MY LIFE AS A ‘NEW One of the state’s, if not the nation’s most prolific writers, Nick Earls has created a tale of a kid who is finding life difficult in a whole new country. For the Toowong-based writer of over 30 books, it is a story not too far from his own life, when he arrived as nine year old from Ireland back in 1972. His new book, aimed at the upper primary school readers is ‘New Boy’, the story of a kid just trying to fit in, and has issues involved that kids can relate to, as the story of a boy from South Africa moving to Australia has many similarities. New Boy is the story of Herschelle who leaves behind everything he knows in South Africa. Adjusting to a new country and a new school was never going to be easy for Herschelle. The food is strange, it’s so different to South Africa and, worst of all, no one understands the Aussie slang he’s learnt on the web. But it’s the similarities that make things really hard. Herschelle will have to confront racism, bullying and his own past before Australia can feel like home. “There are certainly some aspects that are autobiographical,” Nick said from his home in Toowong. “What happened to

me, coming out from Ireland when I did, going to Ascot State School… I looked like a lot of the other kids, and even though we had the same language, many kids didn’t understand what I was saying. “Northern Ireland in 1972 was a lot different to what it is now, there were a lot of adjustments to be made. I wanted to write about a character like that, and bring it in to the present.

many migrants come from, and I wanted it to be more different from New Zealand or the UK. Both my brothers in law are married to South Africans, and I have an idea of what they went through,” Nick said. “For instance the fact they turned up here referring to ‘robots’…what we call traffic lights, and how security issues are so different there. We lock our doors and walk away when we park our cars at the shopping

There are certainly some aspects that are autobiographical... “So I thought where could I get someone who’s background is European, speaks English and simply drop them into a story? This is really an up to date version of what I went through. “I chose South Africa because I was thinking where am I going to get an English speaking migrant that would feel very different in Australia? It’s a place where

centre, but in Capetown you pay someone to mind your car. These are the kinds of adjustments I was looking for. So it was a plausible place for this character to come from. By picking there I had a sort of head start.” Nick has written or been involved in over thirty books, and has spent his whole life in South East Queensland since moving out

from Northern Ireland as a nine year old. It is fair to say he is perfectly positioned to relate to a character who is adjusting to a new life, as he knew what that felt like. “I can remember sitting in the classroom struggling to keep up when people spoke. Then I would speak and nobody understood me. I’d use words and they’d laugh, so it was kind of tough. “Another time I was in a playground and a kid came up to me and said ‘You’re that foreign kid aren’t you? Say something!’ “In broader life there were things that were very different. The Northern Irish situation made things very different. When we first went to a supermarket in Brisbane we walked in and lifted our arms up to be searched. Of course, nothing happened. We couldn’t believe it…anyone could walk in here with a bomb…and that’s when we realised we’d made the right choice to come here.” New Boy tackles acceptance, friendship and bullying. Nick hopes that kids will take something from this book. “There is a great level of engagement with

BOY’ books at the moment for kids, and that’s a good thing. Books should be there to do a range of things, and books that entertain still get the reader coming back, but some books need to be about something. “What I wanted to do with New Boy was write a story that would work…stand on its own two feet, but underneath the surface has elements that gets kids thinking about bullying in schools. They put a lot of work into bullying these days, but many things happen in the playground unseen, and I wanted that element of the story to make kids think. “Here’s a kid who stands out at his last school. He was a success, but here he is in a totally different environment. If there is a 9 or 10 year old going through that experience, just like I did when I was a kid coming to Australia, I want them to pick up this book and know that there are others who have been through that. Similarly there may be kids who read this and next time a kid arrives in their classroom from another country, they might go out of their way to help them.”

TAKING THAT WINNING SHOT The Enviroplan Photography Competition is on again! Each issue until closing date Ipswich Life will feature some of the best pics from last year and find out the story behind the photo. This issue we speak with Ipswich Girls Grammar student Ella McBain from Mutdapilly who was the overall Primary winner in 2013 with her picture ‘Winter Sunrise’ “I first heard about the competition when we got a flyer in the mail, and mum mentioned it to me. I’d always dabbled in photography and thought it would be a good way to see if they were any good! “I put a heap of photos in for the contest, including some some kangaroo shots as we get them often on our property. I sometimes spend ages* waiting for the right moment, as when you get close they tend to want to get away from you as quick as possible. “With the ‘Winter Sunrise’ photo we have a view of Flinders Peak to the East from home. I use a digital SLR, and one day there was this amazing sunrise, so I just walked out into the backyard. It’s always beautiful in winter. When you get the fog, the landscape and the sun all together it’s just a great view. “So I grabbed a camera and took heaps of shots. It was tricky trying to capture the moment. I had to take about fifteen, or twenty photos, and it was a bit cool…it was right in the middle of winter, and about six in the morning. “It was a massive shock to hear that I’d made the finals, I didn’t think they were good enough. My friends all thought it was really cool, and it inspired me to go on. It really

ignited my passion for photography and now I take photos all the time. I take heaps of my horses, sunrises, sunsets, and lots of nature photos. “It’s something I’d like to continue doing, maybe as a career. I’m going to enter again this year. I’m concentrating on everything, from plants and landscapes to people and animals…I plan to enter every category! It’s so much fun.” Ella’s advice to anyone thinking about entering Enviroplan? “Get out there. Find a good place to take a photo…honestly, it doesn’t matter what camera you have. If you find the right location, you can’t go wrong.” *In marsupial circles Ella is known as ‘The Roo Stalker’

Kerbside clean-up is back! Ipswich homeowners will be given the chance to have large waste items collected by Ipswich City Council through the kerbside collection set to take place from this month. The collection service begins this week and rotates through all Ipswich suburbs over a 10 week period. Acceptable items for collection include anything that is too big to fit into a wheelie bin. However, collection is limited to two cubic metres in volume (equal to the size of one small box trailer) for each residence. Examples include furniture and white goods not able to be re-sold by an existing collection service. Unsuitable items for collection include batteries, excessive waste loads, fire extinguishers, food waste, gas cylinders, glass of any description, hazardous waste, liquids, car parts, tyres, fibro-type material (as it may contain asbestos), building materials such as bricks and concrete and green waste such as tree branches and grass clippings. Ipswich suburbs would be visited to give all residents the chance to take part in this free collection service offered by council.

