L a s t y e a r w a s c h a l l e n g i n g f o r U . P . d e e r h u n t e r s ,

w i t h t h e o v e r a l l h a r v e s t down nearly 6% from 2019 a n d b u c k h a r v e s t d o w n nearly 11% Though harvest numbers are not to the lows experienced in 2014 2016, a f t e r t h e s e v e r e w i n t e r s i n 2013 2015, they are down f r o m h a r v e s t n u m b e r s i n 2017 and 2018.

Mast production this year seems very spotty. Look for a r e a s w i t h o a k s p r o d u c i n g a c o r n s , a s t h e y a r e s u r e t o attract deer.

Buck numbers seem to be improving, but there are still a r e a s w h e r e p e r s i s t e n c e i s going to be necessary to be successful Overall fawn pro duction seems to be good

A new universal antlerless l i c e n s e i s a v a i l a b l e f o r t h e first time this year in Michi gan. It will be an option for hunters in the southern part o f t h e U . P . w h e r e d e e r a r e essentially considered non m i g r a t o r y T h o u g h t h e s e areas can certainly still expe rience difficult winters, they also have lower hunter num bers than many locations in the Lower Peninsula.

Menominee County and p a r t s o f D i c k i n s o n C o u n t y c o n t i n u e t o h a v e a b u n d a n t deer numbers, according to t h e D N R . O t h e r l o c a t i o n s o p e n t o t h e a n t l e r l e s s l i c e n s e , s u c h a s D M U ’ s 0 2 2 , 1 2 1 , 1 2 2 , 1 5 5 , a n d 255, have smaller deer den s i t i e s t h a n D M U 0 5 5 b u t a l s o f e w e r d e e r h u n t e r s a s well. About 19,000 hunters h u n t t h o s e f i v e u n i t s c o m b i n e d , a c r o s s o v e r 2 , 0 0 0 s q u a r e m i l e s o f l a n d . T h a t

m e a n s t h a t o n a v e r a g e , those units only experience a b o u t n i n e h u n t e r s p e r square mile throughout the hunting season.

T h r o u g h o u t t h e m i d s n o w f a l l z o n e o f t h e U . P . , antlerless opportunities will exist for all archery hunters a n d s o m e f i r e a r m h u n t e r s , who had the opportunity to a p p l y f o r a M i d w e s t a n d M i d e a s t A c c e s s P e r m i t I f successfully drawn, hunters c a n u s e t h e i r u n i v e r s a l a n t l e r l e s s l i c e n s e i n t h e specified region.

T h i s i s a n e w c o n c e p t meant to maintain the flexi bility of the universal antler less license while still limit ing participation in sensitive areas

The DNR acknowledges that some hunters will view a n y a n t l e r l e s s h a r v e s t i n t h e s e a r e a s a s p o t e n t i a l l y damaging, given their current l e v e l o f c o n c e r n f o r d e e r

populations With quotas set a t 1 , 0 0 0 i n e a c h u n i t , a n d a v e r a g e s u c c e s s r a t e s f o r U P hunters being 36%, the D N R a n t i c i p a t e s n o m o r e t h a n 3 5 0 t o 3 6 0 a n t l e r l e s s deer being taken in each unit.

W i t h n e a r l y 3 , 0 0 0 square miles in the west and 3 , 7 0 0 s q u a r e m i l e s i n t h e east, this roughly translates t o o n e a n t l e r l e s s d e e r f o r every 10 square miles

M i c h i g a n a l s o i s t e s t i n g an online harvest reporting system this year The DNR i s e n c o u r a g i n g s u c c e s s f u l hunters to record the infor mation about the harvest of their deer and provide feed b a c k T h e o n l i n e r e p o r t i n g will expedite the information a v a i l a b l e a n d a l l o w D N R s t a f f t o g i v e n e a r r e a l t i m e reports on how the season is progressing.

The 2019 20 winter was s e v e r e i n a r e a s a n d s t a r t e d d u r i n g t h e g u n s e a s o n f o r most of the north. This meant the 2019 20 winter not only impacted deer, it also affect e d h u n t e r s a n d t h e o v e r a l l 2019 gun season harvest

Comparatively, the 2020 gun season had more favor a b l e w e a t h e r , w h i c h c o n tributed to an increased har vest. A majority of the north ern deer management units e x p e r i e n c e d a n i n c r e a s e i n buck harvest last year.

