge Tanya Chutkan on Tuesday rejected those arguments, noting in part, “Presidents are not kings and plaintiff is

not president ” She again denied an emergency motion by Trump on Wednesday

In their emergency filing to the appeals court Trump’s lawyers wrote that without a stay, Trump would suffer irreparable harm through the effective denial of a constitu tional and statutory right to be fully heard on a serious disagreement between the former and incumbent presi dent ”

The Nov 30 arguments will take place before three judges nominated by Demo cratic presidents: Patricia Millett and Robert Wilkins

nominated by former Presi dent Barack Obama and Ketanji Brown Jackson, an appointee of Biden

Given the case’s magni tude whichever side loses before the circuit court is likely to eventually appeal to the U S Supreme Court

The White House on Thursday also notified a lawyer for Mark Meadows Trump s former chief of staff, that Biden would waive any executive privi lege that would prevent Meadows from cooperating with the committee, accord ing to a letter obtained by The Associated Press The

committee has subpoenaed Meadows and more than two dozen other people as part of its investigation

His lawyer, George Ter williger issued a statement in response saying Mead ows remains under the instructions of former Presi dent Trump to respect long standing principles of exec utive privilege It now appears the courts will have to resolve this con flict ” Terwilliger said

The committee late Thurs day threatened to begin con tempt proceedings against Meadows if he doesn’t change course and comply

In Brief Fucale posts shutout, helps blank Wings

DETROIT (AP)

Dmitry Orlov and Lars Eller scored 10 seconds apart in the first period as the Capitals ended Detroit’s three game win streak

The 26 year old Fucale was picked by Montreal in the second round of the 2013 draft He was 3 0 2 this season for Hershey before the Capitals called him up this week from the American Hockey League

Fucale was the first goal tender to shut out the Red Wings in his NHL debut in Detroit s 95 seasons

Alex Ovechkin had an assist on the first goal for the Capitals who opened a stretch of seven games in 11 days

Orlov’s second goal of the season came off a pass from Evgeny Kuznetsov at 12:43

Eller scored his first goal after a takeaway from Nick Jensen Thomas Greiss made 27 saves for the Red Wings, who killed four penalties but could not convert on their four power play chances (Continued on page 6B)