Keep an eye on your mailbox for a flyer advising when the service was scheduled to commence in your area. Notification of the commencement date for their suburb will be sent as a flyer in an envelope to each resident a week before the service commences in their area. This will give everyone plenty of time to have a look around their home and place any items that fit the collection criteria on the footpath. It is important that residents do not place goods for the service on the footpath outside their home before their suburb is scheduled for pick-up. Residents who place items out for collection weeks or months in advance of their scheduled date will be asked to remove the items to within their property. Items will only be removed from footpaths once during the suburb schedule. Additional items found to be placed on footpaths after the initial collection will not be collected. Residents placing items on their footpath after a collection has already occurred will need to make alternative arrangements to have the items

GOT THE SKILLS?

GET RECOGNISED WITH TAFE QUEENSLAND SOUTH WEST! What could you do if your industry skills and experience were acknowledged? What if you could minimise, or even eliminate, the need to do formal study? Have you considered applying for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)? In many cases RPL is cheaper than undertaking a whole qualification and can save you up to 40% of the course cost. Fasttracking a formal qualification can also help you retain your current job, secure a new job, promotion or pay rise, gain entry to or credit points towards university studies and even provide possible tax benefits. TAFE Queensland South West RPL Coordinator Meegan Whimp is encouraging people who have worked or volunteered in their industry within the last five years and want to gain recognition for their skills to apply. “A lot of our RPL applicants are concerned about collecting evidence, we endeavour to make this process as simple as possible.

RPL evidence can be as simple as having a conversation with an RPL assessor, asking your supervisor to sign a document confirming your workplace activities or even showing us pictures of your work,” says Ms Whimp. “We assist RPL applicants in a timely and professional manner. So far in 2015, 22% of our applicants were able to complete their chosen qualification in four weeks or less through the RPL process.” “There are no costs involved in asking about RPL, so why not ask the question that could save you a lot of money and time.” To enquire about or apply for RPL please call 1300 914 754 or visit www.tafesouthwest.edu.au

Not sure what’s involved in the RPL process? A typical journey includes the following: 1

Contact TAFE Queensland South West, an RPL Information Kit will be issued via email and a pre-enrolment interview is scheduled within 48 hours

2

Pre enrolment interview – an RPL Assessor will contact you to devise an individual training plan

3

Enrolment – you will be required to enrol into RPL units and training units

4

Evidence of knowledge – you can now commence submitting evidence to support your RPL application

5

Training – training may be required to complete your chosen qualification

6

Upon successful completion/ submission of your training and RPL evidence you will be issued a nationally recognised qualification

TIP: when completing an RPL application, treat it like a job application.

MEET SHELLEY Shelley O’Grady is obtaining her Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care through RPL at TAFE in Bundamba. She has worked at Amberley OSHC for 11 years and has previously completed a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. Shelley took on the Diploma and RPL process to enrich her passion for teaching and caring for children, which stems from her own children and work experience including previous positions teaching children self-defence and how to swim. “I am finding the RPL process very

interesting; I feel comfortable collecting the evidence required and I find during the professional conversations I elaborate on my answers because my job is my passion,” Shelley said about her RPL journey. As for Shelley’s advice to others considering applying for RPL, she offered; “It’s not as scary as you might think, just relax and learn more from it. Always go into it with a positive attitude.” “Be confident, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.” Pictured above: Shelley O’Grady

IN BRIEF Green waste bins for renters Ipswich residents who rent properties are able to obtain a green waste bin from Ipswich City Council. City Management and Finance Committee Chairperson Councillor Victor Attwood said the green waste service was available to residential properties via a waste management utility charge on the quarterly rates notice issued to the property owner. Cr Attwood said for rated services, property owners/managing agents must commit to the service for a minimum of 12 months from the service’s commencement. “After this time, the service can be cancelled at any time.” Cr Attwood said council also allowed tenants of rental properties to access the green waste bin service via an annual or six monthly invoice. “The annual charge for a 240 litre green waste service for rental properties will be $70 per year from July 1, which is the same annual charge as the rated service. “Tenants can contact council to arrange payment for the service. “For units or townhouses with a building manager or body corporate, the building manager or body corporate will need to complete the online form at www. ipswich.qld.gov.au or contact council.” The service is offered on a fortnightly basis using 240-litre mobile green bins. Service days are the same day as a resident’s normal refuse collection service and on the alternate week to the recycling service. The service will accept shrubs, weeds, prunings and grass clippings, low-grade paper waste, leaves and loose bark, raw and cooked fruit and vegetable scraps, egg shells, bread, tea bags and coffee beans. Materials must be placed loose in the bin and not in plastic bags or boxes.