I t w i l l b e i m p o r t a n t f o r hunters to get out and scout T h e a r e a s o f t h e s e v e r e w i n d s t o r m s o f 2 0 1 9 c a n s t i l l h a v e h a z a r d t r e e s t h a t c a n b e a d a n g e r e v e n y e a r s a f t e r t h e s t o r m , R o l l m a n said

T h e s e a r e a s w i l l a l s o have altered deer movement d u e t o t h e l a r g e a r e a s o f open tree canopy leading to thicker regrowth The thick areas may be difficult to see through but can provide an excellent place to set stands around to catch deer moving t o a n d f r o m t h e t h i c k b e d ding cover.

This same idea applies to any area of new timber har v e s t s f o u n d c o m m o n l y a c r o s s W i s c o n s i n I t i s i m p o r t a n t t o c o n t i n u e t o adapt to deer movements as t h e h a b i t a t c h a n g e s , R o l l man said

Another variable habitat f e a t u r e i s t h e a c o r n c r o p , w h i c h i s a l w a y s i m p o r t a n t t o c o n s i d e r w h e n h u n t i n g t h e f o r e s t e d a r e a s o f t h e north.

the three to five year cycle

t h a t m o s t o f t h e r e g i o n e x p e r i e n c e s . T h i s y e a r i s expected to be another spot ty year of production, which a g a i n l e n d s i t s e l f t o t h e importance of scouting.

“ N o t a l l o a k s t a n d s w i l l be equal, as deer will leave low producing areas to find a r e a s t h a t h a v e a b e t t e r acorn crop,” Rollman said.

Firearm season is a busy period for Michigan COs

A s a m p l i n g o f f i e l d r e p o r t s f r o m M i c h i g a n D e p a r t m e n t o f N a t u r a l Resources conservation offi c e r s d u r i n g t h e 2 0 2 0 f i r e a r m d e e r s e a s o n i n t h e Upper Peninsula:

C o n s e r v a t i o n O f f i c e r E t h e n M a p e s r e s p o n d e d t o a n O R V t r e s p a s s i n g c o m plaint near Bruce Crossing

U p o n i n v e s t i g a t i n g O R V t r a c k s o n t o t h e c o m p l a i n a n t ’ s p r o p e r t y , a g u t pile was found. CO Mapes followed the ORV tracks to t h e n e i g h b o r ’ s p r o p e r t y w h e r e a l a r g e b a i t p i l e w a s f o u n d a s w e l l a s a n u n t a g g e d d e e r T h e o w n e r of the deer admitted that he d i d n o t w a n t t o s p e n d t h e m o n e y o n a n o u t o f s t a t e deer license. Citations were written for over limit of bait a s w e l l a s p o s s e s s i o n o f a n untagged deer

C O S h a n n o n K r i t z received a Report all Poach ing complaint about a prop erty owner who was block ing access to state land with f e n c e p o s t s a n d f a k e D e p a r t m e n t o f N a t u r a l R e s o u r c e s s i g n a g e . T h e roadblock was removed but o n t h e s e c o n d d a y o f g u n s e a s o n , C O K r i t z w a s patrolling the area when two h u n t e r s t o l d h e r t h a t t h e roadway was blocked again T h i s t i m e , t h e s u s p e c t h a d cut down multiple trees and u s e d a t r a c t o r t o b l o c k o f f the roadway. CO Kritz was able to follow the tractor tire p r i n t s b a c k t o a c a m p C O K r i t z i n t e r v i e w e d t h e landowners and one person c o n f e s s e d t o b l o c k i n g o f f t h e a c c e s s r o a d t o t h e s t a t e l a n d , s o t h e i r h u n t w a s n o t i n t e r r u p t e d , s i n c e h i s s o n w a s c o m i n g u p t o h u n t o n o p e n i n g d a y C O K r i t z issued a citation to the indi v i d u a l f o r c u t t i n g t r e e s o n

C O S h a n n o n K r i t z r e s p o n d e d t o a r e p o r t o f a l o s t h u n t e r w i t h t h e Menominee County Sher iff’s Department. The hunter s u f f e r e d f r o m a m e d i c a l condition which caused him to become disoriented in the w o o d s T h e h u n t e r w a s q u i c k l y l o c a t e d a l o n g a r o a d w a y b y t h e f i r s t responding deputy and was t r a n s p o r t e d t o t h e h o s p i t a l for treatment

b y t h e H a n n a h v i l l e P o l i c e Department.

