PILAR DE LA HORADADA Pilar de la Horadada is a village on the south east coast of Spain with around 22,000 inhabitants. The climate is typically Mediterranean with average annual temperaturas of 18degrees Celsius, gentle breezes and more than 3.200 hours of sunshine a year. In the village we can find: four Public Schools of Primary Education , small shops , kindergartens, a health center, a Public Secondary School, a Music School and numerous gardens and parks. In Pilar de la Horadada we can find several resources such as: an indoor sports arena and an indoor public swimming pool or the Municipal Library. Today, almost half of the population is immigrant, coming from

different

countries,

highlighting

the

dominance of British citizens, Eastern Europe , South American and Morocco .


HISTORY The town has been the site of many

battles

because

of

its

location at the historical frontier between the Kingdom of Murcia (Castilla) and the Kingdom of Valencia. The romans named it Thiar, an enclave on the Via Augusta between the towns of Ilici and Cartago Nova. This road and other buildings were built in the first and second centuries BC, by using the rocks that might be extracted

from

the

quarries

located

Roman on

the

beach El RĂ­o. Throughout history, these lands suffered numerous pirate attacks. The pirates disembarked on the coast and raided and plundered the

inland

areas.

The

watchtowers were built precisely for warning of the approach of their boats, communicating with people using bonfires. Ana 6ÂşA


CHURCH SQUARE The Church of "Nuestra Señora del Pilar" is in the centre of the town. It was built in 1986 on the same site as its predecessor. The bell tower of the original structure stands to this day. In the building there are lots of examples of religious art, especially works from the local artists José María Sánchez Lozano and Manuel Ribera Girona. In that square you can find lots of café’s and it is always full of people and children playing.

TOWN HALL SQUARE The Town Hall is very big. The mayor governs the village and he works very hard.

There is a lot of people that work in the Town Hall Square. Everybody has

a

computer.The Town Hall has hree floors. All activities around our townare organized by the Town Hall.

The Town Hall also has a modern clock on the top of the Town Hall. The Town Hall has also a balcony in the 1st floor.

OUR SCHOOL, SPORTS MEDITERRÁNEO SCHOOL Mediterráneo School is a very new school. It was built in _______. This year it has 639 students, 215 in Pre -Primary stage, and 424

in

Primary

Education.

The

average ratio per class is 25 students. The Centre has 47 teachers as well as a psychologist and two special educators. Our school is a very Sofía 6ºA SPORTS CENTER Pilar de la Horadada has a sports center that offer a wide range of sport activities for all ages. Here you will find more than 39 sports, including traditional sports like soccer, tennis, swimming and basketball and others like climbing and martial arts among many others. CENTER AND “RAMBLAS” “LAS RAMBLAS” “Las Ramblas” are a boulevard from Pilar de la Horadada to the beach. When it rains a lot, they bring the water back to the beach, but generally people go there to walk, do sport or ride a bike. In some parts of the boulevard you can find basketball baskets whre children play basketball. There is also a bridge called “el puente del beso”, that is the kiss’ bridge During the local holidays, on October 12th, it is the place where you can see wonderful fireworks. Almudena 6ºA

BEACHES The beaches of Pilar de la Horadada are spread along five kilometres. They are long with fine and white sand; These beaches are relatively safe places and swimming is permitted in mild conditions. Under the sea, one can see the marine biodiversity and the poseidonia. The quality of these beaches is demonstrated with their Blue Flags. EL MOJON BEACH It is the southernmost beach of the municipality, bordering with the Region of Murcia. It is frequented by fishermen LAS HIGUERICAS BEACH it is one of the most visited beaches in summer since it is accessible to disabled people, it has a large car park LAS VILLAS BEACH Many children love to come to this beach with their beach bucket and play to be crab fishers in the rocky area. It is a beach of fine white sand and clear waters PORT BEACH Beach accessible by a ramp located on the harbour, where the Yacht Club organizes sailing courses and regattas in the summer.


BEACHES EL CONDE BEACH Few places are so magical to see at the sunrise like this beach. The awakening of the watchtower that presides this beach is an awesome spectacle. LOS JESUITAS BEACH Between the beach and the first of the Rocamar coves is the Puntal del Gato, a lilttle cape from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of the coast of Pilar de la Horadada. ROCAMAR BEACH This beach is a succession of small coves which attract people in search of inspiration, peace and relax. EL RIO BEACH This beach receives its name because the RĂ­o Seco flowing into which serves as a guide for hikers who want to climb up to the natural area of Pinar de Campoverde on foot. Here you can see the Roman quarries, which was used by the Romans to extract stone and to make several buildings. VISTAMAR BEACH It is the beach which is situated further north of the city, and it is connected with the beach of Mil Palmeras and Rio Carolina 6ÂşA


PINE FOREST On the inland area of Pilar de la Horadada, there are some attractive excursions to be made near the town such as “Río Seco” route. This is an ancient river, dried nowadays, considered a natural reserve, where you can find important endangered animals and fossils, including sirenio´s ones. There are two signposted routes along the Río Seco riverbed that are worth the visit. One of them is 4 kilometres long and the other 10 kilometres. In these walking tours we can see the effects of water erosion on walls of yellowish sandstone. The botanical species associated with these watercourses are the reed, rattan and the tamarisk, surrounded by a large pine forest.

GASTRONOMY The gastronomy of Pilar de la Horadada occupies an important place within the culture of this town. Typical dishes to highlight are the potato stew with meat, the meatballs stew, the rabbit in garlic "caba単il" and the "gachas migas". Moreover, there is a good variety of forms of cooking rice: you can find different sorts of "paella" and the popular "caldero" made of rice and fish. The agriculture of the area offers fresh vegetables, freshly harvested everyday, and the sea does the same with the seafood: gilt-head breams, groupers and European sea basses are the most common varieties of fish. And if we move on to the desserts and pastries, in Pilar de la Horadada excellent bakery recipes are found, where "milhojas" and "cordiales" are the most important.