Pedestrian improvements A number of projects will be undertaken by Ipswich City Council during the next year to improve pedestrian safety. Councillor Cheryl Bromage said the projects would largely be carried out in Ipswich’s Central Business District. “We will be carrying out works to improve pedestrian connectivity between the CBD and Queens Park. “These works will include installation of new kerb ramps at the intersection of Milford St, Garden St and Griffith Rd, and a new concrete footpath along Goleby Ave.” Cr Bromage said at the intersection of Warwick and Salisbury roads, a missing section of footpath and a new kerb ramp would be installed to improve the link to the University of Southern Queensland’s Ipswich campus and Bremer State High School. 4 Ipswich Life

BRIDGE TURNS FIFTY Fifty years to the day the David Trumpy bridge was opened, the Governor of Queensland joined in a celebration for what is probably the most important section of road in Ipswich. The bridge was officially opened on June 26, 1965 (pictured below right) by then Queensland Administrator Sir Alan Mansfield before a crowd of more than 1000 people. At the 50th Anniversary event were relatives of the bridge’s namesake the late long-serving Ipswich Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr David Trumpy as well as other invited guests. Currently the bridge carries approximately 33,000 vehicles a day as the key piece of the city’s transport and road network, especially with its proximity to Riverlink Shopping Centre and the Ipswich CBD. Cr Pisasale said the bridge was a significant part of the day-to-day lives of many Ipswich residents. “The bridge was named after Dr Trumpy in recognition of the 47 years he spent as Ipswich Hospital’s Superintendent from 1920 to his retirement in 1967,” said Mayor Pisasale. “The Ipswich community of the time was extremely fortunate to have someone as dedicated as Dr Trumpy at the helm of their local hospital.” Dr Trumpy was the foundation member

the significant role played in the Ipswich community by Dr Trumpy.” The bridge comprises six spans ranging from 110 to 165 feet (33.5 m to 50.2 m) and included the longest single welded steel girder span in Australia, and during construction it was known as the ‘High Red Wharf’ (pictured left). Original plans for the bridge have been found in the possession of The Ipswich Historical Society and they are on display at Ipswich Central Library for the community to see. of the Ipswich and West Moreton Medical Association formed in 1926 and in 1928 was elected a member of the Council of the Queensland branch of the British Medical Association. He was awarded the Medal of the British Empire (MBE) for his dedication to the medical profession in 1960. “He died in 1971 at age 79, in the Ipswich General Hospital after a long illness but a week before his death was made a lifetime member of the Australian Medical Association. It is wonderful that we were joined by Dr Robert Lawrence who is Dr Trumpy’s great nephew and his father Ian Lawrence. “We welcome them to Ipswich to recognise

The Kitsch Team at Ipswich City Square have been inspired to add a whole new component to the already packed line up, with the introduction of Brighton Beach ’53. For just one day, a beach complete with wading pools and sand will pop up in Ipswich City Square, to magically transport visitors to the gorgeously colourful seaside settings of the 1950s. Think colourful beach huts, canvas deck chairs, bright stripy umbrellas, seaside donkey rides and even a traditional Punch and Judy puppet show. Families will be able to picnic on Brighton Beach, relax on the deck chairs and watch the world go by, while the kids build sandcastles or play in the water. Brighton Beach ’53 will complement the traditional Kitsch offer of Pinup Parades, the Prom King and Queen Pageant, Bombshell Makeovers and Style Sessions with the divine Miss Chrissy from the Lindy Charm School for Girls, swing dancing with Swing a Billy Ray, live music on the rotunda, and of course, the fabulous vintage and retro fashion and collectables markets. And if the addition of Brighton Beach ’53 is not exciting enough, in 2015, Kitsch in the Swich is partnering with Cool Cruises Car Club, who will bring around 250 Fords, Holdens, classic cars and American muscle cars to the Ipswich CBD. Get ready for Ipswich to come alive with the sounds of Rockabilly tunes and swing-tastic music, accompanied by the throaty purr of a couple of hundred engines.

BUDGET TO ADDRESS IPSWICH HISTORY POPULATION GROWTH SNIPPETS The Ipswich City Council has handed down the budget for 2015-2016 which will prepare the city for the expected growth which will see the population grow from 190,000 to 435,000 by the year 2031. As usual with budgets, it means a price increase for ratepayers, and at the launch of the budget last week it was revealed as a 2.49% increase which means an extra 76 cents a week on residential owner-occupier homes. In handing down the $396 million budget, some of the spending for local residents includes: • $46 MILLION for new roads, road maintenance, improvements and drainage • $11 MILLION for a four-lane upgrade of Redbank Plains Road between Keidges and Cedar Roads • $5.6 MILLION for waste management collection and recycling • $1.3 MILLION for Safe City improvements • $3.2 MILLION for black spot improvements in Raceview, East Ipswich and Karrabin • $2.7 MILLION to complete Robelle Domain Lagoon in Springfield IN OTHER NEWS: The upgrade to Redbank Plains Road will be a big relief for anyone who has used the road in the last few years, especially at night. A significant arterial road in Ipswich, the construction will be staged to minimise impacts to traffic. Preliminary works are already underway on the project, with completion expected by March next year. With regards to population, expect Ipswich to welcome resident number 200,000 within the next two years, and this number is expected to top 435,000 within 16 years. As a result, there have been growth spurts in Redbank Plains, Brookwater, Springfield Lakes, Collingwood Park, Ripley and a major subdivision in Walloon. Mayor Pisasale stressed that Ipswich needs to be ready for this influx

of people, and with the average age in Ipswich now just 32 (down from 36), it means the population of Ipswich is younger than ever. There will be a Kerbside Cleanup program, which will begin this week and on rotation through all Ipswich suburbs over a 10 week period. Collection will be limited to two cubic metres, so keep an eye on your letterbox for information on when your suburb is next. Blackspots to receive funding include new traffic lights on the corner of Edwards Street, Raceview Street and Ripley Road in Flinders View, along with traffic lights at the intersection of Briggs and Cemetary Road in Raceview. There will also be works at another blackspot on Jacaranda Street in East Ipswich. Bundamba Pool will be in for a nicer Winter in 2016 with heating equipment to be installed to the popular facility. The centre was built in 1972 and only the 25 metre pool is heated. With the 50 metre pool also soon to be heated, it is expected to increase visitor numbers over the cooler months. A rewards program will be introduced for those people who register their pets, including discount vouchers for many businesses in Ipswich, including discount movie tickets. An extra lane will be installed at the Riverview Recycling and Refuse Centre to cope with busy periods and reduce waiting times for residents. Over 140,000 residents a year visit the facililty. Popular programs to continue include: Seniors Program, FREE Graffitti removal kits, Movies in the Park, Christmas lights, Immunisation clinics, Enviroplan Photography Competition and Citizenship Ceremonies. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the budget