E a r l i e r i n t h e f a l l , C O Jared Ferguson found ORV tracks going around a DNR Grouse Enhanced Manage m e n t S i t e g a t e i n n o r t h e r n D i c k i n s o n C o u n t y C O Ferguson recruited the help o f C p l B r e t t D e L o n g e t o help him with the complaint. While waiting for the ORVs t o c o m e o u t , C O D e L o n g e stopped another ORV in the a r e a f o r n o O R V r e g i s t r a tion. DeLonge, while talking with the operator, was able to find out his hunting part n e r w a s b e h i n d t h e G E M S g a t e w i t h a h a r v e s t e d 8 p o i n t d e e r . C O F e r g u s o n and Cpl DeLonge were able t o l o c a t e t h e h u n t e r , w h o a l s o h a d a n u n r e g i s t e r e d ORV. Citations were issued f o r u n r e g i s t e r e d O R V a n d o p e r a t e O R V i n a c l o s e d area on state land.

C O J a r e d F e r g u s o n w a s p a t r o l l i n g a c o u n t y r o a d i n northern Iron County when

h e o b s e r v e d a s i d e b y s i d e o p e r a t o r c o m i n g a t h i m without his seatbelt on CO Ferguson made a traffic stop o n t h e O R V a n d f o u n d t h e individual in possession of a loaded rifle in the front seat T h e h u n t e r s t a t e d h e w a s h u n t i n g o n h i s w a y b a c k t o c a m p a n d w h e n C O F e r g u s o n a s k e d f o r h i s d e e r l i c e n s e , h e s t a t e d h e l e f t them at home. He was cited f o r a l o a d e d f i r e a r m i n a motor vehicle and no license in possession. While filling out the citation, CO Fergu son observed a set of lights coming at him which turned out to be the man’s hunting p a r t n e r , w h o a l s o h a d a l o a d e d f i r e a r m o n a m o t o r v e h i c l e , n o h e l m e t a n d a n u n r e g i s t e r e d O R V H e w a s cited for loaded firearm and given warnings for the ORV infractions.

COs Josh Boudreaux and J o h n K a m p s w r a p p e d u p a m u l t i w e e k i n v e s t i g a t i o n regarding an individual who had been sabotaging another person’s tree stand on public land, which stemmed from a dispute over a hunting area The suspect was cutting the s t r a p s i n s u c h a w a y t h a t when the individual went to s t e p o n t o t h e h a n g o n s t a n d ’ s p l a t f o r m i t w o u l d give way, potentially caus i n g t h e m t o f a l l 1 5 t o 2 0 feet Fortunately, the victim was able to prevent himself

from falling and quickly left the area where he then con tacted the local COs Cam e r a s w e r e p l a c e d w a t c h i n g t h e s t a n d o n c e i t w a s r e s e t an d p ictu r es w er e cap tu r ed o f t h e s u s p e c t o n c e a g a i n c u t t i n g t h e s t r a p s A f t e r m u l t i p l e s e a r c h w a r r a n t s w e r e e x e c u t e d w i t h a s s i s tance of the DNR’s Special Investigations Unit, an inter v i e w w a s c o n d u c t e d , a n d the COs received a full con f e s s i o n f r o m t h e s u s p e c t C h a r g e s a r e b e i n g s o u g h t t h r o u g h t h e M a r q u e t t e County Prosecutor’s Office for multiple misdemeanors i n c l u d i n g h u n t e r h a r a s s ment, malicious destruction o f p r o p e r t y , a n d f e l o n y counts of assault with intent t o c a u s e g r e a t b o d i l y h a r m less than murder

U p o n c o n t a c t , t h e i n d i v i d u a l , w h o w a s d r e s s e d f r o m h e a d t o t o e i n c a m o u f l a g e , s t e p p e d o u t a n d i n f o r m e d the COs that he wasn’t hunt i n g , h e w a s j u s t o u t w a t c h i n g f o r t h i s , “ m a s s i v e 1 0 p o i n t b u c k ” s o t h a t h i s brother, who wasn’t current l y o u t h u n t i n g , c o u l d s h o o t it. The individual claimed he d i d n ’ t h a v e a n y w e a p o n s with him until CO Boudreaux a s k e d t o c h e c k h i s b l i n d The man finally admitted he had a firearm but thought he w a s O K t o h u n t b e c a u s e a f r i e n d t o l d h i m h e w a s a non violent felon The indi vidual’s firearm was seized, a n d a r e p o r t w a s g e n e r a t e d f o r s u b m i s s i o n t o t h e M a r quette County Prosecutor’s Office