was about turning vision into reality while reducing debt and at the same time making sure all areas were treated fairly. “For the past 11 years we have brought down budgets which strived to improve efficiencies and customer service while keeping rate rises low. “Key priorities included the accelerated redevelopment of Ipswich City Square shopping centre. The city is also in its strongest position financially for many years.” The much-needed Norman Street Bridge, which will give Ipswich a second link over the Bremer River, remains a pipe dream reliant on Federal or State money to complete. Only 3% of taxes come from council, with 81% of money coming from the Federal Government and the remaining 16% from the State Government. With the Norman Street Bridge currently expected to cost around $200 million to build, it is out of the question for the Council to fund it alonr, as it would take over half the entire budget. “Governments need to stop worrying about the next election and spending money on infrastructure where it is needed,” Mayor Pisasale said. “Ipswich is growing at twice the rate of the State (3.1% vs 1.8%). “Communication with residents is critical and we want to hear from you, not only with issues, but with ideas that will help improve our city.”

BUDGET 2015-2016 WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU Increase of 76 cents a week in rates ($39.52) a year 10% increase early discount payment from $120 to $132 Pensioners continue to receive $245 a year in remissions $1.1 million to be spent in every division

Your teeth need to last a ... A piece of history rediscovered Residents in Barellan Point probably were never aware that their suburb was the location of a RAAF “Forks” A-7 Emergency Landing Ground during World War II, local historians have had a win with the location officially recognised at a ceremony in the peaceful leafy suburb recently, where a memorial cairn was unveiled. Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey unveiled the memorial to recognise the historical significance of the location, and as honorary Air Commodore of 23 Squadron and patron of 23 Squadron Association, who better to do the unveiling. The project was initiated by local historian Ken Grubb and researched by Retired Warrant Officer George Hatchman who were both aware that the area had been used in World War Two by aircraft. At that point in history, RAAF Base Amberley operated the emergency landing strip at an elevated area in Barellan Point, and was used by 23 Squadron as a satellite training airfield. It was just over 1km long, 61 metres wide and stretched from what is now Fifth Avenue to Dampier Street. At the end of the war, the airstrip was disbanded and returned to farmland, part of which belonged to the Morrow family, who have a connection with the city through Councillor Heather Morrow. Historian George Hatchmann said that there were records kept of the strip’s use, and some photos do exist of the kind of aircraft used at the time.

Amberley had a main runway and cross runway during World War 2 and needed an emergency landing field for a northern departure. There were also similar landing strips in Goolman, Willowbank, Rosewood and Goodna. “Coincidently, a 23 Squadron RAAF Moth Minor A21-7 operated from this airstrip which is also the same aircraft type as the first plane to operate at RAAF Amberley 75 years ago” Mr Hatchman said. “We really needed to seize the time to research this air trip as recent history has to be recorded, or it is lost to the next generation and each generation after that.” 23 Squadron , formerly known as the City of Brisbane Squadron, initially formed in Victoria in 1937 and relocated to Amberley during WW2. “I did 50 years in the Air Force and have seen the base at Amberley grow from its WW2 heritage to the current modern airbase,” Mr Hatchman said, “and this has stimulated my interest along with seeing aircraft like the Canberra Bombers, F-111’s and Super Hornets come and go on base. In my role as a unit historian in the ADF I’ve had access to many archives which has allowed my insight in the base history and its parallel growth with the City of Ipswich. “One of the things about Ipswich is our connection to RAAF Base Amberley. I’ve made my views very clear,” said Mayor Pisasale at the event. “We are there to support them through good times and bad. Today is another good example that when we see things that need to be done we will do them for the Defence Force, because their stories are so important to this city and it makes us who we are.” The memorial can be viewed on the corner of Junction Road and Fifth Avenue, Barellan Point.

Rapid Heat keeps you safe Whether you’re a home owner or running a commercial catering business, it’s important that your gas appliances should be serviced at a minimum of every two years or even more in high demand situations. Gas appliances operate for many hours over each year. This means appliance parts and operating conditions can deteriorate quite quickly causing issues even though they appear to be working fine. For example, how can you see if the equipment is operating at the specified gas pressure? If over time the gas pressure becomes too low or is too high due to wear and tear or a partially blocked component, it will not convert the gas into heat completely and efficiently. Either way you’ll be saving a whole lot of money on your gas bill if they are operating at the specified pressures. Another potential safety risk comes from breathing Carbon Monoxide which as we’ve seen in the news lately, can be fatal. Produced by abnormal appliance operation, this invisible, odourless and toxic gas can be present without you realising. You, your family or your staff should know what the health symptoms are for Carbon Monoxide poisoning for early detection and prevention before it becomes too late. So if it’s been a while since you’ve had your appliance checked, we encourage you to book a service today. Call Adrian at Rapid Heat today on 0423979541 or 3282 8025 or visit us at Facebook.com/Rapidheat

MYTOP5 Favourite Winter Dishes We love food here in the Ipswich Life offices *burp*...Who doesn’t? This season on Masterchef we’ve seen the judges faces light up when they see a good old fashioned home cooked style meal, so we thought we’d give Gary Mehigan a call and ask him what his favourite ‘Top 5 Foods To Eat In Winter’ were. Just reading this list is guaranteed to make your mouth water. Talk about YUM!

1 Curry with Rice and Naan Bread

Chicken curry is a favourite of mine. On a cold night you can’t beat a good curry with tons of rice and a tasty naan bread on the side. Easily my No.1 choice. You simply can’t beat that with some naan bread.

2 Roast Chicken

That’s a dish for all seasons, in winter you can have it with roasted vegetables, and tons of garlic. Then in summer its great with a big salad. You can’t beat a good roast chicken, no matter how good a cook you are.

3 Braised Beef Short Ribs

They are a big favourite of mine, long and slow. Lots of onions, tons of red wine...just fantastic.

4 Soup

I think soup went out of fashion for a while, but I love those big, one pot chunky soups with lots of ingredients, especially those ‘Scotch Broth’ types of soups. I love making a soup then wolfing it down with fresh crusty bread and butter.

5 Self Saucing Chocolate Pudding

Its sounds really boring as a chef, but I can knock one of these up really quickly, and you need the ‘trifecta’ with it on top: ice cream, cream and custard. That’s heaven in a bowl right there. Give me that as a dessert any day of the week! Send us YOUR Top 5 and win a double movie pass if we print it. Email your details and your Top 5 to darren@strikepublications.com.au

325m Water Slide coming to Ipswich The City Slider, the giant 325 metre long waterslide currently touring Australia, is set to transform Griffith Road in Ipswich on Saturday 31 October. The slide will begin outside of the PCYC and continue down the hill with Griffith Road closed between Chermside Road and Milford Street. The City Slider is 6 metres wide with two lanes and a layer of 35mm foam underneath for a soft landing. Although the slide is the main attraction, The City Slider is a carnival day for all to enjoy, even boasting a free mini-slide for the little ones (under 110cm tall). Ipswich PCYC will also take part in activities on the day which include food stalls, music, the skate ramp and water fights. “Everyone loves a water slide! They are synonymous with warm days outside in Australia. We can’t wait to get to Ipswich for a great family day out,” says Stuart Harris, co-founder of The City Slider. “A portion of the ticket sales go to CanTeen, the charity that helps kids with cancer, and on average we give them about $5000 per event. It travels around the country and we’ve done seven so far, but this summer we are planning twenty five events, including for the first time Ipswich on October 31. “It will go to Townsville, Cairns, Rockhampton and then South East Queensland. The goal this year is to raise over $130,000 for CanTeen. “There is a cap on the number of tickets, 600 per session, but this is for a good reason. It sounds like a lot, but when you’ve got people lining up, and walking back to the top which is a 325 metre walk, it moves along very nicely over the space of each 90 minute session,” Stuart said. “Yes, it’s a physical event, but its very safe. Everyone goes down on inflatable tubes so that everyone moves at the same pace. It’s a bit

of a science we’ve found, as it has evolved over time, and Griffiths Street is a really good site for this event, and this thing sells out everywhere we go. On the day we’ll also have spectators and a free toddlers play area. When we went on sale in Wollongong, it sold out in 24 hours, so we expect Ipswich to do very well too. People go ballistic, especially teenagers, they go mad for it. “Also, our final session – which runs from 7pm to 8:30pm – is under lights, so don’t forget your disco speedos and sequined togs,“ says Harris. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said Ipswich City Council was looking forward to welcoming this family friendly, alcohol-free street party to Ipswich. “It’s activities like this which give our community its heart and soul,” Cr Pisasale said. “We are sure residents will be lining up to be part of the fun.” Ipswich City Council Community and Customer Service Committee Chairperson Councillor Bruce Casos said it was great to see new attractions “sliding” into town…(pardon the pun). “Council has a deliberate strategy of encouraging new visitors to our city to enjoy all forms of recreation and this provides us with the perfect excuse to once again say come to Ipswich,” Cr Casos said. “This event has been travelling around Australia and looks like a lot of fun from the promotional video online.” For more information and for the latest news and updates go on Facebook and search for ‘The City Slider’. TALKING WINE

WITH TIM AT THE PRINCE ALFRED HOTEL

PISTOL PACKIN’ MOMMA Nose Cone Art was a popular art form in the 1930’s and 1940’s particularly as featured on the Liberator Planes. One of the main themes of Nose Cone Art was beautiful women as they were a reminder for the pilots missing their wives and girlfriends back home. Keith Johnston was a pilot in the Second World War and is the father of one of the founders of the Wallace Lane Wine Co and Liberator Wines. Liberator Wines restores the art of Pistol Packin’ Momma to share the joy she brought. Pistol Packin’ Momma Red is a blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot grapes. The reason this blend works so well is that the two varieties compliment each other allowing a fuller flavoured wine with an all round mouth feel. This approachable, fullflavoured wine derives from fruit sourced from various dry and irrigated vineyards around Orange in New South Wales. This wine has a tightly woven, complex and elegant nose with prominent notes of red berries, and blackcurrant intertwined with subtle hints of cinnamon and vanilla. The soft and velvety merlot combined with the more powerful cabernet sauvignon grapes

produces a luscious red wine. The palate arrives savoury, yet fruit filled, with succulent and luscious blackcurrant and red berry and bright acidity. It builds with wonderful stony, but sinewy, fine tannins and finishes with intriguing earth notes of native dried twigs. Pistol Packin’ Momma Red is the perfect accompaniment to the two newest additions to the Char’d Steakhouse menu — Beef Brisket slow cooked with red wine, mushrooms and thyme and our Slow Roasted Lamb Shoulder infused with rosemary and garlic — both which are available right now. Cheers! Tim

Events at Ipswich Art Gallery The Ipswich Art Gallery is going from strength to strength over the next twelve months with a compelling and innovative program of exhibitions, workshops and services to meet the needs of the community. Arts, Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale said the Ipswich Art Gallery’s patronage was growing every year thanks to a strong program of major exhibitions and education programs. “We’re continuing an upward trend in the 2015-16 financial year with an ambitious year of art events, exhibitions and educational programs. “Our school holiday children’s exhibitions are attracting thousands of visitors and not just from Ipswich, but the greater south east region,” Cr Pisasale said. “Following last year’s success the Australian Robowars Nationals (pictured right) will return to the Gallery in October for an exciting two days of robot battles.