CO Cole VanOosten was o n p a t r o l i n S c h o o l c r a f t County when he observed a t r u c k s l o w l y d r i v i n g t o w a r d s h i m . C o n t a c t w a s made and it was determined t h a t t h e d r i v e r w a s t r a n s porting an uncased shotgun, had already harvested a deer t h e d a y b e f o r e , a n d d i d n o t h a v e a n u n u s e d d e e r t a g . T w o o f t h e d e e r w e r e i m p r o p e r l y t a g g e d w i t h a combination license and one of the deer, a 4 point, did not m e e t t h e r e q u i r e m e n t s f o r e i t h e r o f t h e c o m b i n a t i o n tags held by the hunter The deer was seized, and a report was generated for review by the Mackinac County prose cutor

CO Cole VanOosten was patrolling Mackinac Coun ty when he observed a traffic violation A traffic stop was conducted and upon contact i t w a s d e t e r m i n e d t h a t t h e d r i v e r w a s t r a n s p o r t i n g a recently killed deer that was a s p i k e h o r n T h e d r i v e r admitted to killing the deer a n d i t w a s d e t e r m i n e d t h a t t h e d e e r w a s t a g g e d w i t h a c o m b i n a t i o n l i c e n s e m e a n t f o r d e e r w i t h a t l e a s t 3 points on one side The deer was seized and a ticket was issued for possessing a deer without a valid license.

Upon contact with a s u b j e c t , i t w a s d e t e r m i n e d that there was a large amount o f b a i t a t t h e s i t e a s w e l l a s a n a r t i f i c i a l l i g h t p l a c e d a b o v e t h e b a i t . T h e C O s observed drag marks exiting t h e w o o d s a s w e l l a s s o m e blood on a nearby all terrain v e h i c l e . A n u n t a g g e d d o e was discovered hanging in a tree and the subject stated the deer had been shot the night b e f o r e w i t h a r i f l e I t w a s determined that the deer had been shot over an hour after s h o o t i n g h o u r s a n d t h e hunter had used the light at the bait pile to aid in shooting the deer with a rifle. Another deer carcass was located in a n e a r b y g a r b a g e p i l e . T h e

individual stated that he had shot the deer during bow sea s o n w i t h a r i f l e a n d h e d i d not have a license to take the deer The subject had not had a hunting license for over six years Interviews were con ducted and it was determined that there had been four deer illegally taken from the site in the last year. Property was seized and a report was sub m i t t e d t o t h e L u c e C o u n t y P r o s e c u t o r s O f f i c e f o r review

CO Andrea Dani was on p a t r o l i n A l g e r C o u n t y when she observed a pickup truck parked at the entrance to a path that CO Dani knew l e d t o a n i l l e g a l p e r m a n e n t b l i n d w i t h n o i d e n t i f y i n g information on Commercial F o r e s t L a n d C O D a n i h a d been to the blind previously,

w h e r e s h e n o t e d d o z e n s o f t r e e s c u t a p p r o x i m a t e l y 1 foot off the ground to create shooting lanes. CO Dani then r e c o g n i z e d t h e p i c k u p a s b e l o n g i n g t o a s u b j e c t s h e m e t e a r l i e r t h a t y e a r w h e n C O M a r k Z i t n i k c i t e d h i m for baiting deer too early at two different locations near b y . C O D a n i c o n t a c t e d t h e hunter in the blind, who was n o t w e a r i n g p r o p e r h u n t e r o r a n g e C O D a n i a s k e d t o c h e c k t h e h u n t e r ’ s l i c e n s e and the hunter stated he had just texted his son to tell him he forgot his wallet at camp.

I n t o t a l , A n t h o n y worked on five illustrations: wild turkey, red fox, hooded m e r g a n s e r , b l a c k b e a r a n d elk.

Over the years, the DNR h a s f o u n d t h a t e v e n c l e a r regulations will still gener a t e c a l l s f o r c l a r i f i c a t i o n because people are unsure if they meet the criteria for the h u n t e r d e s c r i b e d i n t h e digest scenario.