“Local Now in September will feature some of our best emerging artists from Ipswich and give the community an insight into contemporary art practice in their own backyard. “These exhibitions are on top of an average of three art education programs a week throughout the academic calendar for approximately 7,500 students from 60-80 local schools.”

Defence

Back to the Future for tactical airlift at Amberley Australia’s newest military aircraft, the C-27J ‘Spartan’, will bring tactical airlift ‘back to the future’ at RAAF Base Amberley, when No 35 Squadron relocates to Queensland from early 2016. The C-27J replaces the DHC-4 Caribou tactical airlifter, which operated with 38 Squadron at Amberley through the 1990s before being retired in 2009, then stationed at RAAF Base Townsville. Having a tactical airlift capability in southeast Queensland has been a long time coming, with contenders to replace the Caribou first sought more than 30 years ago. However, in 2016 ten of the C-27s will finally share tarmac space with C-17A Globemasters and KC-30A air refuellers, creating a substantial presence of airlift capability on the air base.

The first production C-27J, A34-001, was delivered mid-June to RAAF Base Richmond where the squadron will be reformed in preparation for the relocation to Amberley. A second C-27J, A34-002, is expected to be delivered to Richmond in August. Defence regards Amberley as the best operating base option for the C-27. Last year, when Amberley was announced as the operating base, the director of the C-27J Transition team, Group Captain Steve Young said, “In light of contemporary circumstances, including Army’s Plan BEERSHEBA, Amberley is the most flexible and efficient basing option to support the full range of C-27J customers. “Having the main operating base at Amberley will also improve responsiveness for major deployments through co-location with the C-17 capability.” A34-001 entered Alenia Aermacchi’s Turin assembly line late-2012 and first flew on December 18 2013. The ‘Green’ aircraft was extensively modified by L-3 in Waco, Texas in March 2014, which included fitment of ballistic protection matting, EW/self-protection systems, and communications suite. Training for RAAF Crews commenced last December. The C-27Js are being acquired as battlefield airlifters, a specialised role missing from the

Australian Defence Force since the retirement of the Caribou fleet, although KA 350 King Air aircraft were operated from RAAF Base Townsville in the air mobility role. In its tactical airlift role, the C-27J has the capacity to carry a significant load and still access small, soft, narrow runways that are either too short for the C-130J Hercules or landing fields that are unable to sustain repeated use by larger aircraft. The C-27J is also more survivable in its battlefield airlift role, with electronic and ballistic self-protection matting, plus the aerodynamic handling performance to operate more tactically in and out of airfields where there may be ground threat. Its missile warning systems, electronic self protection, secure communications and battlefield armour provides protection from threats ranging from small arms to highly lethal man portable air defence systems (MANPADS). The flexibility of the C-27J allows it to undertake a wide range of missions, from delivering ammunition to front line troops to undertaking aero medical evacuation of casualties, which augments the capabilities of the C-130J and C-17A fleets. A battlefield airlifter needs to be able to operate in a high threat environment.

Initial Operational Capability (IOC) for the C-27J is expected in late 2016. Above: A No 35 Squadron C-27J Spartan flies at low level shortly after departing RAAF Base Townsville. Below left: Flight Lieutenant Nicholas Nutt, Captain of the first RAAF C-27J Spartan, shows his partner Tracey his new office. KC-30A fleet to become seven aircraft The growing list of aircraft types being brought into RAAF service that need, or will need, air-to-air refuelling has prompted the Australian Government to buy two additional KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport aircraft to join the five stationed at 33 Squadron at RAAF Base Amberley. Under the $408 million deal with Airbus Defence and Space, two previously-owned Qantas A330-200 airliners will be converted for military use by Airbus Defence and Space in Spain. The RAAF decided to use these particular aircraft as they are close to the same basic specification as the KC-30As already in service. Normal practice would be to take delivery of two ‘green’ aircraft off the production line, then extensively modify the production aircraft for 16 Ipswich Life

military use. Using these existing aircraft cuts out the production line timeframe, allowing the modifications to proceed much earlier, allowing delivery to Amberley in 2018. The KC-30A is capable of refuelling F/A18A/B Hornets, F/A-18F Super Hornets, E-7A Wedgetail, C-17A Globemasters and other KC-30A aircraft. In the future it will refuel EA-18G Growler, P-8A Poseidon and the F-35A (Joint Strike Fighter) providing a force-multiplier so aircraft can remain on station longer, extending their range and persistence. The KC-30A continues to play an important role in the Middle East region as part of Operation OKRA, refuelling both a growing number of Australian and Coalition fighter aircraft.

New Squadron at RAAF Amberley A new Air Force squadron came into being recently at an Inauguration Parade at RAAF Base Amberley. Number 65 Squadron, part of Combat Support Group (CSG), was established to combine Airfield Engineering and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) to provide a centralised airbase recovery capability. The parade Reviewing Officer, Air Commodore Scott Winchester, Commander Combat Support Group, said the formation of the new squadron was a significant milestone in Combat Support Group’s transformation to deliver focussed combat support at fixed airbases and expeditionary locations, whether in Australia or overseas. “The numbering of the Airbase Recovery Squadron as 65 Squadron appropriately links the histories of Air Force’s Engineering and EOD capabilities, while recognising the current contribution both workforces make to airbase recovery”, Air Commodore Winchester said. The ‘6’ in 65 Squadron refers to 6 Bomb Disposal Squad, the last of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal squads formed in World War 2. Similarly, the ‘5’ is in reference to No 5 Airfield Construction Squadron which had an impressive history from WW2 to 1974, when it was disbanded.

The Commanding Officer of 65 Squadron, Wing Commander Justin Cockroft said. “We are seeing significant eagerness and pioneering spirit from the incoming workforce to prove the mission of the new SQN. At the same time I am receiving quality input and support to assist us in our endeavours from all quarters of Air Force as well as from the other services. “As we develop the air base recovery capability we will continue to provide current AFENG and EOD services that, in one form or another, these elements have been providing Air Force since WWII. I’m extremely proud to be given the privilege to lead the women and men of 65SQN to realise the next evolution of air base support.” In recent history these two capabilities have been held within unrelated units. The Force Protection Review recommended that they be combined within a single Air Base Recovery Squardron due to the unique capability that these trades provide to the establishment of expeditionary air fields and air bases. The Air Force’s newest squadron will be headquartered at RAAF Base Amberley with elements located at RAAF Townsville, RAAF Richmond, and Orchard Hills near Sydney.

Defence soon to get new Steyr rifles The Australian Defence Forces should begin taking delivery in 2016 of about 30,000 new EF88 Austeyr 5.56 mm rifles acquired under an $100 million contract to be signed later this month. This was confirmed to IHS Jane’s by a Department of Defence spokesman last week. Under the contract, to be signed with Thales Australia, first deliveries would take place in 2016, although some EF88s from low-rate initial production approved by the government in September 2014 had already been received for derisking activities. The balance of the approved expenditure would be applied to the acquisition of a broad range of targeting and surveillance ancillaries for the EF88. The F90 assault rifle, is an evolution of the F88 assault rifle, adopted by Australian and New Zealand armed forces during late 1980s. The EF88 is said to be much more reliable and comfortable than original F88. It is also noticeably lighter: standard F90 with 50 cm / 20” barrel is about 0.5 kg / 1.1 lbs lighter than standard F88 rifle; with new 40mm underbarrel grenade launcher installed, resulting weapon is more than 1.6 kg / 3.5 lbs lighter than F88 rifle equipped with M203PI grenade launcher. Landmark reforms to ADF Super Legislation has been introduced into Parliament to establish a new military superannuation scheme for Defence Force personnel along with legislation to enable ADF members to work part time. Assistant Minister for Defence, Stuart Robert, said the new scheme, to be known as ADF Super, will for the first time allow ADF members to join the superannuation fund of their choice , or they can choose a default military superannuation fund. “ADF Super fixes one of the longest running grievances of the veteran and exService community, namely the lack of flexibility and portability of a member’s superannuation benefit,” Minister Robert said. In recognition of the unique nature of military service ADF Super members will receive an employer contribution rate of 16.4 per cent, regardless of the superannuation fund they choose, which is higher than the 15.4 per cent announced last year. The rate is higher than that offered to Australian Public Servants (15.4 per cent) and significantly higher than the 9.5 per cent available to the majority of Australians through the Superannuation Guarantee. ADF Super will apply to ADF members who join on and after 1 July 2016. Members of the current Military Superannuation and Benefits Scheme may choose to move to the new scheme or remain in the current scheme – they will not be compelled to move to ADF Super. The MSBS will be closed to new entrants from 1 July 2016. Due to the unique nature of military service it is often difficult for ADF members to obtain death and invalidity cover at a reasonable cost. “To ensure ADF members continue to receive full death and invalidity cover the Government is also establishing ADF Cover, which will provide death and invalidity cover consistent with that provided to members of the current MSBS,” the Minister said. “Accompanying the introduction of ADF Super and ADF Cover is legislation that will provide for significantly more flexible service for permanent ADF members. ADF members will, for the first time, be able to seek part-time work arrangements, subject to Defence’s capability requirements.” 18 Ipswich Life

MONEY MATTERS BY MARK BOURIS Pension Changes It’s official. Times are changing. Once upon a time you could have expected to work into your mid 60s and then retire to live on a government pension. This was the expectation of my parent’s generation. Those days are gone. For the rest of us, let’s be honest: we’ve been hearing for 30 years that the tax base can not support a universal age pension forever, especially as our life expectancies rise. Back in the early 1990s the government made a switch from defined benefit retirement schemes, to the accumulation scheme we have today: superannuation. Accumulation schemes put the onus on the individual. The current changes, announced this month to the pension will likely mean everyone will not receive the pension, just those who need it most. So what does this change mean for you? Firstly, you need to change your mindset: this is your money, it’s your future and it’s your retirement. Own it – take control. Start with understanding how much you must accumulate to support you (and your partner) in retirement. Another way to understand what you need is to use the ‘income replacement’ formula. This calculates the money you need in retirement as a percentage of your salary. This is an average for people who share your age, income and marital status. For a single person it’s typically around 75 per cent of your total salary; for a couple, it’s around 55 per cent. Now learn what the superannuation funds offer, and how they differ. Establish how much fund managers charge to invest your money – a difference of even 1 per cent is significant over 20 or 30 years. Super funds have different life insurance offers and some

have ‘advice’ built into their fees. Also, learn the difference between investment options in your fund and which ones you should be in. They are usually cash, fixed interest, conservative, balanced and growth funds. This will cover a range of options from the low-returns and low risk through to funds that predominantly produce high returns but are higher risk. Getting started early is the key to successfully securing a comfortable future for yourself. Einstein is often quoted as saying the greatest invention of mankind was compound interest – and he’s right that it can make a big difference in what you save. I advocate that people use an adviser and that they develop that relationship as early as possible. Advisers can help you make your assets as tax efficient as possible and assist with the more complex calculations. For instance, whether you own your home, have non-super investments, are likely to have health issues, have dependents or carry debt in retirement – they all change the plan slightly. Whatever your goals, you’ll need a plan to make it a reality. As boring as it sounds, small regular contributions to your plan are more effective than occasional lump sums. Finally, remember many people will now live 20 years past retirement. Just as important as saving while you work is how that money is actually invested– how much is defensive, how much produces growth?

The original FIAT 500 was introduced back in 1957. Exactly fifty years later, on July 4 2007, FIAT chose to celebrate that heritage by introducing the new FIAT 500, a car which embodied the same spirit and personality as the original and which has also enjoyed phenomenal success all over the world. Eight years on, with over 1.5 million vehicles produced, the torch is now being passed to the new FIAT 500 with which FIAT is preparing to take on new market challenges without forgetting its illustrious roots. Available in two body styles (hatchback and convertible), the new FIAT 500 is a cut-above in terms of standard features. All models have LED daytime running lights, seven airbags and an Uconnect infotainment system with six speakers, AUX-IN/USB ports and steering wheel remote controls as standard equipment. The FIAT 500 is a global best-seller with an Italian heart. Lingotto in Turin was chosen for the world première of the new FIAT 500. Opened in 1923, the FIAT factory was famed for unusual production process, which worked its way upwards through the building floors with completed vehicles emerging onto its functional test track on the roof. Designed by architect Le Corbusier, Lingotto became a symbol of burgeoning Italian industrialisation even before it was completed. The exterior style of the New FIAT 500 expresses all the distinctive elements which characterised the 1957 original, but now reasserts this appeal with more a contemporary look and additional technical content. The most obvious reference to the past can be found at the front end: The new FIAT 500 retains the “face” of its predecessors with headlights which are still circular in shape, but have a more dynamic slant to convey a bolder and more confident gaze. The rear of new FIAT 500 is transformed by the addition of exclusive new ‘empty’ light clusters comprised of an innovative ring-shaped structure with bodycoloured centres. The entertainment system includes; FM/AM radio; remote controls on the steering wheel; AUX-IN and USB ports and six speakers as standard. The new steering wheel features new remote control buttons which are easier to operate and, thanks to their chrome-plated edging and high-quality materials, more pleasant to touch and to behold. Further enhancements include a new lidded glove box on the passenger’s side and a revised centre console with new cup holders and a relocated 12V power socket. New electric window switches, which adopt a push-down-pull-up operation, complete the visible interior revisions, while additional soundproofing panels in the wheelhouse and firewall making the passenger compartment even more comfortable and refined.

New Available in September, the new Jaguar XE redefines the concept of the sports saloon and will be the driver’s car in its class. Its lightweight construction, streamlined styling, luxurious interior and outstanding ride and handling are testament to company founder Sir William Lyons’ vision: ‘The car is the closest thing we will ever create to something that is alive’. The rear-drive XE is the only vehicle in its class to use an aluminium-intensive monocoque. This extremely robust yet light structure, together with double wishbone front suspension and an Integral Link rear axle, is fundamental to deliver the development target of the driver’s car in the segment. The aluminium-intensive Jaguar XE is the first model developed from Jaguar Land Rover’s new modular vehicle

Subaru Announces Levorg Subaru’s new Levorg sports tourer has been confirmed for Australia with deliveries expected mid-2016. The Levorg has been a massive success in the Japanese domestic market and it is seen as the spiritual successor to the much-loved fourth generation Liberty GT wagon which was a worldwide sales success. It has similar exterior dimensions to that car but because of its smart packaging it will have much more interior space. Subaru Australia Managing Director, Nick Senior, said: “The factory has been extremely supportive in helping us to secure the Levorg for the Australian market. “It will appeal to those fourth generation Liberty GT buyers who have been starved of a logical successor but we believe it will also attract a much wider audience because of its performance, its versatility, its refinement and its high level of standard equipment. “It will join one of the strongest sporting lineups in the industry - BRZ, WRX, WRX STI and XT - vehicles that last month accounted for nearly 500 sales. “And we have more excitement later this year with three very special limited editions arriving and another in first half of 2016 that will be the ideal complement to Levorg.” Further details on Levorg will be announced closer to the launch date.

architecture. The XE is the stiffest, most aerodynamic Jaguar saloon car ever built. It is also the first Jaguar saloon to be equipped with electric power steering, tuned to provide exceptional responsiveness and feel but with lower energy consumption than hydraulic systems. The XE also boasts the lowest cost of ownership and most environmentally sustainable credentials of all Jaguar models. The XE will offer a choice of four advanced engines, from the all-new highly efficient Ingenium diesel engine, to the F-TYPE derived 3.0-litre V6 supercharged petrol engine when it goes on sale in September.

’ SUV categories that the CX-3 and CX-5, respectively, came out as the best vehicles to own and operate,” said Steve Spalding, RACQ’s executive manager Technical & Safety Policy. “The combination of good pricing, lower servicing costs and in the longer term, lower depreciation costs, contributed to this result.” Mazda was thrilled to see two of its most popular models receiving this recognition. “Mazda’s latest generation SKYACTIV Technology is designed to deliver an optimal balance of performance and fuel economy for our owners,” said Mazda Australia managing director Martin Benders All-New Mazda2 was also noted by RACQ as one of the best-value options in the light car class.

In its biggest-ever result, i30 claimed 5521 sales. It’s the first time since 1998 that a Hyundai has topped the Australian monthly sales chart. In calendar year-to-date terms, at 15,801 sales, the i30 hatch maintains its podium position behind Toyota Corolla (21,750) and Mazda3 (20,427) hatches and sedans. Hyundai also broke its all-time monthly record with 11,007 sales, nearly a thousand more than the same month last year. “We are very proud of our all-time record,” said Hyundai Motor Company Australia Chief Executive Officer, Mr Charlie Kim. “It is an example of fantastic team work between committed and talented Hyundai dealers and all the staff working for Hyundai in Australia. It is a pleasure to think of all the new customers who will now be enjoying the benefits of joining the Hyundai family.” The i30’s phenomenal sales month wasn’t Hyundai’s only major success story for June.
